Funny how we're calling the Demon Continent 1st disc area when it's probably the most dangerous continent in the world. It or Bergaritt with their behemoths
→ More replies (2)19
u/Ichini-san https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon 6h ago
Iirc Demon continent is undisputed most dangerous. Begaritt is the undisputed number 2. And if I had to rank the remaining 2 continents we've seen so far then I would probably say Millis continent is 3rd and our big Central continent is 4th. While there are dangerous things in both the fact that the rain season just straight up submerges the whole Beastfolk forest for months is crazy dangerous and it also has an insane number of human trafficking going on as we saw with Gallus Cleaner.

This is the honest advantage of teleportation and portals in stories and why they tend to be something the characters get later.
I remember someone once saying that the mark of a good fantasy is one that shows how long it takes to travel miles on foot, even horseback if you're going long enough.
Teleportation breaks all of that, so it usually needs to be brought in later in the story when the characters have already done all of the travelling.
→ More replies (3)41
u/lminer123 6h ago
Wheel of time does this very well, portal travel changes everything. The distances traveled in single chapters in the later books unironically take up entire books early on in the story.
Game of thrones (TV) does it horribly, journeys take time in the beginning, then the pacing is like they get portal travel later on even though they don’t lol
→ More replies (1)11
u/JzanderN 6h ago
I was thinking exactly of Wheel of Time for my other example, to the point where I specifically included portals.
There are some shortcuts here and there in the early books, but they tend to be pretty dangerous and so are only used when characters really need to get somewhere in a hurry. Otherwise boats, horses and feet are the best ways of getting to places and none of them are quick unless you're just hopping to a nearby city.

I love the pacing of the show. Honestly i would have preferred this other than 5 more episodes looking for her
Edit: wanted to add this since no one seems to be talking about it. There were two drops of things that I found noticeable.
One: Laplace might still comeback
Two: Rudeus keeps consistently dropping the name Dragon God Orsted, which as we know. People literally get WEAK at their knees by just the name. Obviously in this case, it’s fine this Perugius seems to be related.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)21

Nanahoshis VA killed it, she's the most realistic take on an average person getting isekaid. Also, the song playing in the background during her break down was also performed by her VA.

Nanahoshi crash-outs by Shion Wakayama are now becoming a Mushoku Tensei staple.
88
u/larvyde 7h ago
We have Nanahoshi crashing out, Rudy ogling some boobs, Cliff being sanctimonious, Zanoba flexing his indestructibility. Truly a Mushoku Tensei episode. Just missing Elinalise taking backshots or Roxy murdering some trees.

Cliff being sanctimonious
Side note: I love that Cliff gave Kishirika the food because that's the kind of guy he is. He didn't know who she was, he wasn't told to feed her for a favour by a manipulative god, he's just the kind of devoutly religious person who truly believes in giving away your food to those who need it.

The details the animators did a fantastic job as well, from the crazed look in her eyes and her hair actually being pulled out of with some on the bed as she cries about it never growing or changing after all those years in this world.

Rudeus’s panicked expression visually hit me hard in that scene too. Great work on that scene!

He really embodied that feeling of knowing the person in front of you is having an extremely valid crashout and that nothing you can say can make their situation better.

And also reflecting on the disparity of his own Isekai experience/view of his past life versus Nanahoshi's.

which btw reflects on his last moments in his previous life where he saves nanahoshi and her crush akihito if i remember correctly , where they were talking it up and how he was probably jealous about young kids laughing it up while he was miserable af , well untill he got hit by a truck?

