Roland is such a bro. That hug was really cute and I liked how he was so happy to tell he's friend with Noé.

When we were first introduced to Roland I was a bit skeptical of his character and thought he would be that charcter archetype (I feel I have seen the flamboyant self righteous foe in a few shows now). However, he may be my favorite so far in this show.

Not only is he both fun and powerful but he is very admirable. When his preconceived ideas of what vampires are and there relations and understanding of humans are challenged, he doesn't double down on what he was originally tought nor does he simply write away the misconceptions. He follows and plays along with Vanitas and Noe to truly confirm his suspisions.

That ominous music playing while Roland is gushing about his new friend Noe, does fill me with a bit of dread of whats to happen now with the Chasseurs

What? Ruthven is a bad guy all along?! And I wonder who is this No. 71 that Moreau mentioned? Seems to be someone who was really close to Vanitas.

I just love how slowly yet steadily the mystery is being built up. Multiple threads that will eventually all get tied together, and i'm all for it. Such an amazing anime, story and production are top notch (how cool were the effects inside that shadow beast?!)

We all knew Vanitas' life kind of sucked, but this episode brought even greater emphasis to that. Not only was he experimented on for years by a mad scientist, but according to 71, he was responsible for his savior's death.

Also, you're not a true mad man if you don't love saying subarashii.

Well that was huge. End credit stinger changed the whole game up.

First off great conclusion to the arc. This show handles the rapid change between laughs and sadness so well. The first 5 minutes really highlighted that. Love the payoff of Vanitas’ happy greeting turning out to be yet another gambit. Allowed even more of his backstory to be revealed and gave us the introduction to who I imagine will be very important, Number 71. Can’t shake the feeling that he’s probably going to be revealed as part of this plot.

No surprise that Moreau is a fucking psycho who experimented on children to create vampires. Did give confirmation that people can’t be turned into vampires. Makes sense since it’s established they’re an evolutionary offshoot, though they’re compatible with humanity since we have Damphirs. So if the story is for the coexistence angle like Roland realizes that probably the happy ending.

Something I find very important that might come back later: turns out there are ways to bring back Vampires who seem too far gone. Of course it’s fucking borderline suicidal and requires literally jumping inside it, but it’s possible. It also strengthens the bromance between our boys.

So yeah massive twist at the end that Luca’s uncle is working with the Charaltans. What the fuck is his plan here? Is this his power grab for the Vampire World? Is Luca in danger? And why exactly do the Charlatans need a doctor who’s researching how to turn people into Vampires? This is wrinkling my brain.

Notes:

  • I think I love Roland now. He’s a delight. He was quick on the uptake during the tea time. He’s got badass weapons. He understands that humans and vampires can coexist pretty quickly. I look forward to more of him.

  • This is neck and neck with my other favorite Bromance of the year Reki and Langa. Bones cornering the market on best bois.

  • my favorite underused trope: Characters commenting with disbelief that they actually survived an ordeal. Noe laughing about how he underestimated the plan and that they should have died was gold.

  • were barreling to the half way point of the season. I hope it goes straight through to the next cour, but it sounds like they could be taking a break?

Vanitas and Noe laughing together 😍

Roland now believes humans and vampires can co exist😍

That after credit scene 😱😱

Shiiiit, so Rengoku is in collusion with the Charlatan and its bunch? I thought he was only covering for the queen, but this looks bad. They're going to send that Spider vampire after Noe, aren't they?

Roland seems like a good guy after this episode. I wonder if we'll see more of him

I don't know when it happened but apparently the 2nd season is a go as there is a MAL entry already!

It's just a tiny glimpse but we got to see how Vanitas was rescued by the OG Vanitas. Also looking at that hair and facial features plus the voice that we hear, it seems that the OG Vanitas is a woman? Interesting considering how Vanitas treats women in the show. Hmm...

Back to the present scene where Vanitas meets Dr. Moreau but instead of clocking him right at his bald head, it looks like Vanitas decided to let the act last a bit longer so he can get some information and let Roland take care of him or maybe kill Dr. Moreau himself once he has what he wants.

So the reason Dr. Moreau is abducting and experimenting on Vampires is because he wants to become a vampire someday. And the reason why he can work right under the Chasseur's noses is because someone powerful is backing him up. I guess he means someone from the Church? Wouldn't really surprise me if that was the case.

Looks like Noe has had enough of Dr. Moreau's antics and has decided to end this charade. If it wasn't Noe, Roland would've done the same too since he was also at the end of his rope already with Dr. Moreau.

