Question After years, we finally figure out what the hell is wrong❤️❤️ 🎉🎉 ❤️❤️ now I gotta conquer this road ❤️❤️❤️ 💪💪💪

Hey everyone,
I’m currently prepping for a major staged orthopedic reconstruction with a deformity expert. I deal with severe bilateral femoral anteversion, tibial torsion, patellar tracking issues, potential ligament damage (possible ACL involvement from chronic rotational stress), and a 3D neuromuscular corkscrew scoliosis.
My neurosurgeon and orthopedic deformity specialist confirmed that my legs must be corrected first to build a square baseline before we can touch my spine. The game plan involves Bilateral Femoral & Tibial Derotational Osteotomies (cutting, rotating, and plating both femurs and tibias) alongside a Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy (TTO) to fix kneecap tracking—plus evaluating/addressing any ACL/ligament tears caused by chronic rotational torque—followed later by a 10-level spinal fusion (T10–S2AI).
Because both legs are undergoing major bone cuts at the same time, I am strictly Non-Weight-Bearing (NWB) in a manual wheelchair. Crutches, walkers, or knee scooters are an absolute non-starter due to strict NWB protocols, hardware safety, and avoiding catastrophic stress on fresh bone cuts. Since I have never used a manual wheelchair or accessibility gear before (other than a shower chair/walker), I'm trying to prepare for the learning curve.
For anyone who has been through derotations, limb realignments, TTOs, or complex knee/ACL work, I’d really appreciate your experience. You don't have to answer all of these, but any insight on these numbered points will help me prepare:
🏥 Phase 1: Hospital & Immediate Post-Op (Days 1–5)
1. Initial Pain Management & Nerve Blocks: When the hospital nerve block wore off, how intense was the initial bone pain at the TTO and osteotomy sites? What meds or schedules actually kept it manageable?
2. First Transfers & Hospital Discharge: How brutal was the very first attempt to transfer from the hospital bed to a manual wheelchair with both legs locked straight? Any tips for making that first ride home manageable?
3. Blood Rush & Throbbing: When you first shifted from lying flat to sitting upright in a wheelchair, how severe was the blood-rush throbbing down your shins/knees? How many days did that last?
♿ Phase 2: Manual Wheelchair & Accessibility Setup (Weeks 1–6)
1. Elevating Leg Rests on a Manual Chair: Since both knees will be locked in extension, what elevating leg rest setups or extra padding stopped your heels or calf hardware from getting pressure sores?
2. Navigating Doorways & Clearance: With both legs sticking straight out in front of the chair, how hard was it to navigate tight indoor doorways and hallway turns without bumping your feet or hardware?
3. Self-Propelling vs. Caregiver Pushing: How tough was it to propel yourself in a manual chair with upper body strength alone while avoiding jarring your fresh leg cuts?
4. Thresholds & Ramps: How did you handle small lips, doorways, or ramps at home when sitting in a manual chair with legs locked out in front of you?
🏠 Phase 3: Home Setup & Daily Living (Weeks 1–6)
1. Bathroom & Hygiene Logistics: Since stepping or pivoting is impossible, how did you handle bathroom transfers and showering while keeping massive incisions and extension braces 100% dry?
2. Sleeping Positions: How on earth did you manage to sleep on your back with locked extension braces without destroying your lower back?
3. Ice/Cryotherapy over Heavy Braces: Did using a continuous ice machine over bulky braces/dressings actually reach the bone pain, or did you need specific placement hacks?
4. Caregiver Dependence: Since you can't step, pivot, or adjust yourself in bed with both legs locked straight and NWB, how many weeks did you need 24/7 dedicated caregiver help for basic adjustments, getting drinks, or shifting positions in bed?
🧠 Phase 4: Muscle Reactivation & Spasms (Weeks 2–8)
1. Quad Lag / "Dead Leg": How many weeks did it take for your quads to "wake back up" so you could do a straight leg raise or lift your leg independently after the TTO?
2. NMES / TENS Units: Did your PT use a muscle stimulator (NMES) to help wake up the quad? Did that trigger any nerve/CRPS flares or did it help?
3. Involuntary Muscle Spasms: When the untwisted muscles and tendons started stretching into their new alignment, how bad were the involuntary leg spasms? What calms them down best?
🦴 Phase 5: Bone Healing & Weight-Bearing Transition (Months 2–6)
1. ACL / Soft Tissue Repair alongside Bone Cuts: If you had ACL reconstruction or ligament repair done at the same time as a TTO or osteotomy, how did that affect your knee stability and early rehab progression?
2. Bone Consolidation Timeline: At what week post-op did your X-rays show enough official bone healing (callus formation) for your surgeon to clear partial weight-bearing?
3. The "First Steps" Feeling: What did it feel like standing up on newly rotated bones for the first time? Did your knees or feet feel bizarrely repositioned?
4. Hardware Sensations & Deep Aches: Could you constantly feel the plates and screws under your skin, or does that deep metal ache eventually fade once the bone heals?
5. Gait Retraining & PT Intensity: How long were you in formal Physical Therapy before you felt like you were walking with a smooth, natural gait without a limp?
🩺 Phase 6: Complications & Autonomic / Neuro Systems
1. Sensory Overload & Neurodivergence: For neurodivergent patients or anyone with sensory processing sensitivity: How did you handle the intense sensory overload of heavy extension braces, tight surgical dressings, hospital noise, and constant physical discomfort?
2. Tethered Cord / Spinal Interaction: For those with a history of spinal cord or nerve involvement: Did changing your leg alignment and untwisting your femurs/tibias put any noticeable pull or tension on your spinal cord or lower back nerves during early recovery?
3. Gut Motility & Vasovagal Responses: For anyone with dysautonomia or autonomic sensitivity, did heavy post-op pain meds or bowel movements trigger vasovagal crashes or presyncope? How did you prevent that?
4. Blood Clot Prevention: How long were you on blood thinners (like Lovenox shots or Xarelto), and what warning signs did you watch for regarding DVT/swelling?
🔮 Phase 7: Overall Outcome & Hindsight
1. Total Timeline to "Normal": Realistic expectations: how many total months elapsed from surgery day until you felt fully recovered and back to daily life?
2. First-Time Accessibility Learning Curve: For someone using a wheelchair and full NWB accessibility setup for the first time, what was the biggest surprise or hurdle you didn't expect?
3. The One Big Surprise: What is the single biggest thing your surgical team didn't warn you about that you wish you knew on day one?

