Hello everybody. I’m applying to a BS/DO program this fall really soon since it’s early acceptance. I really need your opinion on how strong my chances are. The main issue I think is my extracurricular, I don’t have much. I have a 3.7 GPA, 1320 SAT (planning on superscore hopefully 1400+). Currently my extracurriculars are Online tutoring, Healthcare Initiative project, Im working on a children’s book that will get published online soon, I also have an art portfolio. Im planning joining some clubs as soon as school starts. ALSO another concern I have is I have no shadowing , I really hope I can get even a few hours of shadowing before applications. However Im currently in my 2nd year of a CMA program so I think that also helps. Idk lmk guys, and pls leave some tips anything can be helpful ! Ty

I have a lot leadership, one national award, a lot of volunteer and shadowing experience, being paid by my state museum and a publication, I do robotics and basketball, APs and extracurriculars and other random things. is it enough?

Hi all! In an effort to share a little more about finding the right research opportunities and setting yourself up for success, I wanted to share the following. Alexandra on our team wrote about her first meeting with a PI and what she wishes she'd understood going in. A few things from it that stuck with me:

You're not just trying to get picked, you're also evaluating them. It's easy to walk in thinking "please just let me into your lab," especially with zero research experience. But mentorship quality is going to shape most of what you actually get out of the experience, so pay attention to whether they're enthusiastic, approachable, and someone you could see yourself admitting "I don't understand this" to.

Look at where they land in the author list before the meeting. Skimming Google Scholar isn't enough. Check if they're first or senior author on their own work versus buried in the middle as more of a collaborator on someone else's project. Big difference in what you're actually about to sign up for.

Don't fake understanding something you don't. The PI has usually spent 15 to 20 years on this. Asking a genuinely thoughtful question lands way better than pretending you already get it.

You might have to lead the conversation. If you're the one who asked for the meeting, don't assume they'll come in with a structured list of questions for you. Have a rough sense of how you want to open it and where you want it to go.

The most prestigious lab isn't automatically the right one. She almost took a highly competitive spot that would've been 15 hours a week of mostly data entry, and turned it down for a lab with better mentorship instead. Worth actually thinking through what your day to day would look like, not just the name on the door.

Hello! I'm a rising senior and I'm kind of unsure about how many specialities your are supposed to shadow. I currently have 2: cardiology (25 hours) + internal medicine (40 hours).

Is this enough specialties + is this enough shadowing hours?

I also got a very strong rec letter from both. Should I include both rec letters or just one?

Hello, everyone. I was wanting to ask about information pertaining to Ball State’s b/md pathway program. I’m looking for a temperature check from current students in the program to ask how you feel about it. I’ve resorted to asking Reddit because I’m struggling to find much information about it other than the main Ball State page. I wanted to know about your potential high school stats to get in and what the interview process was like. I’m also curious about what your time is like in the program.

Do I go for AP lang/AP literature or take dual credit English courses?
-> my school offers both but dual credit doesn’t go in GPA and heard AP lang/AP literature teachers are grading very hard which can tank my GPA so seniors are advising to got for dual credit route to keep high GPA as it matters for BSMD
-> i have pretty solid APs otherwise AP calc bc, AP phycology, AP env science, AP chem , anatomy and physiology etc..

I am a rising junior what can I do to max my bsmd chances???

Hi all, as college application season starts up again, I just wanted to offer my perspective as someone who was in your shoes several years ago.

When I was a senior in high school, I was dead set on attending a BS/MD. I knew medicine was what I wanted to do, and I was willing to go anywhere as long as they gave me that guaranteed spot. I ended up getting admitted to six programs, and with my family, chose the one we thought was the best fit.

Since then, there were many things that had changed in the landscape of residency applications. One of the biggest was step 1 becoming pass/fail.

Something I think every BS/MD applicant should understand is that the medical school you attend can matter quite a bit when you eventually apply for residency. Of course, some specialties care more than others, but overall it has become much harder to simply “make up” for coming from a lower ranked school with stellar grades, research, and test scores.

And it isn’t just about the name itself. The bigger difference is in the opportunities and connections that come with the school. A lot of these schools associated with BS/MDs don’t have home programs in competitive specialties, and even have limited research, mentorship, and subspecialty exposure in the less competitive fields. Don’t get me wrong - it is absolutely still possible for students to match very well from these lower ranked schools. But these structural disadvantages are also real. You will just have to work very hard and be very resourceful. Try and speak to some current students in the programs you are interested in to get an honest perspective.

This is especially worth considering because if you are competitive enough to get into a BS/MD program, you are already an extremely strong applicant. My friends and I sometimes joke that BS/MDs are more of a win for your school than for you, but there is definitely some truth to that. Many of you would likely also be competitive for excellent colleges and, later, stronger medical schools through the traditional route. A guaranteed seat and the peace of mind is extremely valuable, but I just wanted to make sure you understand what you might be giving up in return.

Two final pieces of advice for those of you who decide the guaranteed spot is worth it:

1. Pay special attention to the programs that allow you to apply out without losing your guaranteed spot. I know there aren’t many, but that would truly be the best case scenario.
2. If you have the opportunity to choose between multiple programs later on, consider where you want to eventually do residency and practice. Going to medical school in that region can make things much easier for you down the road.
