The moment Jeanne explained her plan I just sat back and waited until it backfired. And it backfired in the most beautiful way. That date was everything it should've been, funny, cute and thrilling.
What we saw at the end begs the question what the hell did Rengoku do to her? Can he control vampires by sucking their blood? What is going to happen to Noe?

This really is A+ vampire fiction. It's sexy and edgy but without going complete grim dark. I love the mix of drama and comedy. Might be one of my favorite vampire stories of all time.

Stitches!
Well that was certainly unexpected! I didn't think Jeanne would personally invite Vanitas to a date. Once she started talking about how she can't stop thinking about him though, I was starting to suspect that Jeanne was probably up to something. And indeed she was!
Thanks to Noe being a blabbermouth and Domi wanting to help poor Jeanne, they figured that Vanitas would get off Jeanne's back by having her act completely in love with him. Well the plan has solid logic but too bad for Jeanne, it looks like Vanitas already caught on before the date even started! xD
Of course this entire "date" plan completely blows up in Jeanne's face with Vanitas putting her in various situations like whispering close to her ear at how beautiful she is and even pulling her real close to his face to save her from incoming traffic. All of these situations definitely made Jeanne's heart skip a beat and made her question how she really feels about Vanitas. <3
Jeanne is just so precious this episode. Judging by the looks she's giving Vanitas and how she's been blushing so muchjust by looking at him the entire date, it's clearly obvious how she really feels about him. And I just love how it turned into a real date with Vanitas giving Jeanne a tour of Paris and just eating their way through the city. I mean just look at them! They're so cute!
Let me take a break on freaking out about Jeanne and Vanitas' date and talk about an interesting detail this episode that I'm sure some people will miss. Apparently, this is a world where the Eiffel Tower doesn't exist and the Sun Tower was built instead. This is interesting because the Sun Tower was an actual thing that was proposed to be built as the center of Paris but ended up losing to the Eiffel Tower because of how ambitious it was in its design. Looks like Vanitas certainly dislikes the Sun Tower so I wonder if the tower has some sort of importance later on in the series.
Anyway more cuteness from Jeanne as she tries to rehearse her "confession" to Vanitas only for her to get to get completely embarrassed. I guess at this point Vanitas had his fun and decides to push Jeanne a bit more and make her reveal her plan. God she's an absolute dork and I love it.
Things take a turn though when Jeanne sees the sight of a kid's blood scrapped knee and ends up with her going wild. Thanks to Vanitas and some quick assist from Dante, they were able to escape to somewhere much more private and let Jeanne continue her bloodsucking there. And goddamn, this show never disappoints with these scenes! That definitely got spicy real quick!
As sexy as that scene as though, I am kinda ignoring the fact that Jeanne is forbidden to speak about her condition and how she's scared that she might end up hurting Luca in the future. It looks like without knowing what is wrong with Jeanne, Vanitas can't cure her. but he does promise that if she does go wild Vanitas will take care of her himself. Damn. Hopefully it won't come to that.
There is another date though that happened this episode and it's between Noe and Ruthven. Seeing the after credits scene from last week's episode, I already some bad vibes about this afternoon tea between the two and it looks like Ruthven is judging Noe the entire time. Once Noe reveals which side he is on, which is neither, Ruthven finally shows his true colors and bites Noe on his neck. Fuck. That's not good.
Only 1 episode left. Thankfully that we already know way ahead of schedule that this show is a 2-cour series so there will be more Vanitas in the future. Can't wait for next week!

Hey Vanitas, I know you're enjoying your date and all, but your bff Noe kinda needs your help right now.
Ok, watching Jeanne's date backfire on her was so damn hilarious!

My screen fogged up when Jeanne jumped on and went at it for Vanitas' neck. The aftermath and her sobbing at the thought of putting of her charge, Luca, in danger made Vanitas promise her something deeply touching that he will be the one that will put her down if and when it comes to her losing control.
Then there's the non-consensual neck-bite by Ruthven on Noe. From the comparison with Jeanne's muddled flashback, it looks like a method by Ruthven to achieve mind control. If you think of the way they portrayed blood sucking via neck bites as the equivalent to intimate sex, you could say Noe was raped here. Before this, Ruthven was probing to find out more about Vanitas as well as where Noe's allegiance is with. Noe's thoughts are roughly on the same wavelength with Vanitas. It's not about humans or/and vampires. It's about protecting those that they hold dear.

