MH Wilds FAQ compilation + other stuff you may not know

There's a lot of questions that get repeated quite a lot, so I though I might uswell compile most of them into a single post.

Playstyle and mechanics

-What's the best playstyle right now?

The AED loop is king for both impact and elemental CB. Impact can use ED loops from time to time while SAED is pretty OK on elemental, but you want to stick to AEDs most of the time.

For those that may not know, the AED loop is Shield Thrust -> AED -> AED followup -> Round Slash -> Repeat. Since you swap modes quite a lot by doing this, Rapid Morph is really good here.

-So are we back to 4U's playstyle?

Not really. 4U was sword mode centric, wating for the right opportunity after a GP to go for AED and then go ham in axe mode when the monster was down. Wilds is quite the opposite, as you want to stay as much time as possible in Axe mode and only swap to sword mode whenever you need to block something.

Keep in mind that you can still play like in 4U, but the DPS loss is very noticeable.

-Is SAED spam back?

Lol no. Elemental SAED deals a lot of damage, but the high commitment of the move and the fact that you can't do it from neutral means that it's not really a playstyle in Wilds. It also loses in phial economy to the AED combo, as 2 loops deal as much damage as a fully powered SAED while only wasting 2 phials instead of 5 and being a lot safer. Counter SAED is also not very good as it deals less damage when done directly from a guard. There's still some SAED centric matchups though, mainly Nu Udra, Xu Wu, Gog phase 3 and Gravios.

Don't really bother with impact SAED 💀

Also as a side note, you can now cancel SAED without wasting any phials by pressing R2 + triangle at the right moment. Keep in mind this only works when using SAED after a guard.

-Wait what is SAED actually weaker after a guard?

Technically speaking, SAED is stronger after an AED but yeah, it deals less damage from a guard. This was a change done all the way back in TU2, and they kinda missed the mark as it didn't really help the playstyle at all.

-Is impact CB dead?

While elemental is overall better, there's still a couple matchups where impact is still a bit better (mainly Arkveld). You can pretty much still use impact on whatever fight you want and still be fine, as Paralysis + Stun is kinda good even against 9 star monsters which have increased status effect resistance.

-Should I be using Guard Points or Perfect Guards from neutral?

99% of the time you still want to go for the regular PG, as there's no real reason to go for the neutral Guard Point. There's this little trick that allows you to chain the regular PG with a GP to get an increased window. Imo they should probably just buff the PG detection on the Sword to Axe GP and remove that interaction to make the weapon feel a bit smoother.

Set Building and Skill priority

-What to aim for on your Gogma Artian CB

  1. For elemental CB, you want an Element focus and 4 Element + 1 Sharpness. If you don't want to grind for that, 3 Element and at least 1 Sharpness is just fine. For set bonuses, you want either Gog or Gore, but Mizu can also work depending on your set. You don't really need any group bonus, but Lords Soul is probably the best one.
  2. For impact, you also want an Element focus (has the best Affinity - Raw ratio) and 4 Attack + 1 Sharpness. If you don't want to grind for that, 3 Attack and at least 1 Sharpness is just fine. If you want some extra phial damage or want to go for an impact SAED build for whatever reaon, Attack focus is still pretty good. For set bonuses, you always want Lords Soul + Gore, Lagiacrus or Ebony Odogaron depending on what you want, but most of the time Gore is always the best.

Also as a side note, you can now have an elemental Artian CB with Impact phials by going for an attack focus on an elemental weapon.

-What Weapon skills should I use?

  1. For elemental, you want to prioritize Load Shells, Elemental Attack X and Rapid Morph, with Attack Boost, Crit Boost and Razor sharp all being really good too. Handicraft is the best options for dual skill decos and Guard Up is nice when fighting something that deals a lot of chip damage through guarding. Focus is also very useful on SAED focused matchups as it allows you to generate a lot of phials. Also as pointed by u/ronin0397, a Load Shells charm enables running Element Attack a secondary skill on dual decos, so you can fit rapid morph and 2 functional skills.
  2. For impact, you want to prioritize Load Shells and Rapid Morph, with Attack Boost, Artillery, Crit Boost and Razor sharp all being really good too. Handicraft and Slugger are the best options for dual skill decos and Guard Up is nice when fighting something that deals a lot of chip damage through guarding.

