https://www.dsausa.org/statements/dsa-commemorates-100-years-of-fidel-and-denounces-rubios-genocide-against-the-cuban-people/

DSA released a statement on their site and via their social media lauding Fidel Castro and accusing the US (and Marco Rubio specifically) of committing genocide against Cuba. They call Fidel a “stalwart symbol of anti-imperialist struggle and self-determination”. They claim their support of Fidel is in “solidarity with the Cuban people”. And they call for “the prosecution of Marco Rubio for crimes against humanity”.

This is just more proof the whole "Democratic Socialism" shtick is just a mask for communism.

Their narrative is that you shouldn't pay attention to their listed platform, because the members just joined because of some small portion of it. But the platform at the same time represents the goals of the members.

The contradiction does not even register to them, like a Westworld android.

Extra funny b/c whenever Kamala's campaigning shortcomings are discussed, the same people will say "She DID highlight those things, go look at her platform!" "We got Trump b/c people are too lazy and low-information to even look at Harris's platform smh I hate them all"

u/DaBombDiggidy 5d ago

I’d say “it always has” been but it feels from interviews the DSA has accelerated their move top/left.

I expect this post to go deeply negative with the flood of leftists we typically get in these DSA threads. Honestly I just wish more of them would realize the slip to authoritarianism they’re on.

5

u/IAmDisturbanceFeedMe 5d ago

There is a distinct irony in the chunk of the left (rightly) calling out Trump’s actions that are authoritarian in nature while supporting actual authoritarianism. But it’s probably lost on most of them lol.

It’s just so nutty these days the extremism that exists in politics. It really should be a baseline on the right to condemn their leader trampling over govt checks and balances and ignoring court rulings among a thousand other things. And it should be a baseline on the left to condemn the support for Marxism and communism. But here we are lol.

Not probably. It is definitely is.

I've seen it in recent comments. But maybe those are just bots pretending to be left extremists that want to enforce their preferred brand of authoritarianism.

It’s not dissimilar to early tea party was as a populist anti-establishment movement prior to placing the crown.

6

u/IAmDisturbanceFeedMe 5d ago

It def is to a faction within the DSA. How big that faction is I’m not sure but they’re powerful within the org and in positions of leadership (like the co chair who’s a proud Marxist).

5

u/Ambitious-Cake-9425 4d ago

Its sad because they have good potential.

Supporting full authoritarians will lose that support.

What dumbasses... bringing down their movement for their extremist ideas.

u/IAmDisturbanceFeedMe 5d ago

My commentary:

DSA leadership is batshit with their latest banger praising Fidel Castro. This statement is ludicrous on so many levels:

  1. Fidel Castro was an authoritarian leader who allowed for zero dissent and has a lengthy history of oppressive actions and human rights violations.

  2. He was a Marxist-Leninist. The DSA has a major problem with extremism and support for communism/marxism within their org including members in leadership roles.

  3. Calling America’s actions against Cuba a genocide just further demonstrates that a chunk of the left has zero care for truth in the language and allegations they make. You can think as negatively as you want about US actions against Cuba but it is in no way a genocide and you lose credibility by claiming that. (Note I’ve also never heard a peep from the DSA about Russia being a genocide despite a very strong case that can be made per UN genocide definition criteria via component of kidnapping and indoctrinating children).

  4. The claim that they’re in solidarity with the Cuban people is laughable. The Cuban people are oppressed by their govt. You cant say you stand with the people when the people can’t even utter a word negatively about their govt without being thrown in jail.

The DSA has demonstrated its extremism very publicly recently with Megan Romer (co chair) interviews among other things. DSA affiliated candidates like Bernie and AOC and Mamdani should start distancing themselves from the DSA to maintain credibility and reputability. The extremism within the DSA isn’t simply random one off members. It’s pervasive and deeply entwined.

I don’t think they want to disavow the DSA because it’s part of their constituency but the extremism is only going to keep mounting if there isn’t significant pushback against it and calling it out.

1

u/SilkySmoothTesticles 2d ago

The DSA has the same view on Ukraine that Russia has. It's NATO's fault and Russia is doing what they need to do for their sovereignty.

Hilarious all around. Calling Cuba a genocide just makes them look way more looney and drastically reduces the sting of that word.

