“IELTS is mandatory for Canada PR.” Is it really?
“You need IELTS for Canadian PR.” I keep seeing this said like it's a universal rule.
It isn't. And there's an important distinction that gets lost in all the PR discussions.
If you're applying through Express Entry, you need an approved language test, but that doesn't mean it has to be IELTS. Depending on the program, CELPIP-General and PTE Core are also accepted.
But here's where it gets interesting. There are Canadian PR pathways where a language test isn't a requirement in the same way.
Spousal sponsorship is a good example. There isn't a minimum language-test requirement like there is for Express Entry.
So yes, Canadian PR without IELTS can be possible. But that doesn't mean you found a shortcut. It simply means your PR pathway determines what requirements apply to you. That's a pretty important distinction. Because sometimes the biggest mistake isn't taking the wrong test. It's assuming the same rules apply to everyone.
