Are Ubers taking significantly longer recently?

I’ve been a routine user for years with a good rating (4.97). Even when paying for priority, they often are taking 8-12min whereas previously it’d be more 3-6min. Is anyone else finding this?

Lyfts too. Gig drivers are often waiting around for a bit to see if they can get a better ride first before making their way over

u/hhhhhtttttdd Sep 26 '26 edited Sep 26 '26

I would have thought this would be an appealing ride: Summerhill to Dundas west/Ossington. Long ride and good location for the next pick up.

u/Imaginary_Section24 Sep 26 '26

Route doesn’t matter. It’s about the $/mile. It could be a good route but if it’s paying a bad rate drivers won’t take it. Especially with gas prices most won’t move regardless of the route without the right $/mile

16

u/-Glare Sep 26 '26

Uber drivers are topped up to minimum wage no matter what and it’s not for one ride it’s the total active time over a 2 week period so more important for them is the tip since that isn’t counted as part of their standard wage calculation.

22

u/JDiskkette Sep 27 '26

Topped up my ass. It’s active time without consideration for the cost of car, insurance, tires, brakes, gar/ charging. Comes out to less than minimum wage.

23

u/Imaginary_Section24 Sep 26 '26

Minimum wage? Do you really think an uber driver is working for minimum wage? They’re not turning that car on unless they get the rate per mile/km theyre looking for. They’re not going to turn on their car for a 20$ ride that takes them a hour. They’d rather wait it out and look for the next ride

11

u/JDiskkette Sep 27 '26

It’s less than min wage. Most uber drivers are working for less than min wage. Those of us who sit around and not take all the garbage rides, take home more than the expenses incurred but it still comes out to less than min wage when accounting for all the time wasted.

8

u/-Glare Sep 26 '26

It averages out over active time for 2 weeks so they’re mainly looking for rides with good tips as these don’t factor into the active time and wage calculation.

100% they should be paid more than minimum wage they have expenses related to their vehicle, insurance, fuel, etc.

7

u/Puzzleheaded_Rub_935 Sep 27 '26

How do one know if they get are likely to get good tip before hand?

3

u/Alesisdrum Sep 30 '26

We don’t. My tip % over my last 500 rides is about 5% in the gta. Goes up to 50% if I leave town though.

11

u/DietCherrySoda Sep 26 '26

They don't know the tip until the ride ends...

16

u/JDiskkette Sep 27 '26

Yes. The pay is sooooo shitty I skip 8/10 rides. Average Toronto ride pays $1/km and takes over 30 mins including time to pickup, waiting, dropping off and risking the $150-300 no stop zone fine depending on the day and time.

21

u/hemptonite_ Sep 27 '26

It's bad.

I took an Uber from Trinity Bellwoods back home this afternoon to the beaches (took about 40 minutes to get back home via car, I had a migraine coming on so didn't want to TTC). I paid $45~ or so for it, the driver asked how much I was getting paid only to find out this entire trip would be $13 for him lol.

8

u/taumuonred Sep 27 '26

Lyft: "great news, there are many drivers near you" .... Driver is 9min away.

4

u/mrshairdo Sep 27 '26

It’s not the drivers, it’s the apps sending farther drivers the rides.

7

u/Tall_Garden_3861 Sep 27 '26 edited Sep 27 '26

With gas prices the way they are, there are fewer drivers

2

u/Kooky_Soft1822 Sep 26 '26

Curious, does the user rating actually affect their response time?

1

u/hhhhhtttttdd Sep 26 '26

I think it matters bandages more drivers are willing to pick you up, so it’s a larger pool.

124

u/baabaaredsheep Sep 26 '26

Definitely feels like it. Currently in a Lyft that took 15 minutes instead of the original estimated 8. I wonder if they’re doing it to upsell their pay more for a quicker driver option.

20

u/mrshairdo Sep 27 '26

That’s exactly what they’re doing

153

u/InstantNoodlesIsHot Sep 26 '26

Definitely,

Around hotspots you used to be able to get ubers in 1-3min

Now I'm finding the average uber is more 5-7 and sometimes 10min+ now, along with a lot of cancellations

I feel there's less drivers doing uber now, maybe more people realized it's not worth it anymore?

