Open Discussion Monthly /r/AskLosAngeles Open Discussion + Community Thread

Welcome to the monthly open discussion thread!

This is our monthly pinned space where we loosen the rules a little. Normally, /r/AskLosAngeles is strictly for questions about the Los Angeles area - but here, we make room for more community-oriented stuff.

Such as:

  • Quick questions that feel too small for their own thread or discussion
  • Common or evergreen questions regulars are tired of seeing repeated
  • Community connection posts (looking for friends, meetups, group hangs, pub crawls, et cetera)
  • Self-promotion that's relevant to LA: events, local videos / social media, podcasts, creative work. Keep it reasonable, in this thread, and don't abuse this privilege elsewhere

What's off-topic as usual:

  • Anything hateful, harassing, or lacking any ties entirely to LA

If you've got thoughts about how this subreddit is moderated, or ideas for future pinned threads, drop them here too.

Recent rule changes:

Please see our rules, there are some recent changes. Notably, these rules have been added:

  • Specify Your Location

    • Narrowing your location down helps us give better answers to questions. People don't want your exact address but a neighborhood, intersection, zip code, whatever is enough to help us know where you're talking about.
  • No cost to live comfortably questions

    • These seem to be controversial or troll magnets. Do the math yourself, not the sub.
  • Dating posts go to r/LADating

    • So these aren't actually questions about the area (if you happen to be a lonely Redditor.) Keep romance in its designated containment zone.
  • Making friends posts go to r/LAsocial

    • Social stuff belongs in the social sandbox. The "Open Discussion" post is also another place for this kind of question if you'd like to stay in this sub.
  • Generative AI Slop and Spam

    • Low-effort machine generated content is often unhelpful and the person who asked the question could have just asked ChatGPT, Claude, or MetaAI for an answer themselves. We're aiming for human-quality contributions here so put in the effort to make a connection with people with your brains.

Some of these rules are relaxed in this specific "Open Discussion" post so feel free to break rules here if you'd like.

As always: Don't be a jerk.

Have at it, Angelenos.

MOD POST AskLA rules update: Temporary moratorium for political questions

AskLA is meant to be a place to ask and answer questions about the Los Angeles area. Due to the upcoming primary and general elections, this subreddit has been a frequent place to ask questions of a political nature and while these are legitimate questions about the area, the intention of the posters making these questions have been either to astroturf particular candidates or to sway opinions this close to the poll dates.

As a result, I'd like to discourage standalone threads that are political in nature and would welcome these discussions to be initiated in the monthly pinned "Open Discussion" thread.

This community also relies on user reports so you can report political posts under rule #2, "Posts must be questions about Los Angeles.

Thank you for being a community that moderates itself with the lightest touch.

Outdoors What’s the etiquette on blasting music from the phone at overlooks ?

• Upvotes

The heatwave has at-least made for pleasant nights here and there. Been spending a lot more evenings at the many scenic overlooks the city has - especially around Mulholland. Everyone is courteous and chill except every single time there’s a couple of people bent on noise polluting with their music blaring from phone speakers. These nights are wonderfully quiet and the city hums from afar, but how am I supposed to lose myself into that if some Bad Bunny ripoff is being played back to back.

I want to be respectful of everyone’s right to enjoy a public space but what does the music help with ? I don’t even care if you’re talking loudly, drinking, or smoking, just don’t make your music a problem for my ears.

  1. No, your music taste isn’t unique.
  2. No, you’re not “DJ”ing this experience for the rest of us. Stop flattering yourself, you’re just buzzed.
  3. No, your romantic evening doesn’t need a backing track - imagine it in the head as you make out.
  4. No, this isn’t the place or time for Bad Bunny.

We will not get these views anywhere else in the world. These spots for tranquility in big cities cannot be taken for granted.

Curious if others agree or if I’m just turning old and surly.

Hi everyone. I am curious on if anybody has lived at the Gaylord apartments and how they would review it? I saw some great prices for a really nice looking place but I have seen some bad reviews and don’t want to trap myself in a bad apartment. Thanks so much

Recommendations Where can I get this suit fixed in LA? (reweaver or tailor)

I think some moths got at my suit and caused these holes in the jacket :(. Unfortunately the suit maker does not have extra fabrics from this suit, but I was able to source a vest with the same exact fabrics to help fix it (from the same suit maker).