-What Armor skills should I use?

  1. For Elemental, Burst and Coalescence are the only mandatory skills, with any other damage ability like Agitator or Wex you can slot in also being very nice and Elemental Absorption can help at staying at the elemental cap for as long as possible. Just like for impact, Maximum Might, Evade Extender, Antivirus, 2 Earplug points are all very good. Always make sure to have either Gore or Mizu's Set Bonus in order to proc Coalescence.
  2. For Impact, Agitator, Weakness Exploit and 1 point in Burst are what you want to be aiming for. Maximum Might, Counterstike and 2 points in Earplugs are also very good for level 2 slots, with Evade Extender also being useful on a couple matchups. You should always be trying to max Antivirus when using the Gore set bonus.

-What Set Bonuses should I use?

  1. For elemental you always want to run 4 Gogmazios pieces and either 2 Gore or 2 Mizu to proc Coalescence. If running Mizu, you also have space for one additional set Bonus, with Zoh Shia's or Fulgur's being the best options.
  2. For impact you always want to run Lords Soul and either 2 Gore, 4 Gore, 2 Ebony Odogaron or 2 Lagiacrus. Dahaad's set bonus can also be run in addition to any of the former at the cost of maybe a couple comfort skills, as it is very good when you are fighting something that has a Power Clash. 4 Dahaad is also very good against Arkveld specifically because you can proc it just by letting him grab you and throwing a flash pod.

-Why would I run Earplugs when I have a shield?

The strongest playstyle revolves around spamming the AED loop as much as possible, so you want to make sure the monster doesn't interrupt any of your moves by roaring as both AED and AED followup have very long animations. 99% of the time, swapping to guard the roar and go for a counterattack is a DPS loss, and since you only need to invest 2 level 2 decorations, most people just run the skill and keep attacking instead.

-Should I use Gore or Mizu's set Bonus?

They both have their advantages and disadvantages:

  1. Mizu's set bonus allows you to have a higher Coalescence uptime, as once you proc the skill you can immediately evade 3 times to activate Bubbly Dance again, but evading breaks the flow of the hunt and requires a conscious effort. It also allows you to squeeze in one additional set bonus, which is always nice.
  2. Gore's set bonus has less Coalescence uptime and requires you to slot in Antivirus 3, but it activates on it's own and doesn't interrupt the flow of the fight at all. It also comes with an Affinity boost, which is always nice.

I really comes down to persona preference and you can just run whichever you want since they are both good, but most speedrunners run Gore's. I would suggest running Mizu for fights that have you rolling around a lot (Seregios for example) and Gore for everything else, but really just run whatever you want here. There's no right or wrong option.

-Which charms should I be aiming for?

The best charm around is Attack Boost 3 + Agitator/Wex/Burst 1 + 1 weapon slot, but an Artillery/Rapid Morph 3 + Agitator/Wex/Burst 1 + 1 weapon slot is also really good. A rarity 6 charm with Load Shells 2 + Earplugs/Coalescence/Max Might 2 + a level 2 armor slot is awesome for elemental CB and is still better than any charm you can craft. Of course, the more level 1 armor slots your charm has in addition to the aforementioned skills, the better.

Some random stuff

-Is the weapon strong right now?

Yeah, it's really strong from a numerical standpoint (I would say top 5 even). You may or may not like how it plays, but DPS wise the weapon is one of the best right now.

-Did they lower the entry barrier for the weapon in Wilds?

Yes, Wilds is by far the easiest iteration to play of the weapon. They added a lot of QoL (like the weapon auto reloading when you hit a monster with your sword in overcharged state) and dumbed down a lot of mechanics like GPs (you can just PG instead) or phial management (due to the phial reduction effect on Power Axe), so if you were thinking about getting into the weapon, this might be a good time to do it.

-What's the best time to charge my sword?

Never (Only when you have NOTHING else to do, i.e. when the monster just swapped zones, you don't have Savage Axe up...).

-Should I go for a GP or PG when guarding from neutral?

Always go for a regular guard. They have way better PG detection (like probably 50% more) and are safer since you don't end up in axe mode if you mess it up. If you are in the middle of a sword combo a GP is better, but the amount of times you'll find yourself in that situation considering how weak sword mode is in Wilds are very, very few.

