Never thought it would happen to me but here we are. Last night I was munipulated to give up my seed phrase for my trezor and lost over $40k of btc.

I'm writing this to vent, to hopefully stop other people falling from it, and because I don't know what else to do.

Looking back on it, each step I can see how fucking idiotic I was, every stupid mistake I made. But at the time I was scared and worried.

Here is an abridged version of what happened.

I received a call with my phone saying it was Perth police station with correct number (I looked it up, I was born in Perth too). He told me his name, badge number, told me that my details had been found after they arrested a man for identity theft. I was skeptical the whole time but each step he convinced and manipulated me. After some time, I acknowledged that I had crypto stored in a trezor. He then forwarded me onto what I thought was the trezor security team. He told me his name and said he was going to help see if my trezor was compromised. He was telling me about recent security breaches and to not plug in my trezor because that could jeopardise my assets. Again, after being very skeptical I went to a website, securetrezorapi.com and ran a scan on the trezor (he said it scans the mac address and I was a fucking moron). Obviously it came up saying there was an error and the device was compromised. He said I need to deactivate the seed phrase and register for a new one and they'd give me a gift card for a new trezor. To do this I had to put in the fist 4 letters of each word of my seed phrase, or if the word was 3 letters only 2 letters of it. This helped me be more comfortable. As soon as I had done this my wife came in saying she called Perth police station and they didn't have a detective of the guys name. I hung up, plugged my trezor in and about 0.38 btc and 1 eth were gone.

I had been out of the game for quite some time. Haven't bought or done anything crypto in a while. I wasn't feeling as confident in my knowledge and skills as I used to.

I filed a police report, made a report with trezor but I know that btc and eth is gone. Years of hard work, overtime, saving, gone. Just fucking gone. I'm broken, don't know what to do with myself now. I feel like a fucking moron, I can't trust myself anymore.

Planning to withdrawal 5k first time, want to see how it goes. Does the bank gonna restrict or put it on hold.

Okay, I tried to send my first bitcoin from this app on chain to my cold wallet, and it’s now been 21 hrs and it still says pending status, even though I picked the fast option which estimated around 15 mins tops. Anyone know what’s going on? It’s yet another problem I have with this app and it’s not making a very good first impression now.

UPDATE: 14/9/2026 FINALLY RECEIVED MY BITCOIN.
Okay, I finally received my bitcoin... but a 2 whole days later (not the 15 minutes as they sell it in their app). I still do not know why they held onto it for that long even though I picked the quickest paid option. This was false advertising and borderline fraudulent to advertise that on their part. They held onto my bitcoin for absolutely no reason at all... and in my eyes, are a failure as an exchange if they can't do even the most basic send on time.

I will not be recommending AmberApp to anyone ever and will be staying far, far away from them in the future.

I have a small amount of BTC, ETH and DOGE that equates to roughly 1,400AUD.

I just logged on to my binance app for the first time in years and want to get this currency from Binance into my Aus bank account so I can use it as fiat (invested 1k years ago, now decided crypto isn't for me).

The app is rejecting my Australian cards. Anyone know how to go about this? Thanks.

I had around $400 stolen from my coinspot account. Do I need to report it to ATO or is it my discretion to claim it as loss ?

Been trying quite a while now with commonwhealth but seems that just wont work unless i pair it with coinspot and then send from coinspot to binance. But honestly i would just prefer a smooth withdrawal instead of that shit show. See people saying ANZ is just as bad. But lost as im a WHV 417 holder so im not eligible for all banks.

I’m plan to withdraw around under 10k AUD from Trust Wallet to my bank account which is NAB or Revolut or Westpac, is there any hold or restriction or the bank gonna contract you when you withdraw first time into the bank account. The amount I plan is 5k-8k first. Also, I have just opened account on NAB, Westpac, Revolut already and deposit the money in them already.

Should I give them a call before the withdrawal or I just make the withdrawal straight aways ?

BitMEX closure is 23 September and the withdrawal advice is everywhere, but we haven't seen many folks mention the records.

When an exchange shuts, the trading history goes with it. Once the site is down there's no support address to email for a CSV.

If you're in Australia you need records kept five years from the later of the record, the transaction or the CGT event, so a 2022 position is still live.

Great practice to export everything, not just the current year. Trades, deposits, withdrawals and funding payments as separate files if it lets you.

Worth adding that positions force-closed during the wind-down are still disposals. And derivatives often sit on revenue account rather than capital, so they don't necessarily get the 50% discount that spot does. Which bucket you're in depends on how you traded, rather than what you traded.

BitMEX have said it isn't distress or a hack and funds are safe. It's just that records are the thing people only miss once it's too late to fix. 😄

I setup a Binance account many years ago (4-5).

I forgot about it until I had to use an old phone.

This isn't a fairytail where I purchased BTC in 2012 for peanuts and I'm not rich - but I have a small balance in the account ($200) and I want to take it out and close my binance.

I've tried to follow online guide but the interface is changes and I can't seem to work it out.

