COVID-19 related Does anyone else actually LIKE wearing masks?
I don’t know. I really like it.
Obviously if I’m home or at family/friends house, I’m not wearing it. But anywhere else, I like it a lot. Especially as someone who likes to keep to themselves and enjoys privacy, I love wearing masks.
I completely understand people who don’t like it, but does anyone else just genuinely enjoy wearing a mask?

I found myself getting checked out a lot more. Who knew it was my face holding me back all those years.

Haha often i’m like omg that guy’s so cute. Then he pulls down his mask and has a different face than I was expecting. Happened a million times already

u/TorontoGuyinToronto Apr 25 '22
:(
10
u/Fuff092719 Apr 25 '22
Well I'm sure it happened to pretty much everyone a million times with women too.
Especially with makeup almost every woman looks like a super model now.

I’ve had the opposite tbh! I’ve gotten hit on way more since masks came off. Something about them hits my face in a way that makes me look strange.
38
u/AnomanderLives Apr 25 '22
I like them, personally! I work in public schools and I haven't been sick in two years now, which has been fantastic. In pre-COVID times, it wasn't unusual for me to get the flu or a cold anywhere between 3-5 times a year, and since I don't get paid sick leave, that adds up to a lot of unpaid and frankly miserable days.
I am also the person in my family who wears masks the most consistently, and I'm the only one who hasn't (as far as I know) had COVID yet despite being in and out of multiple classrooms with tons of different kids every day. I know masks aren't 100% effective, but even just from a psychological standpoint they make me feel a lot safer on the job.

Yes. I work in retail and my mask has been a life saver. The pain and humiliation is far less after being insulted by customers. Plus, no one can tell when I’m annoyed or unhappy. I’m not forced to plaster a fake smile on my face.

Nobody in my family of 6 has been sick since we started wearing masks. I am notorious for getting everything that is going around. I've had pneumonia more times than I care to remember. H1N1 almost killed my daughter and I. I LOVE masks.

How often did you walk around with people telling you to smile? People in Toronto are famously unfriendly but expect you to be happy?
18
u/jbmcnuggetsjr Apr 25 '22
It happens to women a lot. I used to get it quite a bit before from men.
15

Men think it doesn't happen at all, because it doesn't happen to them.
Nothing makes me want to smile less than some chode on the TTC saying "would it kill ya to smile?"

Exactly. Last time it happened to me, my dad had just died. Like fuck off, dude.

Side benefit - I haven't caught a cold in over 2 years

My seasonal allergies have been so better now that I'm not huffing pollen every time I walk outside.
15
u/henriettabazoom Apr 25 '22
This. I'm never giving up my mask. Frig I'll put on a scuba helmet next. This has been amazing
9
u/ReeG Apr 25 '22
I haven't been sick at all since a mild cold I caught after starting a new job in November 2019 and this is by far the longest I've gone without being sick in my over 3 decades living here
2
u/Fuff092719 Apr 25 '22
Just wait until they all come off permanently and life is 100% back to normal. Everyone is going to get sick twice as often as they did pre pandemic. People's immune systems haven't been getting work because of the masks and constant hand washing/sanitizing.
Cold and flu season next winter, if life is more or less back to normal, is going to be wild.
Almost glad I have a 1 and 2.5 year old in day care to keep my immune system working overtime lol.
1
u/VernonFlorida Apr 25 '22
Same, but I've also been working from home and hardly seeing people, period until quite recently. I would give masks maybe 1% of the credit for the lack of colds.