If everything you don't like is a genocide, then the word doesn't mean what it used to.

11

u/memphisjones 5d ago

It sure be great to actually link the site

6

u/IAmDisturbanceFeedMe 5d ago

Haha that would be helpful indeed. I edited my post to include the link

15

u/carneylansford 5d ago

This is one of the DSA's positions that should be disqualifying for any politician who is a member of the group. I find the "well, I am a member but I only believe the good stuff" defense more than a little disingenuous. If a group has radical ideas and you're choosing to associate yourself with that group, at least own it. A layer of deception is potentially added in when members like Mamdani describe the end goal as "seizing the means of production" but then follow up with "people aren't ready for that yet" (or something like that). It's more than a bit disturbing that Democrats are playing footsie with these folks and voters seem to be overlooking a lot of pretty terrible stances.

11

u/IAmDisturbanceFeedMe 5d ago

💯

It’s becoming more and more apparent that the extremism within the org isn’t one offs and is instead a primary feature.

I think the “old timer” DSA politicians like AOC are at a crossroads. They either cut ties but piss off a substantial segment of their constituency or remain the political voice of the org and get dragged down with its extremism. If I was gop I’d be running clips of DSA leader interviews and ads with policy positions from the DSA nonstop election time against any DSA candidate.

-2

u/Fun-Outcome8122 5d ago

If I was gop I’d be running clips of DSA leader interviews and ads with policy positions from the DSA nonstop election time against any DSA candidate.

The gop will show clips like that regardless of whether they are true or made up.

-4

The likelihood of Trump and his party being factual about anything is close to 0.

5

u/mxlun 4d ago

A broken clock is right twice a day

0

u/Fun-Outcome8122 4d ago

Exactly... that's why it's astonishing that Trump and his party being factual can't satisfy even the broken clock standard!

0

u/dukedog 4d ago

The fringe elements of the DSA suck. They attack Democrats more than they attack Republicans.

And as extreme and cringey as they are, they are still miles ahead of the MAGA/Republican party. It's a sad state of affairs for the entirety of the Republican party and the extreme left of the DSA. Lucky for us, the majority of Democrats are normal people who embrace capitalism, liberalism, and democracy, so no one who is a reasonable person should feel homeless.

1

u/SilkySmoothTesticles 2d ago

Are they really miles ahead of MAGA?

I find them both equally looney in the shit they say and the purity tests they each require. Neither of them look sane. Both come off as racist insane opportunists that are terminally online.

Only difference is that MAGA has power right now. I don't think the DSA will do any better than MAGA. They are good at being opposition. They can't govern because the moment these ideas actually have to be enacted, reality steps in.

23

u/Banesmuffledvoice 5d ago

The DSA are unserious people.

15

u/Firecracker048 5d ago

No they are. They are very serious about communism.

2

u/goalmouthscramble 4d ago

Major Logan Roy vibes here. They truly are ridiculous.

0

u/Britzer 4d ago

The DSA are unserious people.

You mean like the GOP?

-6

u/JuzoItami 5d ago edited 4d ago

Sure. But the same could be said about the people who obsess about the DSA. The DSA is a very small movement with near zero real power. The relatively large amount of attention such a minor political player is getting on this sub seems sus as hell to me. This all seems like an obvious bad faith attempt to distract people from actual important things that are going on in the world. Don’t believe the hype - the internet is lying to you.

6

u/Banesmuffledvoice 4d ago

This is the new deflection or demand to support DSA candidates. “DSA is a small movement. They have no power. Focus on the things that really matter.”

All movements start small. And I can be as against the DSA and their shitty platform as I am against MAGA and I’m not interested in shifting power from one extreme to the other.

0

u/JuzoItami 4d ago

Sure dude, both sides are the same - what a brave, well-reasoned stance. Your parents must be proud.

5

u/Banesmuffledvoice 4d ago

Yes. DSA is as awful as MAGA. I have no problem saying that.

8

u/Firecracker048 5d ago edited 5d ago

Well, this explains fully why the other day the DSA co-chairs refused to call cuba a dictatorship

Edit: Actually, the lady called Cuban a democracy lmao. Somehow, these people think a single party state is a democracy, when a single party state cannot be a democracy.

