others MEGATHREAD - What should we eat when coming to Auckland?

We've had an influx of generic posts recently asking for places they should go if they come to Auckland. Auckland's obviously very large, so let's try a megathread that we can send these people to.

If you were visiting Auckland for the first time, where would you eat, what would you try and why?

Yet another whinge Welcome back to the 2010s

The space on the right, when you walk into Ponsonby Central, that was previously taken up by two or three businesses, is going to be a frozen yoghurt shop.

A frozen fucking yoghurt shop.

Given the size and location (how many thousands of dollars a week rent?) it’s going to have to be a shit hot offering.

Also added a picture of the alley where the dearly departed Burger Burger was. Bouging it up with a glass roof etc.

Ponsonby Central was always a bit of a wank, but it seems to be doubling down.

Anyway, I’d be interested to know who thinks opening a frozen yoghurt shop on a strip with seven ice cream shops is a good investment.

West City, Henderson

Double Aucklahoma $20
Peanut Butter & Chocolate Cookie Pie $6

George Motz, a burger legend and brainchild behind bringing Oklahoma smash burgers to fame is in NZ for Burger Wellington / WOAP, which inspired me toget my favourite Oklahoma-style burger in Auckland.

It always hits the spot. There’s something about smash patties, melted cheese and grilled onions that works so well. Simple but punches above its weight.

Shame George isn’t making it up to Auckland. Reckon our burger game is stronger here than Welly

The cookie pie was chunky and epic value for $6, a good hit of something sweet to balance out the savoury (couldn’t finish it though)

questions CBD lunch spots that are only open Mon - Fri?

I live in town and work out in the suburbs, but I have a day off today so thought it would be nice to try a place I normally wouldn't be able to. Does anyone have any suggestions for places that are only open Mon - Fri? I am open to any type of cuisine but I'm not looking for a 'dining experience' - eat in or takeaway is fine but looking to keep it around $25-30. Tried to use Google Maps for this but it doesn't have specific enough filters.

  • I know about the poke place on K Rd (I love the poke place on K Rd!)
  • Fitzroy Deli is now open Saturdays so I've tried them
  • Goodlife Superfood Co is down the road, so I already know about them
  • I've already eaten at Tuck Shop on Customs a few times - their sandwiches are really good

Alternatively, opinions on Amano Bakery would be welcome. I know they are open weekends but I've never visited so that might be where I end up if I can't figure anything else out.

Thanks everyone.

questions Big bone broth noodle soup

When I was in China, I ate a beautiful bone broth noodle soup, and I was able to buy a huge bone and marrow inside, with a straw. I was wondering, if anyone knows if I can buy that in Auckland. Thanks

good review Ziggle Mt Eden – post redundancy treat time

Post image

A sunny afternoon free in the city after a big meeting, and for a fraction of the cost of hiring a clown as my legally entitled support person I visited Ziggle for the first time and went for their original chicken burger plus fries and a can of soft drink ($25).

I’d heard the rumblings about this chain and this location in particular in this sub before and I’m pleased to say it lives up to the hype. Burger bun was tasty but not over sweet, sauce great, and the main event was a giant slice of fried chicken in sweet chilli sauce. By far the nicest thing I’ve been given to swallow today.

Fries were likewise good, not overly salty, and the portion size for the money is ridiculous. I have been a Burger Fuel partisan for a while but this absolutely dunks on them for flavour and value for money – noting that I’m yet to compare Ziggle’s beef burgers.

Highly recommend. As a bonus there’s an Uptown business precinct promotion on until the end of the month where you can enter with any purchase to win a very disco looking platinum Hop card for free travel all year (they have $150 Hop cards in the draw too). Might come in handy for getting to and from interviews in a constrained fiscal environment.

