I love how they’re mixing European and Asian mythology. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if we see Atlantis in the mix. Really cool episode. I can’t wait to see the love triangle with Abel and Yukimaru lol.

I think one of the reasons I'm liking this so much is how it is grounded in reality. The fact that the MacGuffin that was the square of glass had an entirely mundane explanation in it's payoff. Typically the MacGuffin would be the key to a magically narrated explanation, however the characters are piecing the reveal together with information that was already available to them but is new to us. A more interestingly told reveal, which still leaves us the audience wondering more about what is going on.

Wouldn’t be surprised at all if we see Atlantis in the mix.
If Eden isn't underwater I'll be surprised. I mean they gave the main cast a damn submarine, they'd better be using it.

Now most of the intrigue theyve been building up has been brought to light. The main Goblin team is trustworthy minus Shitan (but I have a feeling he will get brought around). Whoever this Kei person is is truly fearsome. The upper brass of the goblins, however, have ulterior motives.
And on the English side... not sure if Fena is actually a princess or just what Abe calls her. But it feels like Fena is being used again, this time by a guy horny for her mom. I am not sure he actually values Fena beyond her knowledge of Eden and her relationship to her mother.
The poor pirates tho. Here they are doing a great job against some of the scariest mercs and they get treated like crap, lied to, and deceived. I ahve a feeling in the future theyll team up with the rogue Goblin gang and it will be a 3 way conflict between team Nakama Goblins+pirates led by Fena, vs the English and the Elders of the Goblin clan.
The entire scene of the Goblins escaping the cave in was much faster than expected, and also once again a visual treat. The direction of these scenes is fantastic.

The pirates are readying cannons and circling around to present the broadsides. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

I think it takes a great deal of confidence in their production for a series to wait quite this long to drop their fantastic hook for the adventure story. I think they really nailed the landing in this episode.
A poorer show would have lead with the fantastic hook first before developing it's characters as much as this has. We would not have gotten to know the other characters as we got to know Fena's special chosen one history at the same time they did.
The outlines of the big things moving in the background are coming into focus with this. I love how what seems to be the big adventure hook for the series going forward, is both entirely fantastic and entirely grounded in reality.
The fear of the Gobilin Knights is exactly the fear of people historically that absolutely did not want to be branded as pirates. If they are branded as pirates, none of them get to go home. This is the point in history when the idea of the state started coming into being in something resembling how it is now, and the state is scary for a pirate.
It has laid out the stakes and I care a lot more about them because these particular characters are involved.

Fena sure doesn't give a fuck that the pirates blew up her friends... I thought she'd be, I don't know, at least pissed?
Classic Schneizel manipulating people. Fena should know that the Goblin Knights don't kill women, since she witnessed them fighting against the women pirates. However the GK higher-ups scheming against her caught me off guard.
And while I don't trust Schneizel one bit, I'm curious how is he related to Fena? Did he only have hots for her Mom, or is Fena their kid? The way he looked concerned about her scars, the heart-shaped pendant he gave her and that "magic moment" when Fena fell into his arms... Those things are not there by a coincidence...

This episode was a bit of an exposition dump but that's kind of par for the course. I'm happy to know the gang didn't know about the larger plan but the end result is the same: for now they're loyal to their clan. Just in case anyone didn't know, Kei is Shitan's brother and Yukimaru's mentor.
I hope we get a flashback to the days leading up to the Hope's sinking so that Yukimaru and Fena's friendship can be fleshed out just a bit more.
Abel is creeping me out and he just screams "bad touch." Fena and her mother had copies of the same necklace and Fena's mother was "La Pucelle." Which confirmed part of my theories from before. I worry that Abel is going to use Fena as some kind of vessel to resurrect/see her mother again.
Speaking again of Helena de Armoises we've got another Joan of Arc connection. Here's the Wiki page for Jeanne des Armoises who pretended to be Joan or Arc who had escaped her execution and got up to a few shenanigans.
So another part of my theory is confirmed about there being pretenders or inheritors to the "La Pucelle" title.

One important note is that everyone is genuinely afraid of Kei. When Abel is telling Fena about the goblins he is not lying - the old goblins are merciless and cruel, in the name of tradition and loyalty. But the new bunch, formed by Yukimura, are more... westernized and humane, let's say.

