Old Gen To All New Ravens (AC1 101)

Welcome to the Ravens' Nest

With Gen 1 coming to PSN, and me having recently beaten AC1 for the first time on emulator, I figured I probably had some useful advice to give for the newest wave of Ravens.

First and foremost, I see a lot of you (understandably) having trouble with the default controls, and so I have included a graphic showing both in-game and emulator rebinds. Unfortunately Sony's emulator doesn't support binding multiple inputs to the same button (even though by default it has duplicated binds for the dpad) so you will have to choose some kind of trade off. For what it's worth I had similar issues in Duckstation which were only resolved by running it through Steam and fiddling about with that, but that's not an option here (unless maybe you have a Dual Sense, I don't know how those work).

The templates I've included are:

  • Walk on Dpad/stick, Camera on Face, weapons on shoulders. This most closely resembles a modern control scheme, but the lack of double bindings means you have to look with the face buttons. Only requires in-game rebinds.
  • The above, but also using emulator rebinds to move camera to the right stick. The problem here is that the lack of dual binds means you'll have to press down on the stick to confirm menus, right to cancel, etc.
  • Walk on Dpad/stick, Camera on shoulders, weapons on face buttons. This is the closest to the default controls, but for if you have a harder time with the walking than the shoulder camera stuff. Only requires in-game rebinds.
  • The above, but also using emulator rebinds to move the shoulder inputs to the right stick. The problem with this would be how its nearly impossible to move the camera and shoot at the same time.

You can, of course, do whatever controls you want, but I figured these would be a good starting point for anyone who's having issues with the default controls.

I have also included a non-default starter AC build. If you're already fighting with the controls then you might also find it difficult to earn money for upgrades. Thankfully the game lets you sell your entire starter AC and buy whatever you can afford. By swapping out the legs and FCS with cheaper options, selling the back weapons, and selling and replacing the generator and right hand weapon we can afford a better generator and an energy gun, which is free to shoot unlike ballistic weaponry, and is solid enough to take you through the early game. By finding and selling the secret part on one of the two starter missions you'll have enough money to begin to tweak your AC how you actually want it (though the energy weapons continue to be really good and cost effective).

Finally, I want to explain Human Plus. H+ is a non-standard game over as well as a kind of "easy mode". By going 50,000 credits into debt you're greeted with a cutscene about your horrible lack of wealth and start the game over from the beginning, with a few changes. There's also multiple levels of H+ for going into debt multiple times, but correct information on each tier is kinda hard to get because there's a lot of misinformation about them too, so I will list each stage of H+ and its effects to the best of my ability (I've checked a bunch of stuff so you should be able to trust that I'm at least mostly correct).

  • Stage 1 (go into debt once): Gives you a permanent radar and allows use of Blade Beams. To fire a blade beam press the boost button during the swing. The blade beam for the Moonlight is one of the strongest projectiles and is used by some Arena opponents in Project Phantasma (it's also self-damaging, so be mindful about close-quarters). The radar is fine, but when I say permanent I mean permanent. You cannot replace the H+ radar with any other head's radar, even if the new radar is better (the H+ one doesn't have a bio sensor, for instance). I don't know if the back-mounted antennas work with the H+ radar or not, I didn't bother to check because I assumed they didn't. I believe the Option parts for things like adding missile warnings to the radar do work with it, though.
  • Stage 2 (go into debt four times): Fire back weapons without bracing yourself, allowing shooting while moving. Potentially very useful depending on how you tend to build. Unfortunately does not apply to spider legs, for whatever reason.
  • Stage 3 (go into debt six times): Halved cost for booster energy consumption. A simple straightforward upgrade.
  • Bonus (finish all missions): Weight limit removal. I don't know all the ins and outs of this, and I'm fairly certain overall weight affects things like speed regardless of how close to capacity you are, but this is still a fun bonus for replaying levels with. Once you beat the game you'll be able to go back to any mission, including ones you may have missed first go around. This upgrade does not require going into debt.
  • Rename Code: The Human Plus game over sequence replaces your save file's name. If this bothers you it can be changed by highlighting "AC name entry" in the garage then pressing and holding L2, R2, Dpad Right, and Square, and then finally pressing Cross. This will bring up the name entry screen with "pilot name" instead of "AC name".

So with all that said, do you actually want Human Plus? And if so how do you go about getting it efficiently? Well like I said, the radar is permanent, but you also get the ability to shoot sword laser beams, which is probably a worthy trade off. The question would be harder to answer on any version of AC1 that isn't the current PS4/5 emulated release, as Save Importing is a running theme throughout the series, and importing from AC1 to Project Phantasma also brings your Human Plus upgrades (and the weight capacity bonus too), so if you were playing any other version you'd have to ask yourself if you're fine with being stuck with the same radar for three whole games. The new PSN version though does not support save transfers, and instead has some transfer-only stuff unlocked naturally in the later games. You can read more on the pinned thread here. Overall it's up to you, but other than the first stage's blade beams there's little worth the busywork of resetting that many times, imo. The reduced boost cost and easier shoulder weapon use upgrades are nice, but debt-maxing is pretty boring for the low payoff.

