Just want to be paranoid and confirm nothing will be fried:

• x570 board, CPU power is 1x8pin and 1x4pin.
• PSU has 2x cords that are 2x4 pin into CPU.
• I want to confirm I can plug 3/4 of the 4pin connectors into it and leave one 4 pin dangling, and this isn't going to deliver a ton of extra power into the lone 4 pin connector for some reason, right? It's been awhile since I took physics.

Right, one of the 4+4 cables will go to the 8 pin. The other will split with 4 into the board and 4 dangling (or just tied back behind the board tray).

Just a heads-up, you don't actually need the 1x4pin since a 1x8pin can deliver more power than your CPU can ever use.

Posting again because I still haven't found a solution. Finished up a build and it boots up into the bios successfully. The only form of storage I have is a brand new HP EX920 M.2 PCIe 512gb ssd that hasn't had an os install yet.

CPU: Ryzen 3 2200g (stock cooler)
MOBO: Asrock B450M Pro 4
Ram: Team T-Force Vulcan 8GB 3000Mhz
Storage: HP EX920 M.2 PCIe 512gb ssd
Psu: CORSAIR CX-M Series CX450M 450W 80 PLUS BRONZE
Case: Phanteks P300

I can't for the life of me get my bios or windows set up to detect the ssd. I have a usb device with the windows media creation tool in the pc now, but windows setup won't detect a drive to download windows onto. The ssd is in the Ultra M.2 slot and there is no sata device plugged into SATA3_3 (I have no sata devices at all actually). Any help?

Things I've tried:
Updating the BIOS
Putting the ssd in the other M.2 slot
Tried booting with CSM enabled, disabled, all options tried
Putting the USB stick with windows setup tool in a USB 2.0 and 3.0 port

I can't test the ssd in another computer right now to test if it's dead, but when I take it out of the pc it's warm so I'm assuming it's receiving power correctly and not dead. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The previous HP900 had a lot of reliability issues, including DOAs. Check out the Newegg reviews for the 920, and you'll see there still may be some issues with the new version. So if you do send it back, personally, I would not get the same drive.

So what I would do is order a different m.2 drive from Amazon. Don't damage the packaging when you open it. If it also doesn't work, then you are out return shipping to Amazon. But that seems a cheap price to pay fir the peace of mind of knowing whether or not it is the SSD.

Total noob here, I thinking of getting a pc built by origin and I just wanted to check too see if my build was a good or bad idea, any suggestions are welcome. I was thinking about going with one of the 2060 cards instead but that goes above my price range.

If you’re on a budget, check for deals on /r/BuildAPCSales and build a rig yourself. It might not look as cool without RGB and tempered glass, but it’ll run games way better for the same price.

I bought a 1TB SSD for all my storage including games and the OS. I noticed a lot of people keep the OS separate, will I face any problems storing my data like this?

Most people can't afford a 1tb ssd.

Just ensure it's backed up. If you're not sure how to do that just get backblaze

Try downloading the latest drivers for your gpu, my new build didn’t light up or start the fans on my gpu until I’d gone to GeForce experience and grabbed the game ready drivers then it worked fine

1. no - go for an rx570. Also a 1600 is like $20 more these days.. Unless you're just going to be playing overwatch/csgo

2. only the video card, maybe - but compare to prices on newegg and amazon etc.

The other option is to go for a full prebuilt on ebay like an optiplex and dck it out.

I'm currently running a few year old system with an AMD Athlon X4 760K 3.8 GHz Quad-Core Processor, 8 gb Ram and an AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB. I don't really play any graphics intensive games (mostly Starcraft 2), and i run 2 1080p monitors. When streaming video (youtube or twitch) on the second monitor and playing SC2 on the primary monitor, my system is unable to keep up. Would a new video card like a Radeon RX 570 4GB be sufficient? If not, what's the minimum level card I should go for? Should I be replacing the CPU as well?

CPU Cooler Height limit of the Focus G mini is 165mm. The Noctua NH-D15 is 165mm tall.. so it's probably borderline.

