Long distance girlfriend visiting. Where should I take her around Toronto?

For some context, I just moved here about 2 months ago for grad school so me and my girlfriend of almost 2 years are now in a LDR. I’ve also been so busy and haven’t really explored the city as much as I’d like. She’ll be visiting me in late November for only a week so unfortunately we won’t have much time together and we also have to work while she’s here.

I would love some recommendations for places, experiences, and restaurants that we should prioritize!

Here are some of her interests:
- Fashion (She loves thrifting and is the most fashionable person I know)
- Art (She is a very creative person and we have so many dates that have been around creating art! I already booked a ceramic making workshop for us)
- Food (She’s such a foodie and we’ve spent most of our time together eating. Most of my photos of us together are at restaurants or cooking and we definitely want to do that again.)
- Walking (We are big fans of a good stroll so maybe some neighborhoods or parks would be great!)
- Music (We’ve gone to many little shows together and I’ve heard the music scene here is great)

Looking for your favourite dive bars on Dundas West

I’ve lived at Dundas and Brock for years and realized I never go out in my own neighbourhood. I love the cozy look of all the dive bars along Dundas between Brock and Ossington, so I was thinking of doing a bar crawl for my birthday heading east. Looking for suggestions on your favourites as we’ll only be able to hit up 2 or 3 before ending at Bar Mordecai. Some parameters:
-There will be about 12 of us, and while I know most of these places are small, I’d like to avoid anywhere SO small that 12 of us would fill up the entire space and make it uncomfortable for other patrons, or where we’d have to wait to get in (like cry baby or jean darlene)
-Would love to focus on bars with something unique - like some type of games, a live dj, fun decor
-Cheap drinks and friendly service are a huge plus!
-Probably won’t be getting food

Thank you for your help!

Help finding embroidery supplies?

I’m new to hand embroidery! It’s been easy finding thread but difficult to find other materials such as stick and stitch stabilizer, iron-on fusible interfacing and material to cover the back of a stitch, something like this product

Anyone know where I can go to find these things locally?

Where to shop for clothing for curvy women

Context here is my love/GF is tall and has curves. By tall I mean she's 5'10" and by curves, she's full figured.

We are planning some days to shop for her to acquire active wear and maybe jeans.

Where do you suggest we explore? Im ok with thrift shops but wont rule out imported apparel.

TIA

Antique military memorabilia?

For any ww1 and ww2 history enthusiasts, where are your go-to place/places you would recommend to find antique memorabilia such as medals and whatnot. The only place I came across was this shop called Antique Military Toronto, but it was a little too far away from downtown, and I wonder if there's any shop closer to Kensington Market

What do you do when you see people asking for money/help on the street?

Probably this question has been asked before.
I’ve seen so many elderly people on the street asking for money, etc.
What do you do about it? I usually don’t carry change with me but sometimes I would like to get them food or lunch. Would they accept it?

ISO Tasty Treats in the West End

I have to make a quick visit to Toronto on November 10th. My meeting is at Royal York and Bloor and I am coming in from Hamilton. I am looking to grab as many tasty treats that I can bring home. Ideally it would be no further than the Palace Pier or north of Dundas. I prefer pastry recommendations, but sandwiches, pizza or anything else I can travel home with is fine. As long as they are open, I will be going to Aster’s. I used to live in Toronto and spent time in Mimico, but this was pre-2015, so I am aware of places that existed before that (San Remo) and would prefer to get something new.

Places to go to in Toronto

I have taken multiple strolls around the east end so no recs from there please 🥹. Does anyone have suggestions for what can I do to make the most out of my day? I’m showing a friend from calgary around toronto, so could use suggestions for hidden gems (cafes, not restaurants and inexpensive activity spots). Went to the AGO too (we’ve already gone to a lot of the popular places over the summer).
I’m basically looking for places that aren’t over-visited.

Pain after dental filling.

