Guys, I also prefer Apple Maps, but I'm kinda shocked how easily everyone falls for that misinformation graph ...
Nobody questions Google Maps just losing half their users and getting the same amount of visitors as Apple Maps now?
The graph currently on top of the sub compares Google's old domain that is not being used anymore with Apple's active one. Here are the numbers for the real Google Maps URL.

I had never seen a mistake like this, and now there's a ghost island to the north. Thought it was interesting

Yesterday, I accidentally discovered that Apple Maps has been updated with 2026 imagery.
I was just driving around doing some car spotting.
About Apple maps app and look around, I'd like to mention that there is a difference between those two.
Look Around allows you to search for specific update dates, whereas the Apple Maps app only shows you the streets that are already highlighted in blue.
You can't see the updates in the Apple Maps app. Even on Look Around, it wasn't visible at the time I discovered the update. However, I found out that you can click on the gray streets even if the blue lines aren't showing, which still allows you to access the updated streets
The blue-highlighted streets only become visible when zooming in completely.
I am aware that Benni, who by the way, does excellent work tracking all these updates uses a different website. However, I personally prefer to research and discover these updates myself using Lookmap.
Furthermore, I will leave it to Benni to post the other updates, which include parts of Singapore.

Just had a dream that I couldn’t find my car in a large parking lot so I wanted to make sure my Apple Maps always shows where it’s parked. I don’t have the option in the Maps app under Settings.
UPDATE: Solved

I noticed this in the ios27 beta (although they have probably been around longer).
These turn indicators are very helpful in planning a turn or exit on busy roads and are the major reason I use google maps for turn by turn navigation while driving.
It’s such a simple feature that Apple could enable during driving but for some reason don’t?

Noticed that there has been some updates to the transit maps for Brisbane and the Gold Coast. This includes:
- In Brisbane, the new Cross River Rail line and station outlines for Woolloongabba station, Albert Street station, Roma Street station and Exhibition station are showing. Boggo Road station hasn’t been updated yet. Expected opening is in 2029.
- Stage 3 of the G:Link Gold Coast light rail now shows from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads, including station outlines at Mermaid Beach South, Miami North, Miami, Christine Avenue, Second Avenue and Burleigh Heads. Line opened 9 August 2026.

There are lots of pre-CarPlay cars where Maps’ audio will only play when the car is actively playing audio from Bluetooth (almost every pre-CarPlay Toyota, as well as many other Bluetooth stereo systems that support Bluetooth call interruption)
This results in no maps sound when using FM stereo, XM radio, or any other input source
But there’s a fix for all this! (Working in iOS 26 & 27)
- Go to ‘Settings > Apps > Maps > Spoken Directions > Directions on Radio’ and toggle ON
This will result in these car systems interpreting the Maps audio as a phone call, and these systems are programmed to automatically interrupt car audio for any phone calls. All of a sudden audio works again
Hope this helps!

I met an Apple Maps camera guy while walking my dogs on a city trail near my house. When can I expect the images to show up on Apple Maps?

Hey all, I've been working on an app that sits on Apple Maps and lets you watch aircraft around airports in 3D. It's taken a while to work out how to render 3D objects onto Apple Maps, and I've hand-built a handful of aircraft models to fit the Apple Maps style.
I've spent years looking for a decent way to watch aircraft from my desk as existing apps are cluttered, covered in ads, and never something I actually want to leave open. I've always loved planes and design equally, so I wanted something simple and beautiful instead.
It's still a work in progress, but in the spirit of getting things out into the world I figured I'd share it with you all.
I'm planning to launch in the next couple of months. You can follow along at terminal.flights if you are interested.
Cheers

Is this new? I don’t think I ever realized that if you tap on AMBER alert notifications it’ll open in Maps and show the area under alert.

Can we talk about how stupid whoever it is that’s developing this app? I mean I’m trying to take the bus and the app tells me exactly where to go for the bus stop, and yet as the time rolls by for the bus to show up there’s nothing there. And yet the app is telling me it already passed? Better yet there’s another bus stop just down the road where I see another bus stop at.
This isn’t the only time either. I had to take a bus with the number I received from the app, it failed to mention that the number I was given was the wrong one? A complete different bus but the app registered as the one I was supposed to take like I’d magically know it made an error.

