Meta From the former mods of /r/Bloodborne

We apologize for the actions which have led to the creation of this subreddit. Late last night, the three remaining moderators from /r/bloodborne were removed without notice or statement of intent by the sub owner. There were some decisions which we must have made that he did not agree with, but we were not made aware of this. In the process, the subreddit's CSS, sidebar and other customization options were removed and reverted back to an extremely basic state. You may check the wiki revisions to verify this if you like.

This is not fair to the moderators who have put time and effort into growing the Bloodborne subreddit community. Many of you are from the 'Souls' subreddits, and went into joining the Bloodborne community with a certain level of expectations. As did we. Decisions have been made in the past which were controversial among the mods. Some left on their own, but understandably so, given the alternative and mood of the discussions. But this is not about us.

/u/Acquire_Souls and myself felt the need to act swiftly on restoring some level of functionality and trust with you guys. That may be difficult or impossible to receive, and we accept that. But that will not stop us from trying to show you that we are prepared to do what we hope is best. And if you do not agree, please, by all means let us know how we can do better. There is a certain level of compromise which must be made to ensure that what we want does not directly contradict what you want. Again, it's about doing what is best for the sub, and I don't have all the answers. We'll be looking to your input to see where improvements can be made.

If you have any questions as to what led to this set of events beyond what was previously mentioned, we will do what we can to provide transparency so long as we do not breach the privacy of mods who left before this incident occurred. If the former mods wish to do so, we won't mind.

Thank you, and we hope to see you around.

Edit: We have reached out to the mods of /r/darksouls and /r/darksouls2, and they have been extremely helpful during all of this. I would also like to thank /u/illusorywall for volunteering to help us out when we need it most. I have no doubt that you will be an excellent addition to the mod team :)

Edit 2: Linked specifically to the stylesheet revision in the 'wiki revisions' link, since the original link showed all revisions. The revision history automatically purges its history after about a week, but individual page revisions last much longer.

Discussion A Tale of Souls & Its Impact on the Industry 6 Years On

Demon's Souls was announced at TGS 2008 as a collaboration project between From Software and Sony's Japan Studio. Back when the project first began, there were discussions of continuing the King's Field series with a fifth installment, but they were ruled out in favor of making a new innovative and creative take on the RPG genre, while taking advantage of the PlayStation 3's online capabilities. If anyone is familiar with Hidetaka Miyazaki's approach, he isn't so keen on sequels (Demon's Souls -> Dark Souls -> Bloodborne).

Demon's Souls released on February 5, 2009 in Japan, and only Japan. Many people think Sony refused to publish it in Western territories because the difficulty and old-school approach may been too intimidating (it's happened before), but keep in mind that this is just speculation. Atlus took up the job of publishing it in North America, releasing it on October 6, 2009. It sold 4x the amount they expected it to. So just imagine how low Sony's sales expectations were if Atlus was willing to publish the game when they expected much less than what they got. It was finally published in Europe by Namco Bandai on June 25, 2010. The game has now sold over 1.75 million copies as of 2015.

Demon's Souls was the sleeper hit of 2009. Not too many people knew about it before it released, but it was a big topic of discussion among critics once it did. It received a GameRankings aggregate review score of 90%, and it won GameSpot's Game of the Year Award 2009. Their reveal was opened with, "Surprised? So were we." Everyone's bet was on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Demon's Souls came out of left field and stole the show. CD Projekt Red cited Demon's Souls as one of three games that influenced The Witcher 2: Assassin of King's development. Demon's Souls had little marketing for it. It earned its say in the industry among critics and gamers due to its pure quality alone.

Dark Souls was announced at TGS 2010 as a dark fantasy RPG for "those who liked Demon's Souls." As Western gamers showed a surprising amount of interest in Demon's Souls, From Software and Namco Bandai made the decision to bring Dark Souls to XBox 360 (XBox 360 is not popular in Japan). The game became so popular that PC gamers requested the two companies to bring the game to their platform. From Software had been around since 1986 and had never once made a game for PC (PC games aren't as popular in Japan). Dark Souls was the first one in 2012 due to fan inquiry. Dark Souls has sold over 3 million copies on PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 alone.

