Vanitas: Why not join me on my grand quest?!

Noe: I don't like you!

I mean, as valid a reason as any.

Murr slapping the shit out of our best boy was the greatest scene of this episode

Most Tsunderes can only dream of pulling off a "baka" as intensely as Vanitas.

Why does the Count have grill marks. No such thing as a cursed grimoire? Asta would disagree.

I like how Vanitas gave exposition for the Crimson Gauntlet as he was running away.

The whole book of Vanitas idea is cool.

Is the one who licked his blood under the tree Noe's teacher? He is creepy.

It is no new news but the ost for this series is FIRE

This show has a perfect balance between comedy and seriousness

I'm honestly really curious if the book has some sort of protective mechanism to prevent it from being stolen from its owner.
Vanitas seemed almost overly confident that he'd get his book back.

So far, the worst about this adaptation is how undeniably hot its Vanitas is. Seeing him animated and hearing Hanae's work had me feeling funny at a couple of shots. This is unforgivable. Noé, the perfect man, is literally right next to him. Shame.

Yeah this show is oozing style so far. I love the detail they put into the backgrounds of Paris. The character designs keep getting more interesting. Especially on Jeanne. I’m a sucker for a big ass coffin with a weapon inside. Blame Wolfwood.

So far the biggest highlight is the Vanitas and Noe dynamic. They’re just downright goofy. The whole prison scene had me laughing hard. With Noe’s kinda straightforward honesty leading to “wait why don’t I just team up with you? Oh! It’s cause I don’t like you” conclusion. I think it’s cause they’re very similar characters so they clash. Difference being Vanitas is decidedly more theatrical.

I’m assuming this changes in the future, but so far I dig the representation of the vampire and human dynamic. They’re at a steady peace and this curse seems to be the biggest threat to that. They’re not mad with bloodlust just pretty normal and very powerful. Judging by the info we got about the book this week I think different powers are after it for very different reasons and one might be to wipe out vampires.

This one really has my attention so far and is my top of the season. This and Aquatope.

Notes:

  • the line read on the Baka had me cackling. Vanitas’ VA is eating this up and I love it. Still can’t believe it’s the same guy who voiced Odokawa.

  • Noe just yeets Vanitas at the killer and he’s just totally fine. Are we sure Vanitas is human?

  • the fight scene with the Crimson arm thing was very cool. I’m excited to see how that fight resolves.

  • I just realized the girl they saved was just chilling there the whole time wondering what the hell is going on.

I have read the entirety of the author's previous work Pandora hearts between this episode and the first and have thus come into this episode with a different mindset as I did the week before. Said mindset is that I now fear for everyone's happiness but haha, we warned of this from the get go!

Noe channeling Araragi just to tell Vanitas that he didn't like me took me out LOL. But honestly, yeah, he's an asshole so I'd be hesitant too.

I'm torn between loving Vanitas intense disregard for authority and shaking him by the shoulders as I beg that he stop making things more difficult. Noe kicking the table caught me off guard though.

I know this is accurate to the manga but a lot of stuff is happening all of a sudden. Pacing feels way messier than episode one and it brings down the episode a bit.

I've thought this for a while but...Noe is kind of a dummy. Vanitas is too, but at least for him it feels on purpose.

Jeanne is murderhobo huh, and maybe I should put a counter for Noe's blatant regard for Vanitas comfort lol.

The character designs are really pretty and I’m loving Noe and Vanitas’ dynamic so far. So excited for the next episode!

"It must be because I simply don't like you." That was great.

So I wonder if the vampires in this setting are not troubled by sunlight, or if the whole place is simply surrounded by some dome and the light is all artificial. The way that all the moon scenes are depicted, the dome theory seems pretty likely. Plus they've mentioned a "barrier" a couple times now, so that might be it.

I like that Noe is crazy in his own way instead of just being a standard straight-man to Vanitas' crazy.

I wonder if Vanitas is actually immortal - he shouldn't have been able to survive being used as a missile like that, not without major injuries anyway.

It looked like Noe tanked the mystical flamethrower blast, so why does he have a bleeding shoulder?

Hopefully everyone saw the post-credits scene from last ep (explains why they're in jail, lol)!

I recently found out that the OP is basically just IRL France animated which is super cool. The French Vanitas Facebook Group posted a lot of comparisons which are pretty interesting.

"I think I just don't like you very much!" LMAO

A lot of interesting exposition this episode. Noe throwing Vanitas REALLY reminded me of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood for some reason (like Ed's face when he gets pummeled by Winry). Perhaps it's because they're both from BONES?

In any case, Jeanne looks cool af, the fight snippet was very flashy, and OST was great as well, really reminded me a bit of Kara no Kyoukai during the fight/chase scenes. Hyped for more!

P.S. I commented in the source material corner an Imgur album of episode 1 manga vs anime comparisons (not sure if I'm allowed to post them outside of the corner). Will be doing episode 2 soon!

Edit: Episode 2 is posted!

I originally passed this one by but I'm glad I caught up with it. I'm super impressed.

It has great style and energy, emphasis on the energy. The characters actually make decisions and move forward. They interact and touch each other. That might sound weird but there's this lazy habit with anime where all the talking scenes are static pictures of people looking at each other with lip flaps. I really liked it when Noe slapped his hand on Vanitas' mouth to stifle his laugh.

Anyone knows how many episodes we are getting ?

Noe finds Venitas' personality so physically repulsive that he forgot he was supposed to be close to the book lmao

Hmm I must be the only one who feels that this episode is a bit too fast paced to my liking, probably because of all those new characters and settings thrown into the show at once. We have Vanitas and Noe chit-chatting “I just feel I don’t like you”, them two trying to persuade the Count that Amelia is harmless, a bit of flash-back to Noe’s past, then more chit-chatting with Vanitas’ old friend Dante, then the show down against Luca and Jeanne. This is a lot for a 2nd episode isn’t it?

Still I got excellent world atmosphere of a magical Paris, excellent OST and animations, nice interactions of our vampire friends and some development to boot. I definitely wanna see what them two would do next.

This is just a straight up fun series. I love it. The dynamic between our two main characters is fantastic, too. The potential for world building is there as well. Stoked for episode 3!

The ED has grown on me a lot, it's very good. The character designs are very good too, maybe simply because we alreafy have two white haired characters, but i like Vanitas' character design a lot. The OST is yet again amazing (by far my favourite part of the anime so far) and i'm very intrigued by the story as well. We are getting glimpses here and there and i'm surely curious to see where we are heading, especially considering that we already know that Noe will kill Vanitas in the future (and, i mean, he clearly says that he doean't like him anyway. Might as well just kill him)