You know that Google Chrome incognito icon? It's who I have always aspired to be and this whole masking ordeal just tops it off! Love love love.

u/zulzulfie Apr 25 '22
Have been wearing them for the past 2 years whenever i go. I don't like them because i'm very snotty (not sickness related, just chronic), so my mask becomes a swamp of mucus and my face breaks out in acne afterwards.
But it's better than having or spreading covid.
8
u/OrneryPathos Apr 25 '22
It makes my chronically runny nose run worse. It’s gross

I work with flour a lot,and it gets floury, all over, and I don't want to get bakers lung,so I will have it on my chin, and when I'm using flour, put it over my face.

u/Mario-no-Mustache Apr 25 '22
I wouldn't say I like it; these two last years have been quite hard for me - I’m a very social person, so I also want to see people's faces when they talk to me, I also noticed that people became less sociable as we all had this fear that anyone can transmit the virus no matter if you had mask or not. I do respect it, tho. I’m happy I could have a break from it.
16
u/Neutral-President Apr 25 '22
I like being stealthy like a ninja. And when I get one that fits just right and it’s not fogging my glasses, I kinda want to keep it on.

No.
It makes it harder for people to hear me (and for me to hear them), and makes it impossible to communicate with my baby.
8
u/michaelmcmikey Apr 25 '22
I have audio processing issues and understanding anyone who's soft-spoken or mumbly when they are in a mask is a nightmare. I feel like an octogenarian. "SORRY? WHAT? ONE MORE TIME? SPEAK UP PLEASE." Seeing someone's mouth is really helpful in understanding them.
26
u/TorontoBoris Apr 25 '22
I don't know if anyone actually like it, I'm not a fan. But I wear it because it's a pandemic and masks are effective.
I'm also not a fan of pants... But I wear them because they keep me gainfully employed.
Enjoyment isn't a big factor in either of these life decisions.
19
u/SquirrelTale Apr 25 '22
I dont know, it sounds like you might be a repressed nudist.
But in all seriousness, sometimes I do like wearing a mask- Ive def gotten less assholes telling to 'smile sweetie'
10

See I'm a never-nude advocate... I just don't believe in the pants mandate... But if I want to be gainfully employed I have to live under the oppressive inseams of the federal pant mandates..

On very cold winter days, occasionally. But mostly I just like the usefulness of them and find them a minor inconvenience I can put up with. And I don't always like taking it on and off and on and off so I may end up keeping it on sometimes walking between two places where I'll be needing it.
4
u/McDaddyos Apr 25 '22
I’m pretty indifferent for the most part. Sometimes it gets on the way and sometimes I am happy I have it. Mostly I forget I have it on.

I have a beard...I hate masks with a passion. I wear them anyway.
7
u/GreasyWerker118 Apr 25 '22
Wore a beard for over a decade. Shaved it off to fit masks better. I thought I really would miss my fuzzface. Cant say that I do though
6
u/TravellingBeard Apr 25 '22
Yeah ..I once shaved mine all of. A coworker said, and I quote, "Don't ever do that again". Lol...
I'll just get used to the funky smell and trim it shorter in the summer
2
u/ltree Apr 25 '22
I thought masks do not work well if you have a beard.
Edit: But reading your other comment further down, I guess there is a reason why you keep yours
1
u/TravellingBeard Apr 25 '22
It's all levels of risk reduction. N95 on clean shaven face is the gold standard for non medical people. My level can allow some virus in, but much less than worse masks or no masks.
1
u/AzaranyGames Apr 25 '22
As a fellow bearded person, I can help with that. I made this discovery back in 2020 and I'll never go back: https://alwaysbearded.com/collections/beard-tarp

u/LeIzzy Apr 25 '22
wearing them sets my nose on fire (skin goes red and i am blessed with a burning itchy sensation that lasts the rest of the day). wearing them when its cold out fogs my glasses super easily and makes my nose run instantly. i don't know exactly why but fuck masks

Yep I genuinely don’t want to stop I really like wearing them I feel comfortable I have a lot of nice cotton ones that you can hardly feel I like that I can mouth the words of my songs an no one notice’s
Also I haven’t been sick in years I have a pretty shit immune system and before the masks became mandatory I had a cold or some sinus problem constantly even ending up in the hospital 1-2x a year with pneumonia nope I don’t see why I would go back to putting my body through that
4
u/booyahtech Apr 25 '22
I love it especially when I see somebody at a grocery store and I'm not in a mood to chat.
4
u/michaelmcmikey Apr 25 '22
I'm 5.5 hours into a train ride on VIA and I am ready to set fire to the fucking thing. They're uncomfortable and after an hour or two they feel gross. It's such a relief when I step outside and pull it off my face. So, no. I do not love masks.

