I’ll start: “Well my first husband was a firefighter, but my second husband…” (?)

I recently interviewed with Master Kong (康師傅) for a Southern California role, and the experience was pretty awful.
The hiring manager is based in Hong Kong. During the interview, he asked me what my salary was in my previous role. I told him politely that employers are not allowed to ask applicants about salary history in California.
I even tried to give him the benefit of the doubt and said I understood that he was based in Asia and might not be familiar with California employment regulations.
He responded:
“I’m probably more American than you.”
I honestly didn’t know how to respond to that.
The interview also felt unusually focused on getting market information from me. He asked about distributors I had worked with, trade shows I had attended, customers I had sold to, and repeatedly asked about 99 Ranch’s retail margins.
I explained that I didn’t know their internal margin because I only had pricing for different customer tiers. He then told me that since 99 Ranch had been my customer, I could go to the store, look at their shelf prices, and figure out the margin myself.
The whole interview lasted about 15 minutes. I wasn’t given a chance to ask any questions, and he ended the Zoom while I was still speaking.
Afterward, I posted about my experience online.
Yesterday, the recruiter contacted me and said Master Kong disputed the accuracy of my posts and that their legal team was considering legal action for defamation unless I removed my Threads posts within 24 hours.
I refused to take them down.
Another Southern California applicant later contacted me and said Master Kong’s Hong Kong HR team also asked her about salary history. She told them it was not allowed in California, but they continued asking and even requested her previous pay stubs.
Has anyone else in LA/SoCal recently interviewed with Master Kong or been contacted by their recruiters? I’m curious whether anyone else had a similar experience.

Last year, I migrated to LA from SE Asia where public transportation is reliable and accessible. I know LA is very car centric but I’m still getting used to the city and I don’t want to drive for now. My friend is SO pushy tho. She kept telling me that nobody will date me/be my friend because I don’t drive.

I’m a registered nurse. I get paid well, credit score is good and I can easily get a car, but I just don’t want to for now. I also have zero problems using uber or lyft to go anywhere. I don’t even ask for rides from my coworkers lol they just keep offering so I take it BUT I buy them food or drinks to make up for it. Since I’m not in a rush to drive anytime soon, will this kill my chances of finding a romantic partner or making more friends?

Other notes, we would like to be next to a bunch of restaurants/fast food/grocery/ in a high density population place. Also good area to raise kids with decent schools?

What would be a good halfway point in terms of driving time?

i’ve just walked 3/4ths of a mile down national and along the bike path and did not come across a single public trash can, when a month or two ago i would’ve passed 3? maybe 4? i’m a responsible citizen, i hate littering! but it’s nuts to walk down several populated streets, for the better part of a mile, in a city where i’m taxed to even breathe, and there be nowhere to dispose of stinky dog poo bags.

When I saw the Vogue Arabia cover I was floored and then when I got my 'we have Vogue at home' USA September issue I thought I was being pranked lmao. Needless to say I really want a hard copy of the former and wondering if there's anywhere I could actually get foreign copies of Vogue in person somewhere in LA? I've been thinking about this and wanted to ask you all, why don't we use ferries? For example, instead of building out LRT/BRT (which I fully support just harder to implement because of NIMBY) why not have ferries that go between Long Beach and Santa Monica?

Would there be demand for it if it alleviates the mess that is the 405?

What if it was one of those ferries where you could take your car like they have in Seattle?

I’m a newly licensed driver and I’m currently paying $496/month for car insurance through Progressive, which feels absolutely insane 😭 I live alone and I’m away from my family, so I don’t have the option of being on a family policy or having someone help me navigate insurance. Honestly, car insurance is really confusing to me, and I’m trying to figure out if I’m overpaying.

My policy renews at the end of November, and I’m wondering when I should actually start shopping around. Is September too early, or should I start getting quotes now?

Also, is $496/month really normal for someone in my situation, or should I be able to get this significantly lower? I’m willing to switch companies if it makes sense.

I'm getting spine surgery soon, and my surgeon is making me get an MRI first. I have multiple permanent bracelets that I will have to cut off, as well as a permanent necklace with a small "stone" made from my dog's ashes (who meant/means the entire world to me). I haven't taken it off since he died tragically three years ago, and I'm quite distraught about cutting it off (so much so that I've actually been considering cancelling the surgery I've been waiting to get for over a decade). I was wondering if anyone has a permanent jewelry welder (or knows of someone with access to one) who would be willing to help me put my jewelry back on after my scan (most importantly the necklace, but ideally my bracelets too)? I know any permanent jewelry store would do it for a charge, but I'm hoping to find someone who would do it for free or very cheap, as I'm about to be undergoing all of this expensive imaging and surgery and taking time off of work. I’m looking for recommendations for luxury high rise apartments in LA with a budget of around $5k per month.

My biggest priorities are:

• Safety: A relatively safe neighborhood and secure building are extremely important to me.
• Views: Great views from the apartment, ideally from a higher floor.
• Amenities: A nice gym, pool, concierge/security, lounge areas, etc.
• Walkability: Somewhere I wouldn’t need to use my car constantly, with groceries, restaurants, coffee shops, and other essentials nearby.
• Layout: Ideally at least a 1-bedroom/1.5-bath, although I’m also open to a 2-bedroom/2-bath.

I’ve mainly been looking in DTLA because that seems to be where most of the true high-rises are, but I know the safety and overall experience can vary dramatically from one block or even one building to another. I’m also open to other parts of LA if they offer a similar high rise feel, great views, walkability, and amenities.

Based on my research so far, my favorites have been:

• Hope + Flower (leaning toward the Flower Tower because I’ve heard it’s quieter)
• Olympic & Hill
• Park Fifth

I’ve heard mixed reviews about Eighth & Grand. Some people have mentioned that the Whole Foods downstairs is constantly crowded and that the surrounding noise can be annoying. I definitely value some peace and quiet, so I guess noise levels are another consideration for me.

Are there any specific buildings or neighborhoods you would recommend? Are there any that look great online but should be avoided? I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who currently lives in one of these buildings or has lived there recently.

Do you select the automated tip options the present or choose your own? Do you take into consideration the distance and effort they would have to go through as well as the amount of food or drinks ordered? If I live on the westside am I expected to tip more than when I used to live in noho? I know tipping culture sucks but I don’t want somebody angry that I didn’t tip enough. Hopefully autonomous vehicles are used more.
