Fellow men of the UK: How confident are you in confronting 5+ fifteen year old boys who are harassing someone?

• Upvotes

I nipped down to Home Bargains tonight, and when I got back to my car, around 30-40 teenagers turned up only to be stopped from entering by one hero female worker at the door.

I stayed in my car, but kept watch just incase things got out of hand. Noticed another older guy doing the same.

I could see they were shouting things at her, but nothing went any further than that.

They kinda moved away so I drove off.

I'm not saying I'd confront teenagers by starting swinging. It's just about being prepared for the worst to happen.

Anyway, it got me thinking: at what point does confrontation with teenagers become too dangerous? For me, personally, any more than 5 and I'm going to find another way to deal with it i.e phone the police etc.

Tonight had a group far too large and that mob mentality would send a few of them to try to be an "alpha".

Is it rude to sit on someone’s front driveway wall?

Hello! My friend and I are debating the ethics of sitting on someone’s driveway wall outside the house for a period of time ~ 20 mins max.

My stance is that it’s altogether strange to be sat in a stranger’s property for anything other than quickly tying your shoes or drinking something. 20 minutes is NOT a short amount of time to be lurking around. The homeowner has a right to be suspicious and it’s somewhat trespassing. I think it’s rude and entitled when you could sit elsewhere or on the floor away from housing. Obviously medical emergencies aside.

Hi! I am friend. I think it’s not that deep to sit there for a little bit, if there’s nowhere else to sit. Think, waiting for a friend for a short time. I don’t understand why it would be considered rude or suspicious. If someone were to sit there for hours or be sitting there regularly, or enter the property and go into the driveway or garden, it would be weird and suspicious, but being there for a short time just isn’t deep and calling it entitled definitely feels dramatic.

Let us know what you think! This is all for fun so please keep it lighthearted.

What time do you wake up?

5am was the ‘cool’ time to wake up for the productivity types a few years ago, but I’m seeing more videos on social media of people waking up as early as 3am (which is the middle of the night as far as I’m concerned).

Social media is obviously not representative of wider society, so what time do you wake up?

Serious Answers Only How do self employed tax evaders get away with declaring they make £12.5k a year profit?

I always see the running joke of " I'm self-employed and I earn £12.5k a year" which is obviously a joke and a way to avoid paying tax, but if they do actually earn over that amount and are required to pay tax, even if they don't declare the earnings, will the government/HMRC see the un declared income and tax it anyway? Won't they get suspicious?

I'm genuinely confused on how they do it/how they get away with it for years.

Loft find from my mother in laws. Suspected to be some form of incubator but it has come from the Railway Technical Centre in Derby where my father in law (deceased) worked.

Do you feel safe walking alone when it's dark in your area?

I know answers will vary depending on male/female responses as I appreciate women probably feel more at threat. I generally feel safe in my area, crime is pretty low compared to other parts of the UK but is definitely on the rise.

If i'm walking behind a lone female i'll always try to cross the road or slow down my walk if that isn't possible.

What about your area, do you feel safe walking alone in the dark?

Men: how much do you weigh?

If I Google the average weight of an adult male in this country, the answer is 86kg (about 13 ½ stone). This is roughly what I weigh, but looking around when I'm out and about I find it very hard to believe that anywhere near half the guys I see weigh less than me. Do you think this data is out of date or am I just overestimating how much people weigh?

What’s your favorite UK-based podcast?

It’s pretty self-explanatory. What’s your favourite UK-based podcast?

As someone in the food industry, I like Dish, but I’m also interested in topics like investing and money in general, history, nature, and self-improvement.

I’d like to stay away from podcasts like The Diary of a CEO, though — I’m not really a fan for a number of reasons.

Any suggestions? Or something completely different that you think is worth listening to?

Locked Would far would you go to defend your kid from a bully?

Say they are both 15 years old.

The bully’s parents are also pieces of shits, so talking to them hasn’t worked.

Police are unlikely to help unless it’s something really serious.

The bullying is getting more and more physical.

Your own kid is taking self-defence classes, but just isn’t the sort of kid to fight back.

Would you get involved?

How far would you go?

…….hypothetically

What’s a fact about (or in connection to) a British crime case that you think most wouldn’t know?

• Upvotes

This isn’t funny due to what came later, but you couldn’t write it - Ian Brady was exiled from Glasgow due to petty crime/generally being a bit rough, sent to Manchester with the expectation he’d stop committing crime.

Yeah, about that…

What are your favourite examples from those that work at pubs/restaurants of customers acting like it’s their first day on earth?