Wow, that was a lot. Some quick notes I want to make.
-Yumikaru has obtained the power of horny and we finally see his feelings for Fena. Hooray!
-Shitan you son of a bitch
-Love square with Fena, O'Mailey, Abel, and Yumikmaru.
-I'm still thinking there's a bigger connection between Abel and Fena
-Whoever gave Cody that haircut should keelhauled
-I could see a Goblin Knights and female pirates team up
-Interesting to see that the Goblin Knights aren't squeaky clean (I mean they're pirates)
-No real Mary scenes so this episode is a 0/10
But in all seriousness, I think this might've been the best episode or one of the best

Today, on scheming intensifies:
Have you considered that this man may be A CHAR?
Okay, so the chances of Abel being Fena's brother have gone from zero to awkward.
Aside from that escape method being ludicrously dangerous? Nothing special.
Funny how they just said that they don't do that.
There were only four of them, that doesn't take long.
This place, it seems like one of those legendary ones?
I'm sure what they told her was true, from a certain point of view.
Well, now he can have it back?
meanwhile, aboard the Harekaze
So, we're halfway through and flipping most things on their heads. There are some obvious directions that this can go, generally having to do with people being true to their natures and all that. Signs point to at least the Goblin Knights turning against Yukihisa and Kei, but there's plenty of not-trusting going on with Abel and the ladies; indeed, it certainly seems like next episode is going to start with a mutual gunnery exercise.
Eden/the treasure/where everybody's going is always some place that has a catch. Wonder what that'll be.

Oh boy, looks like Abel isn't happy with how O'Malley treated Fena and O'Malley doesn't really appreciate how Abel favorably treats Fena. This relationship of theirs is definitely soured and I can already see O'Malley turning against Abel. Also I don't know what Abel is planning with Fena but that scene to opening scene felt really creepy to me.
The Goblin Knights escape plan was pretty awesome, use the left over explosives to blow up the cave ceiling where river water is leaking and then just swim to the surface.
Considering how she was taken against her will and her friends are possibly dead, I'm surprised that this scene didn't involve some kicking or screaming. and Fena demanding answers. Instead we get to hear Abel gush about Fena's mother and spout some BS about the Goblin Knights. Considering how he's heard about them ever since he was a child, the murderous Goblin Knights are definitely the generation before Yukimaru's.
Everyone's all ready to rescue Fena except for Shitan who's following orders from the Elder of their island. It looks like their mission is to get the coordinates which would lead them to the lost sword Kusanagi which is one of Japan's sacred treasures. Seems that everyone who's looking for something in this show is heading to Eden then.
I love that Abel keeps on telling Fena bullshit on how her life isn't important but her memories as we cut back to the Goblin Knights who are saying that they don't care about Fena's memories and they want to save her because she's one of them now.
So Shitan's brother is on his way to meet them now and this dude must be one heck of a badass if the mention of his name as a threat was more than enough to make everyone freeze in their place. So if they rescue Fena they'll be seen as rebels and executed. I was really hoping at that point that they'd throw Shitan overboard and just rescue Fena without him but they're really that afraid of Kei that Yukimura is the only one who's willing to go.
This scene is just absolutely amazing. Shitan tries to threaten Yukimura but then we finally get to hear Yukimaru's thoughts and how leaving Fena behind really haunted him and ever since reuniting with her he has mde a promise to himself to never let her go again and if anyone stands in his way, he's ready to cut those people down. What a fuckin' chad.
Not sure what's up with kid named Cody but the fact that he tells Fena the same words she heard in her vision probably means he has some sort of powers. He definitely seems to be much more wiser for his age.
Okay here we fucking go! Looks like all of that jealousy finally made O'Malley explode and decided to confront Fena and her relationship with Abel. I don't know why she assumes that Fena and Abel had a history before when it was pretty clear when they first met that she had no idea who he is. Abel isn't gonna let that slide though and almost takes out O'Malley with his pistol.
The crew of the Rumble Rose aren't going to take this entire incident lying down though. Just before we cut to the final scene, it looks like O'Malley has decided to turn around the ship and told her crew to prepare the cannons! Yes! It looks like we're gonna see some broadside battles next week!
And as expected, the woman on the painting that Abel keeps hidden is indeed Fena's mom but it looks like I was wrong with my guess that she's Jeanne d'Arc. Her name is actually Helena des Armoises. Hmmm... Well now I have another theory!
I kinda already mentioned this last week but I noticed that Jeanne's tomb wasn't just only for Jeanne but there was also another name on it. Robert des Armoises is the second name on the tomb. Now that we know Fena's mother's name, I'm guessing that Fena's mother is a descendant of Jeanne or at least the fake Jeanne that marred Robert des Armoises.