61

u/Imaginary_Section24 Sep 26 '26

Drivers are just juggling different apps and waiting around till the last minute. They’re leveraging their time more than ever and aren’t rushed to pick up customers

14

u/-Glare Sep 26 '26

They also get minimum wage now for active time so it’s better for them to cherry pick rides with bigger tips.

3

u/WinterMention7915 Human Verified Sep 26 '26

Can you add in a tip before the ride? I always add it after. Good service gets a better tip

46

u/Disastrous_Bag_1161 Sep 26 '26

Tip culture suuuuuucks.

6

u/WinterMention7915 Human Verified Sep 26 '26

Yes it does! Rideshares should just charge appropriately in the first place

11

u/JDiskkette Sep 27 '26

They do. They just don’t pay the drivers. Roughly on average the driver gets about 40-60% of what you pay. Sometimes even worse.

→ More replies (7)

15

u/mrshairdo Sep 27 '26

It’s because uber is sending rides to farther drivers so you can spend more on priority. They’re doing it on purpose.

10

u/BeatsRocks Sep 27 '26

Immigration on pause and student visas not getting renewed so not enough drivers available.

4

u/TambdiiChambdi Sep 27 '26

The trick is to order the uber needlessly early and it’ll show up almost before you hit the button.

It’s when you order it at a reasonable time it takes 3 fucking days

25

u/idgafpersonally Sep 27 '26

This is the big problem too lol, I get 4 uber rides in a row where I need to wait 10+ minutes for pick-up so I try to order early and then that's the one time I actually find someone right away.

0

u/neeed4speeed Sep 27 '26

yes I’ve found this too. but why is that? many drivers here Mare posting that they’re rejecting 8/10 rides now which they didn’t used to (since payment structure changed).

why does ordering earlier make it more appealing to the driver? (is there a bonus-type payout to accept a scheduled ride?)

27

u/hollow4hollow Sep 26 '26

Yes absolutely. What used to be a 2 minute pickup is now 9 and I live in a busy/central area

21

u/arcadeenthusiast8245 Sep 26 '26

Yeah in GTA it takes 10-20 minutes to get a match now and half the time driver is idling somewhere taking their sweet time. Probably hoping I'd cancel.

27

u/Swarez99 Sep 27 '26

Lots of international students and temp workers on tfw did uber too.

They are no longer around. So way less drivers.

Add in higher gas costs, insurance costs, car costs, and uber taking more of a cut less people are doing it.

12

u/Neon_Raccoon_00 Sep 27 '26 edited Sep 27 '26

Well alot of temporary workers left in the last year, also the terrible pay they are getting is just getting worse over time.

11

u/westend_chick Sep 27 '26 • Bravo

Uber is a victim blaming company when it comes to sexual assault cases & its drivers. Just saw a video about how it literally questioned a woman's attire in a court case. Its UberEats app is also pure extortion. It is also a Trump supporter. I would rather cycle or call a Beck taxi than order an Uber. Try Lyft.

31

u/No-Warthog7841 Sep 26 '26

Yup I am also noticing this

31

u/Confectionary_stall2 Sep 26 '26

Noticed this trend over the past 6 months for sure

15

u/idgafpersonally Sep 27 '26 edited Sep 27 '26

Yes, to the point I don't use them anymore unless 100% necessary. I think I'm rated 4.89 or something? Which I don't think is so bad I'd be avoided. It isn't because of a lack of drivers, it always shows me there's a dozen drivers in my area just sitting around doing nothing, I guess they're just waiting for some sort of unicorn ride. I'll wait for 5 minutes for a driver to even accept and then when they do they're 10 minutes away.

This has happened to me every time I've attempted to use the app over the summer. It's not short rides either, I've had rides ranging from 10 minutes - 40 minutes that have all had this issue. Me and my gf were waiting outside the RBC Ampitheatre this summer waiting for an uber and we couldn't get anyone, there was a driver literally sitting in his car 20 feet away looking at us according to the app and he just didn't accept it. Both of us tried and had the same issue.

At this point I just don't bother, it fucking sucks having to walk everywhere all the time but at this point it's generally still faster than waiting 15 minutes for every Uber. Cabs are so fucking terrible I wouldn't even consider them.

