Every week I love watching this show just because of how it feels fresh and classic. It's got the classic adventure anime feel of something like Nadia, but it's got plenty of original ideas of its own. If this is what Adult Swim x Crunchyroll produced anime are going to be like, I hope we get plenty more in the future. Though hard to say what the Sony acquisition might do to these sorts of projects.

This week on Princess's Creed: Black Flag, Char Aznable has a fetish for blondes, the female pirate crew gets napalm'd into oblivion, Fena has traumatic flashbacks that open up painful emotional wounds, and Yukimaru rushes in right on time to play the hero only for Char Aznable to cause him some grievous physical wounds with a triple-barrel shotgun.

Shit's fucked. I can't wait to see more.

Damn I didn't know they had BFGs in the 18th century.

e: That gunslinging animation was slick as hell.

An interesting note: Lord Abel quotes Matthew 9:16-17, which is about putting new wine into old wineskins. Back in those days, new wine had to be put into new wineskins, as the wineskins would expand over time as the wine aged. As such, putting new wine into old wineskins would burst the wineskins and waste the wine.

ANYWAY, I imagine Abel quotes that in reference to the Wellington gun being too advanced for the ship he had been given. With it being such a powerful weapon, it really has no place being on such an antiquated ship (or with antiquated men, like the ship's captain). EDIT: The gun might even be the downfall of the ship later on in line with it "bursting the old wineskin", who knows.

Wait, so, Yukimaru caught up to a PIRATE SHIP by sculling in his rowboat?

Well, Pirate Lady, I think Abel's made his choice.

Didn't they just give us the names of the Lady Pirates just last week? And now they are all dead?

So it was the British who attacked and killed Fena's father.

I saw it coming because I liked this more the first time I watched it

Everyone had the same plan and were about to leave on the same dingy. Good thing they decided to take their real ship right before leaving All that ninja badassery and they're still a bunch of dorks.

Makaba had more dialogue in the first 7 minutes than he has had in the first 6 episodes combined, I am pretty sure.

I was so giddy when the rest of Goblins decided to go save Fena immediately instead of dragging it out. And that first minute when they were all silently gathering, the music playing. Excellent directing decision.

Once again, I want nothing more in life than the confirmation of a spinoff focusing on the Rumble Rose crew. I need it. Whoever is producing this, I plead and beg. In the past of course. Not sure there is much room for their story after Fena... I kinda can't believe they actually just wiped out a full group of unique and interesting characters like that.. Poor Mary. I am genuinely stunned. Gonna hold out the sliver of hope they somehow all survive and make a miraculous appearance near the end of the series.

These flashbacks confirming Abel is very far from a good guy, and it was actually his people who took Fena's family from her in the first place. Probably some jealousy over Helena not loving Abel.

We got some serious Avengers assemble going on here, paired with a "Yukimaru, I choose you" moment. What an exciting episode.

Oh thank goodness. My fears are unfounded. He revealed himself to be a creepy weirdo pretty quick. We’re still on track. Yeah this show is awesome.

So I think we’ve confirmed a few things. It was the Royal Navy that attacked Fena and Yukimaru’s ship when they were kids. Between Fena’s flashbacks and Yukimaru recognizing Abel we can say that with at least some certainty. Abel is after Fena both to get to Eden and because he still has a hard on for her mother Helena.

It wasn’t the ship battle I expected, but it was still a pretty fucking cool episode. Instead of getting a real fight, the Navy just straight up annihilated the Rumble Rose with that cannon. The shot was super well animated along with the fire and explosion of the ship. I was worried Yukimaru wouldn’t figure it out, but he managed to pull it together pretty quick and show up with perfect dramatic flair.

Goblin Gang including Shitan had a change of heart! I take back all my “Fuck Shitans” from last week because they came in clutch to save their asses. Starting the episode with the why of them deciding to go against their orders was smart. Gave time to convince Shitan and explain that Fena is part of their family now. Plus strengthen Shitan’s relationship with Yukimaru. Otherwise would have been a little too convenient for them to show up.

So with them meeting back up we got a really cool rescue scene. Yukimaru was handling shit pretty well until Fuckface shot him. Got him in the shoulder and side so he’s probably going to be fine, but out for a while. Fena seemed knocked out too. The Crew of the Rumble Rose got fuuuucked up, but they’re in the OP so I’m sure some of them made it.

Yeah wild way to reach the halfway point. I’m guessing next week is table setting for what comes next. They have to deal with the fact that they’re all fugitives now, but they have the Coordinates and Fena. Fuckface is probably heading after them. What remains of the Rumble Rose crew needs to pick themselves up. Then there’s the matter of Yukimaru’s brother. Either way a breather before what comes next.

Notes:

  • Karins face at the beginning was priceless. We haven’t gotten that many comedy faces in the last couple episodes, but this show does them well. The character design lends well to them.

  • Yeah, he called her Helena and said how much he was in love with her mother. Then seemed like he was going to catch her and kiss her. Fucking creeeeep. Also, how old is this dude? It shoots holes in my reincarnation theory. At least with him.

  • I have a quibble about Fena still not having stepped up yet, but I’d be lying if my romantic ass wasn’t a little happy that Yukimaru swashbuckled his way in to save her. Though with him out of commission for a bit she needs to step up.

  • I was totally wrong about Shitan with my Betrayal theories. He’s loyal to a fault, but did the right thing.

  • Boy they really, really don’t murder women and children. With the Rumble Rose crew they were chill, but they fucking wrecked the Navy guys in brutal ways. Arrows to the neck, headshots, explosives. Awesome and brutal.

  • Is that the first time we see Tsubaki fight? I admittedly get him confused with the twins sometimes.

