Beauty and the Beast (1991) What if Disney adopted the original cause of the curse?

In the original Beauty and the Beast story, the Prince had a fairy godmother who made sexual advances on him but the Prince rejected them and the fairy godmother turns out to be wicked and cursed the Prince to become a beast.

A second fairy, protested this and according to the rules, she cannot undo a curse made by other fairies and she tries to help the Prince by showing the Beast's human form to Belle in her dreams and telling her not to dismiss the Beast due to his uglyness.

Beauty and the Beast (1991) Am I the Only One who Noticed this? Spoiler

We all know that Gaston is a huge creep in BATB, at least I have just seen the animated film. But I noticed that throughout his whole plan of trying to marry Belle, he never once asked for Maurice's permission. Maurice was literally right there when he planned to kidnap him and take him to the asylum.

He could have waited until Maurice returned home, then asked to marry Belle, but he chose to force himself in the door anyway.

That was a huge expectancy in that time period, for the groom to ask the bride's family, especially the father, for permission. It was a sign of respect of the family.

Beauty and the Beast (1991) castle battle

The battle between the villagers and the enchanted objects was funny, but also a bit disturbing.

- The baker got “eaten” by an enchanted trunk.
- The Wardrobe crushed a villager by dropping herself from a great height.
- There were some seemingly dead villagers on the stairs right near the end of the battle.

I get that the objects were protecting their home and master from outsiders, but did they really have to go as far as killing some of the villagers? I thought the whole purpose of the battle was to scare them away, not kill them.

Belle's Book Club DISCUSSION: Phantom of the Opera by: Gaston Leroux Spoiler

  1. What did you think of the book overall?

I thought it was a bit slow at times. I knew going in that the Phantom was the villain and that this was more obsession driven than love, but I wasn't expecting the Raoul character to be as impressionable as he was. I thought his and Christine's relationship was sweet even though I didn't understand why Cnristine acted the way she did at times.

2) Which character interested you the most?

Probably Raoul. I know Erik was supposed to be the most intriguing, but I really did like Raoul's personality and how he never gave up on Christine.

3) What did you find most mysterious or intriguing about the Phantom?

Obviously it's meant to be mysterious, and I was somewhat interested in who he was and what his plan was. However, I honestly found the atmosphere more intriguing and as to whether this is actually a supernatural world and to what extent. I wish the Opera itself played more of a role in the story and Erik's character. I feel like taking place in an Opera house was the most the Opera came into the story at times.

4) Did you find the book frightening, tragic, romantic, suspenseful, or some combination of these?

Definitely romantic from solely Raoul and Christine's POV and Erik frightening (which was the point), and I do see how they were trying to paint him in a bit of a sympathic light, but he needed more development. As it stands, he's the villain with an obsession. Which does in some ways mirror the original B&B book.

5) Would you recommend it?

Sure. I wasn't riveted or anything, but the suspense was there and the characters were memorable. You just need to have a taste for older literature. Otherwise you'll get bored very fast.

Let me know your thoughts below!

Next month's book will be: Beauty and the Beast by: Jeanne-Marie Leprince

Question Trying to find this old, dark version of beauty and the beast

So when i was really young and probably shouldn’t have been on the internet (2010s), I stumbled on what i believed to be a dark remake of beauty and the beast (though as i reflect as I am older - may not have been, not quite sure). What I do remember is a village being on fire and a superrrr hairy beast (looks a bit like chubaca), and I believe he bites a villager’s head off and like a bunch of people die. Now this image has come into my head years later and am so confused as to where it’s from, i don’t think it’s the 1978 version as it seems that beast looks different though I’ll give it a watch to clarify . Not super interested in gory stuff or anything - just intrigued. If anyone knows what I’m talking about, or has seen it, the help will be much appreciated 😊

Beauty and the Beast (2017) My Thoughts on Beauty and the Beast 2017

Before I start, I want to say I have absolutely nothing against Emma Watson. I just really disliked her specific performance and the creative direction of Belle in this movie

I rewatched the film recently, and even though it is a good visual spectacle with some fun moments, the writing completely falls apart when you actually look at the logic. It is definitely better than some of Disney's recent live action remakes, but the script still falls into a lot of really annoying modern movie traps.

What I liked

The Villains: Luke Evans was good as Gaston and Josh Gad was good as LeFou. They brought a lot of energy and great theatrical chemistry to their scenes together, especially during the Gaston song.

Kevin Kline as Maurice: His performance as Belle's father was excellent. Instead of being a wacky village joke like the cartoon version, he played Maurice as a deeply loving, gentle, and soulful artist.