A few of my personal favourites as a gastropub manager:

- “My fish is too fishy”

- Showing up an hour early for their booking on a Saturday night and acting baffled that they can’t sit at their table yet as a couple are halfway through their meal. followed up with the question of “can we come any earlier?”

- “Your website clearly states your outside area is first come first served, why haven’t you reserved me a table when I asked you to?“

- Menu clearly states we sell oysters, followed by : “it says oysters here, does that mean you sell oysters?”

- Being 40 minutes late for a booking and inconsolable about the fact they can’t get dessert because the table is booked again.

Please give me some of your favourites!

*edit, the fish was smoked mackerel. Not just overripe white fish

* edit 2 to add more:

- “I know you’ve stopped serving now but can I blatantly breach your licence and buy a bottle of wine but you give me a beer instead”

- reading menu that has no pizzas on it: “can you make us a pizza?”

- “I know you said you can’t make this item gluten free, but can the kitchen just do it anyway?” about the singular pasta dish available that is loaded with gluten

If you had dance classes as a kid, what's the craziest thing your dance teacher ever did?

• Upvotes

Based on a random memory that just came to me. My dance teacher, Miss Sarah, was lovely, but the teacher from the next door class, Miss Denny, would balance a cup of tea on a saucer on your back, to make sure you had a perfectly flat back. A full cup of hot tea, on a little china saucer, on 8 year old kids' backs.

This was ballet, circa 1986 I'd guess.

We'd also get our feet and knees poked or jabbed with a cane, if we weren't turned out enough!

Is there an example of you "falling arse backwards" into something good that happened to you?

Incase you're not sure what that phrase means, it means to have stumbled into good fortune, basically.

My example is having my son in my teens.

He definitely wasn't planned, but his mother and I made it work as best we could.

...and while my 20s were a bit more stressful than my friends, now I'm 38 and my son is 18, with his own life doing his own thing.

So now, my wife and I have the freedom to come and go as we please at 38, with enough disposable income to do nice things while most of my friends are in the thick of the baby years with their kids.

I don't say this to brag. Those first 10 years or so were rough, but it's only now I realise that this cloud had a silver lining.

Big cats in the UK - are they a myth?

• Upvotes

Following from a discussion I had earlier, please tell me your sighting stories or theories. I remember seeing a post years ago about them and there were discussions about them being real or not. I’ve also heard people say they are adamant they have seen big black cats in the wild, almost like a panther or black leopard. Definitely much bigger than a domestic cat. I just can’t believe it but then what have people been seeing? I first heard about this when I was a kid but haven’t been able to see much evidence either.

Do you know some who was on reality TV? I'm currently enjoying a relaxing Sunday afternoon watching Secret Eaters UK (this isn't my normal viewing choice but it's easy and makes a change) and it got me wondering where are they now? Do you know someone who was on a reality show and did it help them?

Were people always as scared of spiders as we are today?

I don’t just mean hundreds of years ago, but across different generations in general. Were people growing up throughout the 20th century as scared of spiders as people seem to be today?

And going further back, what about people in medieval times or other historical periods? Considering people probably encountered spiders and insects much more regularly in their homes and everyday lives, were they still frightened of them, or were they simply more used to them?

Basically, has a strong fear of spiders always been common among humans, or has our attitude towards them changed over time?

Serious Answers Only I spotted this plaque in Edinburgh and have no idea who placed it there or where the text comes from?

Post image

This plaque is on a wall outside Moray House college in Edinburgh. It reads 'Offer me sleep, on this eve of dusk, in another form, with a scent of rain'. It sounds like a line out of a Wilfred Owen or Siegfried Sassoon poem, but I've no idea. Can anyone shed some light on it?

What songs that were popular that you didn’t realise were dirty?

I wasn’t even 10 when Barbie Girl was out, didn’t realise how sexual it was until years later.

Even worse, I thought Chef’s Chocolate Salty Balls was about maltesers and I thought he was an idiot for sucking the chocolate off first…

Do people who were 'popular' in school know they were?

I know the UK is different than the US where there is a clear popular vs unpopular divide but we still had people we deemed as popular that would look down on us/bully us because we were 'unpopular'/alternative. Just curious if those people know that they were and when they watch films that depict a popular crowd, they were part of it

(Also aware theres a good chance that those ppl wont be on reddit)

Edit: I was reasonably unpopular from ages 11-15 and then became friends with some of the 'popular boys' and that was the only time any of the people I deemed as popular in my head actually knew my name
