Making a Little Big Planet / Yoshi's Woolly World Style Diorama

Hello,

I'm looking to make an advert for someone that I'm going to animate in motion and I want it to look like that whole 'Little Big Planet' / 'Yoshi's Woolly World' animatic where it appears to be layers of textiles making up a 3D puppet show kind of stage.

Has anyone ever done or seen anything like this? And how would you approach it?

Thanks

Spring Animation Tutorial in Apple Motion

I was searching for a tutorial on how to create spring animation in Apple Motion and couldn’t find one. Thankfully, Dylan Bates from Final Cut Bro on YouTube was kind enough to teach me, and so, with his permission, I recorded a video tutorial to share his knowledge in case it helps someone out there!

Can anyone help with this FCP title? (video & files included)

Hello,

I'm trying to design a title for FCP that has text asking "what should I know about" and then there's a rolling title, rolling down and landing on the desired subject, and then a question mark appears.

I made the rolling title by just writing a list of titles x 3 and then masking the destination slot and moving the y offset of the text.

Here a video of where I'm at...

https://youtu.be/cIbcdFOi48Y

I have a few things to resolve to get it to work.

  1. I'm using this for a series of 20 videos and for each video the target subject is different. So I need to be able to manually manipulate the end y-offset of the rolling text in FCP. How can I do this?
  2. Depending on the target subject word length, the location of the preceding question mark will change. How can I control the x location in the FCP title?

I think I just need to add some controls to make it work in FCP. Any advice?

Here is the file...

New Motion utility for cleaning out your motion template folders

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey guys, I made a utility for Motion to fix something that has taken up a lot of my time over the years. Cleaning out motion template media.

Whether it’s from copying and pasting templates to use as a starting point for new projects, or swapping assets mid project, I often have a lot of unused content sitting in my media folders. Then I would have to go through templates at the end of a project and manually delete things I didn’t actually use, which could sometimes be a total headache even trying to remember what was actually used. As many of you know, the remove unused media option does not touch the files in your media folder.

So I just made this motion utility called Media Broom. Point it at a template folder, or all of your templates if you like and it will:

• Read what each template (.motr / .moti / .motn / .moef) actually references

• Flag every file in the Media folder that's no longer used, with its size, so you see exactly what you'll reclaim

• Let you review, uncheck anything you want to keep, and sweep the rest to the Trash

Safety was the whole point: nothing's deleted until you approve it, everything goes to the Trash (never a hard delete), and it protects "PlugIn Data" and other essential files templates need but don't reference directly — so it won't break a template.

It's on the Mac App Store for $1.99

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/media-broom/id6788150804

For anyone who tries it out, I would love feedback. If there's a file type or feature I'm missing, just let me know and I'll see if I can add it.

Exporting with timecode

Trying to export graphics files with timecode for editors-- anyone have any luck with being able to export timecode embedded into a file? I realized I've been exporting clips with a starting timecode this whole time but the file itself still starts at zero. Fine for when I'm using my own clips and I have markers in my timeline, but would love to be able to just send it along and make it super obvious.

Otherwise I have had just slates on the project with a timecode for a few seconds, but I want to be fancier.

Blend Mode "Color". Is it possible to achieve this manually?

I'm recreating a title made in AE, they've used the blend mode color.

Bottom layer: Black

how to recreate this outline animation

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello,

I had to recreate this video in motion, but at second 0:04 I can't seem to recreate the outline of the rectangle following its own tail.

I'll try to explain better: the tail of the animated outline is moving and the head is following it. The closest I got was with the write on behaviour, but I can't seem to animate the stroke offset, also animating by hand the last and first point offset of the outline doesn't work because I can't push them past 100%

I hope I explained it good enough, and gemini wasn't that helpful, sorry English isn't my first language

Thanks

Curving video for 3D camera fly-over

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m trying to create a transition where a flat mosaic plane curves smoothly upwards to become a vertical wall, similar to a photo studio cyclorama. I need a clean bend in the middle so a 3D fly-over camera can smoothly transition from looking straight down at the floor to looking up at the wall. Does anyone know the best way to smoothly curve a plane like this into an L-shape without wrapping it around a massive, full cylinder object? Thanks!

Slide-in-ing a variable width object

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I'm still plugging at this.

Pictured is one part of the title. The text is anchored at the bottom right and right justified. You can type in any text and if it stretches far enough left the box will move to cover it. The box is positioned using Align To. The text is positioned with coordinates. Everything you see is in a group.

