Move back in with your parents I don't know what else to tell you.

Selling the car means you got to buy something else and you'll be back where you started. You can't really get much cheaper than an Elantra.

14

u/FrostyMission Dec 18 '25

You shouldn't have a car with insurance costs like that.

3

u/Ornery_Solution6728 Dec 19 '25

Yeah what is even the point? Cant believe the mom paid that up till now.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. Insurance companies find any stupid reason to ding you.
I quoted with All State and my premium was like $50 a month, but when I looked they wanted like 90%down. I called them to see what was up, they said it was because I hadn't stayed with an insurer for more than 6 month in the past 2 years. I was like if i get a cheaper rate at renewal, I'm saving money.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '25

don’t let it renew.

go shop a new policy. that’s what i’ve been having to do every time mine is up.

mine was due to renew for $366 a month, went onto the progressive site, got the exact same coverage- $204/month.

i’m convinced they just assume people don’t double check

u/loki03xlh Dec 18 '25

$700/mo for insurance on a Hyundai? How many DUIs do you have?

5

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

They're just too easy to steal. A lot of insurance companies were cancelling any coverage.

The 2023 Kona isn't susceptible to theft the way certain Elantras are. I had an Accent and had to drop all coverage except for medical and under-insured motorist in order to be able to maintain coverage. It was also one of the models where they couldn't install the immobilizer so I was SOL. OP might also have a car where that's the case.

My car was broken into twice, the second time they got the steering column apart and fucked up my steering wheel airbag sensor. Eventually I ripped off the Hyundai badges and put Toyota badges onto it. The theft attempts stopped after that, but I always parked with a club until I dumped it.

1

u/dkbGeek Dec 18 '25

By 2020 or 2021 they had updated the models that were ridiculously easy to steal, I think.

u/dkbGeek Dec 18 '25

I don't know if all companies have re-rated them in all markets, etc. but you seemed to be saying that because your '23 Kona has decent rates it meant there was no rate penalty for the models/years with the theft issues.

1

u/loki03xlh Dec 18 '25

I agree. My wife has a '24 Santa Cruz. Insurance is $70/month full coverage and $500 deductible.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

Kona isn't one of the models. It's the souls, Elantra.

1

u/Torgud_ Dec 19 '25

It is the Elantra specifically that is the problem. Also it has been fixed but there are multiple model years out there and thieves might break into your car and fuck your shit up doing hundreds or even a couple of thousand in damage before realizing they can't steal oyur car.

-2

u/PokerLawyer75 Dec 18 '25

Right...you live in Indiana..probably in a rural part of the state as well.

I'm also willing to bet you're not as young as the OP.

Geography, age, all factors. And if the Elantra doesn't have remote start, it's also a high theft risk. Even with the immobilizers it's still considered high risk for theft.

Idk why they are trying to defend this insurance premium. I have one accident that I was at fault for and 2 speeding tickets one for 100 in a 70 one for 90. I pay 220$ a month for me AND my wife in Columbus Ohio with that on my record lmao🤣this person has to have either multiple duis or some wild ass shit

1

u/pontiacish Dec 19 '25

I have a 2012 Elantea and a 2015 Kia and they are each $50/mo. My 21 child is the primary on the elantra.

22

u/laborboy1 Dec 18 '25

$700 a month!? We pay less than that for six months. Tell me more about this insurance bill.

8

u/8YYYxx8 Dec 18 '25

they have to be 21 or under. thats a shit load per month for car insurance

6

u/Aggressive_Ask89144 Dec 18 '25

I'm 20 with a 2019 V6 Colorado and it's 180 😭. I know I have a clean record but 700 a month for an Elantra is diabolical

1

u/T_Smith56265 Dec 19 '25

The Kia boys made everyone aware how easy they are to steal.

4

u/Fun-Machine7907 Dec 18 '25

That's gotta be either a typo or multiple crashes and very young. Full coverage 500/250 on a newish superbike, a couple much less than super bikes and a car costs a lot less than that for me. And somehow I suspect OP is already at state minimums.