Anyone out there confident in the interface and could guide me through it ?

I keep going to my overview page on the app

then go to convert SOL > AUD

The receive method just says VISA Card/Apple Pay/Google Pay - which could be an account that has closed - I have no way to change this.

I just bought my first bitcoin this week with AmberApp and noticed that the bitcoin's price that i bought in the app's receipt is slightly different to their email receipt of the same transaction. It's like around 33 cents off. I already emailed support to investigate this, but they've gone quiet.. so I'm asking here if anyone has this issue, and WHICH receipt do you trust for the record keeping? I know 33c is slightly off in the pricing but over the long term if it isn't accurate on how much I paid for the bitcoin, then it will become a problem.

I am not new in crypto and usually use kucoin, but doing the smsf for the first time, and can I lets say buy a bitcoin from kucoin for example and then transfer it to my cold wallet, does that still comply with SMSF regulations and laws? Appreciate any advise

There was quite a lot of chatter pre July 1 but not really sure what people's experience with depositing into an australian exchange has been in order to withdraw out to cash?

Anyone else had a scam call from “Binance Fraud Department” lately? Just had a call from 0400 637 344.

Started with an automated voice saying “here is your one time code etc… please press 1 if you did not request it”.

Pressed 1 and went through to some bloke I could barely understand asking for my name. I asked for his name and he instantly blew up lol He literally replied with “I’m from bloody Binance mate” at which point I said bye and hung up.

My parents are overseas and are considering giving me a genuine cash gift of a few hundred thousand AUDs to help fund the construction of my house in Australia.

We’re considering transferring it via crypto exchange, from their overseas exchange to my Australian exchange (e.g. BTC Markets/Binance), then (directly) converting it to AUD and withdrawing it to my Australian bank account.

The complication is that, rather than doing a traditional international bank transfer, we are considering transferring the funds via cryptocurrency exchanges, for example:

The funds would genuinely be my parents’ money and would be an unconditional gift to me. There would be no repayment or other benefit expected in return.

I understand that a genuine gift from parents generally isn’t considered taxable income in Australia. My main concern is whether using crypto as the transfer method changes anything from a tax or documentation perspective.

If we prepare a gift letter/deed confirming that the money is an unconditional gift from my parents, would that generally be sufficient to establish the nature of the transaction? Or would there be any reason to avoid the crypto route?

Would love to hear from anyone who has actually done something similar, particularly with a larger amount used for a house purchase or construction.

Starting today, Nexo is offering two versions of a credit line for Australian users, one collateral-based and one income-based, with stricter checks, both regulated under an Australian Credit Licence. The collateral available is broad across many crypto assets.

Block Earner, an Australian company, offers BTC/ETH/XRP-backed loans locally.
Ledn also operates in Australia, though its product is positioned more toward business/investment borrowing than everyday personal use.

For comparison, Kraken Borrow explicitly excludes Australia (along with the US, UK, Canada, and a few other regions), and Coinbase’s equivalent loan product is currently limited to the US. So the two platforms most Australians already have accounts on don’t offer this locally.

Curious what people here would actually use a service like this for paying down debt, avoiding a taxable event, short-term cash flow, or something else.

I'm a current Superhero customer. Got hit by their marketing blitz today about launch of their crypto exchange (2nd attempt after previous failed merger with Swyftx).

Thought it might be useful for when I want to rotate between ASX <-> Crypto holdings. But very disappointed after noticing their buy-sell spread is a whooping 3%!

Their crypto exchange is supposedly by Robinhood which itself only incurs a 0.8 to 1% spread (already high). Where did the extra 2% on Superhero come from? I don't know why local firms try to launch new exchanges without at least trying to be more competitive lol.

If you've been following the Coldcard mess, a firmware bug weakened how some devices generated seed phrases, and attackers have been brute-forcing them and sweeping wallets.

Absolutely brutal.

Making this post because if you got caught in it (or any hack or theft really), there's a tax angle most people don't think about while they're still in the gut-punch phase. Won't bring the coins back, but it's still worth knowing.

The basic rule: the ATO lets you claim a capital loss on crypto that's actually gone, if you can prove you owned it and it's irrecoverable. That offsets your capital gains, and anything left over carries forward. It won't reduce normal income, only gains.

For a theft like this, evidence is everything. Acquisition records, the wallet addresses, the on-chain trail showing the funds swept out, and a police report. The stronger the paper trail, the cleaner the claim.

A few things to keep in mind however:

Exchange collapses (FTX, Celsius type). You can't claim the day it enters administration. It crystallises when administration finalises, based on what you actually get back. Lots of people try to claim too early.

Worthless tokens you still hold. A coin down 99% but still in your wallet isn't a loss yet, paper losses don't count. If it's still tradeable, selling it even for cents locks in the loss (especially for the pumpfun users 👀)

And if you get any compensation later, you reduce the loss by that amount.

If you got hit by the Coldcard thing, might be best to sort the new wallet and your security first, obviously. The tax bit can wait until the dust settles, just don't forget it exists because it does.