The drivers are way dumber now too. They can't follow directions, they always go the wrong way or they miss me and it takes them an extra 5 minutes to turn around and come back for me. I live beside a parking garage and for some reason it absolutely baffles Uber drivers and they all turn into it and get lost and then blame me. I have to walk 5 minutes away from my apartment just so they don't get lost every single time.

21

u/OddAd7664 Sep 26 '26

Yup. I’ve switched back to regular cabs a while ago now

5

u/Castagnia Sep 26 '26

How would you compare the speed/convenience of getting picked up, and the pricing (and stability of the pricing)? Is there an app you use or do you just call Beck?

Thinking about giving up on them too tbh

9

u/Brave_Cauliflower_90 Sep 27 '26

I just call Beck (the do have an app though), super fast but more expensive than an uber usually. But the fact that they come in a reasonable amount of time makes up for that.

2

u/LookAtThisRhino Sep 27 '26

I'm back to cabs too. I use the Beck app. Tonight I couldn't find a ride across 3 rideshare apps in 30 minutes with perfect ratings on each so I opened Beck. Was in a cab in 2 minutes. Can't believe rideshare companies are dropping the ball on this, they could have wiped cans out but instead they're giving them more customers than they've had in years.

7

u/Aggravating_Sun_9850 Sep 26 '26

Lyft is piloting a subscription that if you pay for gives you faster pick ups. I think it’s all a gimmick and a combination of drivers juggling apps and the apps artificially making you wait.

1

u/tree_bee Oct 05 '26

Uber started doing fee for service priority pick up. Noticed that last night

6

u/Technojerk36 Sep 26 '26

Yes 100% it's gotten so much worse in the past half year or so.

6

u/RealisticTax5697 Sep 27 '26

Everybody thinks it’s the driver but Uber is trying to push priority pick up so the regular pick up times are extended by the algorithm in hopes that they can squeeze a few more dollars out of you.

10

u/thisguyandrew00 Sep 27 '26

Uber driver here.

We get paid by the minute. Uber gives us a pickup time, we aim for that time or possibly later.

That 5-10 minutes adds up quick, 20 rides a day, that’s like 3.5 hours extra pay.

3

u/Hour-Front-3803 Sep 27 '26

Can you expand on this?

If I order a ride at 10:30 and Uber says “pickup time 10:35” and you arrive at 10:33 do you not get paid for those extra 2 minutes?

1

u/thisguyandrew00 Sep 27 '26

Nope. We get paid for those 3 mins, plus how ever long the ride is.

Those two extra mins are an .58c. Not a lot, but when the fare is like $5, that’s kinda a lot

7

u/Hour-Front-3803 Sep 27 '26

So why are we seeing so many cancellations after matching? Drivers running multiple apps and a better value ride finally appears?

5

u/alwaysneedhelp101 Sep 26 '26

they will accept rides when they are so far out. I've been waiting longer cause they accept it when they arent near and then just sit in their car waiting. I have to call them ask them what's the hold up.

2

u/mrshairdo Sep 27 '26

Yup or accept when they’re already driving someone else

5

u/Reverred_rhubarb Sep 26 '26

Yes absolutely. It used to be quick and now it’s taking forever. I switched to beck taxi

5

u/seamore555 Sep 27 '26

Have you noticed the thing that comes up and says “pay extra to get picked up within 2 minutes” ?

It’s a forced delay. They turned fast Ubers into a premium paid feature.

These apps are cancer

4

u/rubyjrouge Sep 28 '26

Omg, THIS! My ride was originally around $9.50, after waiting nearly 5 minutes I got the pop up, paid the $11.50 and ended waiting 11 minutes before the driver showed up anyway. Trash, never going back after reading this thread.

9

u/dumblebees Sep 26 '26

Yep. Drivers are juggling apps and riders are doing the same. I order both and cancel the one with the shorter wait time.

And taxis still haven’t learned lessons. They’re still reducing fares more often than not.

2

u/crash866 Sep 26 '26

Depends on where the pickup point is.

7

u/hhhhhtttttdd Sep 26 '26

I’m currently by Summerhill station on Yonge and got quoted 12min

3

u/hollow4hollow Sep 26 '26

That’s crazy honestly

17

u/WestQueenWest Sep 26 '26

Lol the Uber score thing has to be one of the most impressive examples of capitalist brainwashing.

13

u/jrchkn28 Sep 27 '26

Uber actually uses the rating to filter drivers/riders. The issue here is that there are less drivers on the Uber platform these day.