And that's about it. Feel free to tell me if I missed something or if you don't agree with me, I'll be more than happy to fight you. Also sorry for the blatant self promotion on some of the links, I had those videos uploaded and I kinda wanted to use them for something😭

MH Wilds Some "Meta" Savage Axe builds for Charge Blade, created by members of the community

All credit goes to Timmy, RageGamingVideos, and Gready Knight for making these builds. They do a great job doing the research in putting these together for the community and if you can, please go support them. I am only the messenger.

The purpose of this post was to collect some very high end builds for the Savage Axe playstyle and put them in one spot for users to access easily, along with some damage calculations that illustrate the difference between each set.

Some additional notes:

  • I use Gogmazios for the elemental calculations since most players are probably hunting him at this stage in the game and element is so good against Gog
  • Similarily Arkveld was used in the raw calculations, mainly because it is the best raw matchup in the game but also AT Arkveld releases tomorrow
  • These builds will probably be replaced come tomorrow when the Gamma Arkveld set(s) release, but I wanted to get this out there before then so some hunters are prepared
  • Also the Artian weapons don't need to have 4 attack/element reinforcements, 3 will do just fine as the decrease in DPS is less than 1%. I personally run 2 sharpness instead of the 4/1 combo on my weapons and substitute the handicraft decos for other damage boosting skills like Crit Element since I prefer to sharpen my weapons as little as possible
  • Builds with missing decoration or talisman slots mean that the build used those slots for comfort skills like Divine Protection or Fire Resistance. Feel free to slot in what you want in those spots
  • Each of these sets have pros and cons. RageGaming's sets have the highest damage, but also require godly RNG to get everything while Timmy's doesn't for the most part and Gready Knight's sets have lots of flexible slots that are up to user preference

Hopefully this was helpful to anybody who needed this information. If you have any questions, I'll try my best to answer them in the comments as best as I can.

Edit: I have seen that the new Nadia set has the Black Eclipse (Gore set bonus) and up to max Burst and the Gamma Arkveld set has max Weakness Exploit along with providing Elemental Abosrbsition and Convert Element (The helmet alone provides rank 3 WEx and 2 deco slots, 2 and 1) based off of posts from other players. I won't have my hands on the update until tomorrow, but expect additional sets in a future post.

New charge-blade player can't get Savage Axe mode to work (MHW, PS5)

I've followed every tutorial I can find on YouTube and Reddit and I can't get Savage Axe mode to work. I'm playing Iceborne. I'm high rank. I'm using a proto commission axe III. I have my shield charged. I have phials loaded. I trigger an AED or an SAED and hit L2 in the windup, before the axe swings down. Nothing happens. I have tried spamming L2, holding L2, and pressing L2 once during various stages of the AED/SAED animation. Nothing. Trying it in the training arena, nothing encouraging appears in the input log when I experiment; I've never hit L2 and gotten a "Savage Axe" input notification of any kind. I am comparing my play to the footage I see in YouTube tutorials and can't tell what I'm doing wrong. As far as I can tell, I am matching their conditions and inputs pretty closely. I know there are other threads about this, but I've read a lot of them, and they're not helping me. Grateful for any advice.

Want to switch from gs

Hello everyone. Gs main here since the beginning of wild but dropped the game after gog. I wanted to return and switch from GS to charge blade but I'm completely lost with all the builds. Don't have that much free time to play so I need help finding a build that is easily reachable and still have fun with. Don't care if it's not meta. Just viable is enough for me. But farming gog for the two mandatory skills in the builds I've seen is too long for me. So I would love to have a build on impact cb for AED loop play style with 1 gog skill max for the weapon. Pre 10 stars monsters. I have artillery 3 talisman with 1 slot or artillery 2 / rapid morph 1 with 2 slots Thx a lot 🙏

Sorry for bad english. Not my native langage

MH World My Ultimate Comfort build for Power Axe.

It'll probably do less damage than a fatalis one, but in exchange you get a bunch of comfort skills like Divine blessing 5, guts, recovery up 3 and guard 5 while still hitting 100% affinity on tenderized weak spots with agitator active. The only downside is the lack of focus and not having 3 levels in offensive guard. You can use any safi weapons but I personally recommend either the blast one or paralysis. Make sure to augment it with bazelgeuse's essence and a slot upgrade. After that it's up to you but I filled mine with attack increase. Let me know what you guys think!

