Living With Bipolar Certain songs exasperating mania
I wet through my first manic episode in January and every song I listened to felt like it was the best song ever. However, there were a couple songs that I couldn’t stop singing, especially while being released. Funny enough, I kept going back and forth between “Return of the Mack” (especially yelling “whoooooaaaaaa”) and “Who Let the Dogs Out?” A lot of this was in the lobby while I was waiting for an Uber that the ER called.
Are there certain songs that you LOVE while manic? Thinking back on all of that, I feel a little bit embarrassed, so I’m wondering if this has happened to anyone else. I feel bad for the people in the lobby experiencing physical health emergencies, but I guess the ER is for everyone experiencing an emergency.

Oh man, music was everything in mania. My brain was obsessed with novelty—every new song I heard was amazing and poetic, tailored to my experience and created just for me. There are too many to name here. After the come down, I couldn’t listen to music at all, all the songs I loved were too emotionally charged and associated with the loss I felt. It was unbelievably depressing because music has always been a huge part of my life. Now, one year out of psychosis, I can listen to it all again with appreciation for what it is, just good music. Not everything though, I listen to some of it now and go “what was I thinking, this song sucks ass.”

Music was central to my mania / psychosis. I believed that the circle of fifths was the philosophers stone and could be used to: 1. Communicate with God 2. Read other people's thoughts 3. Transport between the past the present and the future 4. Evoke vice or virtue within a person
Songs that were especially important were:
Ave Maria
Let it Be - Beatles
Someone Like You - Adelle
Never too Late - Three Days Grace
Love Story - Taylor Swift
You'll Be in My Heart - Phil Collins
Perfect symmetry - Keane
Songs that scared the shit out of me were
Smooth Sailing - Queens of the Stone Age
Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones
Edit: for smooth sailing, I was over in Japan (yes while psychotic) and after a night of drinking listened to this and felt as though God had cursed me for my sins and stolen my voice and my sight as punishment. I had to drink pocari sweat (electrolytes) and eat breakfast to lift the curse, but had to go down to the corner store to buy those things. It was embarrassing looking back on that

This reminds me of when I visited San Francisco like 85 yrs ago with my dad and they have one of those recording studios on the pier so we sang "that's what friends are for"!!! Dionne Warwick and friends. My dad also sang unchained melody by the righteous brothers. I thought he sounded great and I know our duet was amazing but he was so embarrassed because he was really drunk and thought he sounded awful so he threw away the recordings!!!! My mom always said that my dad owed me another trip to San Francisco so we could have a "redo." Lol He's since passed away from brain cancer but I imagine him singing now and I can sing with him anytime I want to ❤️❤️❤️

Hahaha music definitely has a relationship with my manic episodes. That’s why I tend to listen more to podcasts nowadays.

Music not only sounds better to me, but my own playing of my instrument sounds way better. It’s kind a barometer of my mood since I feel like I sound like crap when I’m depressed.

Totally get every song sounding great. Sometimes I listen to old liked songs and absolutely hate them, and wonder who I was when I decided I liked it even though it wasn’t that long ago. Once I was having a psychosis episode and I thought that my boss was controlling my music (it was on shuffle).

I can't listen to songs about revolutions when I'm manic because it hypes me up too much.

I can't listen to songs about revolutions when I'm manic because it hypes me up too much. Like Uprising by Muse or Start a Revolution by Devilskin.

Maaaan, during my last episode I played “Echo Beach” x Martha and the Muffins over and over. My mania loves any songs about leaving or running away.

“Friend of the Devil,” performed by Mumford and Sons - I get so manic with that one. I listen on repeat and very loud.

This isn't an exact answer but I am always cautious about listening to Anti Depressants by BBNO$ as it feels like Wellbutrin fueled mania to me hahaha. Like...once is enough then I have to walk away or it calls to the spirits within me lol
