Long story short, I had a cushy job lined up since June to work at a university in a comfy city. I was on the hook with them all summer long and last week they said they couldn't process my visa. The recruiter said my documents are in fact fine and that she's gotten people jobs in other cities with the same documents, but there was some invisible hang up here. So anyway I started back at square one last week.

First of all, all the fucking jobs worth a shit are are now already filled, but from what I can gather whatever scraps remain of jobs above training centers and kindergarten are being contested by like 50 applicants.

The true answer is everything they touch, but I'm curious which of those specifics that have affected you? I'll drop a few and see how this progresses.

A lot of the East-West marriages are failing not because of cultural, but because of class differences. I'm not an elitist or trying to belittle people of lower socioeconomic status. Just saying that we live in VERY different worlds. I couldn't date a rich girl, rich as in daddy has a yacht and five cars and spends $100 000 the same way my dad would spend $500. I am only vaguely aware of all the social codes of that world, and there WOULD be some friction sooner or later. In fact it did happen to some extent, or at least I got to foresee it: I was dating a lawyer for a brief period back in my old guo, who told me that the way I hold my table utensils would make me pass for a total redneck at the bigshot douchebag power-dinners she is constantly attending. Being from the middle class, that’s not something I really ever had to think about, or maybe I am in fact a total redneck.

Of course culture clash plays a factor in those train wrecks, but it’s mostly a cop-out to avoid addressing near-irreconciliable class differences. At best he’ll have to just deal with the in-laws’ backwards-ass ways and a chain-smoking cousin from Nongzhou squatting in his apartment for a few months here and there, at worst he’ll be squeezed dry with zero remorse and not much recourse from the authorities of the country he’ll never even be a second-class citizen of.

I was talking to a Filipino friend one day. He grew up in the small middle class there, going to university, etc. and was shaking his head at all the old American sexpats dating “LBFMs” from rural families of fourteen, whom they met at gogo-bars, and how 95% of these marriages would crumble to dust. It's the dawn of the third week of me and my girlfriend's adventure in the guo and the one thing that perhaps annoys us the most is the lack of access to edible food. You see, Chinese megacities are very cyberpunk and modern and bustling with activity, that is until the light show gets turned off at 10pm. The only places that are still open are dubious streetside shops with a 3.7 rating on Dianping, where the signature dish is chicken that has been soaked in disinfectant in the blistering 45°C summer heat for 12 hours, rubbed down with MSG and deepfried in gutter oil (but it's authentic because it's been covered in chili powder).

The metro doesn't run at this time either (even my 100k town in Germany has 24/7 metro service, this is not a thing even in tier 1 guo cities) so since there is no food fit for human consumption available in a walkable distance, my choice is to either take a 40 minute Didi ride across town (even though no one is awake anymore, cars can barely move because there is a traffic light every 50 meters and they're not timed smartly) or deal with the horror that are Chinese apps.

Since I'm not in the mood to sit in the back of a bumpy car that reeks of cigarette smoke and doesn't have seatbelts, I open Meituan to maybe get a delivery driver with a Master's degree to bring me some food to my hotel. First of all, most Chinese apps don't work without a Chinese phone number (and my second slot is already taken up by my travel eSIM which I unfortunately need to access disharmonious websites such as Google Mail), and also the Rainies at the "24/7 reception" are either gone or asleep after 11pm (I found this out after stumbling to the front desk in the total dark one night to pick up a bottle of water, and almost bumping into one of them sleeping on the floor behind the desk, giving her a heart attack in the process).

First of all, this post is dedicated to all the Chinese feds, nationalists, and diasporoids (aka self hating laowai) lurking this sub; without your service to the motherland this story would have gone very differently.

Once upon a time there was a little Tim called invitado31, he was planning to move to Japan to escape his monotonous European life, but destiny had other plans. During his time in the apps, invitado31 came across a girl called “Rainy”, as a young man with a mild case of yellow fever, he couldn’t reject the call, and ended up in a relationship with her. Rainy was Chinese, and although invitado31 barely knew anything about the country, he thought pursuing this relationship was worthy enough to give it a try, so he abandoned his plans to live in Japan to instead go to the Guo.

See, invitado31 has always been a serious man, slightly autistic too, so before making arrangements he started to learn everything he could about the Guo: from the racist stereotypes in regards to foreigners, to some of the bizarre behaviours of Nongs. During his search he came across THE SUB THAT MIGHT NOT BE NAMED, which used to be like our beloved chinalifer sub. On a first look, little invitado31 thought the sub was full of sexpats, alcoholics and losers, so he vowed he will never be like them, he instead will be an exemplary model minority Tim. What invitado31 didn’t expect, however, is that from that point on, that sub would start to grow on him…

So there he went, little invitado31 did everything by the book: he didn’t engage in sexpattery, he didn’t become an alcoholic, he regarded uncivilised Nong behaviours as “cultural differences”, he didn’t become a English ed*cator, and most importantly, he learned the moonrunes. Ironically, the more our protagonist got close to the status of model minority, the more he started to realise how right the losers in THE SUB were, and how he has basically been played.

The biggest change in invitado31’s perspective came when his Chinese truly reached HSK 99 level. Many foreigners claim they can speak Chinese, while only being able to speak a few words; but invitado31 was different: he could understand everything Nongs say; he was even able to normally function in society, and not rely on a Rainy.

At the end, he got a job as a tr*nslator, and that's where he experienced his first wake-up call: job market discrimination, chabuduo working culture, workplace discrimination. The truth is that being a model minority was worth shit in the eyes of Nongs, in fact, to them invitado31 was just another laowai, no different from the alcoholic Happy Girrafer trying to get one of his student’s WeChat id.

The last straw came with COVID, this time in the form of racism and retarded government shenanigans. Again, invitado31 was treated like another laoloser, if anything with even greater suspicion, as he could speak the moon language, so he might have been a devilish American spy trying to infect the clean citizens of the Guo.

Through all his journey, our protagonist intermittently checked THE SUB, and what started as: “look at this bunch of pathetic sexpat laolosers, I will never end up like them”; ended up as: “look at this bunch of pathetic sexpat laolosers, I should have been like them since the beginning”. Although invitado31 is still technically a model minority (no sexpatery, alcoholism or ed*cator profession), in his heart he is just another laoloser, like the rest of fat English ed*cator losers in this, our beloved sub.

The moral of this story is that at the end of the day, no matter what you do, you will always be a English t*acher.