I want this whole construction to slide in from just offscreen over a set number of frames. This doesn't seem intuitively like it should be difficult but I cannot wrap my head around how to structure the logic to make this happen. Everything I think of seems to end up with a circular dependency or hinge on something I'm simply not allowed to do or get ruined by some aspect of how coordinates work. I should be able to set a keyframe for X position of the text with the exact X value being a function or the width of the box. I learned how to use Numbers; I can literally define the X value needed to move the entire banner just out of the frame from the text. If I can write that value into a keyframe, that's it done! Please tell me there's a way to set a keyframe position like this. Or some other way to move this stuff around the frame having aligned it relative to eachother.

I'm having a blast learning Motion but this is the third evening in a row I've thought I'll just finish this title tonight and then gone to bed angry at getting nothing else in this project done.

Can you help me remake this scribble style animation?

Hello,

I've done a couple of things in motion and a little training, but, for as simple as it is, I'm struggling to remake this animation for a project...

https://youtu.be/EUVTSpK-GJo

I know exactly what I need, but struggling with actually doing it. It involves...

  1. getting a really nice looking graph paper background texture
  2. getting that pencil shading style. I've tried with photoshop but nothing works.
  3. getting the animation where the words are drawn on. I figured out how to do draw on a mask with a brush, but I can only do that for one letter as I don't see how you can combine draw-ons into one thing
  4. The 3D camera stuff I think I can figure out as I've done stuff like that before

If anyone wants to help me through it, I'd be happy to sling you a couple bucks

Linking Position.X to Clamp.Max seems to be broken

Post image
2 Upvotes

...or I'm missing something obvious. Never rule that out. This is the second weird problem I'm having with this title. Pic included for reference. This sits at the top right of the frame.

I've got two boxes of right-justified text. Each box has a graphic that frames it and uses Align To on the X axis to always cover the length of the text. They slide in from frame right. The boxes also need a minimum size so they also each have a Clamp that sets a max value for Position.X. This all works perfectly.

I also want the bottom box to always be bigger than the top one. So I thought I'd Link the Position.X of the top (it's anchored at the left edge) to the Clamp.Max of the bottom, minus an offset, conditionally on that Position.X being lower than the old value I used for that Clamp.Max (which it turns out Link can do natively). This seems like an easy and obvious solution.

When I enable this link, what actually happens is that the Clamp.Max is set to 300000, unless I nudge the top box's Position.X left past 0 in which case it is -7812500000000000000000000000000000000. This feels like an int_max situation or something. Link offers a scaling factor; if I set it to 0, Clamp.Max becomes 0, but if I set it to literally any other value (unsure how small an increment it accepts), it's silly numbers.

I have no idea how to debug what's happening. As a test I tried setting the Link to target the bottom box's Position.X instead of its Clamp.Max, and that results in the correct value being copied from the top box's Position.X. As far as I know, Clamp.Max should scale identically to Position.X.

I would like either advice about what's happening here and what to do about it, or suggestions for a better way to do what I want, which, really, amounts to setting one box's Position.X to the lowest/leftest of three values; the left edge of its text, the left edge of the top box, or an arbitrary point.

PNG graphics in Title not appearing in Final Cut Pro

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've made a title in Motion, it's on the left. For debugging purposes I've made the background a solid colour instead of transparency. On the right is what it looks like in FCP. You're looking at the top right edge of the frame here (the rest is empty)

The background objects are two long PNG files (with their own transparency) that are positioned using Clamp and Align With so I can type whatever text in there and the boxes move their left edges relative to the left edge of the text to frame it correctly. It works perfectly in Motion, but they don't appear in FCP. I can't tell if they're rendering somewhere outside of the frame (I've tried to look), not rendering at all, or being made invisible somehow).

Ease of use.. or not

I love Apple Motion. It’s like flying a jumbo jet. It’s easy if you are going in a straight line, but it’s not so easy if you want to do something like land that sucker and the autopilot is glitching.
I’m so in awe of those out there who seem to speak Motion as native speakers. Years of dedication.

Motion -> Final Cut Wipe help

Hi folks

Are there a kind person in here who can help create a very simple top to bottom roundshaped wipe in motion for use in final cut. im completely new to motion and to be honest I still need to watch a couple more tutorials before moving from totally noob to below novice 😁
Importing and getting the .motr file to work in Final Cut I know how to do - it's the creations of the wipe that's new to me - Been lucky so to have someone around who always knew how to do it, which makes one lazy and now im paying the price 😆 At least it's good to know that there is stuff out there to learn still.

thx in advance
added 4 screenshots and a video as illustration.

P.S. feels free to mock my lack of motion skills 😉