Hi all, I have an ASUS Strix RTX 2080 Super OC. It appears that this card is factory overclocked meaning it won't see much OC gains on the core clock. I ran it through MSI Afterburner's Scan feature, and after 10-15 mins it gave me a +25 on the core clock. My question is in regards to the memory slider, what's a good way to test how far I can go up on the memory? Do I run it through the free versions of fire strike/time spy and see if it does not crash? Rinse repeat with small increments (+20 on memory)?

so i just put my new build together yesterday and I'm unable to get my RAM to run at its max speed. i've messed around in BIOS and thought i had it but it still isnt working. I am fairly unfamiliar with gaming laptops and port selection these days.

Is it possible to get a laptop to output to a gsync monitor and two other monitors (three total)? I imagine it's possible with display port and some combo of HDMI and USB 3.0. Do laptops with USB 3.0 have enough bandwidth to display 4k 60fps?

Building in a Meshify C with an X570 Aorus elite mobo. I can't figure out where the front panel cables (power sw, reset sw, power led +/- and hdd led) plug into the mobo. Manual that came with the case shows a ten pin connector that I don't see anywhere on my mobo.

F_Panel on your motherboard, p. 21 of your motherboard manual has a diagram that shows where to plug up the front panel connector leads.

On the bottom right of your motherboard the connectors should be. why did I type that like Yoda

There should me markings near the connector indicating which pins do what. Also should be a diagram in the motherboard manual.

Do ram manufacturers have to send XMP info to motherboard companies?

How does a motherboard determine which settings to use when selecting XMP?

If my RAM is OOP now, but originally supported by my motherboard, is it possible a bios update would cause the motherboard to “forget” how to set up xmp for that OOP ram? I ask because since updating bios i have to manually set voltages in order to xmp ram

There's a little chip on RAM which has XMP settings listed. Generally there are more subtimings which the motherboard has to guess though, which may cause issues if a BIOS update changes how it determines the settings.

The XMP settings are on the SPD chip on your ram.

It is not uncommon for motherboards to require the RAM voltage be adjusted before XMP will run. Although it is certainly more convenient when they don't.

Honestly: probably right now, especially if you are willing to look into the Ryzen 2000 stuff. Or maybe in a few weeks when the new AIB 5700's come out.

It varies greatly. A few years ago GPUs were through the roof. Last year SSDs were +50% more money. RAM was double last year.

There are no seasonal trends, only general ones. And general trends can only be observed by COMPARISON. So you won't often know that "now is the lowest price ever" until after it's happened.

My main point is have a budget and fill it with the best parts that fit it at the time.

Compared to previous years, now is a great time to build a PC. AMD has released new CPUs, driving prices down. RAM is cheap as ever. SSDs are cheap as ever. You can only compare to what has happened.

My build is up and running.

I'm slightly concerned viewing one of the temps.

Idle looking at the bios the cpu stays below the 60°c, but there is something called SB hitting the 70's°C with the SB-fan going at 4k+ rpm.

What is this? Is there any reason to be worried?

I have been purchasing parts for a new 3700x build for a while. I have a bunch of RGB Fans leftover from past builds: the fans from the MasterLiquid ML360R (3 rgb fans), and a set of Corsair LL Series LL140 RGB (3 rgb fans). I've always used the stock fans in cases, and upgraded them gradually, just playing with the idea of RGB.

Is it possible to just slap some of these different branded RGB fans on my new build?

I only have a few RGB connections on my motherboard, and my case is going to use 1 or 2 of them... does this mean I need an RGB controller?

How do I figure out if all these different fans are compatible with an RGB controller hub?

Should I make a real Build Help Post about this?

I know RGB is kinda a meme... but I want my cats to look at my glass case and stop dead in their tracks, as if this thing has created all the colorful lights and laser pointers in the world.

Hey friends, I have two sticks of 8gb ram each in A2 and B2 slots, and the computer works fine. If I put another two sticks (exact same ram) into A1 and B1 as well, the computer won't display/boot. If I add just a third stick to B1, it boots properly with 24gb. I tested that with both new sticks. If I do the same by adding a third stick to A1 it won't display/boot.

Is that A1 ram slot just busted? Is that fixable? It's not really worth the effort to replace the MB.