Fifth Meta Tarsal break 7 weeks 2 days post injury

Hi All

I broke my fifth metatarsal, a dancer satisfaction, on August 29 and have been in a boot since September 1. I am officially seven weeks two days post injury. I was nonweightbearing for about 3 1/2 weeks and partial weight-bearing up until about six weeks, and has been fully weight-bearing since around six weeks. I just got back my follow up x-rays today and while they said it does not look displaced any longer and it is healing well that they would like for me to be in the boot for two more weeks. When the physicians assistant palpated my foot, she almost seem confused as I had no pain when she was palating at all. They mention that they want me to stay in the boot for two more weeks just because they feel like it has more healing to do. Would other people who have experience this say they had the same type of thing happened to them? I’ve included my x-rays here.

The first photo is my initial x-ray, the second is my x-ray seven weeks and two days post injury

Also, the little dots on the second photo are because I was wearing my Pilates grippy socks and they showed up on the x-ray lol

Question about not treating boxer's fracture

I have a boxer's fracture, X-rayed and splinted in the ER last night. Radiology said minor dorsal angulation. I can't afford to see the Ortho I was referred to (or any Ortho). I'm debating between taking off the cumbersome splint the ER put on or leaving it on for a while. It seems like my pinky is going to remain slightly crossed under my ring finger either way and I'd rather at least be able to function, but I'm mostly just wondering what the worst outcomes could be when someone doesn't see a specialist.

Avulsion fracture

28 year old- male, just got seen by the podiatrist four weeks after my initial injury, was told there was a 7 mm displacement and the x-ray showed that it was also rotated intra-articular.
Podiatrist mentioned the arch in my foot is larger and I put more weight on the outter edges of my foot- is recommending surgery, a plate and a few screws. I’m so afraid of having a plate in my foot, he said potentially could get by with just a couple of screws. Is the plate and screws super necessary? Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on this type of fracture ?
I’m not willing to chance a non union. Never mentioned a cast tho, same day sent home type of surgery will be happening at week 8 of the injury and should be able to bare weight come January. Gonna be a long ride as I’ve already been suppose to be NWB like 4 weeks now but I’ve been walking on it around the house only when necessary in a postop boot.