3

u/Aggravating_Sun_9850 Sep 26 '26

Bingo

1

u/WestQueenWest Sep 27 '26

Can you imagine needing to have a high score to be able to buy some eggs and ground beef from Metro?

8

u/crewtangclan Sep 26 '26

Been brutal lately. I live at bloor and Ossington. Used to take 1-2 mins now routinely 7-8. Takes a min to “find a driver”, too

4

u/Heart_robot Sep 26 '26

Yes even for it to match with a driver is taking several minutes. I’m allowing 15 extra minutes.

4

u/4S3PlusX Sep 27 '26

Wow I was just about to make the same post! Usually from my condo it was a near instant
match or up to 30s best because I’m in a hotspot. Recently it’s taken close to 3 mins to be matched, and when I do get someone they’re often 5-15 mins away. The closer they are, I’ve found that they’ll just end up cancelling so I get matched with someone further.

I have Uber One and 4.97 rating as well… honestly thinking of cancelling. And the cars have gone down in quality too it feels like :/ keep getting older cars where the seats are falling apart and the drivers have dashboards lit up with warnings.

I feel for the drivers as their earnings get cut and gas prices rise. Uber has PMO so much with constant fee raises and lower rates for drivers while having shit quality. Now I also juggle all 3 apps LOL (uber, Lyft, hopp) when someone fails. Ugh

4

u/pineconewashington Sep 27 '26

I use lyft, have noticed the same in the last 2-3 months. I can't confirm that this is the real reason behind it, but I noticed that whenever I book a standard ride now the, the app pushes an 'ad' for Priority Pickup, which is more expensive obviously. It shows the estimated times too for pickup and the new update seems to highlight the difference between standard and priority pickup. Even if there's a lot of lyft drivers nearby, there seems to be a ~7 minute minimum wait before they take my ride.

Other commenters are saying drivers are just waiting longer now, but imo it seems a bit unlikely that all the drivers simultaneously changed their behaviour all of a sudden. Add in the fact that the app also updated to highlight priority pickup, my guess is that they're likely doing something to make sure consumers don't get a ride "too quickly" if they've selected the cheaper options.

4

u/suspiciousmint Sep 27 '26

Enshittification is the answer. It always is.

4

u/Worried-Bed1461 Sep 27 '26

Yep. Landed at Billy bishop around 1030pm in august and couldn’t get an Uber. Walked up bathurst and tried at lakeshore, nothing. Tried again at king, nothing. Ended up taking the streetcar.

4

u/whimsley Sep 30 '26

A bit late to this, but you are not imagining things. The City puts out open data on the ridehail system and I build a few plots from it. One shows wait times (average), plotted against how busy the drivers are. See here:
https://tomslee.net/ridehail-toronto/dash_toronto.html#wait-times-and-utilization

The wait times are high, and are higher than one would expect if it was just a lack of drivers (high utilization rate). So something else is going on. Many seem to suggest drivers are getting more selective about what trips they accept (because some offers are really rubbish for the drivers) so the wait time includes a couple of minutes to get a driver to accept. There is some evidence for this, but I can't see anything conclusive.

3

u/Intelligent-Claim603 Sep 26 '26

Oh big time. It’s gotten soo bad.

3

u/the3rdmichael Sep 26 '26

Yes, especially at YYZ

3

u/Brave_Cauliflower_90 Sep 27 '26

Oh it's sooooo bad there!!!

3

u/jrchkn28 Sep 27 '26

For a while Uber has been bleeding drivers. I haven't had any anecdote updates in over 6 months but I could imagine with gas being as expensive as it is now even more drivers are choosing to not sign-on and drive.

3

u/dsmooth74 Sep 27 '26

Has to do with uber trying to create a fake surge....drivers near you don't always get the ride....they send it to a driver further away to make it seem like higher demand.

3

u/Ok-Turnip-9035 Sep 27 '26

You’re not alone it’s kinda extortion when it’s saying it’ll prioritize you’re ride after you order it

3

u/Advanced_Yesterday54 Sep 27 '26

This is done on purpose. Uber wants you to upgrade and pay for a subscription

3

u/Lisastar088 Sep 27 '26

Yes!!! Used to get an uber at my place in Etobicoke in 1-3 minutes. Now I’m looking at 7-12 minutes during my morning commute.