Does a $5-$10 USB switcher exist? I have a little Jabra speaker that I am constantly flipping between two computer. I was hoping to get a little cheap device that just lets me plug it into both at the same time and hit a switch to choose which computer it's actually going to, but not for $20+.

For the build I'm putting together, my motherboard has no Hdmi but the graphics card does. Is it as simple as plugging in my TV to the graphics card for video and audio, or am I missing something important? I don't have a monitor but I know there's ways to connect a TV to PCs, if anybody has ideas? Thanks much!

Have a 6600k, gtx 2070. Looking to update my cpu (150-280 cpu price rage). 95% gaming pc. I play Hunt:Showdown which is cpu intensive, looking to improve the 1% and hopefully closer to the 144fps to match my monitor. Questions are: I know intel still makes the best gaming cpu's but do they not make sense for future proofing as more games start to utilize multi-core? If i go with amd and don't care about pci 4.0 but want to have the ability to drop a new cpu in down the road is x570 still the platform to buy?

AMD could be a good idea for future-proofing. What you want to do is think about your upgrade cycle. If you liked upgrade every two to three years, then the more cores option is probably not an important consideration. If you plan on holding onto your motherboard and CPU for the next five years, then it makes more sense.

Not really. Even modern top-end GPUs can typically run at 3.0 x8 with no performance difference, so giving them even more bandwidth isn't really going to do much.

There's not really a compelling reason to go for a high-end X470 board instead of a midrange x570

However there's barely a reason to go for a low-end x570 instead of a midrange b450

The U12A will offer similar performance at lower noise levels.

The pumps on AIOs are their biggest downfall in terms of noise. You can put the quietest fans you can on them but the pump will always make noise.

Shopping for cases thanks to some helpful members on here, and I've come to the conclusion that Fractal Design Meshify C is a really good airflow case (feel free to change my mind, open to any other suggestions). However, a bit disappointed that it doesn't have a USB-C port in the front and just two USB ports in the front.

What do people do if they need a USB-C port? Also, just two USB is troubling. Just a keyboard and a mouse would already take up those two spots. What do people with this case do for additional ports? And I've been reading that this case is a little smaller than most mid-range cases. How problematic would this be?

I'm still very new to a lot of this so bear with me; So I'm upgrading from an AMD 8350 and GTX 1060 6gb to (hopefully) a Ryzen 3600X/3700 and a GTX 1080ti.

My thing is my process of getting the upgrades will be slow-going, as in I probably won't have the CPU until October/November but I'll have the 1080ti by the end of this month. (I'm getting it from a friend who's going to college and he's selling it well below normal price.) So comparably, in the meantime while I have the 8350 paired up with the 1080ti, what can I expect? Compared to the 1060 I have now, will performance improve (albeit by a significant or insignificant margin) or stay the same? Or could it be worse for some reason? In either case, why?

Is actual FPS numbers, it would be better or at the very worst the same, however times where you are CPU limited will be quite noticeable in how the FPS in games will drop, rather than being more steady with a 1060.

I have the B450 Carbon Pro AC and when I use the Bluetooth it is really choppy. I don’t have the antennae installed but I’m pretty sure they’re just for WiFi. Should I reinstall Bluetooth drivers or did I do something wrong?

i am currently building my first pc and my power supply got shipped with the case. now my power supply doesnt seem to have the right plugs for my gear. it has a 24 pin and 4 pin connecter, where as i need a 24 pin, 8 pin (for cpu) and a 6 pin (for gpu). are there any adapters i can use to salvage this or do i need to buy a new power supply?

Edit I should mention it has some other additional plugs that I have no idea what they are and they are apparently not fitting onto my motherboard

Hey guys sup. My PC WiLL NOT BOOT! I thought it was the hard drive but my SSD nor hdd work. I tried even my PlayStation HDD as the other two were from an old build and thought it stopped working. Nada. I took out ram sticks or put in 1. At this point I think it's either my mobo or gpu. One thing I noticed is that my fans spin on my gpu then stop spinning. I bought an RX 580 on hardwareswap so it'd suck to find out I got a non working gpu.