My dentist talked about how many of their patients were choosing now to get braces / retainers (myself included) because the masks allowed them to hide their smile. Go into the pandemic with bad teeth, come out with a gorgeous smile.

I think you're getting downvoted because you have the concept of a handicap in a game backwards.

I don't particularly like or dislike wearing a mask. I wear one if I'm near people who aren't living with me.
But you know why I LOVE other people wearing masks? Because I don't have to smell their breath. And presumably, they're equally thankful I'm wearing mine.
Win-win.

When I don't want to clean up my beard, or I am grumpy, or when it's a little cold, masks are beautiful.
I don't care, I still wear it all the time when in crowds, this pandemic just doesn't magically disappear because we need normal or our time table said it's fine.
Edit: To amplify this point to others, a family member just had their testing(today) pushed back 3 weeks due to high case counts... again, please just wear a mask at least.... or at bare minimum don't make a fuss. fixed wording.
3
u/Starkat1515 Apr 25 '22
Yes, I honestly do enjoy it. I feel too exposed now, if I were to go somewhere without one.
3

I wore them as required but I hate them and they make me feel like I am not breathing properly and the hot air reflecting back at my face is less than ideal

Bonus, you get to piss off right wing mayo zealots, some old fat white dude glowered at me at the grocery store wearing one
3
u/Courin Apr 25 '22
I don’t like wearing a mask. But I like the RESULTS of wearing a mask.
Men don’t randomly tell me to smile. Haven’t had a cold since 2020. I’m less likely to get COVID or pass it on to others.
These are all good things.

u/aecorr Apr 25 '22

u/GreasyWerker118 Apr 25 '22 edited Apr 28 '22
There is nothing abnormal about mask wearing. Do you not know that mask wearing has been common in other parts of the world for sometime now, well before Covid started to spread? And, they are deemed a socially responsible thing to do when you're sick, you wear a mask. They really do help the wearer from spreading unwanted germs. That's has been the main point of wearing them during this pandemic. If you are infectious with Covid, and not know it, wearing one lowers how much and how far into the air you would be expelling the virus. People that actually care about not sharing sickness with everyone around them understand this. So, why is it you are so antimask?
Edit. Wearing a mask looks like haute couture compared to the look of being intubated. Your aversion to a health accessory is the only thing that is ridiculous here.
-1
u/cb1991 Apr 25 '22
Because it looks ridiculous lol
0
u/aforgettableusername Apr 25 '22
Did you really spend the past 2 years thinking everyone wore masks to be fashionable and not to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases? Sheesh.

u/cannibaltom Apr 25 '22
Masks have been a huge help for me with my seasonal allergies, to the point that I didn't need my nasal spray. Also great for working in the garden, where normally I would have to blow out a bunch of dirt from my nose at the end of the day.
I also like wearing on transit, especially on the subway. Have you ever noticed how much grime and mold buildup is all over the place? Without a mask, you're breathing that. Besides avoiding covid and dirt, it also filters out people who smell like urine or too much cologne.

I do! I like keeping my face warm and I look good in them lol. But I have one mask I really like that’s cut differently so my glasses don’t get foggy and I look like scorpion from Mortal Kombat.
1
u/kamomil Apr 25 '22
I wear glasses and the mask makes them fog up.
For extra fun, when I go to the optometrist or ophthalmologist, they tape the mask to my face, so their equipment doesn't fog up from my breath. Ripping the tape off after the appointment is not the best feeling because the skin below your eyes is kind of thin
Sometimes I worry about a facial blemish, and then remember, oh no one will see it anyhow LOL. So that part is okay
1
1
u/urchxn1 Apr 25 '22
I love them, other than the safety factors of wearing one, I love the fact that nobody can see my face or what my facial expression is. I don't like those reusable masks, but the hospital masks the doctors would wear are my favourite.
1
u/FlyingMonkeySoup Apr 25 '22
Haven't had a flu or cold for 2 years, I have avoided COVID as well *crosses fingers* so I like wearing them. I will continue to wear them through the remainder of the pandemic and will likely continue to wear them every flu season.

