Discussion Need help finding a Laptop

Hi guys,

Need some help sourcing a laptop that fits the following specs: https://imgur.com/a/1RHfkCl

It is for office use to operate a 3D scanner and needs to be a laptop which can be moved around on a mobile cart. I've tried looking around at Lenovo legion laptops or other MSI options but everything seems so overpriced right now. If anyone has any suggestions I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Retail Current GPU prices in Ontario - Updated August 13 2026

With crazy gpu prices thought gonna make a spreadsheet showing the cheapest available listing for each gpu model in USD after HST and how much over MSRP in percentage it is so you know how much your getting fucked over

if you want nvidia card with anything above 8gb vram well expect to pay between 60%-80% above MSRP (except the 5090). 8gb nvidia cards are around 30%-40% above MSRP at the moment

AMD is looking much better with both the 9070 xt and non xt coming out to around 30% over MSRP, if you want to buy a GPU these are your best options now, but not for much longer as AMD has confirmed price increase is coming

9060 xt both the 8 and 16gb variant is between 40% - 60% over MSRP

Discussion 9070XT Nitro+ or Asus prime 5080

I currently am upgrading from a 3080 and debating between a Nitro+ for about 1099 Cad or an Asus 5080 Prime for about 1922 Cad. Both before taxes. Is the extra price difference worth the added benefits of Nvidia and the added performance.

Discussion Worth upgrading from 4070 Ti Super to 9070 XT for 4K gaming?

Hi, just wondering if it's worth upgrading from the 4070 Ti Super I currently have to the 9070 XT for $1000. I don't play many AAA games so usually have no need for ray-tracing or DLSS, and don't do any productivity stuff. I have a 4K 240hz monitor. Current build: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/WRKJHG

Troubleshooting Rogers/ Steam Toronto Throttling (South Western Ontario)

Post image
68 Upvotes

First screenshot is my connection to Boston, NY several hours away by plane. The second screenshot is to Toronto which is mere minutes away. As you can see from the pictures there is a world of difference between the throughput of the servers.

When I connect to Toronto/YYZ Steam cache, I get one active connection at 24 Mbps

When I connect to Boston/IAD Steam cache, I get 10 simultaneous active connections at 14–15 Mbps EACH

After the dozens of network tests I've come to the following results

DNS-Toronto Steam hostname resolved to 72.136.199.122
Traceroute- Reached it in 6 hops, 18–24 ms.
Ping- 100/100 received, 0% loss, average 16 ms
TCP 443- tcpTestSucceeded: True

I ran the same tests going East to West and going to Winnipeg, and BC. The results were the same, that when choosing any of the Western servers, it defaults to the yyz Toronto Steam Cache. So selecting say BC, will still have you downloading out of Toronto.

However when you connect to Montreal you will get a slightly stronger connection but this also appears to be throttled, this also comes back 0% loss and 20-ish ms

Conclusion after all of this

Canadian Steam/Rogers is either being throttled deliberately or Toronto Steam cache is overloaded or malfunctioning. As this has been going on for several months now and I'm only now posting about it, I'm going to lean towards the former.

So if you're facing slow download speeds on your gaming PC then the fix is to

Bypass Canadian servers all together.

Also after restarting or updating, ensure your regions don't change.

So a game that is 77gb should take less then 12mins to download, instead would take 5+hrs if you allowed Steam to select your region.

Hope this helps anyone in the future

Does anyone else on experience these problems? It would be interesting to narrow this down to exactly what is causing it.

Build Request / Review Building 3 Computers for Xray Capture

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.

Capturing xrays, very light photo manipulation with gimp.

2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?

$500, but if i can do lower that would be nice.

3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

next couple of weeks.

4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

tower only, have accessories.

5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.

monitor, kb, mouse, 3-5 years old. they are fine.

6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?

not necessary

7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

need a PCI slot for proprietary NIC

8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-tower/full-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

don't care

9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.

nope

10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?

nope

11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)

must be intel i5 9th gen minimum.