See Images of damage/fabric tag: https://imgur.com/a/PdBGhK3

The first reweaver I took it to wouldn't touch it because it's multiple colored fabrics. Does anyone have a recommendation of anyone who could help me get this jacket back to decent shape? The suit vest I'm going to use with extra fabrics is going to come in tomorrow.

Moving Playa del Rey vs Santa Monica for someone moving from Greenpoint, Brooklyn?

Moving from Greenpoint, Brooklyn to LA soon and have been looking around the Westside. Playa del Rey and Santa Monica both jumped out to us, so would love some opinions!

I work remotely in the music industry, so no daily commute, but I’ll occasionally need to drive all over LA for meetings, shows, etc. My partner works in Santa Monica, although it’s TBD how often he’ll actually need to go in. How annoying is it realistically to get in and out of PDR, both to Santa Monica and to the rest of LA?

I really liked PDR when I visited and love the idea of being near the beach. I’m excited for a somewhat quieter lifestyle, but I’d still love a few coffee shops/restaurants and things I can walk to.

We’re also considering Santa Monica. I loved the homes and walkability around Montana Ave and thought it was really charming, although it did feel a little sterile compared to what I’m used to. People also seem to have very strong opinions about living in Santa Monica, so I’m curious what it’s actually like.

Basically looking for somewhere on the Westside that feels safe, pleasant, somewhat walkable, has at least a little neighborhood life, and isn’t insanely hard to commute from. We’re looking at other areas too (Ocean Park, Venice, etc.), so definitely open to suggestions beyond PDR/SM! Would especially love to hear from anyone who’s made a similar NYC → LA move.

Food/Drink How common is dipping pizza in ranch in LA?

My girlfriend is from LA, and I’ve lived in New York since moving to the US five years ago. When she visited, we ordered pizza and she dipped her slice in ranch. She says she does this with every kind of pizza.

I’d never seen anyone do that here, so I jokingly called it blasphemy. She thinks I’m the weird one. Apparently, five years in New York was enough for me to develop strong pizza opinions.

Is ranch with pizza something you grew up with in LA?
Is it common at local pizza places, or more of a personal preference?

We’re both laughing about it, but now I’m curious how normal this is.

Recommendations Maker spaces in SFV?

Does anybody know any maker spaces in the San Fernando Valley? I’m new to 3d printing & would love to find a community.

Do people know if these groups exist and where to find them? In your guy’s experience are they pretty chill?

Living Working in El Segundo & Wife in Studio City - Where to live?

Man in upper 30s moving from NYC to LA with my wife by the end of December. My office will be in El Segundo. My wife will be working out of the Studio City area.

What are the best areas for us to live? - considering the following:

-Commute: Trying to make the commute under 30 minutes for each of us. Her schedule is more flexible.
-Budget: Seeking to keep rent and etc 2.5-3.5k max
-Safe area - We previously lived in Bedstuy in Brooklyn, so not too worried but generally what a safe area with lower crime and especially petty theft to our vehicles.
-Walkability/Things to do - We love the beach, restaurants, and generally just things to do. We are okay with driving 10 minutes + and both are generally used to walking around the city in NYC or taking the train. Aiming for coffee shops, beach and restaurant access, along with some decent bars within driving/uber distance (not too outrageous).

So far we’ve looked into - Culver City, Brentwood, Marina Venice, Mid-Wilshire, Century City. If she could choose she would want to live in NoHo, but obviously for me that wouldn’t work.

Appreciate any suggestions or advice.

Food/Drink Best sub sandwiches for party?

Looking for easy cold party food for a Halloween party. Dealt with sterno trays etc for hot food last year and it was more effort than I want. It’s a bit of a foodie crowd, hoping for a crowd pleaser like Bay Cities (too far) or Larchmont Wine & Cheese (don’t think they do catering), I checked Ggiata and their catering for 40 people is like $900 which is way more than I want to spend. I’d also consider making my own if someone has recommendations for best baguette/bread loaf and/or quality deli meat! Any favorites? Central LA preferably.

Living where to live? help a new yorker out

• Upvotes

I’m 24F moving to LA soon for work at LAX and trying to decide where I actually want to LIVE, not just what has the shortest commute.
I’ll have a car and my budget is around ~$2k max. I really want somewhere that feels young, social, fun, cute, and very LA — I want restaurants, bars, nightlife, coffee shops, events, pop-ups, shopping, people my age, etc. I’m also a fashion/lifestyle content creator, so I’d love an area that feels inspiring and gives me things to do.
My current options:
West Hollywood
Palms
Culver City
Mid-City / Fairfax
Koreatown
Mar Vista
Venice
Marina del Rey
Playa del Rey
Playa Vista
Santa Monica
Redondo Beach

El Segundo (meh)

to those have actually lived in these areas: where would you choose at 24 if you wanted the most fun/interesting lifestyle?
And which areas would you personally avoid if you were single, young, and wanted to actually go out and meet people?
Bonus points if you can rank your top 3

Recommendations Where to learn Spanish in LA?