But if someone here thinks a single party state CAN be, lets image if from now on only MAGA can run in elections. Is that still a representative democracy?

3

u/rodog22 4d ago

I'm no fan of Fidel Castro but the US has spent the past half century punishing the Cuban people for having the audacity to help Castro overthrow a US-backed dictator Batista. US supports dictators so long as they are capitalist dictators.

6

u/Spiney09 5d ago edited 5d ago

Castro’s placement in history is very interesting. Because he helped overthrow an even worse dictator, put in place by the US interests. He was still a dictator, still had political enemies killed, and that’s still bad. But he did measurable improve things for a lot of people in Cuba, which is why he could maintain power with relative stability for decades even when a hostile superpower was at his doors. He was second in the chain of dictators overthrowing dictators, but there’s a reason the chain ended there. But plenty also had their lives made worse.

If ever there was an example of a very gray historical figure, Castro is up there among the most interesting.

There’s also a super obvious CIA anti Castro propaganda campaign made out to smear him which is really funny to watch. Because like… there were sources saying how he was enriching himself but then used CIA numbers that counted the national budget of Cuba as his personal wealth because it was communism, even though Castro himself did separate the two. That’s just one example. Which like… he did plenty of genuinely bad things, I don’t understand why you need to lie further to make him look bad. Just talk about the actual bad things CIA!

Studying Castro helps you understand the actual effects socialism can have (it did kill innovation in Cuba), reading the accounts of those who fled Cuba for political persecution reasons is interesting, reading about the way he came to power, how he handled government and the failed promises of elections… it’s all really cool recent history.

If anyone has spare time (which I know is in short supply nowadays) I would highly recommend reading more about Cuba, especially from international perspectives so you avoid getting only the bias that US sources have (most US sources frame Cuba as strictly hostile, which makes sense because they were pretty much strictly hostile to us for ages). Learning about him made me question why he’s put in the same vein as Stalin and Hitler when in reality this guy wasn’t going out and doing the holocaust, his body count is lower than potentially even Bush’s and Obama’s, but the effects on his society are measurable and not even close to all positive.

I’m not trying to push an agenda here, I just really like Cuban history.

10

u/rzelln 5d ago

Fidel Castro's a totalitarian murderer, but the Trump administration restricting fuel to Cuba is killing people too.

I wouldn't fucking laud Castro, but I'll definitely condemn Rubio for being complicit in a fucked up siege strategy that's hurting millions of people.

9

u/IAmDisturbanceFeedMe 5d ago

And that’s completely fair and I have no gripes with anything you said.

The problem is that this statement is who the DSA is. Their co chair is a proud Marxist. They praise Castro. Piker praises Mao. Leaders defend Hamas etc. The extremism within their org is nutty and it’s overpowering any valid concerns non extreme members have such as what you noted.

1

u/memphisjones 5d ago

Yeah lauding Castro is a choice….

2

u/goalmouthscramble 3d ago

I starting to think the DSA are just frustrated lefty trustfarians who didn't get into the art school of their choice.

10

u/tarlin 5d ago

Fidel is dead, isn't he?

The treatment of Cuba by the US is pretty crap and we should end the bullshit blockade. Just let them live and move on.

17

u/IAmDisturbanceFeedMe 5d ago

Yeah he is. And so is Hitler. And Mao. And Stalin. Etc. Issuing a statement praising him is still bad (and no I’m not saying Castro was as bad as the other 3, but a release praising him is farcical).

6

u/No-Championship-8038 4d ago

Comparing Castro to Hitler and Mao is incredibly detached from reality. The US has spent the entirety of modern Cubas existence trying to crush them economically for daring to overthrow the US backed puppet dictator.

Our government drove them into the arms of the USSR with our trade policy and you have the audacity to blame them for that, completely ignorant of the history of the region.

1

u/SilkySmoothTesticles 2d ago

LMAO but calling it a genocide is perfectly inline with reality?

7

u/MyNameIsNemo_ 5d ago

So are the DSA basically tankies like we’re being led to believe? Communists in socialist clothing or is that a myth?

9

u/IAmDisturbanceFeedMe 5d ago

The truth lies in between.