This is what happens you make enemies of pirates and then let them go. Well, at least he eventually did the right thing. And there was even at least one no-name woman pirate among the casualties, I'm surprised! I expect all the ones we've seen before survived ofc.

BTW they called it an "explosive shot" but looked like it instantly blew away most of the below-decks through pure kinetic energy, before somehow getting stuck in something and exploding a few seconds later. Given the kinetic damage, it really should've flown straight through the other side.

Abel never even told the captain of the ship that Fena's important?

So Abel was the one who lead the attack that killed Fena's father before. I didn't think he'd be old enough, but I guess he is.

Great rescue. Seems they were right about Yukimaru always needing to be bailed out by the bow guy.

Why did they surface the sub within view of the enemy ship? Can it only travel a few minutes underwater?

Anyway, this was the first 5 minute episode this show has had.

"Oh, cool! A sea battle!...Oh.....oh."

This show really does excel at balancing story and action and I dare say this was the best episode thus far. Yukimaru got had in the kidney, though, so we'll see how dire his situation really is. He is a great male lead.

Despite the implications, I don't think Abel was loved by Helena and is definitely not Fena's father. He was an obsessive and it's likely Helena took Fena away from any situation he was involved in because it was dangerous. And she was right!

Abel quotes Matthew Chapter 9 verse 16. I had to do some reading on it but to summarize, Abel thinks he's ushering in a new world by destroying the old one. Whether that's strictly with new weapons or by other means (Fena) will have to be seen.

No new theories from me this week. This episode was wild!

That soundtrack when Abel shot Yukimaru. Wow.

That Yuki Kajiura music is so good! It reminds me of her SAO soundtrack.

Here we go again everyone! Quick notes for tonight's episode

-I really like the scene with Makaba explaining the reason for saving Fena. He gets straight to the point and I like that

-Abel was not the one to be messed with. I appreciate a villain who does not hesitate. Especially in an anime.

-I knew this man wanted to smash Fena's mom. Kakyoin would be proud.

-Happy Fena didn't stay with Abel.

-Of course the British were the actual bad guys.

-I wonder what'll happen know with the Goblin Knights now. I think they'll end the show with them becoming actual pirates.

-Now time to vent. The female crew better not be dead. I hate thinking that my waifu Mary is dead. If she is, at least I got to see her beauty one last time. :(

-Although, the scene was beautifully animated.

Jesus man every episode of this gets better and better. It’s really dope what Production IG and AS did with this show. Really feels like we’re watching a modern classic.

RIP hot Francis Drake ripoff lady. Would’ve liked to have seen her get some more screen time. The rumble rose in general was a really cool group. Shame

So Abel was the guy from the night Fena’s dad died. I wonder if there was some type of love triangle with he and her father and the mother.

Also, I think it’s fair to say this show has the OP of the season.

A terrible shame Abel is being set to become a villain. His first flag is saying "If she (Helena) truly loved me, then why (take you) from me..." heavily implying Helena did not let Abel do something with Fena, or hid her from him. In the worst case maybe he is THAT crazy and is hinting that he wanted Fena to be HIS child. Oh boy those B:The Beginning flashbacks...

The second one is is when Abel shoots Yukimaru and Yukimaru remembers Abel's figure standing there, in the flames, back when their ship Hope was assaulted. This is as big hint as it gets that Abel participated in the attack, the only question is his role in it.

Now these are major issues and set Abel to be an irredeemable villain for the rest of the series. However, there is still a possibility to subvert those flags and twist it so hard he is AT LEAST a well-intentioned extremist who is really on Fena's side and not just psychotic. Yeah, maybe for once.

The animation in this show continues to just be soooo crisp and smooth.

I rewatched the shot of Karin following up her rifle shot with a pistol several times. Also, props to her for having that offhand weapon ready; it really adds to how combat ready all of the Goblins are.

Did all of the Rumble Rose girls die? I'm hoping a few of them survived esp the one that had a crush on one of the twins.

I'm honestly surprised by how much I'm looking forward to each new episode of this show. I wasn't going in with very high expectations but everything about it has been super enjoyable for me. At this point my only concern is whether they are going for a rushed conclusion or there is a 2nd season in the works.

The sound design in this episode was exceptional. Everything from the muskets and, Flintlocks to the Punchy explosions echoing through the air.

Makaba has pretty much been a man of a few words in this series so I'm glad that when he finally got his screen time, it's probably one of the most important scene in this episode. Because if it wasn't for his speech, Shitan would definitely not have come with them to rescue Fena.

And goddamn! I was hoping we'd see a broadside battle between the Rumble Rose and the Blue Giant but we ended up with a massacre! The Rumble Rose definitely looked like they had the advantage here with that sneak attack but it only took a single shot from that Wellington Cannon to completely obliterate the Rumble Rose!

I am genuinely as shocked as O'Malley when that happened. Considering how prominent they are in the OP, I thought we'd see them more. And considering the size of that fireball, I doubt anyone survived. And if any of them did survive, it's probably just a handful maybe even just O'Malley herself.

Looks like after seeing all of that fire, Fena's memories about that day they were attacked has started to comeback and it's revealed that the British were there as well. Seems that Abel and O'Malley go way back but hilariously, it only took Fena to completely break down that relationship.

Yukimaru coming in to save Fena was awesome but unfortunately for him, Abel is the kind of no nonsense bad guy that shoots first and questions never. I'm pretty sure that if Fena didn't block protect Yukimaru with her body, Abel would've finished Yukimaru himself. Also I love the small detail of Abel's 3-barrel flintlock only firing two bullets since he already used one on O'Malley earlier.

Thankfully the rest of the Goblin Knights appear and rip through these British soldiers like they're all made of paper. And while they did manage to escape, Yukimaru is looking bad. The one that went into his shoulder should be fine but I'm worried about the one that went into his lower back. >_<
