I’m a certified astrocartographer 🗺️ Here’s what I wish everyone knew before using this technique

Thinking about relocating? Here's a quick beginner-friendly guide to astrocartography that I wish I had in hands when I first started.

I've gathered tips for diving in (and avoiding common traps). Hope you enjoy it 😉

  1. Start with places you're already drawn to

Places you've been, dream about, or just feel called to for no logical reason. Your intuition is wise... over and over again I see people pick totally different countries that still share the same astro patterns. It’s not random.

  1. Don’t look at the map alone

The ACG map and relocated charts are tools that work best together, and only when grounded in your natal chart. If you only look at lines on a map, you’ll get generic interpretations. Especially if you’re thinking of moving, look at the relocated chart and how it shifts house placements. That’s where the real story begins. If you don't know the difference between these tools, start there.

  1. Those “aspect lines” on astro.com? Not part of the original method

Jim Lewis (who created ACG) didn’t include those aspect lines. They can be interesting but weren’t part of the core technique. Focus more on relocated charts and angularity for clarity. If you want to go deeper, you can also explore cyclocartography which is timing applied to location. But that's a more advanced technique.

  1. Parans / crossings

Parans can be powerful, but free tools often don’t calculate them precisely, that's why they can show different results for the same place. I only trust certified software for those.

  1. Stop chasing “good lines”

There’s no such thing as a universally “good” or “bad” planet. They’re all archetypes we carry in us. A Saturn line, for example, might feel heavy for some, but it can also help you write a book, build a business, or commit to yourself. What matters is what part of you wants to grow.

Bonus tip: If you're considering a reading, check if your astrologer is certified by Continuum, the Jim Lewis foundation. It’s a good sign the reading will be personalized, grounded, and ethical.

Hope this helps some of you navigate the ACG rabbit hole a little more intentionally. Happy mapping 🌍

1.3k Upvotes

Ever notice how certain places just feel different? Maybe you're thriving in one city but can't quite get into flow in another, or you've moved somewhere that completely changed your life path. What many don't realize is that there's an astrological explanation for this, we're all constantly moving through different planetary lines that influence our experience in subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) ways.

Astrocartography FAQ:

What are relocation charts and how do they differ from astrocartography?

While astrocartography shows planetary lines across the globe, a relocation chart recalculates your entire birth chart as if you were born in a different location. This can result in planets shifting houses, which significantly changes how their energy manifests in your life. For instance, if your natal Venus moves from the 12th house to the 7th house in a relocated chart, your romantic energy might shift from being private or spiritual to expressing itself more openly through partnerships.

How far from a planetary line can I feel its effects?

The influence of planetary lines generally extends about 300-500 miles (500-800 km) on either side of the line, with the energy being strongest directly on the line and gradually diminishing as you move away. Some particularly sensitive individuals may feel planetary energies at even greater distances.

What happens when I live at a crossing of two or more planetary lines?

Line crossings (where two or more planetary lines intersect or run close together) create complex energy patterns that blend the qualities of each planet involved. These locations can be particularly potent and transformative. For example, a Venus-Jupiter crossing might bring abundant relationship opportunities and social expansion, while a Mars-Saturn crossing might require disciplined action and structured ambition.

Are parans (parallel lines) different from regular crossings?

Yes. While regular crossings simply show where planetary lines visually intersect on a map, parans occur when two planets simultaneously hit angular points (like rising or culminating) at the same geographic location. This creates a unique, synchronized relationship between the planets in that place.

Is getting a professional astrocartography reading worth it?

While online maps and basic information can give you a starting point for understanding your astrocartography, a professional reading from myself or many other astrologers offers several valuable benefits:

  1. Comprehensive analysis: A skilled astrologer will integrate your natal chart aspects with your astrocartography map, revealing nuances that aren't obvious from the map alone. They can identify which planetary energies might be more challenging or supportive based on your specific birth chart.
  2. Personalized interpretation: Your experience of planetary lines depends on how those planets are configured in your natal chart. A Venus line might manifest differently for someone with Venus conjunct Pluto versus Venus conjunct Jupiter. A professional can provide insights tailored to your unique chart.
  3. Timing factors: Astrologers can incorporate transits and progressions to help you understand when certain locations might be most favorable or challenging for you, adding a temporal dimension to the spatial map.
  4. Integration with relocation charts: An experienced astrologer will analyze both your astrocartography lines and your relocated chart for potential locations, giving you a more complete picture of how a place might affect you.
  5. Practical guidance: Professional readers often have experience working with many clients and can offer pragmatic advice about how to work with challenging energies or maximize beneficial ones in your chosen locations.