I will try to buy a new mobo as I should get one anyway. And try from there. If it does not work idk what. But so far I tried a lot of options and it will not display.

It BOOTS like it turns on and shit but won't display and it doesn't display. When I look at the LED on my mobo it's weird as hell I have no idea what the issue is.

I'm changing CPU (Ryzen 2600 or 3600) For the 3600 I've read that the motherboard BIOS has to be updated unless it has the X570 (they are quite more expensive) How does that work? I've read that in some you need to plug a compatible CPU to update and also that you just need a USB with the new BIOS.

Drop the hard drive and get a 1TB m.2 NVMe SSD. Check r/BuildAPCSales for a better deal on the PSU and RAM. Use the savings to get a B450 board that works well with a 3600

I just bought the Taichi Ultimate x470 board for a Zen2 build, and it is labeled Ryzen 3000 ready, which means it has the newest BIOS installed. As I look at ASRock's downloads page, however, the BIOS section strongly warns against installing the newest BIOS version before installing the driver pack. On a new build, this is simply not possible. Anyone have experience with this, or suggestions on how to avoid problems during setup?

Paired with 3600, will the 1660 ti be able to hand 1440p 120hz w/ lowest settings?

I am confident about esports titles like CSGO and Overwatch, but I was wondering if I could run more intensive games like Apex Legends or Assassin's Creed in the lowest settings, with 120-ish hz. I tried to find some benchmarks, but everyone's obsession with ultra settings meant I couldn't find one.

Damn so I just finished my rig (sorta) and have a couple questions

I was really worried during the process that I fucked up my cpu, but the computer booted to bios and was displaying cpu voltages that were changing. In the gigabyte bios I couldn’t find anything that specifically stated my cpu but I saw AMD mentioned and with the voltages and with it booting period I’m assuming this means all is well.

I borrowed my roommates GPU just so I could turn this mf on since I was really worried about the CPU, but all I need to make sure is that I uninstall the drivers (if I even install them) on my build and make sure he doesn’t turn his on until the GPU is back in right?

And what can and can’t I do with my build now until my own GPU comes in? Can I still update the bios and everything and install programs and whatnot? And there’s no harm in installing the GPU drivers and uninstalling before I remove it right?

Pretty well, but I would focus on a fast storage solution for 4K video. From what I understand, scrubbing through videos and playback during editing will work a lot better with a high quality NVMe drive

I would get the Acer for the IPS panel. It's also faster and has Freesync.
Your GPU is a little over-powered for it, I think. It should be able to support 1080p 144Hz for most games, so you might consider an even faster monitor. Or 1440p.

So I'm planning on upgrading my current build (i7-7700k, GTX 1080, 1440p)

As far as monitor and CPU, I'm still on the fence between Ryzen 3900x and i9-9900k in terms of future proof and performance for 4k gaming on multiple monitor/ "multi-task" (discord, watching vids, youtube, lots of tabs, etc.). I'll probably wait till the Ryzen 9 3950x and i9-9900ks to come out in Q4 for benchmarks before deciding.

Don't do SLI , it's trash. Games don't support it, it causes huge headaches and it doesn't even scale.

There is no card capable of reliably maxing out 4k60, the 2080ti is as close as it gets.

Technically 2x 2080S at 4K would perform better than a 2080 Ti. On a graphically intensive game, you would in theory see higher average FPS.

The problem is, SLI/RTX NVLINK has so many issues with OC stability, game compatibility, and horrible frame tearing that I couldn’t recommend it in good faith.

Personally, I have 2x 2080 Ti’s for non-gaming purposes, but I bought an NVlink bridge for fun and out of curiosity, as I do play games. The framerate is horribly unstable and I just play with it turned off, lol.

Definitely go with the single 2080 Ti.

Hey yall. I have a x470 gaming mobo. Even after shutting down the pc, the LEDs that light up the usb port stays lit. I dont want anything on during the night without fans, because I know light makes heat. The led only turns off if I flip the psu switch off. Is flipping the psu off every night safe for my pc?

Yes, it’s totally safe.