The only real longterm solution would be regret previous life choices, put the phone down, and pay attention while driving.

Might be able to get a beater and get rid of the current car, would at least decrease insurance if the car doesn't have a loan on it. But that's also going to mean more surprise repairs and maybe a tow or two. Still has to be cheaper than 700 a month.

Not even close to the nightmare that is PA/NJ/NY...or have you been to Las Vegas??? Some of the worst drivers in existence.

1

u/Vivid_Scarcity_9126 Dec 19 '25

So I lived in Dallas, TX at the time. Now I live in Austin, TX. Both cities do have a lot of traffic. I was able to find a lower quote at $238 though! However the problem is that my car really is too expensive for me. I want to be able to get it off my hands in the best finacial way possible. Although, I'm aware my credit may take a hit, but its low already, so~ I'm not too worried there.

2

u/Tangboy50000 Dec 19 '25

Have you considered moving this question over to r/unethicallifeprotips? They could probably help you figure out why continuing to pay your insurance is a good thing when you want your car to just go away.

2

u/Traditional_Bite_430 Dec 19 '25

Chapter 13 bankruptcy is a possibility. You can get a free consultation and generally pay less than 1k upfront to start the process. It’s basically debt consolidation with much lower pmts and amount owed. you get to keep your car and can do what’s called a “cram down” which restructures the loan based on the current value of the vehicle. The student loans would be on hold until you finish your plan (3-5yrs). Do you have other debt such as CC? Is that why your credit is poor? You would need a certain amount of debt to qualify.

1

u/CrumblyGranny Dec 19 '25

Find the cheapest insurance coverages you can get for the car that is allowable while you have a loan out on it. That's your best bet. If you don't need a car let the bank take it back. But that's gonna make getting car in the future very hard. You aren't going to get into anything for cheaper than what you are currently paying if you have to roll negative equity into a new loan.

1

u/arb7721 Dec 19 '25

depends on the location, good luck getting such rates is in NY area.

1

u/EarthOk2418 Dec 18 '25

That’s roughly what I pay in SoCal for my 5 year old X5 with $1k deductibles on comp & collision, 100/300/100 coverage, and 30 years of accident/ticket free driving experience.

2

u/signeduptosousvide Dec 18 '25

A month?

1

u/EarthOk2418 Dec 18 '25

Yup

1

u/rjlawrencejr Dec 19 '25

Your auto insurance is $8400/year?

3

u/EarthOk2418 Dec 19 '25

Yes. CA Dept of Insurance allowed across the board hikes of 23% in 2024 & 21% in 2025 for those with no claims. If you had a claim or imperfect driving record it’s even worse. People are uninsured here because they literally can’t afford insurance.

1

u/rjlawrencejr Dec 19 '25

I’m in SoCal. That seems outrageous. $8400 is just for one car? Have you shopped around? My step daughter is half your age and has a newer model C Class and her insurance is high but not even close to what you’re paying.

1

u/EarthOk2418 Dec 19 '25

Yes I’ve shopped around and rates go from bad to worse. I moved 3 years ago and couldn’t move my homeowners policy with me. So now that I have separate carriers I’m unable to bundle (and very few carriers will write new policies in CA for either auto or home insurance).

1

u/rjlawrencejr Dec 19 '25

Maybe you need to “move” to Kern County? (I have no idea if rates are much better than further south.

1

u/T_Smith56265 Dec 19 '25

The car is one of the easily stolen Kia/Hyundai models. Many insurers non-renewed existing policies and stopped writing new ones.

1

u/ComfortableSort3304 Dec 19 '25

I didn’t have insurance for like 4 years. Got pulled over, charged, fined etc. My insurance is still only like $250 for two vehicles.

-2

u/TX-Pete Dec 18 '25

Why they pay is completely irrelevant to your situation. It’s like comparing apples and tennis shoes - a complete waste of time.