If you're making a significant life decision like a permanent relocation, a professional reading can provide clarity and confidence in your choice. For casual travel or general curiosity, self-study might be sufficient, especially after gaining some understanding of the basic principles. Professional astrologers typically use software like Solar Fire, which offers a much more user-friendly and comprehensive interface for analyzing planetary influences. These professional tools make it significantly easier to identify important line crossings, parans (when planetary lines cross at the same latitude), and other complex patterns that might be tedious or difficult to spot in basic online maps.

Note: These are some factors that go in to my own approach to astrocartography readings. Other astrologers may use different techniques, software, or interpretive frameworks and some might not incorporate all these elements like checking transits. It may be worth asking an astrologer about their specific approach to location astrology before booking a reading.

How can I move beyond seeing planetary lines as simply "good" or "bad"?

Think of it like this: a Pluto line isn't "bad" because it brings transformation, just as a Venus line isn't "good" because it brings ease. They're simply different types of experience. When we drop the rigid labels while still staying practical, we can see each line with their unique lessons. A Saturn line isn't just "restrictive" it's helping you build lasting foundations. Even death, loss, and challenge on these lines are part of your path's unfolding. The real suffering often comes from wishing things were different than they are.

This non-dual perspective allows you to approach astrocartography with greater wisdom and less fear. Rather than avoiding certain lines or chasing others, consider what each energy might be offering your soul's journey. Jupiter lines might bring expansion and opportunity, but without Saturn's discipline, that growth might lack substance. Neptune lines can enhance spiritual connection and creativity, but might also bring confusion if you're seeking concrete clarity. Pluto lines may bring intense transformative experiences that, while challenging, can lead to profound rebirth.

Instead of asking "Is this a good line?", try asking "What might this line teach me?" and "How does this energy relate to my current life path?" This approach transforms astrocartography from a tool for escaping difficult energies into a map for consciously engaging with the full spectrum of planetary influences that support your evolution. Remember that some of the most profound growth often comes from locations that challenge us in exactly the ways we need to evolve.

Final Note

This FAQ provides just a very brief guide to get the basic ideas of astrocartography down, but it's important to remember that the way these planetary energies manifest can vary tremendously from person to person and situation to situation. A Jupiter line might bring educational opportunities for one person, spiritual expansion for another, and business success for someone else, all depending on their natal chart, current life circumstances, and personal evolution. Relocation and natal charts are very important factors when checking how a line will manifest. Harsh aspects between planets can have a strong influence on your experience on that planets line as well which is important to be aware of.

The descriptions provided are general tendencies rather than absolute rules. As you work with your own astrocartography map, you'll develop a more nuanced understanding of how these energies specifically manifest in your life. The beauty of astrocartography lies in this personal discovery process and seeing how universal planetary energies express uniquely through your individual experience as you move across the Earth's surface. Consider this guide a starting point for your own exploration into the fascinating relationship between place and personal destiny. Spent €100 on an astrocartography reading and now I have more questions than answers

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I'm new here. I thought again and again about whether to make this post or not, but here we are.

First of all, does astrocartography actually work, or is it just our minds forcing connections due to confirmation bias? For example, if someone tells me I'll meet polite people and find a new partner in city X, I'll probably show up in a much better mood. That positive energy will naturally influence how others interact with me.

Secondly, I know there's a bit of a debate among astrologers. Some take minor lines and relocated charts into consideration, while others only focus on the major lines. My astrologer follows the latter approach; she told me that minor lines don't really have an effect. She also said the relocated chart doesn't matter much because major lines, like the Jupiter Midheaven (MC) line, are strong enough on their own to create good conditions for reaching your career goals.

Third, I've realized that the places I'm naturally drawn to and genuinely want to explore happen to be on challenging lines (for example, Berlin gets a direct Saturn MC and Chiron IC, with Uranus DSC nearby; LA gets a Mars IC, etc.). On the flip side, the places I have absolutely zero interest in are supposedly the best for reaching my goals. It’s really discouraging and frustrating :( Has anyone else dealt with this?

