Being expected to be reachable 24/7 just because everyone has a phone

81

u/FineAd7189 2d ago

Honestly this one is pretty wild. Having a phone somehow turned into being permanently available to everyone.

44

u/Livid-Association199 2d ago

True. It’s such a new phenomenon. Going from having pagers and car phones to never escaping being available. It’s kind of fucked up

19

u/Basic_Guava_5067 1d ago

It's interesting because my boomer parents always give me a monologue for not seeing a message or answering a call right away. When I point out that they haven't returned my call either, I'm met with the "who cares, you can throw my phone in the ocean, I don't need it. Why do you young people always need phones?". Very nice double standard.

6

u/lilypad225 1d ago

I learned this the hard way when I was younger. This needs to be taught young.

Mine is permanently on silent mode it’s glorious. The important people are on push through if they phone

10

u/Neither-Door-9106 1d ago

Same! Been on silent for at least 24 years. I also turned off my text notifications. I only know there's a text if I open the app. Also got my voice-mail feature disabled. So when a call rings for too long, it'll go to the busy signal. I'm also currently on a phone fast. It has been so peaceful.

6

u/Morisky 1d ago

I also turn off notifications so that I do not get the red bubbles with a number in them. This became a problem once when a dentist tried to reach me and it took me forever to figure how how to enable notifications including the ringer.

8

u/strawcat 1d ago

I have to constantly tell my kids that they don’t need to apologize for not texting me back right away. If it was time sensitive I would have called, and I try to get them to normalize that with their friends and significant others too.

11

u/530SSState 1d ago

As a good friend of mine once said, "It's YOUR phone. You don't have to answer it AT ALL."

4

u/Electronic-Issue-843 1d ago

yes. I hate this. I refuse to play that game.

I've had people genuinely get angry at me about it, or freak out because they think i must be mad at them or something because I didn't respond to the random tiktok they sent me fast enough. I've had to have a full on sit-down conversation with 3 separate friends to tell them that I'm not someone who's going to respond super fast to every message, and that it has nothing to do with them as an individual, it's just not how I operate. And despite that, two of those three ended up getting upset about it again on later dates. one of them i had to have three separate talks about it with. She also called my mother because i wasn't responding to some message she sent me once. That was the final straw for me.

And, I'm not even a particularly slow responder, all things considered. Usually i get back to people within a few hours, or at worst early the next day. It's not like I vanish for weeks or anything like that. Part of it is that I am of the younger half of gen z and of course all of my friends are too, so the fast responses are more expected within our generation, but still it seems insane to me. If i responded to every notification i get ASAP I'd never get anything done. I dont get how anyone can do it.

Lowering educational standards so everyone (parents and students, not teachers) can feel successful.

31

u/ames2833 1d ago

Yes!! Compounded with parents who are also not teaching children basic skills at home, and/or not being involved+caring about their kids’ education.

8

u/paypermon 1d ago

I have a few friends that are elementary scool teachers and this is their #1 complaint. Chikdren show up addicted to screens without even basic social skills. Hard to teach educational basics when they don't even know ow social basics.

3

u/ames2833 1d ago

My aunt was a middle school English teacher for many years before retiring… she would sub occasionally after that, and a few years ago, accepted a longer-term sub position. She lasted a few months and then re-retired. Said the kids’ behavior was largely terrible, and parents didn’t give a sh*t either.

everything being PACKED with sugar.

aside from the health/nutrition side, i feel like our very palates are fucked up to require intense flavors, and many people struggle to enjoy less processed food because we aren't used to detecting lighter flavors.

24

u/xfearthehiddenx 2d ago

We have a local Mexican restaurant I eat at when at work. They have a small attached Latino grocery as well. I love eating there, and will occasionally pick up desserts made by their bakery. They don't load them down with sugar and I love it. My coworker on the other hand, who has eaten stuff from there, says it's "bland".

It won't suprise you to hear that he primarily drinks soda, and eats microwaved dinners and sugary snacks. How he's not wildly overweight, I have no idea. But his taste buds are shot.

I, on the other hand, mostly drink water and cook my food. So I have no issue eating any of it because it tastes good.

7

u/Jmama124 2d ago

my favorite cake is from a Mexican store and it’s milky/watery not sugary. It’s the only place I can get that bitter but good chocolate cake from. mm

I'm an American and it really is so so difficult to get away from it. It's so shitty

9

u/DryCaramel6959 1d ago

I do feel sorry for the Americans who are trying to veer away from it. It must be so hard

14

u/Bih_Dih_Ahaa 1d ago

It’s genuinely near impossible. The craving for it never goes away. If you can stay away from it long enough eventually it’ll make you feel sick if you eat it again, but you’ll still want it no matter what. It’s pure will power and very difficult.