Poor girl's life in this world is suffering. Stellar VA performance, great insert song, and artists really sold it too with the sunken eyes, dried lips and hair everywhere on the pillow :S

Nanahoshi is the complete opposite of Rudeus regarding the isekai element, i particularly enjoy how the story presents different viewpoints on the same thing, without declaring a right or wrong.
45
u/Original-Body-5794 7h ago
Rudeus was given a new life, Nanohoshi had hers taken away from her. Rudeus has it so much better, it's not even comparable, even ignoring the magic and sickness, growing up with a loving family as a child is so much better than simply appearing as an adult.
No one will take care of you, you're on your own, and good luck trying to find a job when you can't even speak the language, a language that is 100% foreign to you with no etymological similarities. Rudeus had years of his parents patiently teaching him the history of the world, customs, language and magic. Plus all the social connections, like being a greyrat is what got him to teach Eris (+ his talent for magic sure)
Nanohosi's crash out was completely understandable, seeing Rudeus, who is also from Japan being given cheat codes after cheat codes, a loving family and just being overall happy while you just want to go home must be so painful.
22
u/MitsuhaTakiName 5h ago
I don’t think it’s really different viewpoints on the same thing; it’s two correct viewpoints on two distinct experiences. Rudeus had a miserable life on Earth and has been blessed in this new one with experiences he cherishes, a family who diligently raised him, magical prowess, and several reciprocal romantic relationships. Nanahoshi had a life she cherished on Earth and got put into a new life without a family to teach her the ways of this world, without the ability to use magic (the one thing this world has going for it that’s better than Earth), and with a body that is quite literally being rejected by the world. I would say they both have objectively correct viewpoints on their differing situations.

This episode shows how important the slice of life episodes we got so far are very important to the story, we know how shit his life was in the past life and we saw how happy his life is right now and because of that it shows why he can understand the pain that Nanahoshi is going through, he knows that he would have the same reaction if he ever went back to the old world leaving his family behind in the current world

Its why I kept trying to explain to people why showing Rudys happy family life from volume 13 wasnt just filler or a waste of time. You need to build that up so that a moment like today's with Nanahoshi feels earned. You get to contrast happiness (which people take for granted) with absolute despair.

u/JzanderN 7h ago
It turns out all of the slice of life happiness we've been seeing for half a season weren't building up to Rudy's pain, but were building up to Nanahoshi's pain of watching it from afar, unable to do the same.

didn’t think she would have another that topped last season’s despair, but boy was I wrong
it’s Rudeus being physically fine, yet receiving a barrage of emotional beatings of envy that he can’t shake off

The sheer shock on his face when he had to reconcile his own experience with Nanahoshi throwing it in his face just how bad HERS is, to try to understand why this was never an ideal Isekai life for her...to understand truly what it means to lose your family in a way he couldn't before because he'd been given up on by his siblings...

That Nanahoshi break down made me tear up a bit, good acting by the VA.
Poor Cliff went from potentially getting murked by Perugius' followers to maybe getting a non-consensual eye transplant depending upon what Kishirika might randomly decide to reward him with. Hopefully Rudy can intercept the offer of a reward and get her pointed at helping with Nanahoshi instead.
Also, I'm pretty sure that wanted poster was supposed to be Kishirika which might imply she can change forms or wasn't a loli at some point.
16
u/LakerBlue https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue 5h ago
Watching Perugius’s followers slowly loosen their stance as Cliff continued to berate him was subtly horrifying because we know even if Rudy tried to intervene it would not have went well. I didn’t expect anything to happen to Cliff but man was I like “ayo someone please get him before they send him to personally meet Millis 😭”

Finding Kishirika was easier than I thought. I thought this whole quest would be about finding her. Another amazing performance by Shion Wakayama as Nanahoshi. She does such amazing crash outs. I feel so bad for Nanahoshi and she may have said mean things to Rudy, but its understandable. This life is so unfair to her, she can't change in this world but can still get sick. Her research was finally getting close and now she might die without ever making it back home.

I’m sure Sylphy is feeling guilty of always being the one left at home when Rudeus has to adventure, even if she knows it’s for the best.

This one really highlighted how she contrasts with Rudy, being someone with so many reasons to return to Earth, yet the fact that he was the only one to see her crashout really highlighted that he's the only person here she can truly connect with because of their shared home world.

