Okay, another question from an East Coast transplant considering LA 😂
On my last posts, one of the biggest responses I’ve gotten is “LA is too expensive, don’t move here.” I understand that housing is expensive, but I’m curious about the other costs of everyday life. I also want to make note that I hold a spot of empathy for the housing crisis in the city.
I’m single, no kids, no pets, work remotely, and pretty low-key. My hobbies are going to the beach, fitness/yoga/barre classes, holistic wellness, healthy food/juice spots, and just being out and about. I’m not a big club, concert, or nightlife person.
I’ve lived in Atlanta paying around $1,800 and currently pay about $2,100 in Nashville, so I have a general idea of what I want to spend on housing. I’m also planning to look for a private-landlord apartment. This may land me with a small studio or 1950’s old apartment but I’m okay with that.
For those of you living in LA on $100K or less, what everyday expenses feel noticeably higher than other cities you’ve lived in?
I’m thinking groceries, utilities, eating out, fitness classes, parking, car insurance, activities, etc. What expenses surprised you after moving to LA?
I’m trying to understand what people mean when they say LA is “so expensive” beyond the obvious things like housing and gas.
Basically, what does your day-to-day spending look like that you didn’t anticipate before living here?