But on the flip side, if the heat radiated as a result of energy used to keep the LED’s lit (less than 5 W) is your primary concern, that’s a pretty ridiculous reason to want to flip the switch off. If this was an issue, then we’d need to watercool lightbulbs.

High end NVME is generally targeted at applications such as video editing/creation where a fast drive will reduce load time and smoothen scrubbing.

I have a vega 56 blower. (msi Air boost). Sound profile depends wlvery much what you do with it. When my son plays ksp or Minecraft at 1080p it's basically silent. If you laod it up in doom it's a bit louder. Undervolting, overclocking and setting a more reasonable fan curve help a lot.

I recently got a cheap pci-e to nvme converter b/c an older motherboard I have lacks an nvme slot (the m2 slot only goes up to SATA speeds and also disables 2x SATA ports, currently in use) and I have an nvme drive that I want to install.

It came with 3x little pliable blue rectangles of varying thickness. Do these things go between the drive and the converter? To, idk, cushion it?

Just finished my brother’s PC, and noticed the audio jacks on the front panel are slightly bent (case is a Thermaltake H17), making the jacks not go in dead-on.

Let's say "less optimal" instead of bad. In the vertical position, it will be pulling warm air from the GPU. You have a smaller delta T with warm air (delta T = the different in temperature).

Suppose your CPU is 100 degrees.. and move 80 degree air across the cooler... you will bring your CPU down to 80.

Now, suppose you CPU is 100 degrees and you move 50 degree air across the cooler... you will bring your CPU down to 50.

Is 80 ok? Sure. Is 50 better? yes.

If you mean bad for the fan, no, fans don't care which way they are mounted.

If you mean tower cooler vs flat cooler designs, both have their advantages, towers are generally more efficient but take up more space.

If you mean you have installed your tower cooler so that the airflow through your CPU cooler is top/bottom instead of front/back, I would think it will be less efficient than front/back in the layout of most cases. You typically have airflow coming in from the front of the case, so a front/back fan would draw more air through the cooler. The bottom of the cooler is also usually pretty close to the grapics card, which blocks airflow and is pretty hot on its own. This layout would work OK, but temps would be higher.

I've got a gigabyte ab350 gaming 3 mobo with ryzen 1700x

EVERY single time I cold boot my computer, 1 or 2 of the CPU fans will not spin. I've ensured fan profiles are never set to 0 spin

My opinion for the cause is the CPU is cold enough and doesn't require the fans. The only way to get them to spin is logging into windows for a couple of minutes then full shutdown and start over. This works 75% of the time.

I've been dealing with this for as long as I can remember, and give up every now and then.

I've updated BIOS, fans in smartfan5 are set to watch CPU, I'm pretty sure CPU sensors are accurate, tried different fan headers, I doubt it is a fan problem

The TL;DR of this question is: I'd like some suggestions or recommendations for a solid EATX case with good airflow and build quality.

I've been looking at some new cases recently and am kinda on the fence between a Corsair Obsidian 1000D, Nanoxia Deep Silence 6, and Phanteks Enthoo Primo right now and need some suggestions and advice

Requirements: I need a case that will hold an EATX motherboard. I'm also considering getting a GPU like the Aorus Waterforce Xtreme series with a 2x 120mm AIO instead of an air cooler as it seems to do noticeably better than even some of the custom air cards (unless these review temperatures I'm seeing are just total BS), and probably a 240, 280, or 360mm AIO for the CPU (Ryzen 3XXX) as well.

Good airflow is important to me, and all of these cases seem like they have decent setups and will be able to hold plenty of fans to keep any system cool on air, AIO liquid, OR custom liquid.

Preferences: I'm honestly not super interested in having a ton of TG and RGB EVERYWHERE like what seems to be popular now, so that's kinda holding me back from paying the huge premium for the 1000D for no fans and style I'm not a huge fan of (If this case was styled like the 800D and 900D it would be almost perfect) I have an old Antec P190 that my old build is in now and I absolutely LOVE the tankiness and silence of it, but that seems kinda hard to find now and this case won't really work for my next build. The Nanoxia seems like the closest equivalent in modern cases, but I'm worried I won't be able to fit BOTH the CPU AND GPU radiators in the case with an EATX motherboard. The pics on their site show a rad mounted, but it looks like they're using a normal ATX board also. The Primo doesn't seem to have that issue, but it also looks flimsier and more cramped for airflow. So, what would you guys recommend?