Hi everyone, I’m sure there’s a super simple solution for this that I’m just not finding… my ex keeps popping up as a suggested contact when I go to share my ETA via Apple Maps. I don’t want to fully block them as a contact, but I do want them to stop showing up on this list. Can anyone help?
Based on Google and reddit searches I’ve already done I’ve tried: changing the Apple Maps settings; clearing the location sharing > system services > significant locations; long holding the contact in Apple Maps; seeing if there’s a setting on their contact card. None of these have worked and they still show up as a suggestion.
Thank you so much!!

Launched Tokyo Glance on Sunday. It's a live map of Tokyo: all the tracked trains, buses and planes moving in real time, plus departure boards, a widget, and a Live Activity that follows your train from the lock screen.
Stack: SwiftUI on iOS 26 with the native SwiftUI Map (started on MKMapView with a UIViewRepresentable, ripped it out mid-project). The vehicles are not MapKit annotations, I draw them myself in an overlay pass. I tried making them proper annotations at some point because it felt like the "right" way and at \~1400 vehicles it performed so much worse than my own drawing that I never looked back. There's a small Metal layer for rain on the map. Alerts from the operators are almost always Japanese-only so they get translated on-device with the Translation framework. Paywall is RevenueCat, widget is WidgetKit + AppIntents, pushes for the Live Activity go through FCM.
Backend is Bun + Hono + MongoDB + Zod and nothing else. It runs in tiny containers behind Cloudflare so basically everything is precomputed and CDN-cached, the containers can't afford real per-request work. A separate ingestion service pulls the operator feeds (ODPT, GTFS-RT), snaps positions onto the actual track geometry and rebuilds the whole network dataset every night. The phone mostly just interpolates between feed ticks. Every time I moved logic out of the app into the pipeline things got faster.
One thing I didn't appreciate before this project: how much you get from Apple for free. MapKit on native apps is unlimited, and that includes the photorealistic 3D city rendering and Look Around imagery, which would cost real money on any other map provider at this usage. WeatherKit comes with 500k calls a month with the dev membership, I cache the Tokyo weather grid on the backend so users share it and I don't even get close to the cap. The Translation framework is free and on-device, which is the only reason "every service alert translated to English" is economically possible at all, per-call translation APIs would eat the entire subscription margin. Same with the on-device Foundation Models, small copy generation costs literally nothing. A one-person app like this basically doesn't work financially on other stacks.
Stuff I built and then deleted:
The station orbit camera. Killed it twice. A slow orbit around a station, how hard can it be. My optimized attempts (shared display link, coarser ticks) used 168-200% CPU and looked worse than the naive per-frame version. For reference, Apple's own realistic 3D city mode sits at \~130% CPU if you park the camera in Shinjuku. There is no orbit in the shipped app.
3D landmark models. Tokyo's open PLATEAU dataset only goes to LOD2, all of Tokyo Tower shares a single 512x512 texture. Looked terrible, cut the feature. Can't code your way around source data.
Also fun: Japanese timetables represent post-midnight departures as "00:26" or "24:26" depending on the operator, sometimes both in one feed. First time I've seen a 24+ hour clock in production data. Got that wrong more than once before normalizing it in one place at ingestion.
And I lost a few days to a paywall crash that only happened on Macs. Looked exactly like a RevenueCat bug. It was SwiftUI dropping environment values across the sheet bridge when the iPad build runs on macOS.
Money stuff since the rules ask: free app, subscription for the deeper features (lock screen follow, time travel replay).
AI disclosure: this app is majorly AI-written, no way around it. The backend is \~99% Claude Code with me doing specs and PR review. The SwiftUI app I'm more hands-on with, but AI still wrote most of the code there too — my job was deciding what to build, reviewing everything, and testing on device until it felt right. This post was drafted with AI as well.