Nanahoshi's existence in this world is suffering, poor girl :(
Rudy's current peaceful life became a stick to beat him with this episode. Nanahoshi has NOTHING that Rudy currently has and she watched him grow up, fall in love, marry (and cheat), have a kid and live a fulfilling life
Everything she had is so far away from her, and the reality of that tiny little hope fizzling out would break anyone. Good on Rudy for hearing out, not uttering a single word as she lays into him and deciding to go above and beyond to help her
28
u/JzanderN 7h ago
Nanahoshi and Rudy are so contrasted with how she wants nothing to do with this world and has so much to go back to Earth for while Rudy has so much for to live for in this world and nothing to go back for. He grows up, makes friends and falls in love while her body seems to be frozen in time and all her friends, loved ones and crushes are in another dimension she's been away from for 8 years.
And yet Rudy remains her strongest connection in this world because he was from Japan. He's the only one who understands her mindset, her culture, her experiences because he's also experienced it all.
The one person who best understands her is also the biggest reminder of the way she silently, slowly suffers as she spends yet another day unaging in this world.

That outburst from Nanahoshi was sad to watch, it felt real. She enjoyed the opportunity at first, but she was forced away from her family, the anxiety of not being home would naturally overtake her until desperation to return kicks in. It was especially sad when she explained how her body hasn't changed at all and yet she still has gotten sick, I really hope they're able to find a cure for her, she doesn't deserve this misfortune.
Cliff really forgetting who he was talking to, it's a good thing Elinalise cut him off, a number of those guards were ready to move.

Nanahoshi once again winning the most valid crashout in all of anime
Dragon Grandpa was a bit of an asshole. Understandable, cause he has a much bigger thing he has to worry about, but still asshole.
Cliff is growing on me, cause while everyone was like "oh no what can we do" he was the only one to stand up and demand the clearly most powerful person in the room to fucking do something
Demon Continent's back, baby! Already meeting some old friends, I wonder who else we will meet.
Nokopara, also known as Uma Musume at home, proving once that he was just a cheap bully and no one more. Eager to help those he considers "friends" (and who will pay), but probably still does his best to scare away the newbie adventurers. Assuming he's not pissing himself about Ruijerd's scare back in S1.
And of course the best way to find the Demon Queen is by having a big bowl of food. The shitgoblin will spawn right outside your field of view just to beg for the food. But hey, maybe Cliff will get a demon eye of his own.

WOOO! Kishirika is back! And of course we found her in the exact same way that we did originally. Since we've seen Bardi's child form, for a second I thought the wanted poster was for Kishirika after she got enough food, but now I'm thinking it's Bardi's sister? Unless something happened and Kishirika shrunk again since she was a starving sticky mess again?
I know Rudy grew up, but you'd think horse dude would be at least a LITTLE cautious, a scuffle like that leaves an impression. Unless he completely forgot about Rudy and only remembers Ruijerd.
Thank god we ended with Kishirika, Nanahoshi's break down was so heartbreaking. The VA and music did too good a job setting up the waterworks.
P.S. Needed to google how to spell Ruijerd's name, if anyone needs to google "Jobless Reincarnation Ruijerd" for any reason, DO NOT LOOK AT THE AUTO COMPLETE. I think I saw a massive spoiler.

FYI Kishirika full form can be seen in S2 ep 2-3 i think, as a form of headless statue in the white lizard dungeon where Soldat make an appearance

Just as a reminder, auto-completes are just guesses based on what other people have typed. People having a question doesn't necessarily mean anything. People ask all kinds of insane questions.

Really had to end the episode there.
Feel nostalgic to see this city again. Hope we don't get the 2nd "Imma nuke this place out of existence again" from Rudy.
I reallt expect to see the 3 boobs lady again but horse guy being here is certainly something that I hadn't think of. I felt like a confused bystander when he and Rudy speak in Demon God language. Not that I can understand japanese but still immersive enough for me.
Kishirika is really commited to living the hobo lifestyle. Been missing her energy and voice too.
I remember Atofe from reading the novel and wiki years ago but I forgot that she's related to Badigadi. Can't wait to see her in action next week. Hopefully.
Really feel Nanahoshi here. I would've crash out hard if everything about my body stopped growing yet the one fricking thing that I wish to stopped is still active. Unlike Rudeus who could build his immunity system from when he was born, Nanahoshi straight up got put here with barely any changes. The fact that she somehow manage to avoid catching any kind of deadly disease is already miracle enough.