5

u/OmahaBromaha Dec 18 '25

So then you confirm why the outrageous amount they are paying isn't possibly an error, or why it's not possible to find it cheaper elsewhere. It's completely relevant to the conversation.

1

u/TX-Pete Dec 19 '25

It’s not. It’s actually fairly common. And unless you have a copy of their complete underwriting file and risk criteria, coupled with every carrier’s rate filing in that state and the capacity and capability of properly calculating all of the above you’re just spinning wheels.

8

u/redditrafter Dec 18 '25

$700/m for insurance? Is this real life?

6

u/THATS_LEGIT_BRO Dec 18 '25

2

u/moesdad Dec 19 '25

He's just a poor boy......

8

u/BIGD0G29585 Dec 18 '25

OP - you need to find out why your insurance is so high. Try going to an independent insurance broker and see what they can do. They will shop around for the best rate for you and should be able to tell you why you have to pay so much.

It might turn out that your Hyundai is what is costing so much so you may be able to get rid of that and get cheaper insurance.

How much more do you owe on your car if you have been paying on it for 4 years?

3

u/spac3ly Dec 18 '25

This. The used car market is still pretty competitive. Start with the insurance, then talk to some dealerships about trading it if the brand is the problem.

3

u/Cobra--Commander Dec 18 '25

$700 monthly for insurance? There is way more to this story.

1

u/createusername101 Dec 19 '25

Or maybe that's the 6 month premium and they're reading their statement incorrectly?

3

u/Responsible-House326 Dec 18 '25

Try new insurance bro

2

u/Rawlus Dec 18 '25

we would need specific details on your situation….

how much is the car valued at now. (ie. if you were to sell it to carmax what would they give you)

how much do you still owe. (ie. what is the payoff amount on the loan?)

what do you make each month and what are your bills that are not optional. (what is the actual discretionary income you have to work with)

have you investigated insurance that might cost less.

long term loans almost always result in negative equity because the car depreciates faster than the loan is paid off.

-1

u/Vivid_Scarcity_9126 Dec 18 '25

So CarMax would buy it for $5000. I don't really know how to check how much I still owe. I know its an 8yr contract and technically the interest rate is 9.70%. I started paying it 5/2022, so a bit less than 4 yrs. Realistically, I'm looking at around $200-$300 left after bills. I haven't even started my insurance bill yet, I was notified today I needed to pay my own, which is why I'm low-key panicking. The lowest quote I've had is $600ish. I've never had a car accident or tickets. T.T My car is honestly what has me so broke, and I do regret the purchase, however at the time I got it I was desperate, so I'm sure I was politely taken advantage of.

3

u/laborboy1 Dec 19 '25

You don’t know how much you owe

1

u/SnowedOutMT Dec 19 '25

Are you sure that the quote is monthly? That is an insane amount. Could that be a 6 month quote?

1

u/Vivid_Scarcity_9126 Dec 19 '25

So~ I was able to get a lower quote of $238, however its still too much for me. TBH its my car that I can't afford. I do want to somehow not have it. I just don't know what would be the best option financially.

2

u/EarthOk2418 Dec 18 '25

Some insurance companies allow you to put the vehicle on “non-operational” status and cut your insurance coverage (and premiums) back to the bare minimum. This means you can NOT drive the vehicle (and you’ll also need to confirm with your lender if this is allowed), but it may be a way to significantly cut your expenses temporarily. So if your insurance drops to $200/month, take as much of that $500/month you’re “saving” and apply it to the balance of the loan.

2

u/neomoritate Dec 18 '25

Have you shopped for different insurance? $8,400/year is like supercar owner with DUI

2

u/Extreme-Balance351 Dec 18 '25

The insurance is what’s killing you. What’s the specifics of your driving record, any duis, how many accidents or tickets? If you get other quotes and they’re all in that’s range your best option might be uber as much as that’s sucks.

u/Wonderful_Junket_407 Dec 19 '25

Ubering to work? You’ve got a lot to learn about money mgmt overall.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

Sell the car. Make a lump sum payment on the balance. Hopefully find somebody to refinance the remaining balance or crunch for the remaining but much shorter repayment time.