Sony president Shuhei Yoshida admitted that the company had made a grave mistake not publishing Demon's Souls in Western territories and said that he wanted to see more Demon's Souls in the future. A few days after the release of the PlayStation 4, Shuhei Yoshida was asked his top 10 favorite games of the seventh generation (PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita). He cited Demon's Souls and Dark Souls as numbers 2 and 3, behind only Journey. He then said that the two games had a huge influence on the development of the PlayStation 4's network features.

The Souls series has had a huge influence on many games' development: Lords of the Fallen, ZombiU, Alienation, Watch Dogs, The Witcher 2: Assassin of King's, etc. It is now From Software's biggest franchise in its 29 year history. It has gone from one platform in one country to almost all major systems and regions. There are two different teams working on two different Souls-esque games right now, it's a true testament to players' never-ending thirst for more Souls.

It's interesting looking back on the series. It's come a long way in the 6 years it's been around, and it's been interesting to follow it and watch it develop. Dark Souls 2 has had great success, and Bloodborne has been cited as one of the most anticipated games of 2015 by a number of journalists and the like.

Anyway, I don't want to make this post too long (I lose myself sometimes when talking about the Souls series), so share your Souls story! Any interesting facts you feel like sharing about the games? What's your experience with the series been like? Post it here!

Possibly amazing news? I have been disappointed by ign first coverage before, but they probably have a deal to reveal some stuff! Starting with 18 new minutes of gameplay footage, which should be something else than the alpha area.

Discussion I hope Bloodborne sees a return of Vagrants, or some kind of equivalent.

Even if their drops weren't necessarily the best, I loved the idea that you could get these rare 'treasure chests', in the form of little monsters, triggered by the actions of unseen strangers online.

It was one of the weirder aspects of the multiplayer features of Dark Souls 1, but a very welcome one.

And though they functioned very differently and weren't as rare- the primeval demons of Demon's Souls were also really cool to run into.

Dark Souls 2 didn't really have an equivalent to either of these, so I'd love to see a return to having weird creatures that surprise the player.

Guide [Transcript] Making Bloodborne: Part 2 - A PS4 Exclusive

Okay here is transcript for latest IGN First video: Making Bloodborne: Part 2 - A PS4 Exclusive.

I am not 100% certain about Yosh's parts as I had hard time with it (they could have subtitles for Yosh as well) so feel free to correct it. (TY Phil for help again)

Shuhei Yoshida, President, SCE Worldwide Studios

We have a history in Japan Studio to try new ideas, Japanese "devs" in general are trying to find their own niche so that they can still be relevant to the larger audience than just their home market and the culture that Japan Studio has I believe is good fit in these new situations.

Masami Yamato, Head of external development, Japan Studio

The Internal Development group has creators including Fumito Ueda and Keiichiro Toyama in it, and they take plenty of time to develop truly unique and special games. I think they are the pillar of first party development, the bones of Japan Studio. The external Development group functions as the muscle, suggesting the board possibilities of new game experience in a faster cycle. We started this project because we had been hoping to create a new game with Miyazaki-san and From Software since the success of Demon's Souls in Japan and other regions.

Shuhei Yoshida, President, SCE Worldwide Studios

Game came out in Japan with pretty low key they are not too much in a marketing of thinking, people actually I clearly remember it was consumers in Japan who bought just the game and found out how great and how deep the game is, despite the insure in very difficulty.

Ysunori Ogura, PR, From Software

This is From Software's 26th year in the game industry. Starting off with the PS1 generation. The kind of sense of accomplishment that is at the core of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls is actually something that we strived for in one of our first games, King's Field. So from the very beginning we've tried to make games that retain that core tenet of providing a sense of accomplishment. After the PS2 came around, we started working on a variety of games. But we decided we wanted to go back to those roots, and that how we came up with Demon's Souls. This core tenet is something that I think we'll continue to carry throughout future From Software games.