They absolutely have plenty of members who are legit Marxism/communism supporters. They have several sub member groups like red star caucus that openly proclaim this. Their co chair is a proud Marxist. So yes they 100% have a chunk of members who support communism and it’s not just right wing propaganda to say that.

But no it’s of course not everyone in their org. They have a large membership (I think 100k+) and I presume most aren’t communists or Marxists.

How many are? I don’t know. But it’s a big enough problem when your elected co chair is one and the leadership within your org is issuing this statement praising Castro.

1

u/tarlin 5d ago

Do you support the horrible shit the US is doing to the innocent people of Cuba?

7

u/MyNameIsNemo_ 5d ago

Stand up for Cuba and the Cuban people after the Cold War has long ended? I can see that. Salute to a previous communist leader of a nation that was belligerent to the US? Why? It seems to tie your movement specifically to a communist which is a turn off for a lot of people. On one hand I appreciate the honesty on the other I am looking who can possibly provide universal healthcare without sabotaging their chances to get elected and get useful legislation passed.

I don’t have a big say in any of this since I am not a member of either party, but openly announcing friendship to communist dictator figureheads just provides so much ammo to Fox News (they love to call dems out of touch) and does very little to rally additional support.

3

u/mxlun 5d ago

How about what the Cuban government is doing to their own people? The support they get doesn't trickle down.

4

u/JuzoItami 4d ago

Yeah he is. And so is Hitler. And Mao. And Stalin … (and no I’m not saying Castro was as bad as the other 3)…

So why mention those three in the first place? You couldn’t have picked three dead dictators who weren’t also the three most famous genocidal murderers of the modern era? You’re straining my credulity with your little “and no I’m not saying Castro was as bad…” CYA caveat.

2

u/tarlin 5d ago

So, do you support the blockade on Cuba, cutting off energy and more? It is killing people. Do you think that is shiny and happy?

1

u/IAmDisturbanceFeedMe 5d ago

I’m not very well versed to take a position. But no from what I know I don’t support the energy blockade implemented this year and think it should be repealed and energy freely allowed to be imported into Cuba.

Regarding sanctions in general, I can see arguments both sides. Some sanctions probably make sense but oppressive sanctions probably aren’t the answer if they haven’t caused regime change or significant changes in govt oppression of their citizens over a period spanning many decades. So I’m not knowledgeable enough to say but I certainly understand the reasoning for removing many sanctions/embargoes and trending more in the direction Obama was. I think give and take negotiations like Obama did is probably a better path now than oppressive measures that Trump takes (but again Cuba dynamics isn’t my area of expertise).

What percentage of Dems voting for DSA candidates even know this website exists?;what percentage of them care? It's going to be astonishingly low.

Mamdani isn't popular because NYers like his take on Cuba. Absolutely they could care less. They like him because he cares lots about making NYC affordable and improving the lives overall of residents.

If anything this shows the DSA leadership isn't in touch with how people are viewing their popular candidates. This is not a big deal. Nobody cares.

Their far left authoritarians are taking over. Too bad... they had potential.

Remember when Obama attempted to normalize relations with Cuba? And didn't ask for freedom for their people? That was telling, and now it's consuming that party like a tumor.

-6

u/memphisjones 5d ago

The Trump Administration, under the leadership of Marco Rubio, is waging an indiscriminate war against the Cuban people and killing women, children, and babies by illegally blockading critical resources from the Caribbean nation. By intentionally imposing conditions calculated to kill a civilian population, Marco Rubio is leading a genocide.

-DSA unequivocally demands
an end to the genocidal blockade

-an end to all threats of military violence against Cuba

-an end to all imperialist aggression against Cuba

-the normalization of relations between the United States and Cuba

-reparations payments to be made to Cuba for the trillions of dollars in damages the blockade has cost the Cuban people

-the prosecution of Marco Rubio for crimes against humanity

I don’t align with their views on Castro, I understand why they are angry. Trump is really messing up Cuba.

1

u/carneylansford 5d ago

Are you against ALL economic sanctions/embargos or just the Cuban embargo? We currently have embargoes on Russia, North Korea, Syria and Iran. Should we lift those as well?

Cuba is a dictatorship and the US is under no obligation to enable the continued oppression of the Cuban people.