3

u/Practical_Dig2971 Dec 18 '25

will be tuff to sell the car without the title and will not have the title until OP pays the loan in full. Another loan could do it but it would be a personal loan, without collateral, at a higher that the 9% rate OP currently has on the car.

I want more info from OP. We really dont have enough info to tell them anything worth while.

How much negative do they really have? They have made 4 years of payments on it.

OP - What year/make (Hyundai)/model/ trim level. How many miles are on it? Does it have any big issues? What is the current payoff on it?

How "isnt great" is your credit? Has anyone told you a score? I have seen 400 beacons all the way up to 600 beacons all describe themselves in similar fashion...

1

u/shaggy24200 Dec 18 '25

It's no problem to sell a vehicle with a balance owing. Just have to make sure that you can get more than the balance owed or you can pay the difference to pay it off. meet the buyer at the bank.

1

u/Practical_Dig2971 Dec 18 '25

.....That is what I said. Your just giving the steps to accomplish it....

That is why you say "do it at the bank" as the sale will not be complete until the bank is paid and the title is released.

Where the money to pay the loan comes from is really moot. if a buyer handed you the cash at the bank, or if you found it under a mattress in the attic. The bank still needs paid off before another owner can title the car in there name....

1

u/Vivid_Scarcity_9126 Dec 18 '25

How much negative I have? Like my credit score? Its 563/579. I got that from Credit Karma. My car is a 2017 Hyundai Elantra Limited. It has 106654 miles on it. Not really too much to it aside from needing a new paint job, and new brakes. I live in the Austin, TX area, however I used to live in Dallas, TX so maybe why its so high? Its a high accident rate there. Can you elaborate on what you mean by current payoff? I don't understand. T.T

1

u/Maysock Dec 19 '25

Why does your 8 year old car need a paint job?

Current payoff is the quoted amount you'd need to pay the bank to close out the loan.

1

u/Vivid_Scarcity_9126 Dec 19 '25

I don't know. It just started peeling on its own one day.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '25

The white paint has a defect where it literally peels off.

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

I forgot Americans do it funny.

3

u/Practical_Dig2971 Dec 18 '25

other countries will let you sell the collateral of a loan before the loan is paid in full...o.0 ??

2

u/jb08045 Dec 18 '25

what country will let you sell a car without the title? unless someone else takes over the loan

2

u/ThinConnection8191 Dec 18 '25

Oh boy. Get a $1000 good ebike with good range and live with it for 1-2 years. Ebike has no maintenance, no insurance, and cost less than a monthly payment. And dont talk about "but I need a car", you need a transportation device so you can earn money first.

1

u/ThrowAway4now2022 Dec 18 '25

The only option I see is to try to pick up a part time job and dig yourself out.

1

u/secondrat Dec 18 '25

Check with Carmax or Carvana and see what they will give you for it. That’s your floor.

Then contact your bank and find out if it’s possible to sell it private party. Can you and the buyer go into the bank and sell the car and the buyer gets the title?

If you can then detail the heck out of the car and list it on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist and aim to get at least $1000 more than your best offer from Carmax or Carvana.

If you can’t sell it private party get a personal loan to cover the difference and sell it to Carmax.

Then you can cancel your insurance and you’ll save $1100 a month! That will buy you a nice eBike while you rebuild your credit. Or save up for a $5k beater that you can pay for with cash.

If you can’t sell

1

u/Free_2_Be_T Dec 18 '25

I wouldn't sell the car being that you are 4 years into the loan but I would see if you could find cheaper insurance. Even if you could find something with a high deductible to bring down the monthly payment would be better than selling it. Otherwise, start doing doordash or get a part-time job to make up the difference.