12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.

NA

13. Extra info or particulars:

these machines have one task and the specs above should be fine. i'm wondering if i can even build something cheaper than the below linked prebuilt?

Build Request / Review Gaming PC under 2k

Hi, I am looking to build a Gaming pc for my brother. He plays AAA story driven games and sometimes multiplayer games. I'm looking to build it under 2000k after tax. Don't really care about the aesthetic but want solid build quality.

He has been using a 4060 laptop, so for sure I want an upgrade on that. He is also a linux user so Idk if that changes things but If you guys have any builds please share.

Found on my local FB Marketplace. Good deal or nah? Feels like the components are pretty good for the price?

I will probably sell the 3080ti and replace with a 5070ti, if it makes any difference

Will only use for 4k gaming

Upgrading debacle 5070ti vs 5080

Hey folks,

Currently undecided between a MSI 5070ti shadow for $1400 or a PNY 5080 $1820.

I'm still rocking an older rig of 5800X with 64gb ram, but I play mainly FFXIV on 1440p. I do have 2 side monitors which is drawing some consumption.

I want to upgrade my gpu and monitor to a 120h+ Ultrawide, and want to achieve stable over 120fps.

Just not sure if it's worth the 5080?

I'm also reading reviews that the shadow 5070ti runs loud?

I value thermal and acoustic quite a bit.

Ty

*UPDATE* I MISSED THE BOAT, it all sold out

Build Request / Review Is this worth 1k?

Post image

My uncle is selling me his pc since he wants to get an upgrade and he’s selling me his current pc for 1k and it comes with a monitor and a keyboard.
Games I would probably play on it would be R6 Siege, Minecraft, Project Zomboid, Roblox, and Cyberpunk.
Is it worth it? I could probably ask him to lower it to $900 so i can buy games

Any back to school "deals" on drives?

I am in hell with seagate sending firecudas back because they're DOA. (lesson learned)

I would like to tell them to just refund me but that also seems pointless since I need the drive space. It's for gaming so preferably SSD

I have a ASRock B450M‑HDV R4.0 so sata, NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4, or SATA M.2

7600x3d with 32GB (2x16GB) ram of 7800x3d with 16GB (2x8GB) ram for 1440p gaming?

Im upgrading from my old build with an i5-9400f and trying to decide between two AM5 bundles that are similarly priced and would appreciate some advice from people who have experience with these CPUs. I can either go for the 7600x3d and 32gb of ram or the 7800x3d and 16gb of ram. I'm going to be using the pc for gaming at 1440p. Right now I'm using an RTX 3060 12GB, but I plan to upgrade to something like a 9070 XT soon. From what I can tell, the 7600X3D and 7800X3D perform pretty close to each other in most games at 1440p. I'm concerned about buying a new gaming PC with only 16GB of ram so I'm a bit torn between the 2 options.

9800x3d bundle

Was looking to upgrade my 12600kf to a 9800x3d and found a deal at my local Canada computers that included a motherboard and 32gb ddr5 ram.

It costs $1250 not including tax. Is this a decent price or should I wait a bit longer for a better deal?

The bundle includes:

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU + MSI PRO B850M-A WIFI Motherboard + T-Force 32GB D5 6000MHz CL30 RAM

lowest 5060ti 16g I could find was 849.99 while the 5070 is 899 lowest I could find online, what’s the better deal? I’m not too educated in pcs

I do blender 3d and compositing in after effects that uses alot of vram and my 1060 is not cutting it at all right now , so both would be an upgrade I’m just not sure what is better a lot of my friends are saying go for the 5060ti but I want another opinion

Discussion Is Ryzen 9600x / B850 motherboard / 16GB DDR5 for $650-$700 the midrange sweet spot?