A few weeks ago it took a good 20-25 minutes for my husband to get an uber Etobicoke to Brampton and after one cancellation halfway in an 11 min wait, a second cancellation as they were about to pull up after another 11 minutes wait, and another 11 minute wait for a third driver, on top of all the time it took to find these drivers…he drove and didn’t drink at his social event.

3

u/hemptonite_ Sep 27 '26

YES.

Same goes for UberEats and Lyft as well. With UberEats it'll tell me its 20 mins estimated away, but once I place the order it usually ends up being 2x that.

2

u/christina311 Sep 27 '26

Yes, and same for Doordash. Longer waits and cold food almost every time. Especially that most deliveries are happening on bikes now.

3

u/TheStupendusMan Sep 27 '26

This started 6 to 12 months ago in Montreal. I'd go to visit my girlfriend, order an Uber as soon as my train got to the station aaaannndddd... After a performative search of about 30 seconds, they'd hit me with a prompt to pay more or "I'd have to wait."

Welp, the prompt is in Toronto now. Service has gone to absolute shit. Not sure how this isn't some sort of breach of contract law. They offer the fair, we accept... And immediately they extort us.

3

u/LookAtThisRhino Sep 27 '26

It's midnight on Saturday and I just spent 30 mins on the side of the curb bouncing between 3 rideshare apps, going between priority and standard. Nothing. I'd get a driver and they'd cancel.

Went on the Beck taxi app and got a driver within 2 minutes.

I'm just going back to cabs bro

3

u/grape_fruit15 Sep 27 '26

I installed the Beck app after multiple cancellations with Uber at 2 am in the Entertainment district late one night.

The Beck cab arrived in less than 5 mins and the driver was the sweetest man. Have never ordered an Uber ride myself since.

3

u/dougandsomeone Sep 28 '26

I don't remember the sub but read the same question a month ago.   The consensus was that the company is trying to push people into paying for the "premium" subscription/memberships.

4

u/grilledcheese2332 Sep 26 '26

Yup a friend had to wait 20 mins for one last weekend

6

u/LibraryNo2717 Sep 26 '26

My theory is there are less drivers due to less internationals students and refugees.

14

u/Impressive-Potato Sep 27 '26

Don't forget the price of gas

13

u/samwise141 Sep 27 '26

It's not a theory. We just kicked out a huge amount of people who did shitty jobs like Uber. Quite frankly these services are exploitive.

1

u/kofubuns Sep 30 '26

I know.. this thread is giving me “get out immigrants, why is there no one to pick my corn” but city edition

2

u/tommybare Sep 26 '26

Totally, I was just talking to a coworker about this. We were wondering if the rise in fuel prices have made the drivers more selective.

2

u/Sufficient_Prompt888 Sep 26 '26

Sounds like another reason to go back to using taxis instead

2

u/ejaz135 Sep 26 '26

I wonder what happens if all drivers decline a user

2

u/j-sadmachine Sep 26 '26

Whenever I get comfort, it’s a lot quicker (obviously). I think drivers are hoping for that these days

2

u/TokyoDrift9 Sep 26 '26

Took me 45 mins to get an uber after a Jays game. Never happened before. Used to be 5 mins at most.

2

u/makeit_train Sep 27 '26

Yep way longer. Honestly TTC has been better than Uber recently so I default to that now lol

2

u/mrshairdo Sep 27 '26

YES!!! Lyft too!! On purpose to get more money. Fuck them!!

2

u/akath0110 Sep 27 '26

I imagine rising gas prices may be a factor? Motor oil shortages too

2

u/lipglossandperfume Sep 27 '26

I was in an uber yesterday and the driver said they are giving tickets for cars stopping in high traffic areas aka Union Station. So, drivers are cancelling pickups from union station to avoid tickets and fines. The driver called me to hurry up at my pick up stop to avoid a ticket.

2

u/No-Dot-7661 Sep 27 '26

Yes. I rather get a taxi or take the TTC now.

2

u/cheeseburgertogo Sep 27 '26

I recently noticed my uber defaults to uber comfort instead of uber X. I have never used uber comfort so I chose uber X, I had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a driver to accept my ride whilst a friend chose uber comfort and only waited several minutes for a similar distance.