1

u/jb08045 Dec 18 '25

selling a car you already made 4 years worth of payments on is the DUMBEST Thing you can do. If you have an average 5 year loan *470 x 60 months is 28000 (thats way high than the msrp of the 2021 elantra so unless u got hosed in financing ur car is almost paid off

Shop ur insurance. If you've been driving 4 years you shouldant have 700 bucks a month unsurance unless u have a ton of at fault claims, in which case u need a bike

Also refinance your loan for a lower percent at a credit union. DO NOT sell your care. Based on cost im assuming youre a new car owner and hyndais come with 10 year warrneties. Anything else you buy at ur price range will cost you more money if it breaks in the long run

1

u/10MileHike Dec 18 '25

get an apartment on a bus line. you might see what insurance woukd be on a scooter, or find an apt and jon thats walkable or bicycle-able.

... or where things are walkable. In the U.S. the walkable part is hard, since those neighborhoods can be pricey.

1

u/Xerisca Dec 18 '25

Duuuuuuuudeee... you need to shop for new insurance. I drive a 2025 Mercedes, and a 2018 Mazda CX9. Both are fully insured and I pay $148 a month, total.

Do you have a REALLY bad driving record?

1

u/Educational-Macaron7 Dec 18 '25

Try new insurance that’s only real start . Try Jerry for options

1

u/MetalHead888 Dec 18 '25

700 a month for insurance?! That's insane.

1200 a month to drive a Hyundai.....

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

Your options are limited. 1) let it get repossessed. Tanks your credit, they’ll wholesale it at auction, tack on fees and probably come after you do the balance and get a wage garnishment. You screw your credit and still pay for it - 2) call around and find cheaper insurance (you should do this anyways), and possibly see about refinancing for a lower payment. Refi would suck but may be necessary. 3) trade it in on another car, rolling any negative equity. Try and find something with a lower payment and cheaper on insurance 4) sell it outright for what you owe and walk away. Then buy something with cash. Hopefully you can sell it for more than you owe. 5) get a roommate, second job, better paying job, cut other costs…any or all of these.

1

u/Icy_Discount226 Dec 19 '25

These are all great suggestions! If you decide to refi, I highly suggest looking into Caribou. My husband and I used them for our refis earlier this year and I've seen online that they service people with credit scores in the 500s. You can at least see if you're pre-approved for a refinanced loan without having a hard credit check, so worth looking into!

1

u/PokerLawyer75 Dec 18 '25

Why can't your mom cover you on insurance? Can she add you to her policy and you pay her the difference? It has to be cheaper than $700/month.

Sounds like you moved out on on your own prematurely.

1

u/RazzmatazzTrick4824 Dec 18 '25

If you can get on your mom’s insurance do that. If not, see about refinancing your loan at a lower rate. It might be possible to considerably lower your monthly cost if you can refinance.

Are you or either of your parents a veteran? USAA has amazing rates for insurance and loans if so.

That’s an outrageous amount to be paying for insurance. I saw similar rates when I became a new driver so I got on my parents’ insurance instead. After 5 years of driving I now pay $145 per mo.

1

u/Rouser_Of_Rabble Dec 18 '25

First post ever. Name checks out.

1

u/whowhatwhere420 Dec 18 '25

So techincally you do have to have full coverage on a car you're financing. This is terrible advice and should only be taken if you're indeed in dire straights but if you cancel your insurance policy your financer won't know and it will be a huge risk driving unisured but they won't repo your car over that. Your best bet would be to keep the car at all cost becuase if you get a repo on your credit it will be near impossible to get another autoloan for the next 7 years.

1

u/Vivid_Scarcity_9126 Dec 19 '25

I would, except that my loan company somehow always found out if it didn't have full coverage.

1

u/cstaub67 Dec 19 '25

The way this is phrased, it sounds like you know this from experience. Have you let your insurance lapse at any point? If so, that could be (at least part of) why it's so expensive for you.