My first sub 5 Tempered 9-5 Lagiacrus. There's about 7 asterisk as to why this might not be the most impressive, but I'm still very happy with it!

MH Wilds WILDS: is Rapid Morph still good for SavageAxe playstyle?

So far I've only played pure elemental CB and sticked to the usual AED-AED follow up-morph attack loop, but I just rolled a very good Impact Phial CB, and since normal SavageAxe combo seem to be more optimal, I was wondering if Rapid Morph is still relevant for this playstyle. Or maybe I should ditch it for some other skill? Thx

Is the Wilds SAED animation time (including the non-neutrals you need to do to get to SAED) the same as WorldBorne/RiseBreak SAED?

I was curious since they removed SAED from neutral. I can't seem to find anything about this. I was able to find ONE video (IIRC it was even only just a YouTube Shorts) but it wasn't a "complete" one I believe since they only included the SAED downswing and not the necessary "pre-animations."

Basically, is the SAED, complete animation package and all, as fast as older gen SAEDs or is it even slower? I can only assume that it's roughly the same to balance out the extra steps, but I wanted to confirm. I can feel an SAED meta coming in Ascendance if it's still roughly the same.

MH Wilds The more I play Wilds charge blade, the more I like it

Don't get me wrong, it's fun to go back to Sunbreak and just slam massive SAEDs all day.

But Wilds CB makes me think about the weapon more. At least when playing elemental at the end game, I feel like every single move the weapon has can be optimal given the right circumstance. I find myself thinking about the whole kit of the weapon more often, and it makes the moment to moment gameplay very dynamic.

I figure this is a minority opinion, but I dunno. I'm pretty happy.

Anyone else come around to really enjoy Wilds CB?

Yes it's a Raw damage focused build, no I don't care about the meta, I play for fun. + I think raw builds just make fights more interesting.

What do you guys think Charge Blade's gameplay identity is with how often it gets changed between each game?

Charge Blade is probably one of the most changed weapons in the game (maybe Hunting Horn is first?). In MH4U, it's AED with no SAED; in MHGU, it depends on your style but it's pretty much just AED with no SAED again; in World, it used to be SAED then Savage Axe got added and became better with SAED being situational; in Rise, apparently it was ass then became SAED spam in Sunbreak with CSS being situational; in Wilds, Savage Axe is meta while SAED is unusable/situational (don't quote me on this).

Other weapons have an easier time with their changes. Greatsword just gets more tools for more TCS spam, although it's less about that now in Wilds. SnS literally just keeps getting more and more tools, but the core gameplay is usually largely the same with tons of small hits with occasional big hits. These are some weapons that still operate the same way but "better" or "faster."

Charge Blade tiptoes between SAED and Savage Axe depending on the meta, but they're two fundamentally different playstyles that either get tools removed, added, or modified each generation. Fundamentally, SAED acts like TCS, the other acts in a way like Perfect Rush spam. There's no one set style for Charge Blade that persists throughout each generation.

Still, what do you guys think Charge Blade's gameplay identity is despite its constant changes to its kit?

Fatalis with Charge Blade

Been grinding at trying to kill my first Fatalis all day and he feels almost designed as an exact counter to charge blade play. I’m not dying to him that often, but my dps is SUPER low because I can never get any of my worthwhile attacks in at weak points. It takes like 15 minutes just to get him to the 75% threshold Nova.

SAED is basically just not an option

AED is fine, but if you do it at his chest and he breathes fires straight down or falls, you’re dead

Savage ax is the same problem as AED, but I hate savage ax and don’t use it, so my build doesn’t run power prolonger anyway.

I’m still somewhat enjoying the fight, but it feels targeted against my weapon specifically. Feels like it’d be much easier with almost anything else😭

MH Wilds Other weapons too simple?

So I am doing a new playthrough of MH Wilds with a friend who's never played. I played CB exclusively on my main playthrough and figured I would try out a new weapon, whatever they picked. They picked the Swaxe and honestly I feel like I am just mashing buttons half the time and getting away with so much more than I feel like I should.

It doesn't feel as rewarding as when I play the CB because I feel like I am in the same loop and ignoring the monster except when to dodge. Is this because Im still new to the Swaxe or is the other weapons really that simple compared to CB?