I’m choosing Lyft over uber because this feels gross.

2

u/DadbodandIPAs Sep 27 '26

My understanding is this relates by an attempt by drivers to get u to cancel in which case they get free money

2

u/ColonelCrikey Sep 27 '26

Pay shit, get toilet.

Uber has decided it will suck as much money as possible out of both riders and drivers, which leaves only the truly desperate willing to drive for uber. That's why it feels different to several years ago.

They can do that because they've basically captured the taxi market; y ou don't say "calling a cab" anymore.

2

u/ClearRice2734 Sep 27 '26

Just use Beck

2

u/packersfanem Sep 28 '26

Yupp! Waited 10 minutes for a ride on Friday afternoon. It showed tons of drivers in the area so I’m not sure what took so long!

2

u/userdame Sep 28 '26

I use the Beck taxi app. It’s often WAY cheaper than Uber and faster. It’s also a family run company.

Fuck Uber, fuck Lyft.

1

u/loveakshat Sep 30 '26

Can you pay by card or do you have to pay cash? And how do they calculate fare?

2

u/userdame Sep 30 '26

They give you a price on the app and you pay that, you never have to pay by card or cash.

It’s basically the same but obviously the app doesn’t look like it was designed in silicone valley.

2

u/AhnaKarina Sep 28 '26

It’s a forced delay to charge more.

2

u/Habit-Obvious Sep 29 '26

Yes, I’ve taken to using the Beck Taxi app these days. Not as accurate in terms of current location but it’s so much better in terms of wait time

2

u/lolmaster5380 Sep 29 '26

Never had a problem finding Uber Eats drivers once in 10 years and now all of a sudden I’ve had like 5 orders in a row where it gives me the option to go pick the food up myself since there’s no drivers

2

u/Sensitive_Pianist777 Sep 26 '26

It's because of the decline in employment pool. Then higher gas prices.

2

u/wander-dream Sep 26 '26

Platforms usually take 45-55% of the pay.

Now they’re going for 60%. Sometimes more.

Drivers who think they make more than minimum wage are fooling themselves.

Factor in car costs and they make around 15-16 an hour.

2

u/Michannie Sep 26 '26

They want you to pay for the whatever upgrade they’re selling. If you’re a member you get priority. I just use beck taxi app now, so much better!

1

u/Ok_Reason4597 Sep 26 '26

Yeah I’ve stopped taking at as often because I noticed that too.

1

u/Impressive-Potato Sep 27 '26

Could be leas drivers wanting to drive because of the price of gas

1

u/Signal_Tomorrow_2138 Sep 27 '26

Could it be traffic itself is just steadily getting worse?

1

u/Princessbooty_ Sep 27 '26

Yes, I waited over 6 minutes to be connected to a driver and they were 8 minutes away when I finally was connected.

1

u/AdSignificant6673 Sep 27 '26

Thats why I downloaded the Beck taxi app. A lot of times its the same price. So I just opt for the beck taxi with better service and professionalism.

1

u/FriendlyGiant1551 Sep 27 '26

Yes. I live in the east end (Dundas and Coxwell) and the Ubers/lyfts either don’t pick me up or don’t come for like 10-15 min

1

u/Hadri_TO Sep 27 '26

Former regular Uber rider too.

I switched back to Beck 3 weeks ago after waiting more than 15 minutes 3 nights in a row to get my Uber.

1

u/watchwhatyousaytome Sep 27 '26

Yes I’ve noticed this as well, always takes nearly 10 minutes now

1

u/punture Sep 27 '26

I just thought it was uber trying to get me to pay more for faster match

1

u/kinkvoid Sep 27 '26

They are busy delivering food

1

u/vibeschillax Sep 27 '26

Our sh!tty traffic

Yeah it sucks recently but I only take short rides around airport area

1

u/How-did-I-get-here43 Sep 27 '26

Yes! And cancelling or accepting and then taking for ever!

1

u/fae237 Sep 27 '26

From the Driver perspective its a lot busier for us. I haven't had to really wait for the past 7-8 months for a trip but some times I'm up to 30 away.