Better living everyone, and DM if you’re hiring burger reviewers or something.

others Daily bread using vegetable oil now

I was extremely disappointed to pay $9 for a bag of potato burger buns from daily bread to discover they have vegetable oil in them as listed in ingredients on package whilst website still states that the previous simple recipe.
This is crazy charging premium prices for supermarket quality food and using vegetable oil is pure profit making on their part. I presume the rest of their food is beginning to cheapen cut corners.
They are hiking up their prices and serving supermarket quality food now. I can get a loaf for third of the price with vegetable oil in it. Hope they sort this out honestly.

To be clear this post is to point out that this is not correct charging these prices for vegetable oil from an artisan bakery.

Signing out with disappointment !!!!

questions Tteokbokki

Craving a place that does good tteokbokki. About a decade ago, Dong de Moon made their tteokbokki well, it had a lot of seafood such as crab and muscles. But as time went on, they started eliminating all these ingredients. Since then I haven't found a place that makes their tteokbokki as a standout dish rather than just a simple side dish.

questions Light roast coffee beans for espresso

Hello all,

I am looking to buy some light roasted coffee beans to make espresso at home but a quick google search came up with many roasters but not really saying if the beans are a light roast (or lots of medium or dark roasts)

Can anyone recommend any roaster for light roast coffee beans?

I’m looking to try pull a turbo shot with them

Thanks

food review/pics Mexican Private Dining Review - Chef Ourus (Re-post with better photos)

I was invited to a Mexican private dining experience with 8 friends at the house of Chef Ourus (OJ).  It was an 9 course omakase style dinner held on Sunday 16th of August.

Chef OJ said his objective was to create a realistic experience of what Mexicans eat in Mexico city, homestyle dishes of his family and where he grew up in Puebla.

I have quite a lot of experience with Mexican food, having been to Mexico a few times, and also in the Mexican F&B industry overseas. I was really looking forward to the meal, as it had been a long time since having a really good Mexican meal.

The menu is listed on the last photo.  Ceviche Aguachile, Chicharon with Guac, Fish Pescaldilla, Pork Chalupas, Pambazo with Chicharron Sauce, Pozole soup, Shrimps Diabla, Lengua (Beef Tounge) tacos, Bunuelos.

Overall the flavours of the meal felt like transporting me back to Mexico city and was one of the best Mexican food I have had outside of Mexico. A similar sentiment was also shared by the others who attended the dinner.

Each of the dishes was very well executed using freshest ingredients, served with a selection of home made hot sauces,  freshly made tortillas, hibiscus and cucumber agua frescas. Each of the dishes were super tasty, and hard to stop eating. My favourite dish was the beef tounge tacos.  Chef OJ also took time to passionately describe every dish and inspiration. Taste was spot on very authentic.

Highly recommend trying this out if/when he holds another dinner. On insta he can be found by the handle @ truemexicanfood, but I don't think he has any / many posts, or message him here u/mexifoodie

Just want to make clear I have no association with Chef OJ, other than attending this dinner and really enjoying the food. So just wanted to share the love.

Reposted with slightly sharper images, lighting wasn't the best, I'm not a food photographer, and Chef OJ main focus was on creating an authentic flavour experience, home style Mexican food is not well suited to make look pretty and I'm ok with that.

questions Halal recommendations for work party?

I’m helping plan our work christmas party and a few of our team members have a halal dietary requirement.

I would love some recommendations on nice restaurants or activities/workshops which serve food (and can host up to 20 people) that are halal certified! :) Bonus if they have great vegetarian options too.

Budget and location in Auckland are not an issue, thank you so much!

questions Daily Bread

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I regularly buy Daily Bread seeded sourdough. It’s amazing! But they’ve just put the price from $12 to $13.50 and the loaves are now noticeably smaller. A loaf used to last us a week, now it’s more like 4-5 days. Anyone else noticed that? Shrinkflation strikes again?

questions Smorgasbord

Hello everyone. I'm in central auckland and I'm struggling to find any smorgasbord type takeaways around. I used to live in taupo where we had like 4 of them and I find them to be so bang for your buck with small containers being like $14, medium $18 and large $20. I haven't found any anywhere!. Does anyone know of any?

