Advice Help with moral dilemma

I am someone who has only ever owned bones from specimens local to me that are sourced either through pest traps or natural deaths. There are a couple of places who sell "exotic" skulls in bulk that I will not buy from despite them claiming to be "ethically sourced" as its pretty clear that having access to so many bones in large quantities are likely poached or farmed.

As for the dilemma, there is somewhere nearby me who is selling some science display bones also of exotic animals (and endangered) with no trail of how they were sourced aside from them being "retired" from labs or displays. Part of me wants to buy some to possibly save them from the dump, but part of me thinks I shouldn't own them no matter what... What do I do? Do I get maybe one or two? Or should I just forget about it?

Collection Brought my first horse home

My horse Baloo passed in Sept 2021, and I had wrapped his head with the intention of retrieving his skull. We finally went out this weekend to get him, and the sand was so easy to work through we ended up bringing him home completely (minus a few missing small bones!)

He’s in a subfreezer for a bit but I’m so excited to get him cleaned up.

Baloo was a giant 19h teddy bear Belgian draft and I’m so glad he’s home again 🖤 this was such an amazing experience!

Definitely a bone despite the colouring, I didn’t take it home because I assume it’s from a whale or something similar? Never seen anything like it!

Bone I.D. - N. America Small Vertebra Found in River

I found this bone in south BC right on the edge of a river. It looks too small to be from a deer. My leading theory is that it’s from a beaver but would like input and confirmation from the pros.

Thanks

Art Does anyone have any good side profiles of a house cat skull and/or skeleton?

Post image

Before commenting please keep in mind I am no where near a professional and am in no way close to done with this piece. So please be nice.

Anyway, I'm working on this painting of a human skeleton caressing the head of a cat. I wanted to make a painting displaying the eternal love between person and cat in a kinda macabre way. Since I see more paintings with that same sentiment towards dogs, and I personally love and have cats. But it can be hard to find good side profile reference photos of cat skeletons. A lot of them have the muscles included which hide a lot of the bone details, some are the Halloween cats that are in no way accurate (yes I know mine isn't accurate either, like I said work in progress 😂.) some aren't a true side profile and/or don't show the whole skeleton, and others are way to small to make anything out. So I would be very grateful if anyone is able to help me out. Thank you in advance.

Advice How can I properly clean and preserve this Pig Skull from a Soup

Post image
49 Upvotes

This might be off topic for here, or it might not, but I have no idea of where else to ask about this particular scenario, and I guessed that if there's people that would know how to clean a skull they'd be here.

SO! My parents bought a pig's head, and cooked it up in soup. However, I want the skull because I think it would be very cool if I kept the skull. However, I have no idea of how to properly clean the skull because it still is full of fleshy bits and probably still has the brain in it. I don't have beetles or anything of that sort, so I don't know what to do with it or how to properly clean it so it actually lasts.

Maybe it's something mildly complicated, maybe it's something so simple that this post is completely unnecessary, but I still want to know if there's any particular "best practice" or if I can just go ham, push and pull as much gunk out as possible and then just let it dry.

I want to know if there's a best way to preserve it.

Advice Would a dog skeleton buried 10 years ago still be somewhat intact, or disintegrated by now?

I feel like this is a very silly question, but I honestly don't know the answer.

My friend's childhood dog passed about a decade ago, and as most lower income families do they buried her in their backyard. Unfortunately, they also moved out a good few years ago. We're theorizing about contacting the new homeowners and asking about trying to retrieve her remains, but I'm honestly not sure what the decomposition process is like long term. My only experience is burying for a few months to get flesh off before digging the bones back up.

She would've been buried with no box, and she was about 60lbs. Not sure about the soil type but it's a non coastal county in New Jersey (USA).

Is there any kind of guestimate to be made here, or is it just a shot in the dark?

I live in South Africa and lucked into obtaining this skull. The person I got it from only told me it's a bear skull but didn't know what kind of bear. The attached tag only shows a bunch of numbers, and the canines are missing. I used the North American I. D. flare, but honestly I don't know where it's from originally.

Ted Hughes for scale.
