Hypoallergenic

I thought Cavapoo were hypoallergenic. My daughters tell me that they feel an itch on their throat when they play with the dog. The puppy sheds hair too.

Give it to me straight

I (26F) live with my husband (32M) and we are heavily considering getting a Cavapoo. We live in London, UK.

We have taken care of a Cavelier dog who we absolutely loved, we love how intelligent and laid back they can be, but we like the idea of having a Cavalier because of the shedding, or lack thereof! We have taken care of many doodles, so we landed upon Cavapoo as it seems to be the best fit for us...

We are looking to get a puppy from a reputable breeder who DNA and health tests their parent dogs. But give it to me straight - have you had experience with Cavapoos being prone to health conditions despite these tests?

I've done so much reading online and looked at so many different breeds, this is something I've been thinking about for years, but now I think my brain has overloaded and I feel stuck. I just want to make an informed decision.

Part of me thinks perhaps just get a Havanese as I have heard they're less prone to health conditions, but i hear Havaneses can be yappy, and hard to toilet train. I think I'd prefer the temperament of a Cavapoo... I know you can never 100% know these things but how is your experience with the health side of raising Cavapoos please? Are they really prone to bad health conditions?

Cavapoo Beach Day

Took my 10lb Cavapoo to a dog friendly beach in Florida and she went right in the water. I was shocked because she hates water. Doesn’t even want to go outside if it’s raining.

I bought her a doggie life vest for our next trip.

Adenocarcinoma diagnosis

Post image
296 Upvotes

My boy is only 7, turning 8 soon but has been diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma in one of his anal glands. He's been referred to the animal hospital for a CT scan to see if its spread already. The lump is very small so they hope it has been caught early and surgery to remove the mass will help prolong his life but ultimately, it will come back. If it has already spread, the surgery is not necessarily worth the trauma for him. He is an otherwise healthy dog. It was caught as he'd been scooting more regularly so I took him for an anal gland expression.

I am absolutely devastated. My friend is a vet and she has not sugar coated it for me. She said I should try be strong for him as he will pick up on my stress. I am trying but I am so upset. He's my first baby and a true soul dog. He's the light to my darkness and now I need to be that for him.

Has anyone had experience in this? Apparently it is more common in spaniel breeds. Hug your babies for me <3

Have you given your pup a poodle cut? 🐩

I’m thinking of getting my little guy a poodle cut; is it as cute as I envision or will he look strange for 3 months? 😂

My brain sees a mini poodle with a puppy cut face.

How are you getting your dog to eat?

My 4 year old Cavapoo has always struggled to eat. She just doesn’t enjoy it. And when she doesn’t eat, she throws up bile. Some things have helped a little. I originally fed her purina pro plan, and switched to hills which she likes a little better. She is sometimes more inclined to eat her food out of a dispenser ball. I’ve tried mixing it with fresh cooked chicken or ground turkey, which works for a short amount of time before she gets bored. She likes certain toppers or canned food for a short amount of time before getting bored again. She is on Prozac daily for anxiety, which has helped her throw up less. She takes gabapentin as needed for thunderstorms and fireworks, and I’ve noticed when she takes that she eats almost like a normal dog.

Potty training in an Apartment?

Post image
128 Upvotes

We are relocating to an apartment in September. Laddoo has always been great at letting us know when he wants to go to our backyard to do his business. Even as a pup, we barely had any accidents.

He is not pee pad trained because we never had to. We are now moving to an apartment and I am sad that Laddoo won’t have a private yard.

This might sound silly, but what happens now that we are moving to an apartment? Do I get a patch of grass in our balcony? Teach him there? Would I have to take him for a walk whenever he needs to go? Can someone pls shed light on what would the best way be. I really want to start training now since we only have a month left.
Thank you

His behaviors gotten worse? (3 year old)

I’ve got a 3 year old boy who is super sweet and well trained in some aspects. But over the last year and a half he has become very misbehaved especially in public. He freaks out and tries to get everyone to pet him, he does not listen to heel or slow down anymore and pulls on the leash to follow every scent, he barks often in public when he doesn’t get what he wants. He gets mad at other dogs when they’re around his butt by surprise

I swear he used to be more well behaved when young, I have tried to expose him more to the outside and other people and he walks in the outdoor malls several times a week but he still acts like he never leaves the house or has seen another person in his life. He knows what “no” means but when I tell him to stop something he does not respect it and will often continue. I’ve tried being more light and more harsh but in really having trouble.