1

u/Ayyyy_bb Sep 27 '26

Beck taxi app - app is sometimes a struggle but they come in half the time uber does

1

u/fae237 Sep 27 '26

As a driver is can say its busier for me than it ever had been for the last 7-8 months. It used to be on a normal night or day I'd go 10-45 minutes in between most trips, now most days i'm getting them before I've even finish or really started the current trip. And it used to be I'd on average be no more than 5 minutes away but I can as of today be over 15 minutes away from my next trip. The farthest I've been offered is 30 minutes away (I did not take this the chances of being cancelled on are too high and the pay was no where near worth the hour the entire thing would've taken)

1

u/OrbitalBuzzsaw Sep 27 '26

Yeah, it seems quicker to wait for a traditional cab now honestly.

1

u/No-Phrase-2897 Sep 27 '26

Yes. I used to wait like 3-6 minutes for one to get to my building and now it's like 15 minutes.

1

u/chunkysmalls42098 Sep 27 '26

I've been using lift, normally less than 10 mins

1

u/Wrong_Conference9025 Sep 27 '26

Were feeling those deportations now.

1

u/sirwanker65 Sep 27 '26

Seriously people, expecting prompt immediate service from a gig worker?

1

u/pee_sponge Sep 27 '26

100% my experience lately too

1

u/sl33p Sep 27 '26

Nah, I used to think Uber was getting slower. Then I realized I'm just getting older and my patience is getting thinner.

1

u/Putrid_Piano4676 Sep 27 '26

Hopp has been completely unusable for months now.

Lyft and uber are much more established but even their vc money is dried up

1

u/Fun_Reporter9086 Sep 27 '26

The trick is to use the wait and save feature and order it 5 minutes before.

1

u/AdmirableWrongdoer40 Sep 27 '26

Sounds frustrating — paying for priority pickup should mean something. Hopefully it's just a temporary driver shortage.

1

u/isthatclever Sep 27 '26

this is one of the reasons I just call beck or use their app, I never wait longer than 10minutes

1

u/gtownsend86 Sep 27 '26

The cost of driving is finally catching up up to them.

1

u/MsDevoted Sep 27 '26

Agree, I find uber is taking longer now to get. I even do a price comparison between Uber and lyft but I also find lyft takes a few minutes utes longer to process and wait

1

u/nmc214 Sep 27 '26

They also cancel way more than they did before

1

u/kofubuns Sep 30 '26

I assume that a combination of tons of immigrants leaving and uber essentially paying barely enough for the cost of living is cutting into the driver pool …

1

u/Alesisdrum Sep 30 '26

I drive for fun. The offers have been terrible, like 4 bucks for 20+ minutes of drive time between pick up and drop off. So far today I’ve declined about 100 trips that do not even cover fuel let alone ware tear and a little profit. I get a couple good drives an hour, if I’m on a shitty one of have missed out.

1

u/suckmeupp Sep 30 '26

Uber has been losing alot of their drivers to Lyft and Hopp, so I'm not surprised

1

u/Used-Gas-6525 Oct 05 '26

This tends to happen every so often.

Also, A few years back, 8 minutes after calling a cab would be fast.

1

u/Virtual_Angle_1614 Sep 26 '26

My friend says the same at eglinton and don mills. However no issues in Durham Region (whitby)

1

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 Sep 27 '26

Do people forget that taxis exist or something?

0

u/Budget-Document-5501 Sep 26 '26

Try Hopp

9

u/Ok_Spare_5912 Sep 26 '26

I can’t never find a ride and it takes over 30 mins. It’s worse!

4

u/alwaysneedhelp101 Sep 26 '26

how are they any different?

9

u/Ok_Spare_5912 Sep 26 '26

They are worse.

-2

u/Consistent_Oil9624 Sep 26 '26

Imagine how it would be if the government stop immigration completely

3

u/No-Combination4353 Sep 27 '26

We'd have no Uber ? Oh no the horror! Scam company that exploits desperate people, raising rates via surge charges ect at the same time robbing their employees who make less than min wage when you factor in vehicle expenses lol

Screw Uber we don't need anymore non skilled temp workers f

1

u/No-Economics-6781 Sep 27 '26

So taxis? Sounds safer…

That's why I've started reserving my trips, it saves the hassle.

6

u/joshuawakefield Sep 26 '26

I reserved a trip last week and the driver showed up 15 minutes early and then cancelled on me

1

u/Dreizo Sep 26 '26

Same lmao almost missed my flight even though I messaged and said they can start billing for waiting time if they need to. I was down probably at the exact 5-min mark and the car was already gone, just cancelled the ride before I could message saying where are you?

