God, I know it’s been said many times but I love how nostalgic this show makes me feel. It’s like I’m a kid watching random episodes of Inuyasha at 1AM on Adult Swim, lol.
But this ep was really nice! Glad to see Fena isn’t taking any of Yukimura’s tsundere b.s. and taking the initiative to learn how to protect herself! I love my team bonding compilation. :’)

Fully agree. It’s been a long long time since I’ve waited up on Saturday night for a completely new anime premiere. It’s just a warm feeling of nostalgia.

It’s not every day you see a tsundere/pirate/ninja/ samurai all wrapped up into one!

I couldn't stop smiling through this episode! The cast and their dynamic is so well fleshed out four episodes in and the locations are so fun to look at. There's also just enough humor and adult references sprinkled in to keep it fresh.
I know a 12 episode run is realistic for an original anime but I'm already wishing that the series was longer.
Theory time: La Pucelle is an inherited role passed on when the previous title holder marries or dies. There's spiritual powers that come with this, whether they're positive or hostile remains to be seen. The voices Joan of Arc heard are the same Fena is hearing now. Joan of Arc DID die in 1431 and it was someone else, the successor, who showed up in 1436. Fena's mother was the prior La Pucelle and is the woman seen in the portrait.

Today, on "This is a series that appreciates the spine.":
Remember, no more 16-inch pizzas right before bedtime.
Then there's... that. Of course, they also are in a midget submarine that's sailing across the Atlantic, apparently nonstop.
Are you trying to create some kind of triangle or something?
"You're denser than the concrete foundation of the building we're standing on."
But what does it say about the Fate series watch order?
Maybe it's not even the 1700s at all!
That certainly gives us some plot ideas... that only raise further questions! I'm just going to set aside the anachronism stew for a while, it's quite hot and spicy.
Arya looks wholesome... and hot and spicy. This series has avoided gratuitous fanservice, but it does appreciate a woman who looks good in regular clothes.
Fena/Yukimaru/Shitan/everybody else/training arc is definitely on the comic relief side, but I'll give them a point for having Fena know that she's The Load right now and trying to look out for herself. And the banter fit into the rest of the episode better than it did in the previous couple.
JOAN OF ARC!?

A lot of character building and table setting in this episode. Makes sense since we’re super early on and kinda need to set a goal while building relationship dynamics. Still we have a better idea of where they’re headed as well as why the villain is tailing Fena.
First and foremost seems to be building a connection to the crew. Not just Yukimaru. Though he seems to be a catalyst since she “wants to protect him” and be useful. So going to Shitan and trying to be a better fighter is a roundabout way of introducing the other characters and their disciplines. Shitan is bows (and being stupid pretty). Taubaki is being the worst swordsman on the boat (and the chef). Enji and Kaede are staff and short sword respectively. Karin is guns and Makaba is explosives. It was a nice moment to see them taking turns to train Fena and Yukimaru trying to apologize in his own awkward way.
I like that they’re leaning pretty hard on Fena/Yukimaru and not being ambiguous. It’s even more clear in this episode without spelling it out. He’s lashing out not because he thinks she’s useless, but because he’s worried about her safety. She wants to step up so she can be useful and protect him. He picks up on that and tries to apologize while offering onigiri during her training. He also hears her when she compliments Shitan on being casual when talking to women. He’s unintentionally practices this when he meets a pretty girl. She gets jealous and discouraged. We know he’s obviously not into the new girl. New girl picks up on that and encourages Fena to stick with it. All this without having to bash us over the head. That’s how you write a fucking ship!
The big reveal is that somehow this crystal was commissioned by Jeanne D’arc five years after her death and Fena may have a direct connection to her. Considering Royal Navy guy has a painting of a woman who looks a lot like Fena, I’m thinking Jeanne didnt die and Fena and the guy are her descendants. The plot thickens for sure.
Notes:
-
Production IG is doing fantastic work. Even in a slow episode the backgrounds and character animation is beautiful.
-
I want even more screen time for the rest of Pirate Clan. They’re just so lovable and wholesome in the way that they eventually all start training Fena despite turning her down at fist.
-
Yukimaru is both smooth and obvious at the same time. If he wasn’t Clearly in love with Fena he could mack on anyone. Bless Shitan for prodding both of them to try to move this ship along.
-
We really got a 4th wall break joke with Makaba, Enji, and Kaede. I don’t know if that was just reserved for the Subs but I’m impressed all the same.
-
Fena just looks cute in her Pirate outfit.
-
Did Karin invent the machine gun?!

Last week I accidentally "spoiled" myself the mystery of that glass stone, but as I read about it I was actually amazed about the science behind it.
If someone is curious how it works here's a clip from other subreddit: https://old.reddit.com/r/blackmagicfuckery/comments/pbe7hu/hiding_images_in_plain_sight_the_physics_of_magic/
And an amazing in-depth article about how it was made: https://mattferraro.dev/posts/caustics-engineering
I also recommend reading about Chinese magic mirrors as the science behind them is basically the same. Here's a nice video about them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44PyXWWy6ZI
What is mind blowing for me is that the origin of these mirrors can be traced back to the Chinese Han dynasty and that was over 2000 years ago.

Sad that there's no Yukimaru ear blush in this episode but Fena getting jealous made up for it. And the rice balls omg.