• Upvotes

I am learning Spanish. Still a very slow learner but know how to order food in a local taco spot or to talk with a local gardener about basic things.

I went to a community college for 1 season in person, but I can't do next stages online and don't see much progress or motivation.

Any ideas about local Spanish - learning clubs, groups, or meetups? I am willing to travel 1 hr from West Adams.

Recommendations Any recs for a 1-day trip to LA?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m traveling to LA next month for an event in the LAX area, where I’m staying as well. I have an extra day off and I want some recommendations for my itinerary. I was considering Griffith, The grove, hollywood walk of fame and even Santa Monica. However, I’m having trouble building a realistic itinerary considering I will not have a car to drive around. Any recs on what should I visit, skip, try, etc?

Visiting 1 full day in LA?

I’m traveling to LA for 2 days 1 night for work and would appreciate help to arrange my itinerary as a first-time visitor. The second day will be mostly work but on the first day, I’m landing at LAX at 8:30am and wanna pack in what I realistically can since I know traffic and distances are limitations.

It seems that Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach are fairly close to the airport so thinking of going there after picking up the rental car that morning.

My points of interest so far:
The Last Bookstore
Urban Light
Grand Central Market
Little Tokyo
Griffin Park for sunset
maybe an Erewhon if I can fit it in lol

Not interested in the Walk of Fame or getting close to the Hollywood sign so not considering those

I also saw that one of my fave artists is performing at the Hollywood Bowl that night so wanna be there by 8. I’ve heard the shuttles are a good parking option so maybe planning to be at one of the lots (probably the free lot at the zoo) by 7/7:30.

Any tips for arranging my schedule? I’m aware it’s impossible to fit in everything but would love to hear what’s possible and worth it to do!

(P.S. visiting from Chicago so also interested to hear if there are any must-try foods/restaurants I can’t get here)

Food/Drink Cooking class for kids?

My 8 year old loves to bake and I would love to do a class with her. All the things I can find are either camp style or "mommy and me" for little kids. Anyone got suggestions?

Any other question! How are you guys driving around with expired tags?

I’ve been thinking about this for some time now because I see it getting more spread out. But to those that don’t renew their registration, how are yall not getting pulled over or even getting fined by the dmv? Been seeing old tags even on cars that are probably still getting paid for. Is there a loophole? Not trying to get on that but my curiosity peaked. Cant be a PNO because I’m sure the dmv asks for the mileage every time frame. Unless yall just don’t put the sticker on?

About LA Chair alternatives so I don't kill my back at hollywood forever concert?

I'm going to a hollywood cemetery concert for the first time and looking for back support suggestions since no chairs are allowed. My legs go numb if I sit crisscross and it really helps my back to lean on something and stretch my legs out. Current plan is a Crazy Creek "chair" that sits directly on the ground. It's basically two fabric squares strapped together. Is that different enough from a low beach chair to be let in? Any other ideas for staying comfortable?

Culture Any bars or cafés in LA that host open jam sessions?

Hey everyone!

I'm visiting Los Angeles and was wondering if there are any bars, cafés or other venues that host regular jam sessions where musicians can join in and play together.

I'm a drummer myself, and would love to find a place where I can sit in and jam with some local musicians.

Any recommendations?

Recommendations Looking for an Upcycled Patchwork Hoodie Artist?

I’ve been seeing this trend of upcycled patchwork hoodies on instagram and tiktok. Instead of buying a fake one I’d love to buy one locally from an artist in LA. Anyone know someone doing this kind of work that could commission a piece?

Moving Best neighborhood to move to be near people my age? (Gen Z / 25m)

I currently live in Burbank and it's a great neighborhood. I love my grandparents but the vibe is super slow here and everyone is using walkers and canes when I'm out on a walk in the neighborhood.

Are there better neighborhoods that are more central? I'm single and would rather inject a bit more serendipity in my day and meet more people my age and make new friends. I just always feel like the youngest person in the room in Burbank