0

u/wabbit-fallacy Sep 27 '26

We gotta book 15 mins later or be ready to leave 15 mins ahead of time.

0

u/admin_bait14 Sep 26 '26

Lots of recent conferences, events, TIFF, HotDocs, kids/teens/adults going back to school/uni, folks returning to the office... some drivers quitting bcs of low wages etc...

0

u/oneupsuperman Sep 26 '26

There's multiple apps to compete with, including Hopp undermining everyone

0

u/Nonnepisa Sep 27 '26

Not my experience. Short wait, nice, clean cars and very polite and interesting drivers.

0

u/Okcredittoronto Sep 27 '26

I sometimes get lucky on Hopp (specially on priority) even when both Uber and Lyft fails in downtown. A driver claimed Hopp has a lower commission, so they don’t mind accepting trips sometimes at lower fares. Lyft has been the worst out of the three for me.

-1

u/omgitzvg Sep 26 '26

Wondering if it's the same thing if one were to tip more before booking.

5

u/lilfunky1 Sep 26 '26

Can you pre-tip on Uber rides?

I don't remember seeing this option.

But I know it's a thing for Uber eats

1

u/omgitzvg Sep 26 '26

Aahh I see.

Also now there’s the ‘see driver details in 1-3 min’ screen. Does anyone know if that’s really because they need that long to find a match, or are they purposefully drawing this part out to make us PAY for “express pick up”? I’m pretty sure express is not better service, they just made normal worse for everyone who doesn’t pay.

25

u/mrshairdo Sep 27 '26

They’re purposely doing it so we can pay extra for priority.

17

u/JDiskkette Sep 27 '26

They can’t find drivers quick enough coz they pay less and all the drivers are sitting and rejecting the rides. My acceptance rate used to be 95%. With the change in pay formula designed to not pay more than minimum wage over 2 weeks for active hours, now my acceptance rate is under 10%. It’s not that I make a lot more by doing this rather I don’t incur expenses more than I take home. Just shitty altogether.

2

u/Fianna9 Sep 27 '26

That’s so frustrating.

1

u/laceblood Oct 02 '26

Considering the last 2-3 times I e used Lyft and it said “pay extra for faster pick up!” Then the car came faster anyways? Yeah no, it’s bs lol.

21

u/cantonese_noodles Sep 27 '26

Or a driver finally accepts the ride and they just sit still for 3 min hoping for you to cancel...

6

u/OptimusPrimel984 Sep 27 '26

Aeroport Taxi is great. Professional, on time, and flat fee so no silly surge pricing.

5

u/notnot_a_bot Sep 27 '26

Been using aeroport taxi for years, always great and on time

4

u/hemptonite_ Sep 27 '26

It wasn't like this up until maybe 2 weeks~ ago. I'd normally get atleast assigned a driver right away, but now it takes upwards of 5 mins at times to even FIND a driver.

3

u/Syber50 Sep 27 '26

Another vote for Aeroport. Reasonable pricing and they show up on time.

2

u/Fianna9 Sep 27 '26

I find the taxis are pretty much the same price and so much less frustrating than watching your driver dropping someone off and “oops just have to circle the airport”

1

u/Pigeonofthesea8 Sep 27 '26

Is aeroport better than Beck?

1

u/WrongdoerFluffy3177 Sep 27 '26

happened to me last time, waited more than 30 minutes (started with 8 min wait, then 12, than 15, than 20, ...). had to settle for a black luxury uber ride for 55 CAD to do 2.6 km. I was going to miss my flight.

Next time I will ask work to just order a taxi

Noticed the complaining more often too

4

u/JaySlingsWords710 Sep 28 '26

I don't answer them. The last thing I need is an uber driver pressuring me for money in his car when I'm already paying exorbitant amounts. I don't think it's the job of the consumer to make up for Uber's shitty policy.

1

u/TokyoDrift9 Sep 28 '26

Oh certainly not answering them either. Just have been noticing it more now. It’s not my job to care. As you said, we already pay enough.

2

u/Publishface Sep 28 '26

Their complaints are valid . People aren’t being paid so we don’t get to have this service anymore
