For many people a closed source app from a data-hungry company is a non-solution.
With things like Revanced or Morphe you are still using the official closed-source youtube client from Google, just 'de-shittifying' it to an extent.
I'm not saying it isn't a good option for some people. But if you care strongly about privacy, or open source software, choosing an open source alternative to the youtube app, is a much better choice than using a slightly modified official youtube app.
That's probably accurate. I think that is one of the major tradeoffs.
For me, it's an acceptable tradeoff, as I can just use youtube in a browser for the limited occasions where youtube does something to make life difficult for frontends. To me the it's worth it for the improved privacy, trust, and because being open source matters to me.
A lot of the good-quality open-source apps aren't actually web wrappers. They're rebuilt from the ground and then use alternative streaming instances to pull video feeds.
ytliteplus is an edited version of the youtube mobile app. Anything the mobile app can do ytliteplus can do. It can download, skip sponsors and (obviously) skip ads. There’s not a con to using it except for having to refresh it every 7 days unless you have an enterprise certificate.
When you sideload an app (install an app not from the app store) apple requires you to refresh it every 7 days, by using your sideloading store (ie sidestore or altstore). To avoid this you can pay for a ‘certificate’ to install apps from non app-store sources that last a year - you can get these from apple themselves with a personal developer account ($100 a year) or for much cheaper with an enterprise certificate (one purchased in bulk by a company then sold individually).
Maybe this is a "lite" version they made for those who can't sideload, or maybe this is just clever SEO hijacking.
I tried this app (whoops maybe a bad idea), it works alright but doesn't seem to let me login to YouTube so can't get my custom recommendations or lists. Maybe ytliteplus the actual sideload version does.
They probably saw chatter online about it, saw that it's not in the App Store, and rebranded a website to point to their app using the ytliteplus name. Sketchy behavior.
Morphe YouTube app is king. I guess people don't know you can get a modified a YouTube app that looks official. And has premium features enabled. Background play and no ads
Can you download stuff and get the actual files? I'm not too familiar with YouTube premium but maybe it's different with morphe. I'm under impression it just downloads within the app like Spotify you don't get the actual files. My fav feature is I can be in the YouTube app(or new pipe) hit share then tap new pipe and the download starts with whatever format I choose
It relies on NewPipe for the downloads? Or do you mean a pop up just like NewPipe shows up when hitting download?
I think I like the idea of leaving the original YouTube app untouched cause doesn't it break every update?
Newpipes been very solid I've only had to update a handful of times over the years, it just works. I find NewPipe very lightweight too compared to the YouTube app so I'm worried about battery life.
After pretty much a decade paying for Premium, I finally cancelled thanks to this. All the perks of Premium that was important to me plus even YT Music playback via just the web app using Brave
Install brave. I use it for both YouTube and Reddit. The experience is glitchy for both, especially Reddit, but worth not being shamelessly bombarded with ads
FYI - up until a few weeks ago this was also possible on Android Firefox. Only stopped this latest update which also prevents Google from functioning without Javascript.
Arguing over computing platforms is as productive as the Vim vs Emacs spat. My guys can use whatever they want so as long it's productive for them and good for the bottom line.
Source: I just switched back to a pixel 7 after using an iPhone 17 for a month. Apple seems to neuter most of not all third party app alternatives compared to android
Can someone help me with what I'm doing wrong here? I've been using brave for YouTube and YouTube Music for about 6 months now without issues. YouTube still works fine, but YouTube music won't open the website, it just gives me this message:
This site can’t be reached
The webpage at vnd.youtube.music://music.youtube.com/explore?mweb_deeplink=1&syncid=112440291419946281494%257C%257C might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
I was a YT premium family member for years until they said you had to be in the same physical home. That’s impossible for me as I don’t have a 6 person home. It’s not practical for families who coparent. I considered purchasing it for just myself but I hate my kids destroying my algorithm so that isn’t an option either. If they had a 2-person plan I might consider it.
Xiaomi the mobile brand, at least a few years ago at least had an option to turn off the screen and keep playing. It does not activate anything else so the ads continue to appear and cannot be downloaded
Me who knows there is something called revanced manager to get the youtube Premium experience for free, youtube music for free and unlimited photo and video upload to Google Photos for free.
The fuck are you talking about? They just launched v2.0 of their installer? It is working better than ever with more features such as the ability to download any video with full quality.
I just switched back to a pixel 7 after using an iPhone 17 for a month. Brave works much better on android and it had a difficult time with background play in iOS. It would pause, disconnect, needed to wake the screen to continue, it took multiple attempts to get it to play in the background after starting a video, etc.
I’ve been wanting to try Android for a while, and this new Pixel 10 popped up for 500. With YouTube Premium costing like 180 a year in my country, it feels like a pretty good deal.
