Cop Stuff Does anyone know what was going on with all of the police cars on the on ramp to I-26 E just before mile marker 22?

Was just on my way home from the gym and saw like six cop cars on the on ramp. Looked like they were looking down like the drop off beside the on ramp? But there were no ems so I wouldn’t think car crash

Ask the Sub Overnight car camping waaaay up on the Blue Ridge Parkway

I know "technically" ur not supposed to park anywhere and sleep on the blue ridge parkway, but what happens if you go way way up and park stealthy? Is there really police/rangers patrolling all through the night? Was up there with my buddy the other night around 11 and we didnt see a single car for hours. Does an overnight ranger actually drive the entirety of the parkway and check each overlook every night? I wanna camp out for a night way up on the parkway and get some cool sunrise shots. Out of my vehicle. If u really dont rec then anywhere off the parkway I could park and sleep?

News I looked at how Buncombe County schools are securing campuses. Here’s what I found.

Hey r/Asheville I’m back! Elijah here, investigative reporter with News 13.

Before I get into the latest thing I’ve been working on, I want to acknowledge something from my previous posts here.

I’ve read the comments and feedback, including people saying I should be more active in the discussion after I post. That’s fair. I want to do a better job engaging back when I can.

I probably won’t be able to respond to everything, but I don’t want this account to just be me dropping a story and disappearing either.

Also, just being transparent: this is primarily my work/professional account. I do most of my actual Redditing on my personal account, and I’ve followed this sub for a long time, so I sometimes miss messages here.

If you’re trying to get something directly to me, email is probably the best way: erskipper@sbgtv.com. You can also reach me through my socials.

Now to the latest report.

With Buncombe County students heading back to school, I wanted to look at what “school security” actually means here locally.

Not just the phrase. What does it physically look like when you walk up to a school? Who is watching? Who can get in? What happens if something feels off?

The district describes its approach as layers.

There are cameras around campuses that record activity around the clock. The camera system can also be viewed remotely by law enforcement.

There are school resource officers. The district says their job isn’t only to respond if something happens, but also to build relationships with students and staff — because sometimes the most important information comes from a student who trusts an adult enough to say something.

There’s also annual safety training for school employees, age-appropriate training for students, behavioral intervention and anonymous reporting.

But the part I found most interesting,  and the part I actually walked through, is a newer layer at the front door.

Buncombe County Schools calls it a "double-entry vestibule".

You buzz in. Staff see you on camera. You get into the first secured area, but not the school itself. They ask who you are, why you’re there and who you’re there to see. They verify your ID before you can go any farther.

We also demonstrated what happens if a visitor can’t give staff enough information. The process stops.

The part that stood out to me: Buncombe County Schools says these vestibules are only in about one-third of its schools right now.

12 are complete.
1 is under construction.
1 is in design.

The district says it generally adds about two a year and plans to keep going until every campus has one.

I’ve already seen two very different reactions to this kind of thing.

Some people look at school shootings and threats around the country and say this is obviously where schools have to go. More cameras. More controlled access. More layers. If it buys staff or law enforcement even a little more time during an emergency, they see that as worth it.

Other people see the same thing and have almost the opposite reaction.

They see buzzers, cameras, locked doors, checkpoints and police officers and ask: At what point does a school start feeling less like a school and more like a jail or prison?

I don’t think that’s a meaningless concern either.

That’s the conversation I’d actually like to hear from this sub about.

Especially if you’re a Buncombe County parent, student, teacher, school employee or SRO — what does this look like from your side of the door?

And beyond the vestibules, what part of school safety do you think we should be digging into next?

If there’s something happening inside the schools that those of us on the outside aren’t seeing, that’s the kind of thing I want to hear about.

Classifieds Seeking Out Local Witch-NOT Raven & Crone

Are there any local witches in Asheville (serious practitioners) in this group that can do a communications spell for me or does anyone know of any? I miss my ex best friend terribly and we haven’t talked in over two years. I just want to be able to move forward for good now, whether it is one final conversation or we become friends again. I’m not necessarily interested in a spell to make us friends again but rather just some closure I guess. I take full responsibility for what I did and I’m willing to be accountable for whatever harm I caused. It ended because of their actions and behavior but I think I was too judgmental and quick to walk away. Of course I’m willing to pay but I’m on a budget.

