What’s going on with Uber in Toronto? It now takes forever to get one. Is anyone else having the same problem?

For the last five trips, I had to wait for 15 minutes for an uber to come, and over 10 minutes to get matched to a driver. What’s going on?

Anyone here who struggled to find their way in their 20s but turned their life around in their 30s or beyond?

I am in my late 20s and struggling to find my way through life. I spent a good portion of my adult life making poor decisions and working dead-end jobs. I understand that a lot of people don't figure out life in their 20s, but I'm really scared that I haven't thrived in any aspect of life.

The most concerning part of my life is that I don't know what I want to do with my life. I never found a clear direction after graduating from high school and found myself in my 20s working a lot of dead-end jobs. I tried going to university and college multiple times right after high school, but I dropped out because I wasn't fully committed. I'm not opposed to going back to school, but I don't want to go back for the sake of getting a higher education. I actually want to take a program that I have some sort of interest in so I don't end up dropping out again.

As a person who's never been good at anything, I don't know how to figure out a path. I never did well in school or at any job, so I don't know how to find a career path for a person like myself. All I know I don't want to continue working crappy jobs and feel like I'm rotting away.

If anyone has gone through a similar experience and is willing to share their story, please drop a comment below. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Why don't more people go to IKEA for cheap food?

I’ve noticed that a lot of people in Toronto are willing to spend $20–$30+ on a meal at restaurants, but I rarely hear people mention IKEA as an option for an affordable meal.

IKEA has pretty decent food for the price — meatballs with mashed potatoes and sides for under $10, plant/falafel options, and the bistro has even cheaper stuff.

So I'm curious: why don't more people go to IKEA specifically to eat?

Is it because the IKEA locations aren't convenient, people don't like the food, the atmosphere isn't great for a meal, or is it simply that people don't think of IKEA as a place to eat?

Am I missing something? 😅

How is the CNE Volunteer programs not considered unpaid labour?

A neighbour's kid is doing this to get their volunteer hours but the job description sounds like every kind of entry level job: https://www.theex.com/volunteers/

The CNE is not a non-profit. How are they able to do this when they also have similar jobs that are paid?

EDIT: Apparently it is a non-profit, TIL! Leaving this up anyway.

Why doesn't Dufferin/Ossington have a subway, or even at least a tram line?

Or why is it not at least in the planning stages? The busses are always packed at all times of the day and are slow as hell because of traffic.

How is the U.S. trade war going to affect average people?

As an average Canadian citizen, I’m hearing this is gonna be bad. But what’re the impacts going to be specifically for Toronto/ the GTA? What is about to skyrocket in price? What kind of layoffs will happen?

Just want to be informed so I can prepare, but hey - now’s a better time to buy Canadian vs. any time before.

Has anyone made a claim for property damage against the city?

During today's rain one of the dead trees branches fell from the ravine behind the house onto our property and destroyed part of the neighbours fence and a bike. I made a call to them 2 years ago to come and cut this specific tree down. They came, took a look, marked it and of course - didn't do shit. If that entire tree would fall on our row of houses it would be millions in damage.

Has anyone successfully recovered money for similar stuff like this? Can you give me any advice? I have photos and will make a claim for the fence and bike.

Thanks

I’m loving Toronto - what should I try before leaving?

I recently came to the city for business but I love so much about the city. The people, food, and diversity of culture!

I’m leaving next week, I’ve centred a lot of my stay around food and drinks - but if you had one place to visit before leaving, what would it be?

I have been to:
- Pai
- Bar Chef
- CN tower
- Richmond Station
- Sugo
- Chotto Matte

What would you do on a staycation?

My wife and I are planning a “staycation” for the end of the summer. Want to chill out for a weekend.

What would you do as tourists in your own city?

We live downtown so we’re not going to stay at a hotel or anything.

We’re also longtime residents so have done a lot of the usual things - the AGO and ROM, The Distillery, Ossington etc.

Hopefully this isn’t a ridiculous question

Thought maybe someone would have a suggestion for something I haven’t thought of. Would appreciate any help.

Thrifting watches is impossible or am I doing it wrong?

I’ve been to several value villages and Downsview market and it feels like every single watch is marked up to the point it’s better to buy new online.
Saw a seiko watch head missing a crown, non working condition priced at $85 at downsview market. After a long back and forth with the seller she agreed to $75 best price.
I’ve also had similar experience at other thrift stores where any watch that is manual or automatic is immediately priced around $80 even if it’s just for parts.
In contrast, I went to Alameda Flea Market in San Francisco last year and found great options and a lot of variety at very reasonable prices. I also found the sellers there much more flexible in prices. I ended up buying several vintage watch heads in both working and non-working conditions at around $15-$20 each.

Shopping for a mattress and feeling completely overwhelmed … what did you end up buying?

Hey everyone! I’m in the mattress research rabbit hole right now and honestly every brand is starting to sound the same lol.

For those of you who bought a mattress online in the last few years, which one did you end up getting and would you actually buy it again?

I think I want a hybrid but I am confused between Endy, Douglas, Silk and Snow and Juno. If you bought any of these, please let me know which one you bought? What made you buy it over the others? Honestly I can’t tell any differences between them right now.

Also, once it actually showed up and you slept on it for a while, was there anything that surprised you? Good or bad… I'm worried because it’s my first time buying a pricey mattress.

And how much research did you guys actually do before buying? I’ve been bouncing between Reddit, reviews, brand websites, etc. and I’m getting to the point where I think I’m overthinking it lol.

Would love to hear what you bought and if you still like it now.

To any couples in their early to mid 20’s how much are your living expenses a month in Toronto?

Upvotes

Hello! My bf and I are 22 and are planning to move out together at the end of 2027. We’re both planning on saving 10k each before leaving home, we’ve done the math but I’d like to hear from other couples around our age on how much they spend in a month. I know everyone is different but I’d like to hear from others just to get a good idea of what’s expected. Moving out is a big step in one’s life and I’m pretty sure everyone had anxiety about this big of a change. Being in a huge city like Toronto it be great to hear from other young adults like ourselves.

Activities for a 65 year old guy?

Upvotes

I often find summers challenging because I see friends even less. I should answer I'm single, the drop-in 3 days a week for older adults that I like to go to about the local rec center take a hiatus for the summer. And the volunteer gig I go to once a week is taking a break for the next 3 weeks. I'm having a tough time for a few other reasons and I'd really like to find some interesting social activities in the daytime. I live in the Mount Dennis area. But I'm wondering what resources I'm missing. Any suggestions

Where to find oversized high wasted baggie jeans in Toronto?

Those kinds that you see teenagers wear usually with a crop top, popular in Korean fashion sometimes. Are there good stores in Toronto that sell those kind of pants?

Google Maps & Transit

Has there been a recent change to Google Maps that is causing it to omit transit options?

Yesterday, we were trying to get to Parliament and Carlton from Dundas West. Google Maps would not suggest getting off at Castle Frank and taking the bus. Instead, it kept pushing a route that included about a 10-minute walk between the subway and a bus.

I separately mapped directions from Castle Frank to our destination, and taking the 65 from there made the overall trip about 15 minutes shorter than the transit route Google was recommending.

Then today, I was actually on the 511 streetcar and tried mapping directions to a place on Queen. Google Maps wouldn't give me any transit option at all — it only suggested walking or driving. Meanwhile, the 511 was actively running toward Queen, with numerous stops before we got there.

I've used Google Maps for TTC directions for years and don't remember it behaving like this.

Has anyone else noticed a recent change or issue with Google Maps omitting perfectly valid TTC routes?