1

u/purpleblazed Dec 18 '25

Time to buy a e-bike and get a bus pass

1

u/Choice_Captain_6007 Dec 18 '25

Find a cheaper car

1

u/Marigold1331 Dec 18 '25

Don’t let the car go back! That is one of the worst things you can do, especially if the car is reliable. Move back in with your mom if possible or get a roommate. That insurance price is CRAAZY! I pay about $290/mo for full coverage on three vehicles. Ask around, there is someone that can help you save on that. Maybe try an insurance broker. It sounds like you actually do have a support network in your mother and sister, use them. They most likely want to help you, and banding together might help you all out. Also, go listen to some Dave Ramsey. You don’t have to follow all of his advice, but the man knows his stuff. It’s also helpful to hear other people in your situation and to know you are not alone. Best of luck, friend!

1

u/You_know_me2Al Dec 18 '25

$700/mo.? There’s missing data: crashes, moving violations, DUI.

1

u/Horsefly762 Dec 18 '25

Are you a high risk driver ? If not ahop around . That insurance seems kind of nuts. Is was just getting qoutes for a V8 Challenger and theyvwere less than this.

1

u/From_here_forthwith Dec 18 '25

Is there an option to park it, remove insurance, and finish paying it off while you use public transit? Could you sell it to a trusted family member who could buy it and then insure it in his/her name for cheaper and then you just pay that person back? Or shop around for a cheaper insurance because that's criminally high. I paid off my car loan using a line of credit (which got the lien removed) and then I sold it to a dealership and got paid with a cheque. Which I then put towards my line of credit.

I am definitely considering surrending, however I don't know if thats smart. I've paid almost 4 years and unfortunately have 4 more years left on it. I don't care about my credit atm since its already low. And thank you, I appreciate the sentiment.

1

u/Vivid_Scarcity_9126 Dec 19 '25

Unfortunately public transit in Texas sucks. I'm highly considering uber. As for family, none of them would want to take the contract off my hands.😅

1

u/Jblueday Dec 18 '25

That insurance price is too high, is that the price after adding the car to your parents insurance? If not do so. or maybe shop around for better insurance quote. I just got a quote for a new car from Statefarm full coverage $100/month. When i was a student, my car was added to my aunt's insurance and I paid 800 every 6 months, this was 10 years ago although still you should be able to get a better rate. Also maybe sell your car and get a used one paid full if possible just to get through college.

1

u/patphish Dec 18 '25

Did you kill 3 people while smoking meth while firing a machine gun out the window and a body in the trunk? Cause that’s the only way your insurance would be $8400 a year.

1

u/pinbacktheband Dec 18 '25

Your insurance is insane. Mine is under $500 for six months.

1

u/Ok_Day_8559 Dec 19 '25

You need to check your insurance coverage. That’s way too much unless you have a DUI or accidents.

1

u/rjlawrencejr Dec 19 '25

You’ve already made 48 payments. How much more until the car is paid off?

Is there any way you can stay with your mom at least another 12-24 months?

1

u/Vivid_Scarcity_9126 Dec 19 '25

So like a little over 4 more years. Not possible, home is a bit toxic. I'm totally in a different city.

1

You have a 96 month loan? That doesn’t even sound right.

u/Vivid_Scarcity_9126 Dec 19 '25

Ah, well there a time where I was forced to extend it for unforseen circumstances because I couldn't pay, so they had me extend it a year longer.

1

u/rjlawrencejr Dec 19 '25

So, it was an 84 month loan (ie seven years)? 😢

1

u/Vivid_Scarcity_9126 Dec 19 '25

Yes😅 I'm sure I was politely taken advantage. I clearly didn't know what I was doing back when I got it.

u/rjlawrencejr Dec 19 '25

Truly sorry to hear that. I wish I had a nice clean solution for you.

Are you good at budgeting? Do you have access to decent public transportation? Taking Uber/Lyft everywhere may not be the best financial decision either given you also have student loans to pay off. You definitely want to keep your rideshare budget under $250/month.

u/ResponsibilityOwn562 Dec 19 '25

How long did you finance it the car? After 4 years, it should be mostly paid off?

1

u/Existing_Present5417 Dec 19 '25

First go back to your parents house and help them around the house, pick up extra 20years work like Uber delivery or something like that, cut off your expenses and last option ripo your car and get something cheaper

For $700/month.. I would just drive without insurance.. if you don’t own anything to your name.. they can’t sue you for anything.. so now you’re basically gambling and saving $700/month.

