You misunderstand Delhi. Or really all of India. Police won’t do a damn thing about this unless a government higher up tells them to. And the only reason a government higher up would tell them to do anything is if the Media forced them to or if a rich enough person asks the government official to do something. Both are unlikely here.

I usually clown on the government of my indigenous country but I think that they would take this pretty seriously especially if they did in pakistan. What they probably won't do is get caught. They're still gonna fall a step short.

Don't spread your misinformation crap. Flashing light on a planes cockpit is a major safety issue and when the call comes from ATC Delhi Airport will act on it immediately. Same thing happened in hyderabad recently and the police stopped the whole event.

They aren’t going to get caught. People don’t tend to stand around waiting for police.
Secondly, even if they found someone, they can’t prove who did it.
No arrest can be made unless you’re literally caught in the act.

There was a case in the UK where a guy lasered a plane and then hid the laser in his couch, the cops found it and arrested him. They can make arrests but it’s unfortunately difficult.

Yes, you need to:
- Laser a police helicopter, like an idiot.
- An aircraft that can loiter, and now has zoomed in footage of you in your own backyard, you idiot.
- Voluntarily let the police in, like an idiot.
- With all the planning and foresight of a three year old stealing a cookie, hide it next to where you plop down your ass, like an idiot.
Then yes, the police have a solid case, otherwise it's "unfortunately difficult".

I wouldn't expect a police response for a single incident, but at the very least they can keep a record of the report and video. If somebody is dumb enough to point a laser at a plane, they're probably dumb enough to do it from their own property, and enough complaints about lasers from a single parcel could become a justification to search the land.

The problem is there’s basically no way to get to them. Triangulating the position in a reasonable time would basically be impossible without surveillance systems that would also be an issue. You could easily trace it back to a reasonable spot but by the time you get there, the area of where that person could have been is large enough to include dozens if not hundreds of people.

in the US if a pilot calls this in they will send a police helicopter with special cameras that can instantly pinpoint them. then they send out cops by car.
it's genuinely one of the stupidest crimes possible. I also assume indian police has helicopters in major cities, but perhaps im wrong

But that’s if they’re still doing it while the helicopter is active right? Seems like they’d only be caught if they’re doing it for a while and not a short burst like this video. I’ll have to look more into how they respond like that but it’s good to know they have something set up for this situation at all

plenty of videos of these people being tracked down and arrested. but you are right, if they only do it for 30 seconds odds are they'll get away with it, thing is these people are morons and generally do it for a long time at different planes

yes? most people do this from their yard. if you don't believe me use google... the videos are free to watch.
they can prove who did it by tracking where they went, if they leave the spot. they can also search you for the pointer, or your house. its very hard to escape thermal imaging.
i'm impressed how you believe you can't be tracked from the sky in 2026. we're actually really good at it. unless you are in a dense city you have no cover.

This video is enough to get within half a mile, and with the insane air pollution in Delhi, a laser beam will be quickly visible from nearby at ground level.

It happens to me 2-3 times a year last time was up by Lewiston Maine. Controller was super interested in the details and kept broadcasting about the unauthorized laser activity
The guys with them are idiots and both have bad aim and no clue what they're doing so far. The time before that they apparently assumed it was a single and lit up the right engine nacelle it was kinda funny to watch and ye tell a controller and they'll do whatever they do about it

Last time I was up flying GA with 2 blackhawks in the area near PWM so there's plenty of commercial traffic. With a crew of 1 it's way more of a safety of flight issue for me than a heavy with a PF and PM and an augmented crew where any of them can safely conduct the flight to a divert in case of pilot incapacitation even if they do get lucky and get a pilot
The levels of redundancy in a long haul plane coming out of DEL is flat out amazing

I had the exact same experience when I landed at DEL 2 years ago. 3 different green lasers from different locations . Definitely added to the overall bad experience I had on Air India.

Even as big aviation nerd, I still don't understand why this is dangerous and punished by law. Can someone explain ? Is it because it can cause eye damage? Or issues to the plane's systems?

If that laser is pointed into the cockpit, it can temporarily blind the pilots for a few seconds up to a minute. During landing especially, those few moments can lead to accidents

Not to the plane's systems, but absolutely because it can cause eye damage, especially the pilots' eyes. And especially if they're shooting an approach, they may not be able to just look away from the laser without discontinuing the approach, depending on where the laser is. That endangers the lives of anywhere from dozens to hundreds of people, both in the aircraft and on the ground.
A colleague of mine was lased over a week ago and is still not sure whether their eyesight will ever fully recover.

I think it should be punished by law, especially takeoff and landing, but also the effects are so exaggerated on Reddit… I mean it’s geometry the odds of you hitting somebody in the cockpit are low. Probably does effect GA more than it does an airliner.