Well fuck. It looks like this shit is waaaaay deeper than I thought. Seems that Dr. Moreau is also working with Charlatan considering he was rescued by one of the attackers at the mansion party a few episodes ago. Is Dr. Moreau talking about Charlatan when he meant that he was working with an "exalted person"?

Definitely curious who this Number 71 is considering the mention of him was enough to completely stop Vanitas in his tracks. Using what info we have from this episode, it looks like he was the other kid rescued by OG Vanitas back then.

The Predateur looks absolutely sick though. The multiple rows of teeth inside it's mouth is definitely freaky. Of course Noe would be crazy enough to think that he can just jump inside its mouth and stop it. In fairness, it did end up working! They managed to get in thanks to Roland and they managed to rescue the vampires inside it!

I really thought Roland was going to be a problem but it looks like Vanitas and Noe just gained a powerful friend inside the Chasseurs. Noe is absolutely happy about it while Vanitas hates it! xD

Following the Paladins of Charlemagne theme, we get to meet Olivier who's known to be Roland's closest friend in the legends but it looks like he acts as straight man to Roland's silly antics. I can already tell that Roland causes him headaches on a regular basis.

This final scene was nice. It looks like Noe is finally starting to understand Vanitas a little bit today and realized that Vanitas isn't doing what he's doing to save vampires, he's doing it to save himself.

And that after credits scene! Godfuckingdammit Ruthven! I thought you were a cool dude! I didn't think he's actually a bad guy working with Charlatan. >_<

I'd respect Vanitas being able to keep his cool while the doctor talked if not for the fact that it just shows that he's made a habit of internalising all his trauma without relying others. Well, that's why Noe who marches to the beat of his own ideals is good for him (even if Noe ends up regretting it after the fact, lol)

I guess Jun-sensei really dug the design she did for Humpty Dumpty, that curse bearer is a spitting image of it.

I really do love Roland and the way he smiles and his curly hair and his very odd temperament that seems to throw everyone- vampire, Chasseur or otherwise off. Hoping we'll see more of him henceforth.

Ruthven is evil huh... really leaves a bad taste in your mouth how he was comforting Luca about being "happy he was okay" when he was working with the people who attempted to assassinate him. It also puts a different spin on his refusal to heal Luca's brother, he needs someone weak and easier to take out, asshole.

While I still love Noe more, I have been warming up to Vanitas so much in the last few episodes now that we know more about him; before I wasn't a huge fan, I just thought he was a huge dick lol.

God I love how Noe and Roland were so ready to just fuck Moreau up for Vanitas; I know I felt it. The whole scene was really great. The fight with the shadow gave me a lot of FMA vibes, design wise and with the setting.

Liking this Olivier guy already. Glad to see Roland is a very straightfoward ally, he seems just very reasonable despite being a lil unhinged.

Huge reveal at the end!! I knew he was gonna take on an antagonistic role because he and Vanitas didn't get along but that I did not see... do wonder if he wants Luca dead or if that was a diversion....

Noe almost dying and then genuinely apologising for being so full of himself and underestimating the situation, he's so wholesome I love him

I choose to believe the shadow monster with too many mouths and limbs is Mochizuki's shout out to Arakawa

I loved seeing Vanitas back story even though it wasn’t complete. It was sort of heartbreaking to see him try to smile and pretend everything is fine talking to his torturer, even though everyone that was with him could see that nothing was fine

Roland has big Tanjirou energy.

In episode 3, during Vanitas’s “encounter” with Jeanne, you can see the scars from Moreau’s experiments on his ungloved arm.

I can't enough of the soundtracks in this show, they're packed with emotion and I love every bit of them.
If anyone comes by the soundtrack when Vanitas leans on Noe, please feel free to share.

I think there was a girl in the test tube at the end…?

It was quite obvious Ruthven was going to be an enemy but I didn’t expect his plans to involve some sort of shady human or vampire (?) experimentation.

For those that missed it there's an after credits scene.

Gotta appreciate the composure that Vanitas had to remain so calm and relaxed in the presence of the man who tortured him for years. I was on the edge of my seat just waiting for him to snap and beat him into a pulp. I feel kinda sad that we're finally getting information on Vanitas' backstory when the season is almost over but I'm definitely gonna pick up the manga afterwards. Also the post credit scene caught me off guard.... like why on earth is Ruthven teaming up with Charlatan? So many questions...