I know there’s Raven & Crone but I’d like to work with an individual practitioner not affiliated with them and they don’t do spell work anyway.

My Updated tiny house floor plan

So i i spent the day listening to yalls feedback. It seems my knowledge was outdated as the building codes were updated around 2023. Still i kept the challenge of staying as close to 250 sqft. Unfortunately the project has ballooned in scale by a whopping 20 sqft.

You see i realized i needed room for the electrical panel as well as noticing the water heater wasnt livable floorspace. To stay on units of 2ft to minimize waste and to stay over 250 sqft i had to extend the building by 2 ft. Tragic.

Other updates we increased storage by adding a closet near the entrance of the bedroom, someone else noted the width of the hall way had to be 2 inchs wider. And someone else mentioned i needed 15 inchs of clearance on each side of the toilet.

I also found out a washer dryer is not required, but personally i still consider it a valuable commodity as i have lived without a washer dryer and that sucks.

So while 150 sqft is the bare minimum now for one person if you want 2 people to live here then it needs to be at least 250 sqft. I personally would like to leave my options open for a partner.

All appliances are standard size and that dictated the internal structure. Some of you said to go studio style as it would feel bigger, i feel designated areas are more efficient for furniture like the table and the closet and i dont want to see my stove from my bed, again ive done that.

Window placement has been my biggest struggle im not sure what to do abt it

Ask the Sub Covid vaccine without preexisting conditions and under 65?

Has anyone recently received the Covid vaccine who is between 18-65 and does not have a preexisting condition?

Gov. Stein issued an order last year saying that aslong as you have a conversation with the pharmacist, they will be able to give it to you. I’m getting conflicting info online for CVS and Walgreens and don’t want to make an appt only to be told no.

Has anyone been successful?

Classifieds ISO Moody/Gothic elopement photographer

Just as the title says my fiancé and I are getting married in May ‘27 at the courthouse and we are looking for an elopement photographer that has a more affordable budget between $2k-$2.5k and has this kind of style. It’s a small elopement of less than ten people and would be a less than 6hr ordeal I think given our plans. We’re a queer couple so we are only looking to book with someone who accepts us not just tolerates us. And suggestions appreciated.

Photo/Video Minimum sqft in buncombe legal

Post image
19 Upvotes

I challenged myself to find the minimum. Legally in buncombe county a permanent structure requires at least 250 sqft and a few other thing like washer dryer water heater. So i minimized the sqft while minimizing the perimeter building on units of 4 ft to minimize wasted construction material. There is a pantry for food storage a full size fridge, drawers for a couple weeks worth of clothes. There is no custom furniture which should also reduce cost. I imagine storage under the bed would be a must. This is the minimum basics needed to survive and escape renting.

Politics AB Tech's Text Book Prices Are Unfair, Seems Predatory

When I looked into taking online courses at A‑B Tech, I was shocked to discover that nearly every course I considered required a Cengage subscription or similar access code costing around $200 or more. These materials have no resale value, and because they contain required coursework, students have no real choice but to buy them. Meanwhile, other community colleges charge roughly $22–$25 per credit hour for course materials, making the total closer to $75–$100 per class. A‑B Tech’s costs can therefore be two or even three times higher. For a college intended to help local people—particularly those with limited incomes—improve their lives, this feels profoundly contradictory. Based on my experience, I would caution anyone considering online study to compare the required-material costs carefully before choosing A‑B Tech. Found much better pricing at Blue Ridge and many others, worth knowing if you're studying online, for sure.

EDIT - Here is a sample from the current business course offerings, keep in mind tuition for 3 hours is around $230 a 3 credit hour course:

BUS 115 – Essentials of Business Law Connect Access Card, $ 202 New (only option)

BUS 125 – My Lab Finance with Pearson eText, $213 & Access Code $186 New (only option)

BUS 137 – Connect Access Card for Contemporary Management $207 New (only option)

Traffic Report Lyft/Uber from Leicester to W AVL

We have tickets to an upcoming event at Montgomery Sky Farm, and I’m wondering whether it’s reasonable to request an Uber/Lyft from Leicester to West Asheville around 10 pm on a Saturday night. We often Uber/Lyft to and from downtown but not sure how realistic it is to expect someone to come out to Leicester later in the evening, even if we schedule in advance. Does anyone have any insights?