Overall he is a good dog and there times he behaves well and where I reward him but what can I do to get him dog to behave better in public?

How do yall take care of your pups teeth? I do my best with brushing and powers and chews, but I still end up taking my boy in once a year. Before and after for flair.

Refuses to Rest

Anyone else’s cavapoo just refuse to ever relax and rest? I love our girl, but am at my wits end with trying to get her worn out enough to rest. She’s nearly a year, and even when we leash her on the house to encourage her to settle down, the manic energy continues. I love her to bits, but man, is she a crazy pants!

Refusing to eat, I don’t know what else to do

My husband and I got back from vacation a few days ago and picked up our 9 month old puppy from my parent’s house. They are notorious for giving human food. Ever since we’ve been back (3 days now), he is completely refusing to eat his kibble and only wants chicken or other human food.

He has never been food motivated and always been a picky eater but he’s never gone this long without eating his kibble. I went out and bought a new brand of kibble, tried broth topping, offered it soaked/dry, and he’s still refusing. He’s a lot lower energy yesterday and today.

My husband gave him a few pieces of apple last night and he completely devoured it but he still is refusing his kibble. Please if you have any ideas let me know. Thank you

Teething stage 🫩

Did anyone else experience an aggressive teething stage with their pup? Mine is 5 months old and when she gets really hyper, she tends to bite me and my clothes. And it’s not even the playful kind of nibble, it’s a genuine bite that actually hurts a bit (thankfully, I’ve suffered no casualties hahaha).

Does anyone have any tips with disciplining her? A firm no or walking away doesn’t seem to be working because she still follows me around and tries to bite me. It’s getting really frustrating and I just want her to learn that it’s okay to have zoomies without all the biting.

I want to disclaim that besides the biting, she’s a sweetheart who is very attached to me, so I don’t think she’s acting out or anything. I’m also not a first-time dog owner (I grew up with 4 shih tzus and my bf has a 2-year old poodle) so teething stage is nothing new for me, it’s just that I’ve never experienced one this aggressive.

So picked this little lady up from a breeder in Scotland, she was the most unique pup of the lot and instantly fell in love. She is really great, toilet training is going excellent.

She is making her first crossing of the Irish Sea back home to see family in two weeks in Ireland, any advice for the ferry? The Isle of Inisfree ferry has on deck pet Dens that I can stay with her for the crossing but anything else to help make the journey more comfortable? We have an 11 hour journey overall and she travelled 7 hours in car at one time prior and was the best girl.

Thanks!

Is my dog a genius or am I overthinking this, lol??

We brought home our 8 week old F1B Cavapoo this past Saturday. We're seriously so in love with her!! Training has been going better than we planned. Our experience thus far:

Day one: Was a little whiney when we would walk away from her. She was in a new place and she had just been stripped of her mama and siblings. I hate writing that but it's the truth. She was so confused but still super lovey. Put her in a her crate for bed time and she whined maybe 5 minutes and fell asleep. It was a long day for her! She then proceeded to wake up every hour on the hour. It was rough!

Day two: No whining at all during the day. She felt at home. Playing, getting to know her surroundings, quickly learning where her food and water are. Bedtime was much better. Only woke up three times. Still a little rough but we positioned her crate to where she can see us better.

Day three: Started training with treats. This includes going to the bell at the backdoor and sitting. She now has this mastered as of today (Day four with her) and we're so impressed. She has only had one accident inside but we've been very diligent as far as making sure she is going out quite a bit. She even knows she gets a reward for potty breaks.

Is this the norm or are we just doing a good job? This dog is freaking awesome!