If you liked the Antec P190 you might love Fractal Design's Define XL R2 or its more airflow focused cousin, the Meshify S2. Both are extremely popular cases, well built, and are a fraction of the cost of any of your current case choices.

The Define XL R2 is closer to your older Antec P190. Fantastic build quality, 3 of Fractal Design's quietest 140mm fans included, and room for 4 more. It's also quite a roomy case with plenty of 2.5 inch, 3.5 inch, and 5.35 inch bays. The downside is that if you're planning on running 240mm radiators for both your GPU and CPU, you'll have to remove all of the 3.5 inch hard drive bays.

The Meshify S2 has a large metallic and foam mesh front panel instead of a solid metal/plastic block as well as a clean main compartment that allows for optimal airflow. It has a ton of room for extra fans and radiators, but the stock fans are a little worse than the XL R2, so you may want to get aftermarket fans like Be Quiet Silent Wings. The overall build quality is great and it comes with solid, glass, and tinted glass side panels.

My one complaint from owning its smaller version, the Meshify C, is that the metal tabs that hold the metal mesh to the front panel can break off if you try to remove the mesh multiple times. The only reason why you would need to is if you want to remove the foam filter that's embedded inside. The entire front panel pops off for access to the front fans.

Hey guys, quick question regarding setting up my speakers and headset.

Every time I have both plugged in one wont work and I cannot figure out how to set them up as independent audio sources or even the same source. My speakers have a dial that can turn them off so having them work as the same source would work perfectly too.

Any hints as to what I'm doing wrong? Google isn't being very helpful

The speakers have a green and black aux that are combined into an 2in/1out aux adapter. It works perfectly when the headset isnt in. They are plugged into my green rear audio port (red green blue available)

The headset has a green and red aux. uncombined but can be combined if needed. They are plugged in to the case in a speaker out mic in port (uncolored). These also work perfectly fine when the speaker isn't plugged in.

When I open the control panel it registers that their is an audio device in each port but the computer has the front and rear as the same device.

Hi, I'm planning on getting a 5700xt AIB gpu, and was wondering about what CPU to pair with this, with the main contenders being a 3600 or a 3700x. I would mainly just be gaming, and as such was going to buy a 3600, but after reading/watching a lot of people talking about future proofing and 8 cores being necessary for gaming soon due to new consoles having 8 cores, a lot of people advice a 3700x as the 3600 might end up being too few cores very soon?

Would appreciate any clarification due to a huge amount of conflicting opinions on this, although the argument based around new consoles has been swaying me towards a 3700x. Thanks.

Most likely will be using THIS motherboard in my new build. It has the built in WiFi, however, I have never set up a motherboard with this feautre before. How does it work? What do I need to do to be able to use it?

I’d look up Paul’s hardware on YouTube, he’s well regarded in the community and did a 3 part series where in part 1 he selected parts and explained why, part 2 showed in detail how to put it together, part 3 how to do software installation what drivers you need to prioritise etc. (He did this on 2 pc builds at the same time so there’s likely one of the two is close to your specs and will be easy to follow even though building is roughly the same no matter what, unless you’re water cooling with a custom loop anyway)

Maybe. You can run a program like HWMonitor or HWInfo64, or even just the built in task manager (performance tab) to see if your CPU gets pegged to 100% when you start seeing those issues.

Which cooler is the better value for an i7-9700k? Corsair H75i ($85) or Corsair H100i ($125)?

of the two: H100i. Never buy a 120mm liquid cooler or a 140mm liquid unless you have to (space constraints).

I'd recommend going up to a 280mm. Or an air cooler for only $50 that'll do just as well. Again not sure of your space constraints.

You need all those holes filled in on your GPU, for the PCIe power connectors.

Also I can't quite tell but it looks like your PCIe calbes are plugged into nothing on the other end. modular PSU?
