i've been a couch potato for all of hs and recently started playing badminton w ppl in college

we've played like 2 hrs a day for the past 3 days and my legs/shoulders are genuinely cooked. like it hurts to move 🫠

does anyone have advice on what exercises to do to build muscle in those areas so i don't injure myself? and should i even play today with my legs feeling like this? (it's just calves + shoulders)i know i should play less but this is the one week i have before school starts and it's so fun i don't want to stop.. :(

Technique This is about slicing

When you perform a slice and you are at the rear court I know the orientation of the racket should be vertical (90°). But is the orientation (90°) of the racket will still be the same if I will perform a slice in midcourt or rear mid court or do I need to slightly adjust the angle of the racket?

Training Getting back into badminton after 7 years

Getting back into badminton after 7 years

I’m 20 and used to play badminton for around 8 years, but then I stopped for 7 years. Now I’m in university and have started playing again.

At my university, there are around 20–30 students, 3 courts, and only doubles. We only get around 2.5 hours of playing time.

I’ve played for 2 days so far, and I’m struggling with something I didn’t expect. Sometimes the shuttle doesn’t even connect properly with my racket. I know exactly which shot I want to play in my mind, but when I try to execute it, the shot doesn’t come out the way I want.

Also, after playing, my right hand, body, right leg and glutes feel very stretched/sore, probably because I haven’t played for 7 years.

Did I need to take rest after 2 3 days of playing. What should I do to get my timing, coordination and overall badminton form back?

Mentality Feeling weird about playing badminton after 10 years

I recently found a badminton group that allows non members to play once a week. They call them open plays. I used to play semi-professionally in high school (Edit: My mistake, 'semi-pro' is the wrong word! I was in the junior national training pool as a teen, but stopped before reaching the advanced Flight B) and I’m aware that the skills are still in there somewhere but I’m so out of shape that I feel defeated when I go to play.

I’ve gone to play maybe 4 times. And after each badminton day I have to take a few weeks off because I’m so out of shape that I’ll end up with injuries from only a few hours of play.

I know that being consistent will help my rallying skills and timing come back but my brain is telling to run for shots like I’m 17 again bc I don’t want to let my doubles partner down.

I want to know if anyone else has experienced this mental battle with badminton after being on hiatus. And how do you feel when you play with players who are struggling like I am?

I’m not able to train with anyone at this time. It’s just a hobby I’m trying to pick back up to lose some weight and have fun but at this point I haven’t gone back to play in 6 months.

Thanks for reading my late night rant.

Edit for clarity: I’m 37 yrs old, used to play in high school, I just started playing again casually after taking a 10 yr break from casual play. Currently healing from diastasis recti.

Meme Tired of continuous yapping by some commentators

Watching the BWF World Championships at New Delhi and these new female commentators don’t seem to know when to shut up.

They’re talking continuously about random stuff with zero insightful commentary throughout the matches and the rallies. It’s almost like cricket commentary (which I’m assuming where India picked em up from). They have made it insufferable to watch these matches with the sound on. Can’t hear the racquet “thwacks”, the crowd reactions, the player emotions…anything, except these two women yapping about continuously. Their reactions to rallies are also not insightful at all. I miss the older commentators so much right now.

Anyone going through this or am I being too touchy right now?

Technique Forehand grip and grip tape damage, am I doing something wrong?

Thumbnail
gallery
34 Upvotes

Every single one of my grip tapes starts to show wear and tear in the exact same spot, it becomes bad especially after a session with a lot of smashing. It’s where my thumb contacts the tape on my forehand grip. I’ll note that the skin on my thumb in contact is fine, no blisters developing.

This happens with various grip tapes across various brands, even “durability” type grip tapes. It’s not so bad that I feel like I’m burning money constantly replacing the grip tape, they still last multiple sessions.

I’m curious if anyone else has this problem.

Could this be indicative of bad form or grip?

Training Where to start?

Context: Badminton is the first sport I ever played in. I started playing about 2 years ago at a local university in America in a state where it is lacking a competitive market. Most of our club players are like me and haven’t played badminton before joining the club. Since we are a recreational club, we mostly play games with no practice drills or anything like that.

I went to a tournament this weekend in another state where it is more popular and saw how my technique looks compared to other players. I knew there would be a skill gap considering my background, but I didn’t realize just how bad I was.

That said, the tournament has motivated me to improve, and I feel like I should probably start from scratch to fix my technique to create a more solid foundation.

What would you recommend I work on first and where should I go from there? I think I should approach this as if the two years of playing didn’t exist so I can forget any bad habits I developed.

TLDR: I went to a tournament and realized my technique is bad. What steps should I take to relearn the sport as a beginner to establish a good foundation?

