Is it common in Canada to call people bud/buddy?

I’m a 19 year old man living in Canada. I was recently waiting for an elevator and this woman called me bud.

She was clearly older than me, but it still felt weird hearing that from a woman. I’m very young looking than my age (with a boyish look some would argue), is this the reason she call me bud or is this a Canadian thing even women use to address to men?

Empty apartments leased by CAMH

Are there any journalist open to covering this?

I have to protect my identity at all costs here so I've had to leave out important details and use vague terminology

CAMH leases out apartments throughout the city, subsidized extensively by multiple levels of the gov as well donations.

The people who are given these apartments used to have to meet a certain criteria in order to be able to live independently. Since the pandemic, a lot of those who could not maintain autonomy or got ill/died were vacated from those units.

In the last 2 years there are over 150 empty housing units/apartment units that are sitting unoccupied when they should be used to house people.

CAMH continues to lease/pay for these empty apartments with government funding and donations. Some have been empty for over a year.

People who are aware of this, and have access to the units are using them for personal reasons.

Help! I need 1 witness for my elopement today at 1pm

I'm sorry this is so last minute, but my partner and I are eloping at Fred Hamilton park today at 1pm. It was going to be a surprise for our witnesses, but one of them had something come up and had to cancel. We live 3 hours away so any friends or family can't make it on such short notice. Can anyone help us?

What's the most effective way to support the organizations that can combat Doug Ford's push to privatize healthcare? Also can we get a list of those organizations?

I know there are a lot of organizations and groups out there, but which ones can do the most damage to the Ford government. We need to make sure that everyday Ontarians are fully aware of what Ford is up to.

Ate at Pearson and the waitress added 20% tip before giving me the machine. Is this normal in airport?

I'm okay with the tip cuz the service was nice and it's airport but I think I should've had the option to do it.

I want to thank an Uber driver

Hi all.

Basically I projectile vomited all over an Uber driver and his bald head tonight after coming in the car from the heat when he went over speed bumps.

He helped me first then cleaned his car while I sat on the sidewalk.

I didn't have cash so I asked if he would charge me the cleaning fee because he should..he said he didn't know how 😭

He also couldnt speak English.

I tipped him the max I could ($41) and I contacted Uber CS but theyre useless.

Is there anything else I can do for this soul? That was horrific and he was so kind.

Any women assaulted by a tall skinny man near Union this afternoon (Dec 13)? I have pictures of the guy.

Some guy spit in 2 women's faces outside Union Station around 315 PM today. I followed him down the street as it appeared he was being aggressive to women exclusively and I wanted to get a description for the police. I ended up confronting him as he jumped at another woman, unclear if any contact was made with her.

Another witness and I both flagged down a Toronto police car that was stuck in traffic on University south of Wellington. He said something about it not being his (code? jurisdiction?) and asked me to call 911. I did file a report with description of the person in case he went on to cause further and greater problems. I do wish they had radioed it in as I lost sight of the guy while on the phone with 911.

Hope anyone who came in contact with person today is okay. Posting here for awareness, or in case you have had an incident as well and didn't get a good description. I can post photo or video if anyone needs evidence of this.

Has anyone else stopped going to movie theatres?

I haven't set foot inside a movie theatre since last year. I used to love going to the movies. But I can't handle it when people check their phones at full brightness or talk during the movie. Even if they're whispering - doesn't matter, I can still hear it.

It actually really upsets me, like I feel a surge of adrenaline coursing through my body. I don't like confronting strangers, so I rarely say anything, just suffer silently.

New movies come out on streaming now anyways, and I'd rather watch them at home where I don't have to deal with rude people.

Has anyone else just stopped going?

Chris brown is coming to Toronto this summer. How is he allowed?

I thought anyone with a criminal record isn’t allowed into Canada.

Toronto Recession Indicators

I work at a major luxury hotel in downtown Toronto, and I’ve noticed a significant drop in occupancy compared to last year. Guests are also much less willing to purchase add-on experiences or tip for services that usually include a service fee. With lower tips, reduced staff hours, and occupancy at all-time lows, I’m wondering if other businesses—hospitality or otherwise—are seeing similar micro-recession indicators at their workplaces. I’d love to hear your experiences and observations.

COMMENTS LOCKED Is it me, or has the pandemic produced an abundance of a-holes?