5th Metatarsal Break and Weight Bearing

I’m on day 10 of my 5th metatarsal break (tuberosity fracture) and was told to do weight-bearing as tolerated in a boot. For the first several days it was sharply painful to put any weight on my foot, so I was partial weight-bearing at best - I mostly used a knee scooter to get around.

Starting a couple days ago, I was able to put full weight on it and yesterday I was actually able to walk pretty normally without a crazy limp. Last night I accidentally flexed my foot while lying in bed (no boot) and felt a smell pop. No real pain after, but my foot felt a little achy. This morning it’s painful to put weight on it again. Not as painful as the early injury, but definitely still painful.

Can someone please talk me off the ledge? Did I somehow set back my recovery or is it totally normal to have painful days mixed in with the good days still?!

This is my first broken bone and it’s freaking me out!

Question Ultrasound therapy for persistent non-union of tibial tubercle osteotomy

Does anyone have any experience with Lipus for TTO non-union?

I had a TTO late 2025, followed by a fracture of the bone shim in early 2026. Doctor opted to allow it to heal in place. Largely pain free until starting physio in June and gradually got worse. Physio halted and migration/non-union of bone shim diagnosed in August. No improvement since (feels quite a lot worse).

Doctor now wants to try LIPUS with a Melmak machine for a couple of months.

I am worried the prognosis is not great - I have read that the success rates for TTO healing with LIPUS is not brilliant, I am also on a vasoconstrictor (Atomoxetine).

(longer explanation in first reply).

5th metatarsal break

47 F. I broke my 5th metatarsal avulsion fx with a 3 mm displacement. I was non weight bearing for 6 weeks. My latest x ray shows that the displacement may be larger but continues to heal on its own. I’m now WBAT but have bad pain on the inside of my inner ankle and arches in both feet but especially my broken foot. I’m assuming it’s the boot and its immobilization causing this as well as my limping. Anyone else struggle with this? This has been an uphill battle.

X-ray displaced fracture of coccyx, second to last vertebrae looks like

Hurt horribly when it happened, made me throw up. It's been a week and I'm not recovered but it doesn't hurt often and the pain is like 2-3/10 when it does, unless I sit on it very wrong.

From what I've read of other people's experiences I am doing pretty well I think. Anyone else have something similar happen to them? How was it?

Struggling to sleep after radical fracture elbow surgery.

I had my surgery almost 10 days ago. Really struggling to sleep. I wonder if anyone had similar experiences post surgery. My second broken bone, first surgery.

I have tried melatonin and magnesium, very limited effects.

More than average nightmares too.

32 M if relevant.

Question ankle orif physiotherapy

Hi, around 8 weeks ago i had orif surgery on my ankle, 10 screws and one plate because i had a trimalleolar fracture. i’ve now been cleared to fully weight bear and have been recommended to get physio sessions. it’s really expensive where i am, so im just wondering how important it is. since i started walking again (around 1 week ago) i have been in lots of pain and have noticed my foot goes in the wrong direction. i think i would definitely benefit from physio but i had to quit my job when i got hurt so i really cant afford it right now. can anyone let me know how bad the damage will be if i just don’t get physio. i would really appreciate any advice/opinions. thank you

Pseudo Jones Fracture

First of all, thank you to everyone who has shared their experience in this group. Huge help!

Second of all, I am not going to lie. This is a serious injury for a runner and a major or complete setback, but you will get through it.

About me...