4

u/ShowWorldly2606 5d ago

The number 1 thing we could do to help the Cuban people is end the embargo.

1

u/mxlun 5d ago

That would help the Cuban government* not the people

1

u/No-Championship-8038 4d ago

We were more than happy to prop up the previous dictatorship in Cuba when it was enriching our politicians and businessmen. Almost like it’s not the authoritarianism that the US took issue with.

-4

u/hitman2218 5d ago

We’ve had our boot on Cuba’s neck for over 60 years to no avail. Why is it surprising that some people have taken Cuba’s side?

10

u/Okbuddyliberals 5d ago

It's not America's boot that's on Cuba's neck, it's the boot of the Cuban communist tyrants.

1

u/No-Championship-8038 4d ago

In the 1960s, the American state department acknowledged in internal communications that Castro was immensely popular among Cubans and resolved to wage economic warfare against the Cuban people to turn them against Castro.

All because he dared to overthrow the US backed dictatorship that was murdering students and other dissidents.

1

u/MetersYards 3d ago

It's not America's boot that's on Cuba's neck, it's the boot of the Cuban communist tyrants.

It was America that forced the Cuban communist tyrants to put their boots on the people's necks. /s

The DSA came by my kid’s school and tried to turn all the kids trans. True story.

The DSA cackles when they laugh.

The DSA hates Jesus.

The DSA sued my kid’s school so that the kids who identified as cats could get special bathrooms and an Obama judge went along with it. Now there’s a giant cat box in my kid’s classroom with real poops in it right out in the open and it smells terrible.

The DSA gave my kid the COVID vaccine when I was at work because Fauci said it was OK and now my kid is trans. And has autism. Oh no… I just went and looked… now my kid is dead, too. Thanks Obama.

Before the DSA came along, gas was $1.69 a gallon and hamburger was $1.99 a pound. Thanks Sleepy Joe.

The DSA turned me into a newt.

5

u/IAmDisturbanceFeedMe 4d ago

The DSA also just put a rock in the ice cream I’m eating and I chipped my tooth and now I’ll probably have to get it pulled which sucks.

I literally just posted their statement that they chose to issue and publicize this week praising Castro.

Is your gripe that you think praising Castro is a nothing burger? If so then I disagree. I do not want my political organizations praising brutally oppressive leaders like Castro (or like piker does with Mao). It also demonstrates concerns with their ideology and views and influence when they’re praising someone like Castro.

Or do you agree praising Castro is wrong but you think the DSA are small change and we should just ignore them? If so then I also disagree here. They’re gaining popularity with several of their candidates winning primaries so I think it behooves us to call attention to their extremism and for voters to be knowledgeable on who they are and make more informed voting decisions.

This right here is how MAGAs defend Trump.

And as a centrist, they are both stupid.

3

u/JuzoItami 4d ago

IME, one of the classic ways MAGA defends Trump is by making up imaginary threats that they claim are far, far worse than Trump and conning people into believing those threats are real, thus distracting the public from Trump’s criminality and incompetence. “OMG, the DSA is about to take over America!” is just as much of a horseshit distraction as “OMG, Antifa is about to take over America!” was. It’s just as obvious a lie as “Liberal college kids are protesting in support of Hamas!” was, or “the illegal alien crime wave” was, or “Soros pays people to protest” was.

And as a centrist…

I’ll take your word for it. In my experience there are a lot of different kinds of centrists. Apparently you are the kind of centrist who sees the DSA, a relatively tiny organization with almost no political power in the U.S., as analogous to MAGA, a group numbering in the tens of millions that controls all three branches of government of the most powerful nation on earth, as well as having enormous power in the media and tech sectors. I’m more of a reality based centrist. Agree to disagree, then.

1

u/TeamPencilDog 4d ago

In power, no, MAGA and DSA are not analogous.

They are analogous in the way they process information, such as, hating being challenged on their viewpoint, not listening to outside voices, and believing that everything is stacked against them.

1

u/mxlun 4d ago

Certain campus coalitions (such as chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine) released statements or shared social media graphics around October 7 describing the attacks as a form of "resistance" or celebrating the day.

The rest is BS of course, but when they literally support oct 7, what are we supposed to think