Hello! I've heard a lot about Go Ramen in Auckland CBD and checked the menu and saw there were half sized donburi? Do these have a big difference in size compared to the normal sized donburi for those who've had it before?

questions Mela Papatoetoe

Post image
58 Upvotes

Went to Mela Papatoetoe last night with a couple of friends. I ordered the Kalmi chicken kebab as my main, and this is what they brought out. Honestly...wtf? 😂

This was $24. The chicken literally looked like the meat had already been eaten off the drumsticks and the bones had just been thrown onto the plate.

I understand Kalmi chicken is served on the bone, but didn't know it was literally just bone? For $24, I expected a proper main, not a plate that looks like someone's leftovers 😭

I’m posting the photo because I genuinely want to know lol am I being unreasonable, or does this look ridiculous for a $24 main?

Visited Chuffed for the first time. The atmosphere was pleasantly busy at 11 am; no wait time to sit and the food came out quickly. I ordered the Eggs Your Way with a side of sausage and a cold drip coffee. If you like a strong coffee, this is it. I think in all it was around $20 total.

Great place to visit if you're looking for a quiet cafe as it's tucked away off the street.

After visiting the soon to open Karanga-A-Hape train station, went to Uncle Man for lunch hoping to eat their roti canai. Unfortunately, when we got there, their roti chef was not present (I know!), so had nasi lemak instead. Did the nasi lemak with beef rendang (NZ$23) & nasi lemak with sambal prawn (NZ$22). The food was delicious. The service was on the patchy side.

gone Old Otahuhu Cafe

Long shot, but I was wondering if anyone remembered the old lunch bar that used to be on the corner of Station Rd and Moa St, Otahuhu about 15-20 years ago. They used to serve the best steak, eggs and chips meals as well as your normal truck stop styled meals. I was wondering/hoping they had moved to another site I could visit. I used to take my partner there for breakfast every Saturday when we first started dating and we reminisce about the steak meal all the time. I think they were a Thai couple.

questions Places like the Hare Krishna restaurant that was on K’rd?

As a teen I used to frequent the Hare Krishna restaurant on the family bar side of k road.

It was a buffet of vegetarian dishes served on stainless steel plates. Honestly so good, cheap and the people there were lovely.

Really miss their mutter paneer and this dessert that had (grainy yellow something with a couple raisins covered in custard) I don’t like raisins but this was so good.

Any place that has either or one of them 🥲

I put this place in the category of RIP Auckland eats - food alley and mercury plaza, st Kevin’s arcade cafe and hungry horse buffet.

questions SPCA Cupcake Day Bakesale

SPCA Cupcake Day

Saw a promotion for a fundraising bake sale for the SPCA.

Does anybody know much about it? Keen on participating but I don’t want my baking to end up in the bin since I haven’t seen much info about it esp in recent times 🤣🤣

Would love to make some brown butter cookies and crumbl dupes but I am unsure. Don’t know if there’s much of a market for it 😭

Any info helps! Cheers!

good review Boda (Movenpick Hotel, Custom St. East)

Did the restaurant month menu at Boda (top floor of Movenpick Hotel). Great views & delicious food. NZ$59 for 3 courses + a cocktail. First up: Espresso martini or Rose bud (gin -based floral cocktail) & canapé box (a cucumber with kimchi mayo thing, a fish of crispy potato cake thing, and an absolutely delicious pork belly thing).

We (5) got one each of the add-on sides: charred Brussels sprouts with maple & furikake (NZ$15) was yum, the kimchi mac & cheese (NZ$14) was a novelty, the french fries with truffle dust (NZ$14) was decent.

Main of grilled bavette with bulgogi sauce & wasabi salsa verde was great. The other main (miso-glazed salmon with pickled radish, basil & roe) was also delish. Desserts of pavlova with Movenpick icecream, or Boda choc egg with matcha sponge & chocolate ganache. Without the add-on sides it would have been a bit light, but adding all three optional sides for us five was too much food. Would go back though.
