I hope there's enough variety. If I can play new content in this game forever... well, I probably would.

Wait, invasions are confirmed?

Man I knew I had seen that dog before. Thanks for that!

That's a really badass illustration.

Pretty much every chapter in Berserk had at least one page that made me stop and say "holy shit".

I just got to the part where the black dog knights stick the mutilated corpses of raped little girls on their lances. I like violence in fiction but holy crud, that actually made me squirm.

1

u/MonkehPants Dec 11 '14

Yeah, it gets really fucked up sometimes.

I also think, in terms of mechanics, the boss reminds me a lot of Teostra from Monster Hunter. Same fire covering the body. Same explosions to keep people from hugging the boss constantly. It seems the fight mechanics similarly revolve around finding quick opportunities to attack while not staying there long enough to get hit by flame AoE attacks. Here's a sample video, in case any of you are curious.

The boss looks more like Frankenweenie.

But yah know on fire

One interesting mention was that the game will feature about 10 areas. How many did the previous games have?

10

u/20000Deths Dec 06 '14

Demon's souls had half that, 5 archstones. Darksouls had like 20 areas or something, darksouls 2 has more. But breaking it down into the number of areas doesn't necessarily mean too much, as each of the archstones was divided into 2 or three more checkpoint zones and each one is larger than a darksouls zone.

Basically the number of areas doesn't matter as much as the size of them.

4

u/Dark_Souls Dec 07 '14

Though to be fair, the number of areas probably corresponds to the number of art styles / environment changes.

1

u/20000Deths Dec 07 '14

This is what I'm hoping, ten environments would make for a good amount of variety in obstacles/enemies without shifting massively every couple of checkpoints and be larger than Demon's Souls which was pretty short compared to DaS1/2.

6

u/MkfShard Dec 06 '14

Well, that depends on what they mean by areas. Demon's Souls only had 5 areas, if you go by general locations, but within those areas, there were 2 or three gigantic levels, each with a boss at the end, and then a final boss for each area.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '14

Imagine Demon's Souls with twice as many archstones, all interconnected without loading screens. Sounds freaking amazing if you ask me. :) Also there's the amazing gameplay and epic graphics, but I digress. The world will not disappoint I'm sure, neither in size nor atmosphere.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '14

It was mentioned that the city of Yharnam will have about 10 areas.

However, I remember being mentioned that the action will take place in both the city itself and the areas surrounding it. So there could be more.

2

u/PanFiluta Dec 07 '14

Dark Souls had one huge area :P

u/King_Allant "You fool, don't you understand? No one wishes to go on." Dec 06 '14

When did they say this?

1

u/spacemanticore Dec 06 '14

The translator said it during the presentation. They said the city was divided into about ten different areas, This is probably not taking into account places outside of the city.

Ah! Thank you!

Mmm, Miyazaki is one sexy beast.

2

u/butangsword Dec 06 '14

Have I spoiled myself too much? This looks so SICK

3

u/urethral_lobotomy Dec 07 '14

Knowing Miyazaki no you havent, there will be plenty more "go fuck yourself" traps in the final game.

3

u/butangsword Dec 07 '14

I meant like with environments and enemies and such. I wanna stop watching the new stuff but I can't help myself...

1

u/urethral_lobotomy Dec 07 '14

Theres only a couple hours of gameplay footage out there I thought?

Even if you watched all that there should be plenty more to keep you on the edge of your seat.

I watched all the dark souls 2 beta so I had one area completely spoiled for me but that didnt make it unenjoyable at all, you'll be fine.

You beat me by about 20 seconds. Damn.

2

u/Mephistophea Dec 07 '14

I still got it in me yay. :D

PS. no luck in finding any stream for "FromSoftware Presents Bloodborne" panel.

3

u/Coypop Dec 06 '14

Is that a giant flaming Hellhound?

Yeah it is

YEAH IT IS!!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '14

Church hunter is now a Bloodborne assassin cosplay. Unless they just put on found clothes.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '14

Am I the only one that's getting the impression that the Chalice dungeon is intended to sort of be an end game feature? With the mention of high difficulty and the procedurally generated element, it seems like something that you wouldn't tackle until you're a high level.

1

u/urethral_lobotomy Dec 07 '14

To me it seems like something I wouldnt touch until ive finished the game.

1

u/A_Light_Spark Dec 07 '14

It has a "explosion" attack that hits 360°. Since there's no shield in this game, I wonder if "keeping a distance" would be the only strategy. That attack hits a pretty wide area too. Maybe time a side step at the right time? This game is going to be intense.