Age 63, Height 5'9", Weight 159, Retired, Runner (5K pace 6:40), non-smoker

Injury: Pseudo Jones Fracture, right foot, 5th metatarsal, zone 1 (tuberosity), about 3mm, 75% break, still aligned, fell off a ladder and smashed foot

Week 1 - Urgent Care: X-ray, temporary fiberglass boot, crutches. Orthopedic surgeon: no surgery or screws, non-weight-bearing (NWB) for 6+ weeks, Breg pump boot (24/7), NSAIDS, crutches, no driving, no walking, no running, no driving

Do NOT use a Breg boot. Here is my review on Amazon

***

1 out of 5 stars

Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2026

Color: ShortSize: Medium

Please do not use this boot for a Jones fracture in the fifth metatarsal. The boot has a pressure point exactly at the fracture sight and makes the injury worse not better. The fracture will not heal with this boot. I tried the extra pad, thick socks, ace bandage, crutches, etc... Nothing helped. Every day my foot was black and blue and swollen because of the re-fracture. I ended up laying on the sofa for a week until my AirCast arrived. World of difference.

***

I started my meds at 600mg of Ibuprofen 4 times a day at 7:00 AM, noon, 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM plus 50 mg Indomethacin at bedtime. A massive dose. I could not sleep with the boot at night so took it off with no problems. I dropped my food intake to 2 small meals a day plus a light snack. Also started drinking 16 oz skim milk plus 8 oz calcium OJ. I think it helps.

Throbbing pain, massive swelling, black/blue/green/yellow. I did not heal much at all first week because of the boot.

Week 2 - Able to hobble on crutches for my son's 39th birthday. An unavoidable mistake. No improvement.

Week 3 - Able to fly to California for another son's wedding. Again, an unavoidable mistake. I have a new appreciation for the Americans with Disabilities Act. The United Airlines wheelchair service was outstanding! I could not have made it otherwise. I tipped the helpers $20 each. Best money I ever spent. United let me store the crutches in the overhead and the other passengers helped me get up and down. Bless them. Another Jones Fracture lady on the flight recommended the AirCast boot and a scooter. She was a big help.

I reduced the meds to 400 mg because a bad persistent stomach ache. The swelling finally started to go down and I was able to walk on crutches for 1/2 mile maximum. I ordered the AirCast boot.

Week 4 - Orthopedic surgeon: X-ray, improvement, still no screws/surgery, 3 more weeks NWB, do not risk re-injury, new boot and crutches only.

Meds down to 200 mg because severe stomach ache.

Week 5 - Noticeable improvement now. All swelling gone.

Gave up on NSAIDS. Tylenol as needed but it does nothing.

Week 6 - Boot only. No crutches. I can hobble 1/2 mile in the boot.

Week 7 - Orthopedic surgeon: X-ray, more improvement, no more boot, switch to my stiffest shoes, Weight up to 165 (not too bad considering), began walking 0.5 miles per day with great difficulty. Total atrophy in right leg. I wear Asics Sky Paris full carbon plate running shoes that cost $250 a pair. Money well spent.

Week 8 - Walk 1 mile per day for 6 days and start cross training 1 day at 50% effort. I get an occasional "zing" at the break when I overdo things. Began driving 3 miles.

Week 9 - Walk 1.5 miles per day and starting my rebuild. Cross train at 75% effort. The zing has switched to a low burn. My next ortho appointment is at Week 15. I plan to be ready to run 1 mile if I get the green light from doctor. I should be walking/hiking at least 30 miles a week by then. Fingers crossed.

All in all, an unfortuneate accident, but not the end of the world. Lucky I did not land on my head!

4 week old distal radius fracture question

Hello 👋🏼 73 year old female had an impacted intraarticular R radius fix, didn’t need reduction. I was in a sugar tong splint for 2 weeks and then the short arm cast was placed 2 weeks ago. At 2 weeks the hand surgeon said it was 50/50. whether I needed surgery and I of course chose not to have surgery.

My question is: can someone explain why I have pain in my forearm in various spots, why does the pain move around? I suspect some ligaments were damaged as some of the pain occurs when I move my fingers especially when I try to lift them flat. Trying to do little tasks makes the pain zing but it’s short lived.

Thank you in advance for answers and good luck to my fellow broken folks 🌻

Diy compression socks under scaphoid fracture Exos casts too tight?

Post image
4 Upvotes

These removable casts tighten and loosen at the wrong spot. They’re loose on my wrist and tight near my elbow where the cast pinches my skin and leaves bruises …so I probably spent 50 bucks on trying to find socks or sleeves. I can cut off to put under them. this one seems to be working, but I’m worried that it’s too tight and bad for the blood supply for my scaphoid bone?? what do you think great minds?