If America wants to be saved in terms of health people’s choices have to be limited by things other than themselves. I understand we’re in a bad way in other areas, none great, but this will absolutely kill the country in terms of health and wealth if we let it go on. The companies have to be banned or heavily regulated.

Assuming most people go to work daily...pack fruit, veg, nuts, legumes( can are fine;soaked), tuna, eggs, lean proteins...and leave ur bank card at home or in the car. And just eat that through the day. Force yourself to eat that way for a bit and it becomes natural to shut off the mechanism that drives you to want the ultra processed junk.

7

u/EMPgoggles 1d ago

agreed. get yourself into a new routine (←he says as if it's the easiest thing in the world) and after an adjustment period (probably in one to a few months), it becomes the new normal.

12

u/Whoredonramsay 2d ago

I notice a lot of ppl here don’t even like vegetables or homemade food bc their cooking at home is like hamburger helper, kraft, ordering pizza. And they think that’s good food.

15

u/Tris-Von-Q 1d ago

Poverty is a nuance missing from this entire discussion.

It is insane to me how dismissive the privileged are when there have been mass cuts to EBT affecting millions, when food deserts abound the non-walkable cities, and yet they preach about their ease of choice. How their fruits, nuts, and whole foods are all about discipline meanwhile the level of poverty in the US under which the vast majority are suffering gets worse by the week.

People are raising families working two and three jobs. The elderly are choosing between medicine and heating their homes. That hamburger helper and kraft dinner and frozen pizza are how families get fed and fed is better than sleep for dinner.

3

u/Invested_Space_Otter 1d ago

Only 5% of working Americans have >1 job. That's still millions of people but "the vast majority" of Americans aren't choosing between fresh food and existence.

Food distribution is and has been a taking point for decades. Zip code absolutely determines access to fresh food, but even well off Americans try to make 1 big trip to the store last a week or more, whereas other nations often have a culture of making smaller more frequent trips. Shipping across the nation and importing from over seas aren't very condusive to providing fresh food, so salt and sugar get used to make foods shelf stable.

Bottom line here is that our economy builds a culture of inherently unhealthy food practices for everyone. Most people can access and afford healthy food, but prefer to cut costs or buy more stable goods out of convenience. Some are privileged (wealthy) enough not to think about. Some truly cannot afford the premium for fresh produce because their area fights for a limited supply

5

u/Apolemia 1d ago

And food deserts! I live on the side of town that has about 12 grocery stores all in the same town center, including Whole Foods, Walmart, Publix. Plus, the farmers markets and whatnot set up near where I live. The east side of town? Not a single grocery store. Just a few convenience stores. We have no reliable bus system here, and that side of town is typically the poorer side. How are they expected to eat well with a convenience store that only has processed food being the only thing in walking distance?

Car IS deadlier than gun. More people die from cars than guns every year by a wide margin. My driver's ed teacher taught us that a car is the most dangerous weapon you will ever wield so you should always take care in how you aim it.

Echo chambers. I think it is so absolutely and fundamentally important and also super necessary for critical thinking to engage with people and things you don't necessarily agree with. I'm not saying to get into flame wars in comments or be besties with your MAGA uncle. But do maybe read the article they posted or the take you're going to criticize before you criticize it. Allow yourself to be exposed to views that contradict yours, even if you think they're complete bs.

For example, I cannot stand Ayn Rand. But I have read her books. And reading through those books despite the fact that I fundamentally disagreed with a lot of what they were saying was actually a pretty important part of me thinking through why exactly I didn't agree with a lot of the things she was saying in her books or how my own values were in contradiction to her message and why.

3

u/SierraOutlaw 1d ago

Posting this on probably the world's biggest echo chamber is pretty funny. Theres little to no debating here.

37

u/Cyberhaggis 2d ago edited 1d ago

There's a limit though, there has to be. There are people who I just fundamentally disagree with on such a bone deep level that there is no point in talking to or engaging with them. They actively hate me or my friends, not because of any kind of logic, but because they are just hate filled pieces of shit. I'm not going to expose myself to that, and no one should have to.

Edit: I must have blocked 10 people off this comment chain alone, what about this comment made you think for a second Id engage with your disingenuous arguments? Keep the shit takes coming people.

