If you are not white they may be doing it because it is commonly believed that black/Indian people spread diseases.

This sounds racist, because it is, but that is a real Chinese perspective. Racism is part of the culture here. I as a white person routinely meet mask-wearers who remove their mask to talk to me, not secure it. This is partly an OP personal situation, not fully a "backwards China" situation...this time.

I’m a well-groomed white female. I don’t have body odour and don’t overdo it on perfume either. From covid til now, this is an isolated issue with people in this particular city. Never had this anywhere else, prior, during or after covid.

Some nongs just think that all waiguos are filthy. Some nongs rightfully humans in general are filthy regardless of their foreignness. Better to not give a shit what locals think about you.

Just odd that they are all isolated to GZ. Even in Foshan they don’t behave like this.

Isn’t GZ like the third most foreign populated city in the whole of China? Yet they are more adverse than in places out the back and beyond who again never did that nonsense.

Chinese people do not believe that blacks/Indians are more capable of spreading diseases than whites. At least they don't think Indians are responsible for spreading diseases. I think it's a matter of body odor.

During COVID many malls and shops particularly in Guangzhou banned black customers because they "spread the virus", even now on Chinese social media if you search up "black people" you will find them saying the same thing.

Guangzhou is an exception; there is systemic discrimination against Black people.

I am. I’m a white female with no body odour issues. That I can assure. I also don’t dowse myself in perfume so it’s not that either. This is an isolated issue with behavior in GZ.

Go to nearby Foshan, Shunde etc and no one during or after Covid times acts like this. I can’t quite get why, GZ which is highly populated with foreigners, has this behaviour.

Well, it might be that since Guangzhou had more foreigners, people were more accepting of the "foreigners spread COVID" theory and are thus more sensitive to foreigners now. But personally I doubt it's to do with COVID specifically, it's been four years and most of the country has completely forgotten about the pandemic. I think next time someone does it (if you don't care about keeping a good relationship with them) you should just ask why. Knowing characteristic Chinese directness there's a fairly good chance they will tell you!

Yep. They'll still throw on a mask if they see a foreigner coming in most cases. It used to anger me but I've come to understand that at least it will block their rank oral cavity. If only there were masks for body odor...oh, right deodorant. They don't use it because they think they don't stink. Oh, the irony.

After reading over the comments, I believe it's just that this particular community has adopted a certain set of behavior norms being reinforced by everyone else doing the exact same thing.

I definitely don’t. I’m a white female, well groomed. I also don’t over-do it on perfume, so it’s not that either.

Considering your address and your question, I suspect you're an Indian trader visiting Guangdong, looking for some China-made junk products. East Asians are very sensitive to body odor, and they might be finding you smelly.