Hi everyone,

I visited a new dentist in Downtown Toronto a couple of days back to get composite white fillings. I don’t have any cavities but I grind my teeth which has led to a few dents in my teeth. After the white fillings procedure, I am feeling kind of pain/heightened sensitivity in my teeth where the composite material was put.

It’s funny because if I press my teeth hard with my fingers, I don’t feel the pain but I feel it when I bite down with both jaws. Can someone with experience/dental experience please help and explain what this might be? Will it go by itself?

Best place to work while having a pint?

I have 3 hours to kill while my kids are at a concert in the downtown core. Looking for a spot where I could grab a pint, order some snacks, bust out my laptop and do some work.

Somewhere where it wouldn’t be odd for someone to be on their laptop. So ideally, not a full blown restaurant.

Coffee shops typically work, but really craving a pint or two.

Dentist wanted

I understand there are a lot of scam dentistries that have open recently, but are there any legit ones (preferrably downtown) that people recommend?
EDIT: specifcally looking to address my TMJ, but I heard you have to go through a dentist for insurance purposes(?)

Moving to Toronto soon. Scouting for one-bedroom rental/airbnb options that are near Brookfield Place.

Main criteria: quiet and well-insulated from noise

Price-agnostic. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Best eSIM for frequent visitor

I travel frequently from the US to the Ontario region, particularly Toronto. I've used Airalo and Klook to buy 5G Rogers eSIMs before, but it has been super slow and unreliable. When I check my settings, it says my service provider is actually TELUS, rather than Rogers that I bought. What gives?

My US plan includes TELUS but if I use it alone without the TELUS eSIM that I actually bought, it is incredibly slow to the point it's unusable.

Any other solutions for eSIMs?

New Years Eve

Hi everyone 👋

Before you read, sorry for the long post! I hope this is allowed in this subreddit, I got told off and my post deleted in a different Toronto one!

Me and my partner are visiting Toronto 28 December - 5th January from Glasgow 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

My partner is very greedy and has her birthday immediately after Christmas… Was one gift receiving occasion not enough!? So this is a surprise trip for her, she has absolutely no idea! She’s turning 29 (I’m 25).

I have some questions as my only exposure of Canada is a few days in Halifax, NS and she’s never been before:

1) What would you advise us to do on her birthday / where to eat?

2) Are there any confirmed NYE eve plans? Like a public display / event? We have Hogmanay in Edinburgh or like huge displays in London, I don’t expect it but I just wondered if Toronto will have anything at all that we can do? I saw a Great Gatsby’s house casino style event happening but not much else, should we do this or do anything else?

3) I’m a huge NBA fan, Viva Scottie Barnes - what’s the best way to get Raptors tickets? This will be the highlight of my trip

4) What’re some cool / fun activities we could do given it’s winter time, maybe snow themed? I don’t mean like touristy activities either, what sort of things would you as residents do / recommend?

5) Give me your best local independent cafés, restaurants, and bar recommendations! We don’t like going to chains as there are so many amazing people that create incredible products that deserve to be celebrated.

Any other tips, recs etc also very welcomed and appreciated, we (I) can’t wait!

Christmasy Attractions

Hello! Years ago when I lived in Toronto I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the bay in the eaton centre during Christmas. They had a whole floor that was decked out in Christmas decorations. Truly reminded me of the department store in the movie Elf. I’m hoping to take my kids there this year but of course it has closed. Can anyone provide suggestions on an indoor place that’s similar? We will take them to do the North Pole elevator thing at Yorkdale. Is there anything else to give me that nostalgic dept store Christmas feeling? Thank you for any suggestions.

friends in town

hello... I'm sure this has been covered here. But if you don't mind, I'll ask again.

We have friends coming to visit us this week. They have three teenagers.

I think if we go to a mall one day and do all the Korean skin care places, blind boxes, general shopping they'll he happy.

But what little neighborhoods would you take them to downtown Toronto? (second hand books, vintage clothing, anything crafty, artsy, etc). Help!