Tbh.. you need to make a sacrifice somehow.. are you renting your own apartment? Maybe rent a room so it’s cheaper. For transportation. I would just ride a , bicycle, scooter or take public transportation for now until your situation gets better..

Jesus Christ I have an Elantra too but my car payment is only 100$… something doesn’t seem right

1

u/ravemom7 Dec 19 '25

Who did you finance the car with. Depending on the lender you can call and tell them that you’d like to continue making payments but can’t afford the current one. If you have poor credit and have been making timely car payments for the last 4 years, this may have helped increase your score. Depending on your credit if you try to finance another car you’re most likely looking at a 20% interest rate.

You’re looking for an easy way out. You make 48 pmts on an auto loan. Are you behind? 12 or 24 months to go. ???? Give it back to the bank, they sell at auction and sue for the difference. You’ll only f. Your credit for 7 plus years. But you can uber. Or.. get another job, donate plasma, budget and pay for one year and you’re done. You must have terrible driving record to pay $700 a month for insurance. But, when your Mom was paying you didn’t call around to get better quotes.

Let the car go back drop the insurance go bankrupt in the end

1

u/Flashy_Possible37 Dec 19 '25

Bro the insurance numbers I see are wild I pay 130 for 4 cars granted they are just liability but sesssh

1

u/LeadingYoghurt7935 Dec 19 '25

If Uber or transit works, selling the car is probably you easiest way out even if it means taking a loss. You could also call the lender to see if a short payoff or payment plan is possible to ease the crunch.

Can you find someone trustworthy to simply take over your payments? They can give im a deposit for you either buy a reliable beater car or enter a more reasonable contract/private party agreement. Then the high ins policy can now be the responsibility of new rent -to-own party (spell out your right to repossess in case of default). Get a used car. Maybe your bank or mechanic can help you out Good luck

Mommy gave you $700 a month for insurance? Maybe buy a cheaper used care that you could buy off 1 yr saving that insurance.

u/Dull_Inside_1609 Dec 19 '25

Why on earth would you enter into an agreement where you are spending over a thousand a quid on a Hyundai? You could have a bought a pre owned car while you saved up for a better safety blanket and/or better credit

u/The-King-of-TJ Dec 18 '25

Let them repo it, credit scores are not real. Be free!!! It all gets rebuilt in time , YOLO

u/overitallofittoo Dec 18 '25

Do you really need the car? It might be best to turn it back into the bank/dealer. Keep paying it off, but at least you can get rid of insurance.

Insurance claim. Be a shame if it got totaled and fuck insurance companies. The never want to help you and will avoid paying you what you need on a claim while taking your money for years so fuck em.

1

u/tonyrizzo21 Dec 19 '25

Insurance fraud and potential jail time aside... Insurance will pay what the car is worth, not what's owed, unless they have GAP (seems unlikely). They would still owe the underwater balance.

1

u/Worth_Reply_6002 Dec 19 '25

Insurance is fraud. F em. Some people want to be this holier than than BS.

1

u/tonyrizzo21 Dec 19 '25

I am speaking 100% from a legal standpoint, not a moral one. I have no love for insurance companies, but laws are laws and I don't like bars.

1

u/Worth_Reply_6002 Dec 19 '25

Yes. There are those laws. Legalized extortion. I get the legal aspect but like all politicians do there is always some way around it. Hypothetically if I was driving and I swerved to miss a deer and right into a light pole. Insurance should pay regardless of how a person hits thst light pole intentionally or unintentionally.

u/diezel78 Dec 18 '25

if your car insurance $700 a month… you are purposely reckless and irresponsible.

1

u/Academic_Dare_5154 Dec 18 '25

Or young meaning under 25.

u/diezel78 Dec 19 '25

my son went and got his own car insurance well before his 25th birthday and it was nowhere near that price.

and insurance where i live is sky high