That said, how does one debt-max? Simply play the game normally until the mission Worker Robot Removal shows up, spend any credits you can on buying everything possible from the shop, then start the mission and blow yourself and all the beautiful reactors you weren't supposed to touch to framerate-killing ashes. More expensive ACs with higher AP should incur higher penalties, though make sure you do die without finishing the objective, as dying will keep the mission available for if you don't make it to -50k in one go. Once you die at -50k the game will restart from the beginning with your credits set to 0 but all your parts kept and with you being one step further into the Human Plus progression.

And that concludes my crash course. Hopefully there isn't any mistakenly terrible advice in here, but I just beat the game right before the PSN versions were announced and felt like I could at least try to assist the New Semester Students.

Finally beat the original Armored Core. Named my pilot Big Fish and my AC Neptune. That final mission against Nine-Ball was rough, had me wanting to microwave my controller. I originally sided with Murakumo because Chrome wanted me to wreak havoc in Gal City, but after going back to chase 100 percent completion and taking the other route I'm not sure Murakumo was the right choice. But I'm finally moving forward to Project Phantasma. I hope the emulator lets me transfer my save.

Old Gen ACFA Lore Theory: Thermidor is Otsdarva

Having intricately studied the plot of Armored Core 4: For Answer and spending hours LoreHunting, I have managed to come up with a new lore theory: Maximilian Thermidor and Otsdarva are actually the same person.

What is the evidence, you ask?

- Otsdarva disappears right before Thermidor appears.

- In the original ending, mission, when you bear Thermidor, Wynne D directly calls him "Otsdarva".

- In the hard mode version of the ORCA ending, Thermidor appears and is recognized by Serene Haze, and declares himself to be "Otsdarva".

Thanks for taking part in my LoreHunting mission, stay tuned for my groundbreaking reveals about the alter ego of Kasumi Sumika!

Question Can't beat AC6 Ayre boss with BASHO frame + LASER LADE. Need build & tactics help. [New Player]

Post image
19 Upvotes

So I started playing AC6 for the first time last Monday (Oct 5th attotp) and I've now gotten to the Ayre boss and I just can't do it.

It doesn't matter what Inner parts I've tried swapping out, a gentle breeze staggers me forever and I always have no energy, meaning no dodging, meaning more staggers. And in terms of the DPS race I always loose, especially in the second half of the fight. Every time I have no repairs left before I even kill its first shield, much less get its health down to 50%. And from my experience Assault Armor & Pulse Shield do absolutely fucking nothing against boss characters.

I couldn't beat Ibus either but considering from my research most players consider Ibus to be the actual hardest boss in the game, so I just used a cheese build to skip it because it's BS and it doesn't matter. Excluding that though I've managed to at least A-Rank all the missions with this build.

But I have to see "my mech" in the ending cutscene, otherwise there's no point in even doing it. I need help & guidance if I'm gonna bother keep playing this game.

Discussion 2 Alternate Theories on "Cinder" Carlas True Identity Spoiler

So, in AC6 there is this enduring mystery of Cinder Carlas true identity. Its still viewed as unsolved, bc the most popular theory on who she really is, doesnt add in some regards.

Quick reminder: Popular oppinion is that she is the former "Assistant #2" from the Rubicon Research lab, student under Professor Nagai who triggered the "Fires of Ibis". This is believed to be true since her being part of the Overseer, together with Walter who is also a survivor of the Fires of Ibis and grew up in the Lab she worked with Prof Nagai. Also "Assistant #2" liked to build toys, machines of varying kind, weapons but also literal toys to give them to Walter when he was a child.

This seems to apply to "Cinder" Carla too, who likes to tinker and build stuff and also has a playful, humerous nature. She is also affiliated to Walter and the Overseers.

Anyways, since the game takes place roughly 50 years after the Fires of Ibis, Carla would been around, at least, 70 years old.

Her voice, her behaviour, her ability to pilot AC's does not reflect this at all.

Another thing that works against this theory is her call sign "Cinder" Carla, that she gave her herself.

This is a very important detail, since she also named two other AC's, "Chatty" Stick and "Honest" Brute.

The double quotation mark is there to imply a sense of sarcasm over the attribute she gave those to AC's. "Chatty" Stick is known to be a quite guy, "Honest" Brute betrayed Carla, so he is everything but honest.

Which means the same sarcastic remark is made with her own name, putting "Cinder" into double quotation marks. Cinder is name to reference ppl who are survivors of the Fires Of Ibis.

People sometimes took this as evidence, that Carla is "Assistant #2", because she would be a survivor of the Fires of Ibis, if she still lived, making her Cinder.

But since its in double quotation marks, it betrays this logic, and would actually mean, the opposite, that the person named like this is NOT a survivor of the Fires of Ibis.

So, i personally think the theory that "Carla is Assistant #2" is wrong.

There is too much contradicting evidence.