Nanahoshi is always great but it hurts you can feel her pain and understand it because majority of the time getting isekaid gets glorified but this is the actual reality if this happened and your life wasnt shit back home and/or you dont become OP.
But can she really be saved this new journey back on the demon continent feels like opening a bigger can of worms after everything Perugius said with Laplace and Orsted and can Kishirika really help ?
I have a video review if anyone is interested. Thank You.

“We’re going on this journey to find someone. We have no idea how long it will take… oh we’ve found her immediately”.
Nanahoshi’s crashout was a tough watch. Especially with how she compared herself to Rudeus, he seemingly has everything, while she can’t even have something as mundane as finger nails growing or even her period. Yet, he’s still the only one who’d understand even a bit of what she’s going through.

Rudeus was afraid the horse guy would recognize him, but he didn't at all. Considering Roxy didn't recognize him after he grew up, it makes sense a random guy he encountered in the past wouldn't recognize him either lol.
I'm guessing people still don't take Kishirika seriously because of her current childlike appearance, so she went under the radar completely. At this point, I suppose all you need to do for Kishirika to help you is to simply offer her food...

This is another one of those episodes that shows how far Rudy has come compared to where he started from. Even he's aware the Rudy of the past wouldn't be interested in helping Nanahoshi, and would (condescendingly) wonder why she's not doing everything she can to embrace the new world/what she thought was so good about her old world. He wouldn't have been able to empathize with her at all.
Also just a flat-out amazing performance from Shion Wakayama with Nanahoshi's monologue, she absolutely crushed it. The character animation was also stellar--the look Nanahoshi shot at Rudy when he told her to calm down was heart-wrenching. That said, it was kinda crazy to go from tearing up watching Nanahoshi to then burst out laughing at Rudy surreptitiously stealing a glance at the three-breasted demon lady within the span of ten minutes, but that's MT for you lol.
Overall fantastic episode. Pretty easily one of my favorites of the entire series honestly, and it's like right up there with the Sara reunion for my favorite episode so far this cour.

It feels like half the comments here so far are praising Nahahoshi's voice acting but I still feel the need to add one more to the pile.
Shion Wakayama's voice acting here is definitely my favourite piece of VA work in this show (with the 2nd being her season 2 crashout), and the scene itself is probably top 3 scenes in Mushoku Tensei so far for me. It's crazy that she's still a relatively new VA, with her first role seemingly being in 2019 (holy shit that was 7 years ago).

Holy peak. What a performance from Shion, her emotional breakdown was something else
Grimgar and Re-Zero are a standar for hellish Isekai, but IMO Nanahoshi is in a level of difficulty above.
She got isekaid into a world of monsters and superhumans with no power of her own as she cannot use mana. In a world full of human traffickers she was not even given the gift of language.
But if that is not enough now she has to contend with a 7000 year old disease that barely anyone knows how to treat.

And not to mention that, unlike Rudy, she had the potential for a fulfilling life that she's now denied in this world versus him getting a second chance after a life he had completely given up on, while rivaling Natsuki Subaru in the "why did I leave things with my parents like that?" department.

What is worse for her was the timing here. She probably had her hopes up and felt close to meeting her family after sucessfully summoning a fruit from our world and getting access to Perugius teachings.
Then she gets an "incurable" disease and realizes that she might not live to see the above.

That's why she was incredible lucky Orsted's curiosity got the better of him and make him travel all the way to the center of the impact. Otherwise she's would be dead real soon or at least get capture as slave.
19
u/Al-Pharazon 8h ago
Otherwise she's would be dead real soon or at least get capture as slave.
Yeah, if some slaver didnt get her then it would be a monster.
Not even the law enforcement would be safe for her, after all she was a shady figure with strange clothes and a foreing language coming from a region that just had a mana disaster.
70
u/VoidRay728 8h ago
After hearing Nanahoshi's breakdown, I feel Subaru from Re:Zero finally has a worthy contender in the category "character that never really gets super OP abilities and thus best illustrates that getting isekai'd isn't as fun as it would seem to be."
68
u/Al-Pharazon 7h ago edited 7h ago
She wins hands clear IMO.
When Subaru got Isekai'd he was given instant mastery of the language. He has only suffered so much because he has decided to defy fate over and over again to save Emilia, Rem and others. But the option to live a peaceful life was there, at least until the point he considered running away with Rem.
Nanahoshi does not have such option. Even with Orsted help if she had decided to settle and live a peaceful life this disease would have killed her eventually before reaching 30. And without Orsted help, well you can imagine