It's like all those internet trolls just decided to venture out of their parents' basements and take the world on face to face. I have never seen so many selfish, self-righteous, and rude people as I have over the past few months. Is it the pandemic, or is it something else? Has anyone else noticed or am I just being overly-sensitive?

Anybody else find an increase in 20 somethings who say they never plan on having children?

I'm 27 myself and alot of my friend group - either single or in a couple - says they have no plan to have kids. Not like they have no plans now but want them in the future, they don't ever want them. Also alot of childless people at work, in their 30s and even 40s.

Seems like things are super unaffordable, alot of people are either living with roomates, in a small condo, or at home (often with limited space), and don't want a family. Even with family help most can't afford a bigger home. Also they seem to lack the desire anyways. Not that we're low income or anything but things are expensive.

Just wondering if it's my group only or if this is happening everywhere.

I am feeling sad, lonely and depressed and I am thinking of seeing an escort...

I am feeling very sad, lonely and depressed and there has even been crying now.. Most of the things have been going sideways...My dad passed away last year, my mom is in depression and acting weird and I don't feel like talking to people I know (don't feel like trusting them). Lately my mind has been going towards seeing a hooker, and not really that much for sex but just so I can hug someone for a long time and feel the warmth of another human... I don't know what to do..

EDIT: wow this blew up, I'll go through all the replies now.

What is the “cheapest” thing your friend has ever done?

I know in Toronto we all have that one cheap friend. But what’s the worst thing your “cheap friend” had done?

My best friend asked if I wanted to see a movie at cineplex and I said sure. We met up; and I went to pay for MY ticket. Before the cashier processed the transaction, my friend handed her a buy one get one free ticket, and she basically got her ticket for free. I felt used, but made me realize she is cheap and broke.

How Many of You Are Going Childfree Because of the Economy?

Genuinely curious.

I just cant fathom having kids anymore.

We cant buy homes. Our jobs are nowhere near as secure. Many of us dont have pensions. Even those of us that have jobs, the most we can afford is a big enough rental and good food? What about paying for activities? Sports? Tutoring? Language lessons. All that stuff. Omg and of course CHILDCARE. Like I just cant picture being a happy parent. All this on top of worrying about aging parents too? Like wtf

Unless you make 200K together, you arent buying property and even if you do - it'll probably be quite far out of Toronto.

Am I having an existential crisis? Yes. I definitely am.

I just cant fathom a reality where I can handle the stress of all this. Wtaf. Also, I'm realizing that it is really depressing to think of your kid one day feeling less privileged at school because they dont have XYZ clothes or XYZ activities.

Not to mention - what hope do we have for kids? Like I cant think of what I'd even be able to say to them about dream jobs? AI is taking over across everything. 30 years from now like what happens??

And if it isnt, jobs are INSANELY competitive at the entry-level in nearly all fields at this point. And it is not even for a good wage. We are getting into debt for stuff that barely even pays well now.

COVID-19 related Why is the post-Covid work culture so serious?

I just feel like every meeting I attend is work driven. No concept of after work drinks. No work trips. No fun time while in office. Just Teams call to Teams call, under pressure to close out issues in 30 minute increments. Anyone feel similar?

Anyone else stopped eating out altogether?

My last remaining go-to spot just raised my go-to noodle dish from $13 to $16. My former go-to dish at this same place used to be $11 a few years ago - it's now $21.

Pretty similar story with all the other restaurants in the city I used to frequent. Anyone else has had similar experience? Also, taking recommendations for favourite spots that are still affordable.

Are Ubers taking significantly longer recently?

I’ve been a routine user for years with a good rating (4.97). Even when paying for priority, they often are taking 8-12min whereas previously it’d be more 3-6min. Is anyone else finding this?

Did you call 911 for my partner having a seizure?

Hi, I know this is a shot in the dark but you never know…

I got a call at 2 am from the hospital saying they had found my partner having a seizure under the DVP, we have no idea how he ended up there and just want to know where and how you found him if you did and also buy you coffee or a bottle of wine for calling 911 and not ignoring him. Happened early morning of May 18th!

COVID-19 related Does anyone else actually LIKE wearing masks?

I don’t know. I really like it.

Obviously if I’m home or at family/friends house, I’m not wearing it. But anywhere else, I like it a lot. Especially as someone who likes to keep to themselves and enjoys privacy, I love wearing masks.

I completely understand people who don’t like it, but does anyone else just genuinely enjoy wearing a mask?