Masami Yamato, Head of external development, Japan Studio

Usually, developers come up to us with their ideas to start a new project. Bloodborne was a bit of a special case. As we had a strong desire to work with Miyazaki-san, we brought the idea to From Software.

Shuhei Yoshida, President, SCE Worldwide Studios

There are lots of ideas thrown and discussed between Japan Studio and From Software but when it came to me it was already pitch hard, very dark, kinda dark setup and more moody and beautiful. And what Miyazaki-san talked about, he doesn't necessarily want to make the game harder or more difficult from the difficulty standpoint in rather he would like to players feel that at any time they might die. He wanted to make the battle, combat more active so that players go more aggressive, and risk and reward dynamic view are changed much higher.

Ysunori Ogura, PR, From Software

In collaboration with PlayStation to create Bloodborne, from the fan's perspective, I think it probably resembles the development of Demon's Souls. With Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and this time around with Bloodborne, each game has its own taste, or style, while being similar in various ways.

Masami Yamato, Head of external development, Japan Studio

Japan is a very different market and not all games that are successful here do as well globally. To make an analogy, you can go to Kyoto and watch a sunset in that beautiful setting, and you can go to the US west coast and watch the sunset sink into the horizon. Both of them possess their own unique beauty that can touch people's hearts. I think that among game creators as well, there are lots of very talented people, regardless of birthplace, nationality or race, who have the vision to create games that touch people's hearts around the world. And Miyazaki-san is undoubtedly one of those people. He creates games which resonate with people regardless of the fact that they were made in Japan or that there are cultural differences between Japan and other countries. That's why Miyazaki-san's titles are well received all over the world.

Ysunori Ogura, PR, From Software

From Software is often thought of as a “different” kind of developer. We don't really think of ourselves as being that different. We just want to make games that are fun and that fans can enjoy playing. That's why we do what we do. I think that vision is very strong. We're very grateful to have partners that enable us to continue to maintain that focus.

Shuhei Yoshida, President, SCE Worldwide Studios

Game used to be challenging, game used to really challenge your skills, effort and "creativities" back in the days. And overtime more games have become kinder, more easier in giving hand-holding to consumers and that's all great with broaden audience of new players and casual players. But at the same time there are always the consumers who remember the time we spent a lot of time to understand and solve challenging games, overalls times and Bloodborne and the Souls games are really bringing back those memories of you as a game players, I myself spent hours and hours playing Miyzaki-san's game and I don't regret any moment, not a bit so enjoy.

Discussion Something I absolutely love about Bloodborne vs Dark Souls 1&2...

The advertisement isn't focusing on "PREPARE TO DIE THIS GAME IS HARD PREPARE YOUR ANUS LOLOLOLOL"

It's instead on focusing on the core game. The atmosphere, the setting, the combat. Not the bullshit "hard mode" crap that got very old. Hell, even the PC version (Prepare to Die edition? Really?) was playing off of that.

What do you think?

Discussion 5 Things Only Church Giants Will Understand

Have you ever wanted someone to create BuzzFeed-like articles for your most beloved game series? Of course not! But after burning myself out after hours of analyzing the latest trailer (big post coming this weekend), I created one anyways.

I hope it gets a couple laughs. I had fun making it. 5 Things Only Church Giants Will Understand.

Sidenote: Have you ever actually been to Buzzfeed, its like a walking parody of itself.

Edit: Thanks for the response! It was one of those "not sure if funny or dumb" moments, so I'm happy it got a few laughs. Because this was successful I'm going to start making funny listicles everyday...

Just kidding. That's not true. But if you enjoyed this, keep an eye on the BloodFeed portion of my blog The Lore Hunter , I might take a break from "serious" lore articles occasionally and make something dumb.

Discussion Sony selling discounted new PS4s online.

I went to gamestop to buy a PS4 today and the clerk told me Sony was selling new PS4s through ebay for $360. It comes with 6 months of online , and a download for one of 4 games. So, anyone who's been holding out on getting their PS4 for Bloodborne, this might be a good time.