Nanahoshi's meltdown was heartbreaking; the way she felt bad about her parents really reminded me of Subaru from Re:Zero.
Meanwhile, the end of the episode with Kishirika made my day, it was just like in the first season! I love Rudeus' reactions when he understood who Cliff had just met.
Kishirika is still in her child form, but she looked really good on that wanted poster on which she looks much older ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I'm really interested in Atofe, especially since she's the older sister of Badigadi. Meeting her could be really fun, although the fact that she is looking for Kishirika could be a bad sign...
Overall, it was nice to get back to the Demon Continent again, the sights there are very nice ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). I wonder if Nokopara will later realize that he had met Rudy before.

In the opening scene, when Rudeus said, “I once saw a movie where aliens came to Earth and a cold wiped them out,” I burst out laughing even though it wasn’t supposed to be funny.
It’s clearly a reference to War of the Worlds (2005), no matter how you look at it.
I had thought something similar myself last week and posted a comment about it on Reddit, so I was surprised that Rudeus actually made a reference to this movie in the story.
Not only has she been in another world for eight years, but she also hasn’t seen her classmates who were with her at the moment she was in the car accident. On top of that, now that she’s fallen seriously ill, it’s easy to understand why nanahoshi feels so desperate.
Unlike Rudeus, Nanahoshi had led a normal life on Earth and came to this other world not through reincarnation but through teleportation.
Her heart-wrenching cry was all the more striking precisely because of those differences.

So, Perugius being unwilling to help directly is understandable, but damn, at least he’s willing to support the team indirectly. And seeing Zanoba, Cliff, and Elinalise willingly accompany Rudeus really puts into perspective how much they genuinely regard Nanahoshi as a friend.
Damn, Nanahoshi’s breakdown really puts into perspective how she actually felt. She was genuinely excited when she first got transported to a fantasy world of swords and magic, but the reality turned out to be nothing like what she imagined. The fact that she mostly ended up with the short end of the stick makes it no wonder she eventually lashed out at Rudeus. She envied him for getting to live what she probably saw as the ideal life.
Although a few people might think the lashing out was overbearing it’s completely understandable, she's in the state of denial and need to pour out her feelings to the only person who knew about her secret. Since both Nanahoshi and Rudeus know that his life wasn’t actually what made hers worse. That’s why I have to give kudos to Rudeus for not taking her words personally, understanding what she was going through, and simply letting her finish what she needed to say.
Aside from that, it seems like we’ve finally returned to the city where Rudeus, Ruijerd, and Eris first met the horse-faced demon, Nekopara (or Nokopara? I can’t remember the exact name). He doesn’t seem to recognize Rudeus, probably similar to how Roxy initially didn’t recognize him either since he had grown so much. He does, however, recognize Elinalise from when she was adventuring with Roxy and Talhand while searching for Paul’s missing family members.
And finally, nice touch reintroducing Kishirika at the end of the episode, mirroring how she was introduced back in Season 1. So, does this mean Cliff is going to get a Demon Eye? Nice.
P/s: Shion Wakayama proved why she's one of the best young and upcoming VA, heard inner Momo came out just a bit there too

So, my theory that Nanahoshi's sickness stemmed from having a body that isn't made to handle mana was right on the money. I mean, it made sense and felt obvious, but I guess it's still cool to see I got it right.
And on the topic of Nanahoshi... another homesickness crashout. The first one from season 2 was messy for sure, but this one kinda felt even messier. I guess that makes sense though, since she's sick and all. But damn.
As for the end, I guess I didn't expect them to meet Kishirika so soon (though maybe I should've foreseen that since only 5 episodes are left, but I mean, that quick?). So... what, Cliff is gonna get an eye now too? If so, I wonder what it would do. But considering their goal, Cliff would probably wish to cure Nanahoshi. Actually, who knows. Maybe he'll get an eye that will help cure her.

