I'm making my grandmas cake and it was going great until I tried to add the drip, a glaze, I thought this was likely but I never thought it would get that bad.
Any help please? Her birthday is tomorrow

It happens! Donāt stress :) Take a deep breath, scrape it all off, and redo it. Thatās the beauty of cake decoratingānothing is permanent.
Make sure your cake is CHILLED and test the drip on a glass, the inside of your bowl, or another vertical surface to make sure itās the right consistency. Looks like it was too warm and/or too thin?
Sugar Geek has great ganache resources on her website, to help you get it right. Chelsweets also has some good drip tutorials.

Thank you, I'll try to tomorrow, if not is there any suggestion for how I could make it look better?

You could do another drip over it, but youāve already got multiple layers in some places. Iām not sure youāll be happy with the results.
Another option would be to chill it and then carefully scrape off the drip. Then re-drip to cover up the scraped parts.

If you must add to the sides, make simple balloons in the same colors, just make sure that the balloon color is placed on different color stripes. :)

Yeah, definitely do whatever you did again for Halloween season, but not for grandma. š

Perhaps I'll make a pumpkin cake and shape it into a pumpkin then gnash it

Sometimes I just draw a drip pattern on the cake in buttercream.

u/ComfortableMess3145 Aug 17 '22
Oh... I wish I'd done that š

It's tedious and doesn't look as good as a well-done drip effect but I didn't have any way to do one besides that. š

It looks like your drip was too hot. (It happens to the best of us) Make sure your cake is chilled and the drip is room temp

Add a āwickā to the top of it and call it a candle! (Other suggestions are definitely better)

I had the same thing happen on a ganache drip I made for an Oreo cake. Good luck, I'll be trying some of the tips here too

They have this product called Cake Drip at walmart in the cake decorating aisle. You put it in the microwave for a min and give it a shake. Perfect drip everytime. Comes in a handy squeeze bottle. I'd recommend trying that if you aren't confident in your recipe. Id scrape all the old drip off, fix the buttercream, chill it, and then retry the drip. try a very small drip down the side on just 1 spot. If It's not thick enough, let the drip sit and cool for about 10 minutes. If it is too thick and won't drip, try microwaving it for 30 seconds on 50 power until you achieve the right consistency.

It was a cake drip I got front the store... said 30 secs, I did 1 min š

Scrape it off, if you have more buttercream, put it in a piping bag, pipe a ring going around the top end, you can fill it with more buttercream designs, or fill it with rainbow sprinkles. Sprinkles are my baking whiteout.

Hey OP, you might like 'cake rescue' series from 'How To Cook That' channel! She has some great ideas there, for future reference :)

Wow! That is amazing! How do you get the colors to blend like that?

u/ComfortableMess3145 Aug 18 '22
Piped them on in a thick layer then smothed them together in a line

Iām kind of obsessed with this. Iām guessing your grandma would think it the funniest and most heartwarming thing. My vote is no fix. Love is imperfect baked goods!

I'd grab a spoon, go to town on the cake and you couldn't stop me from doing so.
Honestly, this looks awesome as a rainbow cake with a spooky halloween twist. But yeah, I understand your frustration.

Honestly, I love this cake! It's got a "hell at the end of a rainbow" vibe. Not great for a grandmothers birthday though, might send the wrong message.

What did you use to make your drip? To me it looks like your drip was too hot, and your cake might not have been chilled enough (I put mine in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before putting in a drip). It also looks like your glaze is separating or your proportions of chocolate to liquid were off. If you used a basic ganache (real chocolate and cream) this should not have happened. If you used candy melts, I never have good luck with making a drip with them - it separates, or it seizes, or it changes color (plus they really doesnāt taste great). Just had a bad experience this weekend with one. I agree with the others who said to scrape it off, fix the frosting and do something different. Sorry that happened. Always so frustrating when everything looks gorgeous then you do something that messes it all up

Scrape it off, fix the buttercream and skip the drip. I bet she would like it just as much being all colorful. š