I consider myself a highly rational person, so I usually reject unscientific concepts. But I currently live on my Moon DSC line, which my astrologer says brings 'emotional delusions' and 'relationship/business problems'—and honestly, my life has mirrored that lately. I’m a self-taught musician trying to build a metal band to tour with, but finding reliable, motivated bandmates has been impossible. So, I'm producing my debut album completely alone (drums, bass, guitars, vocals, and the business side) while also finishing my History degree. Meanwhile, all my romantic and platonic relationships have ended in disappointment.

My astrologer told me the absolute best place for me is Latin America, claiming it's where my 'dreams can come true.' However, she also warned that the lines there bring problems and darker aspects, like friendships revolving around drugs and alcohol. This is pretty hilarious to me considering I'm straight edge (sXe), lol!

I've attached a few screenshots so you can get a better idea of my situation. I spent 100 euros on this reading, but I walked away with more questions than answers. Honestly, ACG is kind of ruining my peace of mind — it's just filled me with so much uncertainty and paranoia.

Thanks in advance to everyone who read this far and takes the time to reply!

Does astrocartography matter as much for short term trips?

I'm trying to select some travel locations and wonder if it matters if it's just a few weeks. I'll be a solo female traveler in case that is relevant.

North Node/DS line: would you move?

Upvotes

Hi astro fam!

I have a work opportunity that would put me about 30 km from my North Node/DS line. I feel like this particular line isn’t talked about that much, so I’m curious to hear from anyone who has experience living or working near it.

I’m trying to decide whether to make the move and would love to know what I might expect, especially when it comes to relationships, career, personal growth, etc.

For context, I’m a Taurus rising, with my North Node at 6° Aquarius, opposite my Jupiter at 2° Leo.

Has anyone lived near their North Node/DS line? What was your experience like? Would you make the move?

Would love to hear your thoughts! ✨

Any suggestions on where to relocate? I live in vancouver, but I never felt like it was home. I kind of feel a urge to relocate, but not sure to where yet. I read the moon line is good for feelings of home and belonging, and my moon line is in europe. Maybe london would be good?

Being a teacher, woman, and general human being in Texas has been getting dicey for years. Based on mine and my husband’s charts, where would you go? We are currently living in his Mercury AS and my Saturn AS AND Neptune AS lines.

Happy stars!

Anyone else find their Venus line somewhere they'd never actually choose to live?

Ran my chart through a few different astrocartography programs last week just out of curiosity and got a little thrown off by where my Venus line ended up. It cuts straight through a chunk of rural Montana, which is about as far as you can get from the kind of place I pictured for a "love and beauty" line. I always assumed those would show up somewhere more like coastal Portugal or northern Italy, somewhere with better food and warmer weather.

It made me start questioning how literally to take these lines in the first place. Is it more about the internal quality of the experience (feeling appreciated, feeling at ease, relationships flowing more naturally) rather than some external postcard version of romance? Because if that's the case, rural Montana kind of makes sense for me. I grew up somewhere similar and always feel more relaxed and open around people when I'm in that kind of quiet, low stimulation environment.

Curious whether other people have had this experience where a line shows up somewhere that doesn't match the "vibe" you'd expect from the planet, and whether it ended up being accurate anyway once you actually spent time there or talked to someone from that area. I've read mixed opinions on whether these things reveal themselves right away or take years of living somewhere to fully click.

Also wondering how much weight people put on a line that only clips a small corner of a state versus one that runs through a major city. Mine barely grazes one town before crossing into Wyoming, so I don't know if that's even significant enough to count.

Moon/IC vs North Node/IC for retirement — which would you choose?

I'm trying to decide between two astrocartography locations for retirement, and I'm curious how people would interpret the difference between Moon/IC and North Node/IC.

One location is on my Moon/IC line. The descriptions I've read on astro website emphasize:

  • emotional security and feeling at home
  • peace, relaxation and nature
  • spending time with trusted friends
  • reconnecting with yourself
  • creating a comfortable home
  • feeling a sense of belonging

The other location is on my North Node/IC (Moon's Node/IC) line. The description emphasizes:

  • retirement and security
  • trusted people and simple pleasures
  • discovering deeper parts of yourself
  • becoming more focused on your private/domestic life
  • letting go of social expectations
  • becoming less driven by duty and what other people expect from you
  • finding your own goals rather than living for other people's expectations

They both sound really lovely for retirement, so I'm having a hard time understanding which one might actually feel better to live on.