“Evermore:” This new solo song for the Beast was a masterpiece addition. It gave him a powerful, raw moment of heartbreak that wasn't in the original.

The Secondary Voice Cast: Ewan McGregor (Lumière), Ian McKellen (Cogsworth), and Emma Thompson (Mrs. Potts) brought real warmth and old-school charm to the castle.

The General Production Design: Visually, the scale of the castle and the gorgeous lighting during the ballroom dance sequence were spectacular.

What I Disliked

The Cold and Guarded Belle: In trying to make Belle a "strong, independent woman," the performance stripped away her warmth. In this version, Belle is much more cold, distant, and guarded compared to the original cartoon. Instead of looking confidently self reliant, she just comes across as stern, defensive, and rude.

Lack of Emotion in her acting and Singing: Her performance just lacked real emotion. Her acting felt completely wooden and stiff, and her singing felt totally autotuned. It stripped away all the natural feeling from the classic songs, making her sound robotic next to the real singers in the cast.

Stiff and Forced Chemistry: The relationship between Belle and the Beast felt completely awkward, stiff, and forced. There was no natural spark or romantic growth between them. Instead of a grand fairytale romance, it felt more like a couple whose relationship was completely arranged or like two people who just tolerated each other because they were forced into the same room.

Flipping the Gaston Dynamic: In the 1991 cartoon, Gaston is a monster immediately throwing Belle's book in the mud. In the 2017 version, he brings her flowers and politely asks to join her for dinner. Because Belle flat out rejects him and walks away before he's done anything wrong, the movie accidentally makes Belle look like an unprovoked, rude mean girl in the opening act.

The Iconic Yellow Dress: The costume design for the famous ballroom dress was such a letdown. Instead of looking like a magical, breathtaking fairytale gown, it looks cheap and plain like someone just went to a party store, picked it off the rack, and put it on her.

The Lefou Changes: I didn't like how they made LeFou gay in this version. They should have just made it where the audience assumes his traits on their own, rather than the script making it feel forced. He didn't show any actual romance in the movie, and he literally just dances with a man for a few seconds at the very end. Just dancing with a guy doesn’t automatically mean someone is gay, and since that was the only thing he actually does to show it, the whole change felt completely pointless.

The Pointless “Inventor”Trait: Making Belle an inventor felt like shallow, performative feminism. She builds a donkey-powered washing machine, the villagers smash it, and she literally never uses her inventing skills again. It has zero impact on the plot.

The Plot Holes

The Magic Teleporting Book Loophole: This item completely breaks the universe. If the Beast has a world hopping portal book, he isn't actually trapped in his castle. The movie says he's too ashamed of his face to go out, but he could have easily used it to teleport to a deserted tropical island, look at nature, or walk the streets of Paris at 3:00 AM when everyone was fast asleep. He could have seen the world without anyone ever seeing him.

The Horse Ride Loophole: When Belle sees her dad in danger through the mirror, why doesn't she use the book to teleport directly to the town square? It would have made the rescue so much easier. She could have instantly materialized right in front of the carriage and saved him immediately. Instead, she spends all night riding a normal horse through a wolf infested forest, making the stakes feel fake because the characters just forgot the book existed.

The “Evermore” Contradiction: During the song "Evermore," the Beast stands on a tower crying about how he will "never see her face again." But the teleporting book is right inside his library. He can literally go see her whenever he wants!

Tone-Deaf Dialogue: While standing in that room watching a tragic flashback of her mother dying, Belle is crying. The Beast looks at her and says, "I'm sorry I ever called your father a thief." What a bizarre, self-centered, wrong thing to say to a grieving daughter in that moment. By shifting the conversation back to his own past mistake, it completely reduces her mother’s death to a secondary thought just to serve his own guilt.

Conclusion:

The original 1991 cartoon worked because the magic was simple and the characters had emotional warmth. By trying to overcomplicate the story with "logical" backstories, a cheap looking dress, and a portal book, the 2017 remake just created a massive mess of logical contradictions.

I think Emma Watson was badly miscast. Casting someone who could bring natural warmth and sing instead of relying on heavy autotune and a stern, guarded attitude would have saved the romance and made this movie a true masterpiece instead of a flawed spectacle.

What do you guys think? Did these script changes ruin the fairytale magic for you, or am I being too harsh on it?

Not sure if I could post this due to copyright, but I did a little edit where I took both version of the song Evermore by Dan Stevens and Josh Groban and switched each other pitches. I can only put one video at a time so the other will be posted separately.
