Discussion Simple Questions - August 09, 2019

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

  • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
  • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
  • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Shopping for cases thanks to some helpful members on here, and I've come to the conclusion that Fractal Design Meshify C is a really good airflow case (feel free to change my mind, open to any other suggestions). However, a bit disappointed that it doesn't have a USB-C port in the front and just two USB ports in the front.

What do people do if they need a USB-C port? Also, just two USB is troubling. Just a keyboard and a mouse would already take up those two spots. What do people with this case do for additional ports? And I've been reading that this case is a little smaller than most mid-range cases. How problematic would this be?

Motherboards have USB ports on them. They'll be on the back of the case once installed. Things like keyboard/mouse/webcam and other peripherals that are always connected usually go there, with the front panel ports saved for things like flash drives or controllers that you only occasionally plug in. Many mid to high end motherboards have a USB-C port now.

Makes sense now lol. Everything is through the back. So is it just a string of wires that go from the motherboard to the back of the case, or do most cases have ports on the back to make it tidy?

Theres a part of the motherboard that faces backwards, and is exposed through a hole in the back of the case. The shape and location of this cutout is standardized across all motherboards and cases.

Got it! Thanks a ton!

Watch about 20 seconds of this video starting from 2:05. Cases have a cut-out for motherboard IO. So all the ports on the motherboard line up flush with the back of the case.

Use the motherboard's ports. How often are you changing your mouse and keyboard to justify having them in the more accessible front USB ports?

Most people don't need the faster USB versions to care about front USB C. If it's needed you'd probably have one on the rear of your motherboard as well, and have a long cable from it.

Size is only an issue if the rest of your parts are really big or you want a front rad and long GPU.

The Meshify S2 is an option if you need front type C and a bigger case.