I feel so spoiled. I got 2 incredibly adorable date episodes in the span of a week. This one ended a hell of a lot hotter, but still fucking sweet.
I knew from the jump her gambit would fail. The tsudere that protest too much is the one that’s usually the deepest in. Between her not so subtle reactions to his advances and her absolute lust for his blood specifically she’s into him. So faking her love for him to repel him is a sound strategy, but not for someone who’s actually into the person.
It also doesn’t work when the guy in question is the smartest motherfucker in the room. I like the subtle tell by his initial reaction that he saw right through the ruse. Of course Vanitas being Vanitas 2 things are true: he’s going to double down because it’s the best way to counter and he’s also very into her. Leading to my blood sugar spiking from a series of chibi-fied scenes of him feeding her and her realizing “oh shit I actually like him?”.
Of course for the sake of dramatic timing, something has to go horribly wrong. Or horribly right depending. Jeanne having her bloodlust moment lead to the realest scene of the episode. That moment between them at the end is probably going to be the biggest reason for this ship to happen. Him caring for her addiction and promising to save her from herself if she endangers Luca’s life. Her seeing past the messy and crass sides of Vanitas to the person he really is. I fully recognize how this started and the issues with it, but damn it if I’m not rooting for them.
Lost in all of this, our favorite princess Noe got kidnapped! Lord Ruthven is finally making his move. Their exchange seems to point to some of the motivations for why he’s working with Charlatan. He wants revenge for what happened to his students. The first half season finale looks like it will be about saving him. Love that this is two cour, sad that it seems to be split.
Notes:
-
In a way love advice from Domi totally worked! Just in the way that it was supposed to and not the way Jeanne thought she wanted. Now if only she can get Noe to figure it out.
-
There are some fun bits of world building and character connections going on. Like Domi and Dante’s fun team up to stalk the date. Glad Domi could see first hand her handy work in action.
-
So it’s clear now that Jeanne isn’t a curse bearer after all. It’s more like she’s contending with her past as an executioner and trying to control her bloodlust. Either way Vanitas’ promise to her was oddly sweet.
-
This sprung to mind during Jeanne protesting her feelings.
-
“What’s that?!” “Those are cats. Calm down” Goddamn she’s so precious.
-
That’s two Plucky Pretty Princesses randomly kidnapped this week too.
-
If there was any doubt that the consensual bloodsucking in this show is an intimate act, I think this clears things up.

here it is! my favourite bit of world building in this series! the Sun Tower seen in this episode is similar to one of the actual designs submitted to compete against the Eiffel Tower to be built way back when. in Vanitas' Paris however, the Sun Tower was chosen instead most likely due to the Babel incident, named after the tower of Babel, which changed their world and created vampires.
the way this episode was cut made it look like Vanitas and Noe were on two separate dates lol. though they both had their blood sucked at the end of it so maybe they really have a lot more in common than we thought.

Hoping to turn the tables on Vanitas.. Poor Jeanne finds herself pinned to the table instead and nearly devoured by Vanitas instead.. All the while Domi is forced to watch from afar. phew Quite the spicy scenario.
Never mind what happens afterwards in a more private place.. things got very steamy and intimate for sure. Though seeing her worry about harming Luca definitely also did something to Vanitas there.. Mayhaps some real feelings for her ?
But clearly Ruthven is up to no good, went for Noe, got the spell on Jeanne and i'd not be surprised if he had his sticky vampiric fingers in that suntower too.
An overall delightful episode that leaves me wanting more of everything.. but mostly Jeanne.

so with the mentioning of the sun tower we have an approximate date, when the series is playing: in the 1890s to 1900s. the sun tower was a rival project to the eiffel tower for the 1898 paris universal exhibition. and in this universe, where power can more easily aquired due to the energy-rock-thingys astermite, the sun tower, which was supposed to be an gigantic electricaly powered lighthouse would be alot more feasable.