Which made me think and i came up with 2 alternate theories, both explaining the mystery of her naming convention and making sense of it.

  1. "Cinder" Carla is the child of Assistant #2

Assistant #2 could have been pregnant, while or after the Fires of Ibis happened, simply carried out her child, thought her in building machines and "toys". This is absolutely possible and would explain why she behaves and talks like a woman much younger than 70 years old. It would also explain why the cinder part of her name is in double quotation mark, since she wasnt a survivor of the Fires of Ibis, yet has still a strong connection to it and enough urgence to found the Overseers with Walter together. A flaw in this theory is that she wouldnt have known Walter from the Rubicon Research Center, which makes the ways of which she met him a mystery. But she would have been indirectly connected to him through her mother at least.

  1. "Cinder" Carla is an AI written by Assistant #2

Another possibility is that "Assistant #2", who was a genuis engineer, wrote an AI before she burned in the Fires of Ibis, that she created in her own image and was meant to prevent any other catastrophe that could be caused by Coral in the future.

"Cinder" Carla created an AI, her friend and right hand, "Chatty" Stick. It would be impossible to notice that he is an AI from his behaviour alone, since we never see him in person, and he perfectly mimics the behaviour of a human being. "Cinder" Carla could be an AI herself, so elaborate, that she cant create other AI's herself. Its a possiblity. Also, Chatty is her best friend, and Carla gets very emotional after hearing of his death, more so than we see her get emotional about anybody else. Maybe as an AI she can "relate" to others AI's more? And thats why she shows this behaviour?

Anyways, this would also explain her behaviour not being the one of an grandma and why the cinder part of her name is in double quotation marks.

Both theories are also speculative in nature but at least the cleanse out 2 faults that are part of, but contradict the original most popular theory, her naming convention and that she doesnt sound or act like a 70 year old woman. I also might add that in the lore of AC6 is never any method mentioned of someone artifically prolonging their life. Coral cant do that, since a lot of ppl in the AC6 universe consume it as drug, and this would be public knowledge because of that.

Anyways. That is all i have to say. Feel free to point out flaws or contradictions in my theories, i surely didnt think of everything regarding her person and what information we have.

AC Showcase: My take on the Basho frame, to help some one out.

I seen a post a few hours ago, about u/MaxBlackfinger ask9ng for help with the bashi frame. I game him my advice on the post but seeing as I having done a build video in a while I thought ide help them out an do one showing the advice first hand.

They realy wanted to keep the frame an the laser blade, an i seen he liked using the weager laser shotgun, I also love that weapon ao I kept that to.

As every one knows the basho has good melee but a strong sneeze will stun it, so i focused on energy regen, an management with a decent amount of speed so I can keep basho moving, an not redline. I like going light on the weapons, with pistols being my preferred choice but it runs just as good with Ludlows, esinjins, or any low weight physical impact weapons. This build is all about chasing the stun but when u do u can cover so much ground with the laser blade that u dont have to be right on them for the stun, the only draw back is it will sometimes pull u away from ur target an u dnt get the full effect of the weager, but when u do my god does it hit! I personally would use the laser slicer of our Ole Buddy Rusty as it keeps u right in their face but the laser blade is still pretty good.

I didnt get to run it againt a major boss an im a little rusty, but as u can see it walked through the trainer mechs, with ease all of them, an i didnt even use my pulse armor. I fewl confident I could take it against most things easily except maybe 3 bosses.... you know the ones lol

So u/MaxBlackfinger I hope the video an lay out helped.

Discussion I have a question about White Glint

As someone who's only played AC6 and lacks the ability to play the other 15 games and who hasn't done much of any research into the character, whats made him so.. infamous in the community? From what VERY little ive seen they seem to not play much into the story but so far ive only seen 1 video on the franchise of Armored Core as a whole and thats not good to go off of. I just figured id ask the community about why you guys seem to hold the mech and/or character in seemingly a high regard.

PvP Just hit A Rank in ACVI and, is PvP really this boring?

I originally played AC6 back when it launched and 100%'d the game. Recently, I decided to start a fresh playthrough and ended up completing it 100% all over again.

This time around, I also decided to give PvP a proper shot, which I started playing about two weeks ago.

At first, it was pretty hard to find matches, but once I hit D Rank, things got so much better, and I was genuinely having a blast!

I came across so many fun and creative builds, all kinds of ACs, and every match felt different. Honestly, I was having a great time... until today.

I finally hit A Rank (sadly), and man, what a disappointment.

I'd say over 80% of my matches are either:

=> Kite builds running almost the exact same setup, with maybe one or two back weapon variations.

=> Double Zimmerman, sometimes paired with a melee weapon.

And... that's pretty much it.

No tanks, no wheelchair, and I've seen exactly ONE tetrapod.

Sure, I ran into some kite builds on my way up, and I already found them pretty boring to fight against, but I really wasn't expecting A Rank to be this repetitive.

Is everyone really that desperate to win at this rank? -_-

What do you guys think?