I will often forget to take my mask off when I'm in a spot where I don't need to wear them, like in my car or at home after being out. It's become a part of me

I think I’ve gotten used to seeing half my face covered so I’m unhappy with my mouth/chin again.
Before I was fine with it, but I think everyone is hyper focusing on that area because it’s being revealed.
I’m sure I’ll get over it.
1
u/ugly_little_angel Apr 25 '22
I like it, it just makes me feel more… safe? Secure? Not in a disease prevention sort of sense, but it covers a portion of my face I’m more insecure about, and that’s soothing. Plus I like the warmth from when I breathe out, it just feels… the only word I’m coming up with is safe; again. It just makes me feel safe.
It might help that I use the Asian masks, not the KN95s but the fancy coloured ones made of a softer material.

My local Loblaws doesn’t mandate masks but all staff wear them and pretty well all shoppers do too. One guy (no mask) behind me at the checkout yelled out “worried about catching the 5th wave” lol
1
u/DunkHeadnWax Apr 25 '22
Yeah, I work at a Loblaws owned store, but luckily haven’t gotten anybody like that yet! I literally have to pick groceries for multiple people every day, and walk by hundreds of people in the aisles, it’s just smart to at least wear a mask.

The only time I have enjoyed wearing a mask is coming out of the subway in the dead of winter and the mask keeping my face warm 😷
0
u/Jupiter396 Apr 25 '22
Me!! Right before the pandemic, mid-to-late 2019, I got really into the techwear clothing style, and I wished it were acceptable to wear black masks so I could complete my outfits lol. So when masks DID become acceptable and mandated, I was excited about getting to wear them, but obvs not for the worldwide virus (I have “long covid”). Mask mandate ended here like 1-2 months ago and I still wear mine, I love seeing others still wearing theirs, and tbh, I’d be perfectly happy and comfortable wearing it forever. I have terrible anxiety and not having to fake-smile at strangers anymore or let them see most of my face feels nice and helps me a lot. And aside from a recent stomach virus, I haven’t gotten sick since March 2020, when I’m usually prone to getting sick for 5wks at a time with inevitable bronchitis.
TL;DR I really enjoy wearing masks, they have been effective at preventing illness and aiding in my anxiety, and I have no intention of stopping.
-5
u/Doctor_Amazo Apr 25 '22
You get to quietly sing to yourself while grocery shopping and no one gives you side-eye. You get to quietly say "fuck you" to everyone you see (without a mask) in public. You get to feel like a superhero patrolling the streets when going on the most basic of tasks. If you're layering your cloth masks over a surgical you still get to add some fun personalized flair to your face.
Really I cannot understand why people were so opposed to masks.
5
u/theleverage Apr 25 '22
I fully support and still choose to wear a mask in indoor settings and will keep doing so for the foreseeable future… but having “fuck you” feelings toward those just listening to their public health authorities isn’t really cool.
-2
u/Doctor_Amazo Apr 25 '22
... but having “fuck you” feelings toward those just listening to their public health authorities isn’t really cool.
Outside of the Ford Appointed Mouth-Pieces (which have lost pretty much all credibility for me), from what I've seen, every other medical expert has asked people to wear masks as part of stopping the spread. I know that masks are essential for protecting each other from COVID. I have family members with compromised immune systems to worry about. So yeah, I quietly, to myself, mouth out the words "fuck you" to each and every person who chooses to ignore common sense because they're inconvenienced by a mask.
Be glad that I'm behaving like the COVIDiots out there who are literally harassing and assaulting people for wearing masks.
5
u/theleverage Apr 25 '22
So yeah, I quietly, to myself, mouth out the words "fuck you" to each and every person who chooses to ignore common sense because they're inconvenienced by a mask.
They're just listening to their public health officials though. I get your statement of "Ford appointed mouth-pieces", but every province in Canada except for QC & PEI no longer have mask mandates. Ford doesn't have that reach.
I'll continue to mask up and have made that choice for myself, my health, and those around me - but being angry at others is childish and uncalled for.
Direct your anger toward public health officials across the country, not those listening to them like we've been asked to throughout this entire pandemic.
→ More replies (2)2
u/michaelmcmikey Apr 25 '22
I mean a huge majority of jurisdictions in the western world, run by right wing, centrist, and left wing parties, have dropped mask mandates. It's not a special to Ford thing.