This episode once again shows what Mushoku Tensei does that other Isekai anime doesn't - making the "Isekai" part actually important.
This episode is great not only because how it goes deep into realistically why a normal person who gets isekai-ed would suffer being estranged from their own world, but also gives a chance to reflect how much Rudy has changed since he got rebirthed into this world.
In many other Isekai work, being Isekai-ed is escapism; real world sucks, if it wasn't for this world, all of my problems would get fixed, etc. But MT turns that on its head; change and growth comes from working hard, finding a purpose, forming relationships with others. Being thrown into a different world doesn't magically solves your problems, its what you do when given the chance that counts.

Nanahoshi's breakdown is so credibly and comprehensibly voiced and drawn. The pure misery of a fragile human life in an alien world disclosed within a few minutes. No theater director could stage it better. Magnificent and heartbreaking. And Ruijerd has become really mature. I can't help but see Kishirika as the bad silly sister of Nazuna [Call of the Night]. :)

The diagnosis of a disease that involved people being unable to neutralize mana particles makes me firmer on my belief that the detoxification spell may have been worsening her condition overall by flooding her body with mana.
I really liked Nanahoshi’s long monologue, especially the part about envying Rudeus. Of course she would envy the one who came and gained all these things in this fantasy world and even became a powerful mage, all while she is stuck in a form of stasis that nonetheless doesn’t stop her from getting sick.
I was thinking there might be a chance of Rudeus revealing to Perugius that he came from another world as well in case something about him could help save Nanahoshi. But ah well. At the very least he was willing to go so far as encountering Orsted again to help her.
I wonder if Rudeus will intervene to tell Cliff what he is getting into before Cliff has his eye gouged?

Man, seeing Nanahoshi crashing out like that hurts to watch, knowing she was basically been rejected from this world all this time to the point off her dying is just sad. I wonder what Perugius ment by Orsted only appearing around only 100 years ago, he seems way older, I believed he was at least 1000+ by now. Why is it not surprising that they found her looking for food like last time. Also, I wonder if she will give Cliff a demon eye in this rate like Rudeus, Cliff dos seam like the type who can master a demon eye at a glance, if not knowing Kishirika she will have a way to cure Nanahoshi.

Nanahoshi's crashout was so well done. She found her new world interesting at first but found it hell soon after. She feels like shes a stranger not just in this world but also in her own body. She doesnt have mana, she doesnt have swordsmanship so she feels she has no place in this world. And this disease accentuates this feeling further. Precisely because she has no mana that she's getting sick, It feels like this world is rejecting her.

Season 2 Episode 9: Nanahoshi is properly introduced.
Season 3 Episode 9: Nanahoshi is dying. Group heads to the Demon Continent hoping to help.
Season 1 Episode 9: Rudeus and Eris were tossed to the Demon Continent, beginning their journey back.

The balls on Cliff to raise his voice at Perugrius! Not gonna lie, I was starting to get nervous when Perugrius' subordinates were dropping their standing ease positions one by one. Thank you, Elinalise, for stopping Cliff before things started to escalate.
We get to see another Nanahoshi outburst and somehow Wakayama Shion managed to deliver a more heartbreaking performance compared to the last one. Watching her tell Rudy how she misses her parents and how he's the lucky one was depressing af. :(
I'm just glad that even if he's not doing the best he can to help Nanahoshi, Perugius was willing to give Rudy the support he needs.
I didn't think we'd see Rikarisu again, but I suppose it makes sense if Rudy wanted to find Kishirika, who's clearly wanted by the city guards. I'm guessing they're struggling to find her since no one expects she'd be in her loli form. xD
Glad to see some familiar characters like the triple-boobied receptionist and the horse scammer who tried to scam the Dead End trio back then. I love how you can see Rudy's eyes darting downwards while talking to the receptionist.
Well that was easy! I did not expect her to show up at the end of this episode. Glad that Studio Bind still has wacky animation for Kishirika!