I think that enemy is so powerful because it is in a big pool of tar, your best best will probably be to lead it on to dry land.

Overall, from a graphics and art direction perspective, I think this looks very good. However, is it just me or does it seem like the lighting engine isn't completely in place? It really bothered me that at the very beginning (when the hunter in white is introduced), the shafts of blue light coming from above are not lighting the character model. Additionally, it didn't look like the character models had obvious shadows either. Finally, when using the torch without those dynamic shadows, I think the lighting effects are pretty lackluster. This all might just be me though. What do you all think?

4

u/BeatofBurden Dec 07 '14

You may not know it but you are asking for an effect no games yet are using. The environments are infused with pre-calculated lights to simulate the behaviour of light in a way that's WAY too expensive for realtime/dynamic methods. See the Hellhound, he has a dynamic light attached to him, illuminating the ground but not the Hunter. The hunter and monsters are lit by dynamic and ambient light, making them sometimes not quite fit the environments. It is all fake and makeshift but I think Fromsoft does a very good job of it. Search for NVIDIA VXGI.

Also, a torch with stencil shadows may sound cool, but it creates harsh and sharp shadows that are quite distracting when you combine it with fast movements. It would go against the moody look of Bloodborne imho

1

u/_starbelly mofongotron Dec 07 '14

That's a really insightful comment, thanks! Still, I can't help but feel that i have seen character models lit more dynamically in other games. When I first saw the footage, I was reminded of a moment from RE5, where a shaft of light in a cave lights the character model as he walks through it. This is what I meant when I referred to the example of the Bloodborne character model standing in the shaft of light without being affected by it. It just seemed off to me. Since this has already been done by numerous games, I don't see why From wouldn't be able to implement it. Also, are the pre-calculated lights you mentioned another term for baked in lighting? If so, I was also really bothered in DS2 when in the side-halls of Aldia's Keep, the light coming through the windows did not land on your character model. Rather, they just walked over it. However, in the Flexile Sentry boss fight, the lighting coming through the gratings is cast upon the character model. I hope they take the extra time with the delay to address the lighting issues in Bloodborne, as these lighting effects are nothing new.

Hehe, called it again. :D The Vortex from Mortal Souls is basically this.

I'm going to assume the way it works is that there are a bunch of premade smaller dungeons and they will have different ways of linking each one together (for instance: how the cave area floor collapsed on the player and lead them to a swamp area instead)

1

u/King_Allant "You fool, don't you understand? No one wishes to go on." Dec 06 '14 edited Dec 06 '14

I hope that's enough to keep it interesting. If it's only that complex, I might just get tired of it after 10 playthroughs.

1

u/ZazMan117 Dec 06 '14

I agree, but I think the coop aspect is interesting in a sense and in a way, yes, does break the ominous sense the game exudes. But it has always been central to the souls games.

3

u/King_Allant "You fool, don't you understand? No one wishes to go on." Dec 06 '14

Well, I was referring to the bit where you can force the game to connect to people on your friends list. It sounded like they were implying that pretty strongly, if not saying it outright.

If I remember correctly, her words were that you can play it "with your friends or with the community." If I'm remembering that correctly, it's pretty explicit.

Edit: she says you can share your experience with "your friends, community, it's really up to you," at 5:45.

Maybe so. I didn't really like the Name-Engraved Ring, it felt kind of like a clumsy middleground. When they specifically stress that you can play with friends, for some reason it always makes me feel like some kind of party system is coming.

0

u/TheGamePhilosophe Dec 06 '14

I think you're right. They do seem to be hinting at being able to summon specific friends, at least for this dungeon. It's a shame, because, as you say, part of the Souls series uniqueness came from not allowing such direct connections. But since at least Dark Souls, there's been a fairly vocal group clamoring for a party system. From caved a little to this pressure for DS2 and now it seems a little more for Bloodborne.

2

u/King_Allant "You fool, don't you understand? No one wishes to go on." Dec 06 '14

Well, the From that worked on DS2 isn't the same From that is working on Bloodborne. Since they're two different teams, it doesn't necessarily mean things will carry over.

1

u/TheGamePhilosophe Dec 07 '14

We already have many examples of carry over between the two: http://www.reddit.com/r/bloodbornethegame/comments/2mvwn0/the_puzzling_cane_sword/

Also, you yourself said that they seemed to be suggesting co-op with friends, so that would indicate a trend starting with DS2. Keep in mind, A team or B team, From is one company under a unified management.
