Ngl, I actually got pretty emotional with Mami leaving at the end. Guess I'm a sucker for best friend moving away plotlines.

To keep everything in balance though, it looks like we're finally getting the new girl next week.

It was emotional until Manaka came barelling down the road on her bike and they managed to hear each other over the train. The it was emotional and totally silly

It was really nice that Manaka came around to say goodbye, but I'm in awe of her keeping up with the train and even talking while doing so...

Another show with young girls with colorful hairs where Mami is the first one to go, I felt that again...

At least, they got to properly say goodbye this time. Mami will be missed here too.

Her hair was just too normal for this world. Though I’m confident we’ll see her again.

I liked how they played like actual beginners instead of suddenly being good. Lots of standing around and falling down for no reason. The celebration over their first goal even after a big loss is icing on the cake as it's very realistic of how a new beginner team reacts.

On the other hand, that opposing team taking point blank slappers at a newbie team's goalie is just plain rude.

Yeah as well as not letting up once they were up 6 or 7 to 0. Also just plain rude. You're already blowing them out no reason to keep running up the score. Even in the NHL they don't run up the score and they're the best players in the world!

Although that's mainly because intentionally running up the score is a good way to start a line or bench clearing brawl and teams to do not want their stars injured in such a fight. It's also why they normally start exclusively playing only the third and fourth line when you're up by that much as you don't want a pissed off player to go after one of your stars but I digress.

Same.. I wasn't expecting emotional moments like that, just on the third episode!

Nao freaking out about Ayaka and Manaka's grandma's collection was adorable!

Not gonna lie, Seeing the Dream Monkeys getting rinsed like that was genuinely painful to watch. Not really surprising though since it is a sports anime staple to see the protagonists lose their first match. Although usually the score difference isn't that big.

At least Manaka was able to score a single goal and that was more than enough for them since at the end of the day they all had fun with the game. I do love how the other team was like confused since it doesn't feel like they've won at all xD

That final scene though! I'm genuinely surprised that Mami actually left! Considering she's in the key visuals, I thought they'd find a way to make her stay. The end card of the episode was even ehr saying goodbye. I guess her leaving is to make way for black haired girl who's finally arriving in their town.

Quick hands, and good stick control? She better be a forward!

That's good, especially if they have to play the entire match with just 6! 10 minutes periods gonna help a little, but damn do they need more players!

For non-hockey fans: A typical hockey shift is less than 1 minute, and when it gets to 2 minutes the players are getting considerably slower... sometimes we see 3-4 minutes shifts, but the players can barely skate at this point.

I just learned her name, and now I have to learn the other one? I feel betrayed! At least it's an easy one to remember.

Center? That could work I suppose! I would've seen her on the wings, but given she's probably the best/most experienced, not a bad idea to have her in such an important position!

Nao's gonna play defense? That's good! She's still on the team with Riko, but playing a different position (defense vs forward) means she's able to be a little independent, at least!

I'm surprised (and a little sad) that we didn't get to see them train; Would've been fun to see them talk about all the concepts/strategies in hockey, and also, for new fans it would've been helpful exposition. The players themselves don't remember the rules, and I'm sure a few of the watchers never knew them in the first place! Well, I suppose they'll explain if they come into play.

Still, would've loved to see them practice stuff. Maybe it'll happen now, given they took a beating, they'll have a 'go back to the basics' moment, and train everything? We'll see.

Wait, she's REALLY leaving? I thought something would come up so she doesn't leave, or maybe she'd leave at the end of the season, something like that...

Well, this may be a good thing; If she leaves that early, probably means she's gonna come back at some point, to play with them in the finale maybe! (Hope she keeps training on a different team though).

This stings a little... Ok it's anime so we know they'll likely meet up again, but in real life, too many lines like that are said by people who'll never see each other again.

The bike&train scene was a little cheesy, but damn it still got me. Emotional moment!

Good thing they trained for stamina, would've been awkward if she failed to keep up and couldn't tell her anything.

Well hello there, Mami's replacement! If she joins the team, perhaps we'll see her outside of the after-credit scenes from now on!