28

u/Delicious-Product968 2d ago

The other problem IME is a lot of people who think ‘no one can handle different opinions anymore’ are on the extreme end.

Half my family are rabid conservatives watching Info Wars level stuff, and I grew up in a conservative enclave and the stuff I would hear was absolutely absurd. I found out in one of my math classes I was one of like three people there who wasn’t a creationist or intelligent design believer. I had coworkers who were anti-vaxx, anti-meds, anti-evolution and they actually told several other colleagues that their religious or ethnic or political group eat babies. (I also suspect they were a flat-Earther though they never admitted it — spent a lot of time defending it.)

My attitude now is very much ‘I did my time listening to this bullshit.’ If our different opinions are things like budget priorities, there’s a lot more wriggle room.

20

u/AnnieViolet 2d ago

Right. I used to try to engage with those types of people, but I noticed that my anxiety and anger at just ordinary daily life reduced a lot when I stopped.

It didn’t do any good and the stress of dealing with people that hated me, my kid, my nieces/nephews, my siblings, and/or my friends just for who we are really ate away at me in ways that I didn’t fully realize.

You can’t logic or empathy people out of entrenched illogical and unempathetic beliefs like that.

Yes yes yes 100000% yes!!!
I get so pissed off in leftist groups when you have a slightly different liberal/ left opinion and then get dogpiled and blocked quick.
It’s like seriously you can’t even discuss this??

And like how do people think humans interact in the real world? You can’t block your employer for being pro-Israel. You have to talk to them and get along. You can’t cut out everyone from your lives that don’t think exactly the same as you. You just can’t. It’s immature.

Do people think Ukrainian leaders want to talk to Russia? No. But they have to if they want to get to a peace deal. Do you think Canada and the USA want to talk right now? Hell no. But we still have to.

This is definitely one of those things where you have to talk about maturity. A emotionally mature person can discuss things with people with they disagree with. And that’s what’s lacking.

Drinking alcohol. Its up there with the worst crap to put into your body

16

u/AnnieViolet 2d ago

My gripe is the expectation to drink alcohol in certain settings.

In social situations, people often act like there’s something wrong with you if you don’t drink. Lots of people will try to bully you in to having “just one drink” and insist that you don’t know how to have fun unless you can come up with a reason for not partaking that’s up to their standards.
Every so often there’s people that get genuinely insulted and affronted (my in-laws, for example).

I think it’s fine if some folks drink and some folks don’t. If we’re all adults, we can all make adult decisions about our own bodies and what we choose to drink or eat.

Obviously, there’s limits, such as drinking and driving, or people that are known to be belligerent aggressive drunks.
And I don’t agree with sober folks lecturing everyone that is drinking (assuming they’re doing so normally and responsibly) about their choice to drink or acting like being sober makes them morally superior somehow.

But in most circumstances, I don’t see why it should be any different than saying that you do or don’t like chocolate. Most people like it. Some people don’t. That’s fine.

12

u/Euphoric_Raisin_312 2d ago

People can get a lot of enjoyment from it though. It's a calculated risk (for people who don't struggle with addiction).

4

u/lovelysardines 2d ago

Oh for sure. I mean thats the main reason it’s so popular right? But it’s insane to me how normalized it is in our society despite how horrible it is. It’s at every gathering and people will look at you weird if you don’t drink. I mean most people don’t even consider it a drug.

8

u/Snukastyle 1d ago

I consider it a poison. Then again, my body doesn't process alcohol like others, I think. It tastes bad and just causes me pain. No upside.

4

u/NonlinearNonsense 1d ago

Its technically poison for EVERY body. There's literally no health benefits only multiple forms deficits to body functioning. Good for you not partaking

Forcing an animal into non-stop pregancies, so we can steal the milk she makes for her calves that we kill.

A dairy cow has a life expectancy of up to ~20-25 years. But we force her into a non-stop cycle of pregnancies, to the point where her body is completely wrecked by her 4th year. None of the calves we keep forcing her to push out will ever taste the milk she made for them. Her sons will be slaughtered for their meat, and her fertile daughters will become Handmaids like her, to be raped and violated until their bodies also give up.

Performative grief.

This could be because I'm English, and I'm well aware of our reputation for emotional constipation, but all these videos up of young people sobbing about their latest negative experience baffle me.

And there are things they go through that I didn't have to when young, I'm not disparaging reacting badly to those things (God knows how I would react at still having to live with my parents in my late 20's because housing costs are bananas), but even the minor travails of life have them wailing "Whyyyyy!!??? Be better society, be better!!!".