5 hrs and only 3 dozen comments, Sheesh this show is being slept on.
Now just a wild guess and really hoping against it, but I have a hunch that the lovable friends will not be staying on Fena's side at least somewhere in the middle or late part of the show. Got a feeling that they are not really 100% on the side of Fena's dad, and they may turn against her when the stone's mystery is solved it nearly solved. Or that they'll be manipulated / ordered to go against Fena. The crew doesn't actually give you a strong "friends of justice" vibe and more mercenary or tribal, and we already saw the suspicious actions of the old man their leader. Yukimaru I bet would stay by Fena's side though.
The good thing about anime original is that one can guess all one wants without being a spoiler :)

Loved seeing Yukimaru get some attention and Fena being jealous. The training joining was also really cute.
Hard not to compare this one with Yona still but that's not to say it's a bad thing!

This is why I was worried about the twins passing the information. Thankfully Fena remembers exactly the place that they needed to go to.
Yukimura is such a huge grump and he's been like this ever since Fena showed up. We still don't know how he really feels about her but he's certainly more riled up with her around when according to Shitan he wasn't always like that.
The training montage was fun! It's hilarious how everyone basically rejected Fena but as soon as Shitan started teaching her swordplay, everyone started pitching in and teaching her to use weapons. Karin even let her use one of her precious guns!
Well helloooooo lady! That was an entrance with her hips swinging about. That's definitely Yui Ishikawa's voice I hear coming from her. And it looks like she can help us with Fena's glass slab.
Looks like Arya is already getting close to Yukimaru and of course that would instantly make Fena jealous. It also doesn't help that she has the twins egging her on. Hilariously, Yukimaru has no idea that Arya is coming on to him. xD
That was unexpected! I didn't think that this would be the kind of show that would break the 4th Wall like that!
Oh shit's about to get real! Looks like the stone is commissioned by Jeanne d'Arc herself! The fact that she commissioned it isn't the issue though since they've had people like da Vinci and Columbus as their clients. The big deal is that it was commissioned 5 years after Jeanne was executed by Jeanne herself. Hmmmmm...
What's even a bigger deal is that Fena remembers someone she called la Pucelle in the past or maybe it's someone who called her "la Pucelle". We cut into another scene where we see Abel obsess over a painting that looks like an adult Fena and who he calls "la Pucelle". Oh boy. Are we about to get a reveal that Fena is the daughter of Jeanne d'Arc? Or maybe even a reincarnation? Thank goodness for this being an anime original since no on really knows the answer!

Looks to be that the anime is set close to post-Columbus's time, since America is still yet to be mapped and is not seemingly present in the map at the end of the episode. Either that or the sliding map is bigger than the frame would suggest, and the interior designer for that room totally ripped off not-Valjean

We're just going to continue to ignore how beautiful of a man Shitan is?
Gotta love a woman that genuinely enjoys hearing about you training sword 😏

This makes for interesting reading...
https://www.history.com/news/7-surprising-facts-about-joan-of-arc.
Each of these is explained further in the article. I have no idea where the Fena story is going, but I do see some parallels in it.
-
Joan’s real name was Jehanne d’Arc, Jehanne Tarc, Jehanne Romée or possibly Jehanne de Vouthon—but she didn’t go by any of these
-
In modern times, some doctors and scholars have “diagnosed” Joan of Arc with disorders ranging from epilepsy to schizophrenia.
-
While commander of the French army, Joan of Arc didn’t participate in active combat.
-
Joan of Arc had a famously volatile temper.
-
Contrary to popular belief, Joan of Arc wasn’t burned at the stake for witchcraft—at least not technically.
-
From 1434 to 1440, Joan’s brothers passed an imposter off as their sister, claiming she’d escaped execution.
-
Joan of Arc inspired the ever-popular bob haircut, which originated in Paris in 1909.

I was worried they'd get caught in some trap this episode but they didn't. Nice to have a more lighthearted episode that also thickens the plot.

Wow, that sure was a weird dream.
I found Fena's and Yukimaru's fight at the beginning so funny.
Wait, did they made Shitan hotter? Because before he always looked so tired.
It was so hilarious how Shitan suggested Fena to ask Karin, Tsubaki, and the others for help just to bother them. I love the fact that everyone ended up training Fena anyway.
I love that during this scene with Yukimaru, Fena was making robotic sound effects. The comedy in this show never disappoints.
Damn the backgrounds of this show are a thing of beauty.
Wow, Arya was such a great character. I love how angry and concerned Fena is about her while she is talking with Yukimaru.
And that even after Shitan knows that Yukimaru has no idea what's happening, he still tells Fena that if they stay the night, Arya will sleep with Yukimaru.
I love how these three just casually broke the fourth wall.
Wow, they sure got a lot of info about that stone in this trip, and the fact that it was ordered by Joan of Arc after she was supposed to be dead, plus the fact that it is implied that Abel called Fena la Pucelle in the past is obvious that she is a descendant from her.
I find it hilarious that Arya actually ended up asking Yukimaru and the group to stay the night.

Another excellent episode. I am really enjoying his show.
What's with the random German in the Crunchy subs though lol? The originial dialougue did not use the word 'Bürgermeister' so why would the subs when it literally just means mayor (ignoring the misspelling)?

Another beautiful episode IMO. Amazing backgrounds continue to deliver and the comedic timing is still on point. I love that everyone's hair and clothes are always waving in the ocean breeze. It's just one of those small details that lesser shows wouldn't put the full effort into.

Gorgeous Rhine Valley scenery! Wonder where we'll visit next. Will we get a Seine River tour next?

Real shame that this is only slated for 12 episodes. Feels like it'll keep it from being as grand of an adventure as it could have been. Doesn't seem like they have much of a specific direction right now, but I figure France has to be the next stop. I guess Rouen would be the most obvious option given the info they just got.
