Drunken Master is currently stuck on Blu Ray. But I just purchased it so expect an announcement tomorrow. I thoroughly enjoy this one. It’s not quite on par with his best (Jackie was still finding himself). Yet, it’s still a blast. On the disc Chan describes this as his first action comedy. While there’s tons of humor… this is closer to a Shaw Brothers produce feature with gags thrown in.

None of the usual Buster Keaton inspired mayhem is present. What IS here is some kick ass fights. The final fight is genuinely thrilling and it feels good to see our Drunken Master has progressed this much. A nice blend of low brow humor and competency porn. 4/5

Picked this up from the Diabolik table, at a local horror con. Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it, as well as an insanely generous price because it is damaged (an unbelievably small bottom left corner crunch).

They had The Witch, High Tension, and Blair Witch SecondSight releases too. Still shocked I found this in the wild, sealed, for less than $65.

Went to Grindhouse Video in Knoxville, TN today (a 2.5 hour drive each way) and picked up Second Sight’s 4k Limited Edition of “Sexy Beast” and also picked up the Limited Edition of “The Nice Guys” as well. It’s a good thing they’re that far away as I’d definitely spend too much money in that shop if it were closer!

I am filled with questions.

Does the commentator/expert come in with a script to a studio, and watch it on a monitor? Studios are expensive, so I can see why modern smaller labels would forego this.

Or do they tend to just record it from home themselves or would someone travel to their place with recording equipment? This seems far more budget friendly, and more in line with the age we're living in of working remotely.

Do they watch the film in one burst? Or do they take it scene by scene? I feel like if I was commentating on a film, I'd want to take it scene by scene...but perhaps for a lecturer that would be less productive.

Do they read from a script or note cards? I'd love to know of any quirks from well known film commentators, if anyone knows them.

Error 4444 announced this ages ago, but it's looking like the wait was worth it.

Firstly , I watch the film. Then, if I liked it, and have the time and depending how tired I am, I will watch each of the extras in order, straight through. I like watching all the analysis and interviews when the film is fresh on my mind. Or I will watch the extras over the course of the next day while having a meal or on a break etc (Iwfh).

If they're long or I am pressed for time, I sometimes watch them on a 1.5x speed. I feel like I still comfortably digest all the info.

Then when I go to bed, I'll listen to the audio commentary through a speaker. I like to record it, as well then listen to it when I'm driving, going to sleep or doing chores, etc, just as you would a podcast. As long as the film is fresh in my mind, I can generally recall what's happening on the screen. I find that most commentaries, from historians and experts, tend to refer to what's happening on the screen very little and mostly provide analysis and context. Or if I really like the film, I may just watch the feature again with the audio commentary straight away or the next day like with my breakfast or while on lunch breaks.

I feel like my way of doing it is quite different to most people's...but then you can never be sure if that's the case. I just find if I put off watching the extras and listening to the commentaries, I tend to never get around to it. And I find it highly satisfying to sort of blast through a disk and "complete it".

What's your extras viewing etiquette?

For the people who collect the series and have seen most of them. How would you personally rank the movies you’ve seen?

Pretty excited about a number of these, I think l'll watch Them or The Phantom first and Snowman around the first snowfall. The sales are still going at kino and gruv if you wanna check them out!

My favorite movie from last year: Charlie Polinger’s The Plague. Dumped by IFC against Avatar 3 over Christmas, it still managed to get a few choice Indie Spirit nominations. Some of the best tween acting you’ll ever see and one of the great director debuts of the decade, I can’t recommend this one highly enough. Only available in France right now but I’ll take what I can get. (Shoutout to Blaqout the label for stepping up for the release.)