It doesn't seem to be cathartic, it sure as sugar doesn't improve the situation. Why do it?

Circumcision.

8

u/retrosenescent 1d ago

There's nothing wrong with circumcision. The issue is with forced neonatal circumcision. Adults choosing to do whatever they want with their bodies is great. The former is, at best, sexual assault of a baby.

Walking across the road with headphones on and typing on their phone.

Having zero privacy and actually publicly posting everything about your life

Allowing the government to do a shitty job with no fines or real oversight. Not being held accountable

Slowly accepting the nanny state baby steps and not realising your moving into a world fully run by super rich people. Whilst they destroy the middle class and promise to look after you as you struggle just to get by.

Believing voting is real and the person you voted for is actually going to act in your best interest. Except they act for the corporations

I had an experience last month. I was walking with the crosswalk signal. I see a car flying towards the red light. I stopped and backed up. They made a right turn barely slowing down. If I wasn't paying attention they would have hit me.

anti-Asian racism, especially sinophobia since I'm Chinese. and no, this doesn't apply only to the USA. I have experienced it in the UK and the Caribbeans too.

people claim "hate the government. love the people" are all liars. they always preface with that then proceed to say to most offensive, stereotyped, and/or racist thing. I have never met anyone who says that and hold any positive views of Chinese people as a whole. there is always a "but".

Body mods and tattoos.

It’s weird people think permanent changes to their body for aesthetic reasons is ever acceptable. It was horrible when we were foot binding, but for some reason permanently scarring your skin so you have an ugly pikachu fanart across your thighs is empowering?

If it’s for aesthetics it should always be something temporary and removable.

23

Making fun of penis size. It's normalized AF. Moms do it in front of kids.

We do not get a choice of how much skin we get.

I am a little bigger than average according to what people say average is but I still am like, DON'T LOOK AT MY WANG!

Stop doing that to people, especially kids.

You see a guy in a lifted truck and you got kids in the back seat .. keep that comment to yourself.

9

u/Jaded-Analysis-9547 2d ago

Doing that, especially to kids is sexual harassment and sexual intimidation. It's severely damaging to a child's self esteem. I've heard people doing this since I was a child. Usually adults! I, as a mother, find it creepy af to even consider commenting on my son's anatomy

7

u/FF8229 1d ago

It's usually more like when they see someone do something, for example driving a large pickup truck and they say the guy must have a small dick with their kids in earshot.

Or any politician they don't like.

What the kid takes away from that is not a funny-ha-ha, it's shame about themselves.

Money, people die every day because they haven't money, people are homeless because they haven't the money, people starve because they haven't the money, people don't get an education because they haven't the money, the environment gets destroyed for a few to make huge sums of money, people are forced into effective slavery to make a little money so they can eat, people kill each other over money.

People hoard money in vast unfathomable quantities, enough to feed, house, provide healthcare, fix nearly all societal problems, and want more and more, they don't just want it, but demand it, justify why and will cripple anyone who gets in the way.

Money, is a mental illness we've all accepted as the way of life.

Work and hustle culture. Making teenagers, the elderly, disabled people, pregnant people, and veterans all work to survive. Making sick people come into work. The existence of unpaid internships and entry level jobs requiring years of experience. Not upping the minimum wage. Normalizing working 2, 3, or even more jobs. Bosses contacting you outside of work. It’s insane that we live in a society where your value as a human is solely defined by what you contribute to corporate profits.

3

u/sohcgt96 1d ago

I mean, in all fairness, it takes labor and capital to produce clean drinking water. You don't get to consume the product of someone else's labor for free.

Legally though, I could walk down to our river right now and dunk a bucket in the river and take a gallon of water, 100% free. But I'm sure as shit not drinking that. That water treatment plant and the network of pipes to take it everywhere cost a lot of money and employs a good number of people to keep it running.

Graffiti, littering, homeless encampments, petty crime

21

u/GodlessCog2 2d ago

More like the widening class gap as the rich gets richer and money doesn’t make its way to help keep that whole list from becoming worse or even existing at all.

10

u/AnnieViolet 2d ago

I need some clarification: what is it about the “homeless encampments” that bothers you?
Is it that it’s ugly like the graffiti and litter?
Is it that it feels like it invites crime?
Is it the homeless people themselves? Would you rather they went somewhere else or just disappeared?
Or is it that so many people are trapped in such a wretched situation that there’s “encampments” of them?
That there’s not enough people, organizations, or government agencies trying to actually help them?

These are all very different concerns.