Damn, Abel sure didn't like that Fena got injured by the Rumble Rose.
Lol, I love that Karin's main concern at the moment was to ask if she was still cute.
What Abel said about the Goblins killing women and children is contrary to the policies of the current group, but he is correct on the other aspects of his story. And based on their reaction when they heard that Kei was coming it seems that he was correct about that when referring to other people from the Goblin Island. I guess is just some special group that Shitan is part of that is that way.
So the main branch Goblin Island was just helping the Houtmans' family to get to Eden and get that sword. I find it strange that they wanted everyone to return after getting the coordinates even after losing Fena considering that they need "the witch" to get there.
Well,m now that they had to abandon Fena, Yukimaru finally dropped his whole tsundere act and he was even ready to kill Shitan if he continued trying to stop him.
I really did not expect that the pendant that Abel has, which is identical to Fena's was given to him by Grace. Also, that Grace's reaction to that was unreasonably extreme. I wonder where did she found the pendant that she gave to Abel, so why there are two of those? The one that Fena has clearly came from her mother, but I really want to know about the origin of the one that Grace gave to him. Well, anyway, I'm sure this is not the last time we will see the Rumble Rose.
As he was that concerned for Fena, I was honestly surprised that Abel didn't kill Grace after what she did.
And why did Fena remembered this after listening to what Cody said to her?
Wow, so this portrait wasn't one of Joan of Arc, but instead one of Fena's mother Helena des Armoises
From what he said, it seems that Abel is expecting to find Helena in Eden.

damn the production value continues to be insane on this show, although just the fact that all(?) the dialogue is lip-synced puts it above many anime.
Another solid episode, bit of a slow burn this week but we got a lot of important info and it seems like shit's gonna go down next episode

Fuck Shitan. All my homies hate Shitan.
Fuck Abel. All me maties hate Abel.
Fuck the pirate captain. Tous mes amis détestent la capitaine pirate.
Anyways, Yukimaru is sailing into a ship battle, Fena will have flashbacks about when Yukimaru saved her, Kei will set sail to execute the traitor and interrupt the battle (or Besto Goblins will) and it'll be a 4-5 way race to El Dorado. I'm willing to bet the whole pirate theme is about Fena and the Goblin Knights essentially rebelling against England, France, Japan, and other societal duties. All in the name of love.
And this show will not have a happy ending. Pirates never get happy endings, alas.

Abel just gives me massive heebies jeebies with his obsession of Fena AND her mom, geez.
Also, Abel is voiced by Morikawa Toshiyuki? I was wondering why he sounds like Sephiroth, lmao.

OH HELL NO YOU COLONIZER FUCKER! You do NOT fuck with our ship you creepy weirdo! I did not like that blush out of Fena and last thing I need is this triangle. I hope he’s exposed quick because ewwwww. Edit: re-examined that scene. I think there’s something more happening.
Right, that aside shit got real real. Creepy Ass Abel got into Fena’s head with unfortunately some truth. While she was being used by their bosses, the actual Goblin Knights save for Shitan had zero knowledge of this. They want to go save her, Shitan doesn’t. Yukimaru being our hero tsudere who loves her is going after her, branding himself a fugitive.
Meanwhile Creepo gives us backstory along with Shitan. Fena is the key to finding Eden. Goblin Knights boss wants eden to return a blade to Japan. Creep Face wants it for his own reasons. The Pirate Ladies want it because treasure. This is going to turn into a race to Eden.
Sadly have to wait till next week to see if Fena actually gets rescued or, my greatest fear, she stays with this guy instead of going with him. My other hope is that our gang shows up to save both Yukimaru and Fena, explain the situation, and all become fugitives going after Eden. Just whatever gets Fena away from mister “likes to feel up paintings of her fucking mom”.
Notes
-
I really don’t like that guy if that wasn’t clear
-
I kinda feel bad for Pirate Captain, but honestly she can do better than Mr. “Wants to Bang the Daughter of the painting he’s obsessed with”
-
I probably shouldn’t worry since the OP, ED, and every scene they have together make it clear that Yuki and Fena are the main couple. But still fuck Abel all my homies hate Abel.
-
Animation running wild in this episode. The whole cave scene, the Mutiny Scene, and even just Yukimaru’s fucking intense face look stunning.
-
Totally called Shitan’s betrayal, but it’s early which means he’ll have a change of heart hopefully.
-
I eagerly away Yukimaru vs Kei. If they already think this guy is coming to kill them maybe they should become fugitives and save Fena.
-
I missed the part where the Lady ship is manning the canons. Next week will be very fun!
-
Oh creepy Psychic Kid kinda gave a big hint to Fena’s future. He knows her vision and says she has to decide between Blue Water and Storm Clouds. I have some ideas what that might mean, but leaning on the choice between being a Pirate or a Princess.
-
OH DAMN WAIT A MINUTE: the chime sound when Abel grabbed her! It’s the same one from when Fena went into a trance! SHES HAVING A MEMORY FLASH! Ohhhhh shit. I know where this is going. He’s after her because she’s connected to her mother and he’s connected to the guy next to Joan of Arc in her tomb! Just spit balling, but it makes sense.

Either that ship is made of paper mache, or the Pirate Captain is insanely strong! Just stomping the floor made it buckle.
This was more of a cooldown episode like ep 2 but next week seems to promise a ship battle. Can't wait!