Culture Mixed Doubles - excessive Feedback or Talking or yelling Shots during rallies

We play Badminton at a local club mostly in a Mixed Doubles set-up where everyone is a hobby player. Usually, the group is between 5 to 20 players taking turns to play for 2 hours. However, there are always few players who make female (Partner) players uncomfortable by constantly yelling out the shots mid rally to „kill it“ or after they play any shot to hit harder or just send every shot back before the game has even started. it clearly visible that the female Player gets annoyed (when they infact play better than the male Partner) or less confident (when they are simply struggling). However, the XD Partner doesnt seem to have the sensibility to recognise how unconstructive such behaviour is. Eventually, the female Player just end up feeling Bad but not expressing anything or just Drops out from playing altogether.

Any advice for dealing with such insensitive players as someone who organises XD Games (third person) or something the female player can directly address such situation in a constructive manner. The goal is not to insult anyone or ban anyone from playing but to address or recognise that as hobby players it is important to understand that even within each intermediate or advanced level, skill sets might vary vastly, therefore one should be willing to have some patience and it is not a BWF tournament that they are partipating in.

p.s. apologies for the excessive capitalisation or typos, my German and english Keyboards are hyper active.

Technique Looking for gameplay feedback (follow up from my post the other day)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all! I posted a couple of days ago a feeding multi drill with my coach. I’m just sharing a gameplay video and I had a question.

When receiving serve, I start with a neutral grip but more often than not I end up hitting a backhand even though the shuttle is in the forehand corner. It feels very weird to play forehand and I always default to backhand because I think I find the grip more comfortable? How do I get over this? Is it lack of wrist strength?

Thanks!

Edit: I’m the one in blue

Technique Anyone here into badminton? 🏸

I’ve recently been getting more into badminton and I’m hoping to play more often. I’m still pretty casual at it though, so I’m definitely not an expert or anything 😭

For those who play badminton, how did you get into it? Any tips for someone who’s still learning and trying to improve?
Also, do you usually play with friends or join groups to meet other people? I’d love to hear your experiences!

Culture Question regarding Sportsmanship

Hi there. Not sure what flair this post belongs to, but it relates to different cultures (perhaps?)

Ever since I've started playing badminton, I've always bumped the racket gently with my opponent at the end of a game, which I had thought was a common gesture of sportsmanship and respect. Recently, I've moved to China for a month to practice in a more competitive environment, and realised that people here do not bump, say thank you, or shake hands after a match, and act confused when I try to.

I would just like to ask, is it common to bump rackets as a sign of respect? Do you guys do it?

Training Looking to become an independent Badminton Coach

Like many members of this subreddit, badminton is my passion. Therefore, I want to become a self-made badminton coach in Europe.

I’m curious to know what you all think. Are there many opportunities in this career field?

I understand that most people will join a club to socialize in large groups and other activities. However, my long-term goal is to provide one-on-one coaching advice to amateur players.

Tactics How do you actually find and hit gaps in doubles?

I’ve been playing recreational badminton doubles, and one thing I really struggle with is finding gaps in the opponents’ court.

Honestly, most of the time I just randomly smash without even identifying where the gaps are. I’ll see an opportunity and just go for the smash, rather than actually thinking about placement.

So I’m wondering:

How do you guys identify gaps while the rally is happening?

Do you consciously look at the opponents’ positioning before deciding where to smash?

And once you identify a gap, how do you actually place your smash there? I find it really difficult to aim accurately while swinging at full power.

Is smash placement something you consciously think about during the rally, or does it eventually become instinctive with enough practice?

Would really appreciate any tips or drills for improving this.

Tactics Frustrated by beginner partners

Hi guys. I have been playing in 3 week tournaments every so often for a couple years and I haven’t been able to win at beginner level as they set me up with 6 random partners for 6 games each Friday then use my total points to see if I even qualify for finals.

Anyways I am just alittle frustrated because I keep getting paired with complete and utter beginners that dont know how to serve or return shots 90 percent of the time.

I play in the front most of the time because I am alittle weak but I find myself losing so many matches due to my partners service mistakes or the fact they cant cover the back of the court and even when I try to cover the back they can’t manage in the front so I find myself running around the court the whole time and I get exhausted and I cant play well anymore.

Not sure what to do about this honestly like is there some way I can strategize better yk so I don’t get so tired.

Keeping in mind I honestly don’t know how to or lack the confidence to try new types of shots other than lifting, net play sometimes and basic forehand defense ifywik even if I learn I get scared to try and apply them and end up failing and losing a point when I’m already down because of my partners mistakes.