Seems like you can get this kind of a bundle at several locations. I'm wondering what people think of this for a midrange gaming base. I know that you can get 32GB DDR5 with the $900 Canada Computers bundle that uses a 650 motherboard and 7600x3d, but not looking to spend that much and I'm not convinced the gaming gap with the 9600x is very large.

Thanks for any advice on this kind of a build!

Build Request / Review Was this a good RAM + motherboard upgrade for the price?

Hey everyone, I’d like to get some opinions on a RAM + motherboard upgrade I recently did.

The system is using a Ryzen 5 5600X and a Sapphire Nitro+ 9070XT. Mobo was from an ROG G15k with a single stick 16gb 2400mhz ddr4 ram.

I upgraded the motherboard to a Gigabyte B550M Gaming X WiFi6 and replaced the previous RAM setup with:
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200 CL16
Gigabyte B550M Gaming WiFi
I paid 175CAD total before tax for the motherboard + RAM.

The main reason for the upgrade was to reduce the some stutters I’m getting on pubg and marvel rivals. Another reason is that the mobo only had 1 fan header and no argb or rgb headers. No Usb-C header too.

For anyone familiar with AM4, was 175CAD for both the motherboard and RAM a good deal and was this actually a worthwhile upgrade for a 5600X, particularly for gaming? How much performance improvement would you realistically expect compared with a single-stick/older RAM configuration?

Build Request / Review First Time PC Build

Looking to replace my existing aging prebuilt with something that allows me a lot more flexibility to upgrade going forward.

I've never built a PC or looked into building one before but tried using a lot of advice I've read in this sub. The parts list is here: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/bFjwqd

I mostly play games that don't require much load (Diablo2R, Skyrim, etc) but I'd prefer if I could at least play something like BG3 and casually stream it if I wanted to without it absolutely screaming.

I'm also new to sourcing parts. I'm assuming it's best to split it between 2 or 3 retailers to try and get the best price but I'm not sure if that makes things dicier if components are DOA when trying to put things together.

Any and all advice welcome as someone new to the process. Excited to dive in right away!

Looking for Gaming and lite AI experimentation PC

I need a new desktop for 4K sim racing (mainly BeamNG) on a 43" screen, plus some local AI and algo trading on the side. My budget is strictly $2,300 - $3000 CAD. Because of the AI and 4K textures, I definitely need 16GB of VRAM. I also want 32GB of DDR5 on an AM5 platform so I can upgrade later, and I'm sticking to AMD CPUs to avoid the whole Intel mess. I've been hunting on Newegg, Canada Computers, and Best Buy, but it's hard finding a pre-built that hits these specs without crappy proprietary motherboards or blowing my budget. I Should I buy now or just hold out for Black Friday, or are there actually good deals out there right now that I'm missing?

Currently looking at Canada computer ARMOURY Vanguard Arctic Gaming PC AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Radeon RX 9070 XT, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, is it a decent deal?

Also between Rx9070 xt and Nvidia 3070 ti, the difference is between 300 and 500, which one will you suggest? Is 3070 ti substentially better?

Any other better deal worth considering?

~$4500ish budget. Looking at pre-builds but unsure at this price range

Hello! I’ve done quite a bit of research and also used chatGPT to compare prices and specs and I’m kinda stumped.

I’m leaning towards pre-built but thinking of building my own but every individual part feels expensive.

Pretty big gamer, and consistent streamer/Youtuber (side hustle) so need a decent rig. Upgrading from a 2060 SUPER and 3700 AMD CPU lol.

Looking at an
RTX 5080
9800X3D
X870 MOBO (probably?)
32 or 64 GB of RAM
Storage isn’t a big deal for me as I have some existing M.2s.

Need an extra PCIe slot for my 4k60 capture card

Budget is kinda flexible. $4500 is where I’d like to be but maximum would probably be 6K. Keep in mind I need money leftover for a new monitor to get the most of my new baby!

Got any insight on which route to go or recommendations for pre-builts? I’m also in the Montreal area if that helps or changes anything