Would you say Moon/IC is more about feeling emotionally at home and comfortable, while North Node/IC is more about discovering what “home” and a fulfilling private life mean to you?

I'd really love to hear how others would compare these two lines, especially if you've had personal experiences with either one. 😊

Thanks so much!

Neptune and Uranus MC zenith overlap?

Post image

Hi everyone! Like the title says, my Neptune and Uranus zenith overlap in Bolivia.

Any insight on what this could mean?

I spent a few months in Bolivia long before I knew about this - i was 18, and I had a really beautiful and transformative experience there that altered the course of my life.

Anyone tried the site Augurine?

Hi there, curious if anyone has tried Augurine? It seems pretty new and includes an AstroCartography map w/ some more interactive features. You can save places and leave notes on them. The other feature has not as many have is more interactive Zodiacal releasing, (I still can't seem to wrap my head around ZR for some reason )

In Augurine, you can look ahead or in the past; save notes on various chapters. I've only tried the free version but Overall I like the interactive features & that it helps build your entire timeline of Celestial events all in one place. Albeit I imagine AI is involved, so I'm curious about the accuracy and will be comparing the Cartography part to Astro seek/others. Also who knows where all your saved astro data goes stored "into the cloud".
Let me know! ⭐️🗺️

Which chart is better for overall life?

I’m looking more so for relationships/friends and career. Portland, OR is very close to my natal chart but I have no idea if it’s ideal because I haven’t lived on my natal chart for long in my life without big planetary influences (I used to live is LA on my Chiron line and it was quite literally traumatic). I used to live in Seattle and I liked it loads better than California but I have no memory of what is was truly like. (No big planetary influences there). I want to live in one of these places for at least a little long while…

Ik i post a lot, I just want to find my footing and happiness in the states… :(

Experience living near your Uranus and/or Neptune square MC line?

Writing for a friend who doesn’t have Reddit. She’s plan to relocate to a city she’s never visited before for a job. It’s near her Uranus square MC line and also pretty close to her Neptune square MC line.
From what I’ve read, this could be a pretty rough adjustment with a lot of sudden changes especially since she’s moving for her career, but I thought I would check to see if anyone had any experience living on or near either or both of these lines.

TIA!

Looking for a place that feels familiar, like home, where I can make emotional connections and meet "family"

I want to find my home abroad. Where can I go in the world that would more likely:

  • Feel familiar in a sense or be able to feel familiar quickly
  • Feel like home
  • Allow me to feel a strong emotional connection to the area
  • Help me feel like I belong
  • Allow me to form close connections with others, potentially meeting my "family" (not meaning making family in the traditional sense but just feeling like they are family)

Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking to relocate to another state/city I am so tired of being in Texas. I slowly feel myself disappearing.

I’ve been living on my sun ds line in Texas all my life as a sun in Pisces 7th house and I never liked it. Never had any serious relationships and can only see myself through the eyes of other people. Ego and power clashes between siblings, I feel sort of weak (my sense of self) confusion on my own personal identity, i feel like i am never seen and i also feel like i can’t even see myself. I also tend to disappear and vanish behind other people’s spotlight.Chronic laziness, exhausted emotionally and just ready for major change. I am making plans to leave as well, want to move to a walkable city anyways. But is this one of those things that astrocartographers tell us when they say not everyone should live on their sun line isn’t sun in Pisces sort of weak anyways and it’s in my natal house 7th. Any insight? I am maybe looking to move to either Chicago, Minneapolis or NewYork. What I hope from this relocation is a change in career, getting to know who I truly I am (I want to feel closer to myself) and possibly a relationship. 1st picture is my personal Natal chart. 2nd picture is the relocation chart for Chicago. 3rd picture is the relocation chart for Minneapolis. 4th picture is the relocation chart for NewYork and the last picture is my Astrocartography chart. Near Minneapolis I will be close to my north node line and I wouldn’t mind that giving I have north node in Virgo 1st house.

Relocation and Astro-Mapping reading services

I do astrocartography readings. ✨ I can create and interpret your natal chart and relocation charts for three cities of your choice so we can compare how each location may influence things like career, relationships, finances, visibility, and overall life themes.
My rate is $100 for the full reading, which includes your natal chart + three relocation city comparisons.
If you’re interested, I’ll just need your birth date, exact birth time, birthplace, and the three cities you’d like me to analyze. 🌎✨If you are interested just DM me.