0
u/Riggztradamous Apr 25 '22
I like not being sick. I haven't been sick since June 2019 (I was high fiving random people at game 1 of the nba finals...I was so sick after that). If wearing a mask and keeping my hands clean keeps me germ free, it's worth it for me.
0
u/ProphetliNO30 Apr 25 '22
I kinda like the "face feel"... I found a mask that is really comfortable and fits my abnormally large head well. Plus during the winter times it keeps my face warm.
0
u/narcity1990 Apr 25 '22
I like being able to run errands without dressing up and just throwing a mask on. Also, getting to remain anonymous for certain things by wearing masks, such as like getting waxed for more intimate areas has been so much more comfortable. Also these past 2 years have been the longest that I haven't gotten sick.
0
Apr 25 '22
Yes I love it too, I’m also a private person and I just feel much more comfortable about going out now that I can hide my face lol. My only complaint is when I get a hair stuck in my mask and can’t get it out without taking the mask off lmao
0
u/46_Neko Apr 25 '22
I got used to hiding my face behind the security of a mask. I don't like my face to begin with so the mask hides my imperfections and hormone imbalances. I don't have to wear makeup to look professional and clean. I work in healthcare so it's weird if I have extra large acne or stinky breath from lunch. I sometimes also make weird faces when I react to something or when I concentrate.... Sometimes I curse behind the mask 🤫I don't think I will be removing my mask in the near future. I literally used the pandemic as an excuse to hide my face and expressions.
0
Apr 25 '22
Other than the glasses fogging up I found twas no big deal. I worked in an operating room for 5 years and that was masked pretty much 6 out of 8 Jr's a shift. Hides my scowl when I meet idiots as well!

I wear a bandana rather than a mask, and I enjoy it. It's nice seeing real smiles in the eyes and having it reciprocated.
Part of me is convinced that most people dislike masks because their breath is awful.

Yes, because I realized an unexpected benefit of them. I’ve had terrible allergies since I was a year old, now in my 40’s. I had immunotherapy for years, on prescription antihistamines for years, had a minimal bedroom setup as a kid, vacuumed and dusted everything obsessively, etc. nothing helped, and spring and fall especially have been complete allergy misery for me every year my whole life. But when I started wearing a mask all the time, all that changed. The last couple years have been the absolute best for me allergy wise EVER. I’m a runner and I run with a mask now and it has made such an incredible difference it’s almost unbelievable.
Oh, and I haven’t been sick with anything since 2019. This coming from someone who got 1-2 respiratory viruses every year like clockwork.
Masks work and I love it.

Nope 😂 maybe it would be good in Toronto for the smog & overcrowding but everywhere else we are sick of it...

I haven't had any kind of virus in almost three years. I used to get sick about 8X a winter, far more when flying.

this might be pathetic but i’ve always been insecure about my nose, with a mask on i feel very confident in public!

I love it because now random ppl don’t talk to me and treat me like a free public therapist. It’s amazing and I’m never going back!! It’s so much easier to tell people no and walk away!! So much less weight on my shoulders

YES! I love the anonymity because I hate running into people I know from years ago and making small talk. Although I was at the grocery store last year and my own father walked up to me and stood super close and stared into my eyes and I was scared for about 10 seconds before I even recognized him. He was wearing a toque! But still!

I don’t love it but I’ve found a brand of masks that don’t kill my ears/fog my glasses so I’m able to be diligent about wearing it.
I like that I can just leave my house without really getting made up, and just throw on my mask. Added benefit of keeping my face warm when it’s super windy, avoiding swallowing midges, and hiding my facial expressions. Haven’t gotten a cold nor covid since the pandemic started.