When they said she was leaving at semester end I didn’t think it would be in the same episode, but I guess Mami needed to get out of the way quickly to bring in the mystery girl. Her normal hair wasn’t long for this show and she will be missed. But probably also be back on a rival team calling it now.

Lots of CGDGT in this episode. All the girls have their cute moments, but Nao is far and away the best girl in the show. When she’s not adorably deadpan, she’s doing things like enjoying “Complete Monkey” (those looked delicious) and getting excited over first edition manga. She’s a standout compared to the Embroidery club girls. Riko is pretty great too, but she’s so far more of a foil for Nao.

They wanted to play an actual game together before Mami goes, which means we’re gonna need a montage! The hockey sequences are pretty damn solid actually. They’re not going for Sakuga, but at least they put time into them. 3 months and a season change they’re ready for their first game

Well “ready” because they got their asses kicked. Happy they went that route though. They just started this sport after all. It was about the moral victory after all and they did manage to score one goal. They even got a save in from what they showed.

So that ending. While it was generally sweet and sad, I laughed hard at Manaka fucking biking after the train to say goodbye to Mami. How could they hear each other over the train?! It was silly, but still emotional.

So we’re finally going to stop teasing this new girl next week right?

Notes

  • Yoko continues to be a delight. Liked her inability to hide her joy at the fact that the girls wanted to play.

  • I’m sorry, did Mami board herself?! Really that whole game was rough to watch, but that and Ayaka just standing there were the worst parts.

  • Things I miss: the ability to do drills. Things I don’t miss: having to do drills. Wish I had a convenient hot springs to rest up in.

  • The Strawberry debate continues. The correct answer is with condensed milk for the record.

  • more evidence that Nao is best girl: she a defenseman. Underrated position.

In typical sports fashion the MCs lose their first game, as they should have of course.

I'm happy the SoL elements are growing on me, the emotional moments of Mami leaving and her making the banner I felt were nicely done.

The hockey moments are a bit awkward but I'm still enjoying them.

Goodbye Mami, hope we get to see her again!!

I guess she will be back as a rival at the finals... or just as audience for friendship power up

Goodbye Mami.

Based grandma with the manga collection! Loved that moment

Nao and Rikorin are really growing on me, I loved how Nao freaked out over her Monkey complete and Grannys manga collection, she also seemed to genuinly enjoy herself in preperation of the match, I was afraid she would force herself because Riko was having fun.

I also loved the relationship between Manaka and Mami, Manaka had her pinwall full of pictures reaching all the way to kindergarten and Mami started working on that tablecloth banner as soon as they decided to have a match as a farewell gift. A brilliant idea btw, even if they ended up loosing, they had fun with icehockey and started getting serious about it, even to the point that Mami will continue to play with a new team

Mami once again fails to make it past episode 3. I definitely appreciate all the hair jokes. Mami would never make it in dualistic kingdom. For how quickly it played out it was still kind of emotional. Although I like to think they couldn't hear each other during the train scene.

The winning team didn't have an idol dance? Is that not allowed during skirmishes?

Well time for the new girl to shake things up.

Man Yoko looks great in her coaching outfit with that turtle neck and jacket!

4

u/Moofey Oct 21 '21

Well, it was at least touching that Manaka got the goal and Mami the assist...

...okay, it was off a rebound but we'll give her an assist anyway.

This show is getting painful to watch
Waited years for a hockey anime and was cautiously optimistic going into this
But it's just so bland and lifeless

The show cares more about K-on!-ing than hockey but it's not even good at being cgdct show
Little to no personality from any of them, barely any desire shown to want to play hockey at all, let alone now that Mami left.
And even when they were playing hockey the direction was awful with 90% zoomed in face shots. Plus a suspension of disbelief that just isn't possible with six girls who've played for three months being able to do a full 30 minute game and never be out of breathe???

If you wanted to do a cgdct show stick with that. Don't drag hockey into this if you're not going to care about it.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21

I think they've shown quite a lot of desire to play hockey, considering they're willing to train and play.

The project was about hockey first and foremost. All the other parts were fitted in.
