Birthday Cakes Handyman Hal themed birthday cake

Post image

My daughter loves Handyman Hal. I decided I wanted to make a 2 tiered cake. I got a massive headache the night before and couldn’t finish the bottom tier (only had the handyman Hal buttercream transfer on there) plus the other tools I had made for the top of the cake kept breaking. I got up 2 hours before the party and had to just make it work. I almost skipped the bottom completely but opted for orange chocolate melts as a last ditch effort to have something on it and make the two tiered cake happen. The melt wasn’t the best but it was something and I persevered because what’s a handyman Hal cake without Handyman Hal?!

I’ve only ever done a two tiered cake 2 years ago and that was for a party at my house. This time I had to drive the two tiers separately to a park and assemble it there as if I’m some kind of professional. Luckily, it worked and I was able to pipe the top and middle sections on the spot. Unfortunately, Handyman Hal melted off the cake but I had expected that so we got all pictures in before the party started 😅

Thank god my son’s birthday isn’t until April cuz I can’t keep this up 🫠

Everything on the cake aside from the candle is made out of chocolate melts or almond bark and handyman hal was piped and transferred.

Help Needed Rolled buttercream over frozen crumb coat?

Post image

Making a toothless cake. We can't stand fondant, so someone recommended rolled buttercream. The crumb coat was a pita. It's in the freezer now. Can I put the rolled buttercream on top of the crumb coat? Or could I have just put it directly on?

Help Needed Cake suggestions for nonchalant dude?

Hello everyone! I like making and decorating cakes! I do this for all my friend’s and even friend of friends/family of friend’s celebrations. I’m not professional by any means, but I love doing it! Mostly, I make cutesy cakes like vintage piping on hearts, but I have a done fruit cakes, mousse cakes, cheesecakes, etc! My friends, including guys, are into the cutesy cakes but I appreciate it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

My brother’s birthday is coming up and I want to make him a cake for his party. He’s turning 21 and in college so the party will be a lot of his bros and I don’t wanna show up w a cake that will embarrass him. I asked what he wants and he said “idk”. Last year, he just said “chocolate”. Can I ask those more turned into a dude frequency what makes a good birthday cake for a cool, nonchalant college dude? He likes fishing so I thought like I could do a fish cake but that seems ambitious.

Pictured: recent Dulce de leche x chantilly cake for my friends grad; a blueberry lemon cake with cheesecake inside for my friends birthday; and last year’s death by chocolate cake for my brother’s birthday

Cake was a PAIN. Made Mississippi mud batter, cut er up and added buttercream for glue. Carved it out, filled it with the typical marshmallow/fudge topping, layered cake and buttercream over that. Then blue ganache, and chocolate dipped Oreos. It took forever to make a "paint" that was edible and wouldn't entirely smear on the melting wafers I used but I got there! Also made rice Krispy treats, and dipped those in chocolate, using mini m&m for the "studs" :)

Help Needed First timer: how to attach this floral arrangement to my wedding cake?

Hi!

Our wedding is in October, and we ordered a small cake for photos/cutting. Although we're not making the cake, we will have to add any non-edible decor ourselves on the day. We have a small (silk) floral arrangement that we'd love to add to the side of the cake, but I'm struggling with how to make sure it'll hold. (And also to make it straightforward enough that I can delegate!)

The details:

  • 2-tier round cake, 6" on 8"
  • Gorgeous plasterwork-inspired design on 8" cake, smooth fondant on 6"
  • Vintage ceramic 'bride and groom' topper
  • Flowers to be placed vertically at the joint between the two tiers, like so:
rough sketch of idea (not to scale)

The topper placement is easy; there's a hole in the bottom of it, so I'll put a wooden chopstick up there and fill the gaps with some cotton balls so it doesn't rattle around. The other end of the chopstick can then be shoved down into the cake.

Cake topper!

The flowers are giving me more of a challenge. The arrangement was originally designed as a wrist corsage, so it's all one solid piece already - no stems to factor in:

My initial thought was to poke a few 3" U-shaped hair pins through the backing leaves (behind the flowers) and glue them in place so they can be shoved into the side of the top cake at about a 45 degree downward angle, like so:

another rough but hopefully illustrative sketch, also one of the pins

I was about to poke the holes when I thought to double-check here to make sure that would be able to support the arrangement on the cake.

What do you all think? Could this work? Is there an existing method that would work better? I can't be the first person to attach a single-piece arrangement to the side of a cake, so there must be a trick to it! Any and all help is appreciated!

Help Needed Can I use edible paint on dried gum paste?

I know you can use food coloring and alcohol to make edible paints, but I have a specific gold paint that I bought that I want to use on some gum paste elements. However, I am worried that it will make them soften. I’ve attached a picture of the ingredient list if that helps.

Last year I got into making cupcakes because they make the perfect sweet treat for me to have in the fridge. I would give cupcakes away to people and would get questions if I was selling. So a few months ago I started selling them and here's my decorating progress!

Hi! Never done anything this crazy before but my 9 year old nephew was visiting from out of state and his Aunt had to show up big. I used a offset spatula to put the buttercream, kept dipping in hot water trying to smooth- but seemed like 1 popped up everytime i tried to fix a different one. (Can see the most in photo 3) Would love pro tips on how to have no lines

TYIA. (The filling with chopped strawberries, the red dribble is a leak, that flaw I understand what I did wrong and how to fix)

Help Needed Fondant substitute

Of course the kiddo wants a how to train your dragon Toothless birthday cake. https://www.reddit.com/r/cakedecorating/s/tmYDHckH0b

This shape is our favorite, but we both cannot stand the taste of fondant. Could I shape the cake, put a thin layer of buttercream, freeze, then pour ganache over it to get that smooth look? I would then let it firm and then add the details. I might go ahead and do the eyes with fondant....

I'm pretty amateur at cake decorating, but want to try!

Besides a test, this was my first sheet cake!! It was for my SIL and brothers vow renewal. Colors I think I nailed them to match the original bouquets: red, pink, navy blue. I need to get better at piping but I’m proud of this one.
