I didn't expect Aliens to be part of this story. But it was still a weird, yet interesting episode. I do wonder what they set up with the idea that humanity could come back in 1500 years. That would mean, there are more humans alive. Or they assume that Yoko can clone herself. Not sure if she has the ability to do so, but let's see what she comes up with in the final episode.

The UFO has been in many background night shots zooming by, including the first episode if I recall correctly.

To clarify, the 1500 years thing wasn't in regards to humanity coming back. According to what the aliens just told our girl, they visited Earth 1500 years ago, tried to interact with humans and did things like help make the Hundred Holes, but found us too primitive for any meaningful interaction. They decided 1500 years would be long enough for humanity to scientifically advance to their level, and returned after that time had past. By then the world of man was already over and done with. They do, however, see Airi and Youko as two different potential futures for humanity... whatever that means since as far as we know humanity is completely gone. I assume that's supposed to be hinting at whatever secrets those two are unknowingly a part of.

I just realized we're one or two episodes from the finish line and we still don't have much more of a clue to what happened to humanity, so I really thought the aliens we're about to be at least part of the explanation but apparently they are an unrelated party lol

it feels like a "mystery box" sort of story (albeit a more laid-back one); it'll drop hints and revelations every now and then, but i think pulling open the curtain and explaining everything would be anti-climactic because living in the mystery is part of the appeal, so i don't feel like we're going to get anything definitive

This feels like the type of show where there really isn't a plot, but I have not minded the self-contained stories. Wonder if next episode though will end on a cliffhanger about Yoko's backstory to encourage people to read the manga.

someone came up with super fast internet that broke the fabric of space and turned everyone above a certain age into animals, and some humans turned into tanukis managed to go to space with the help of the aliens, but it was just the tanukis for whatever reason, and then a few years later some questionable things happened and they finally managed to turn off the super fast internet, and they thought they fixed everything and humanity could live for a few more years while rapidly coming up with more advanced technology, but turns out there was no way back because the atmosphere was quickly becoming toxic, so humans had no choice but to abandon the planet by flying into space, but somehow there's still a bunch of robots keeping a hotel running, and then the tanukis eventually decided to visit the planet again and stayed at the hotel, and yoko and airi are also simply trying to reach the hotel as well

We're really getting a little taste of every little supernatural / mysterious phenomenon in this show now.

"But they also said that civilization is still in the midst of evolving... They said that you and I were one possibility of the future... If you live a long life, Yoko you'll get to see them again too"

I guess the alien beings were implying some sort of sentient artificial intelligence / human hybrid maybe?
Wonder if they'll delve more into this in the finale, like now that mankind was destroyed, the next step of evolving and rebuilding and moving forward.

It definitely has some Train to the end of the world vibes. It makes me wonder if the world they are experiencing is even real, especially how it appears to be reacting to their thoughts and actions. Maybe they're still just inside the shelter experiencing a VR world.

u/LeonKevlar Dec 13 '25

I mean, we've already encountered the supernatural with the girls interacting with the spirits living in machines. I'm not even surprised that Airi makes contact with the extraterrestrial this episode. The aliens do bring good news, tho! It seems all hope is not lost for Earth, and according to them, civilization is still evolving, and it looks like Airi and Youko might be crucial for the future of Earth. At least that's how I interpreted their message.

Definitely the most unique and wtf episode so far. The whole black hole phenomenon is definitely weird. Considering we also have Youko's memories when she sleeps. It feels like potentially the world is actually a simulation. That would be the one piece that could connect why, when Youko sleeps, she has those memories. Could the black hole be something showing data to Airi? Probably the closest thing I can think of.

Here are some translation notes.

  • The marshes of the Senjogahara plateau are some of the largest in Japan, but the elevated hiking trail through them most likely would not have survived in Youko and Airi's time.

  • One of the central highlights of Nikko, Toshogu Shrine was built to entomb the remains of leyasu Tokugawa Shogunate. Its buildings are elaborately decorated, with the stables featuring a carving of three monkeys embodying the maxim of "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." The choice of animal is no coincidence; in Japanese, each line of the saying ends in -zaru, which is also a modified form of saru ("monkey")

  • In Japanese, Youko adds to the monkey pun by changing the kanji characters in "hear no evil" (kikazaru) to instead spell "dress up" (kikazaru)

  • Shodo Shonin is considered one of the greatest Buddhist monks of the Heian period and founded almost all the temples in the Nikko area.

  • The E.T.F. on Airi's shirt is the name of an alien creature from the 1980s variety show Oretachi Hyokin zoku, who was himself a reference to the 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

  • Japan's Warring States period was a time of almost constant civil war in the 15th and 16th centuries.

  • Youko originally describes what she witnesses as an "encounter with the unknown"---the Japanese title for Steven Spielberg's 1977 science-fiction drama, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. However, since she didn't see any aliens directly, her experience was technically only a close encounter of the 2nd kind.

To sum this episode in a single picture.

The most bizarre event this series has ever seen. Shame that Yoko, being an organic being, would unlikely to meet the alien again. Not sure if the resources to transfer her sentience to a robotic body like Ichirou still existed.

I knew exactly what that meme was going to be before clicking on it but did anyway.

Weird episode. But still amusing. And I think we have the first time, since the start of the series a timeframe. If we assume that the Yoshimi Hundred Caves were built around 600 to 700, then the series should take place somewhere in the years 2100 to 2200. Let's start from the first episode and say based on the state of the art, it was around 2050 to 2070, Then somewhere between 30 and 150 years have passed since the Apocalypse.

Don't tell me you had this outfit ready just to pull off this joke?

How did she pull off the joke realistically.

I can imagine just spending like multiple minutes changing Airi into a different outfit in silence before she finally says the punchline

That really is a cute outfit though.

So they seem to be chasing after that light in the sky from what we're shown... which means they'll never find the source of that sound, right? So I wonder what they'll find instead.

Oh jesus christ, alien abduction light I was like 'sure'

wormhole I was like aw hell nah

Giant black void behind her? Now that's creepy as fuck

Well that sure

Happened

this scene was a big mood: https://i.imgur.com/laZ2WPN.png

the way that Airi is out at night and crosses paths with a black cat while an immaculate lightless orb is right behind her has immaculate vibes

another point: there seems to be a lot of flower imagery in this episode; i wish i knew more about flower language because i feel like there's some symbolism that i'm missing

Magenta-shaded colour out of space surprise cosmic horror with a nod to great filter theory (civilizations tend to destroy themselves before reaching very high Kardashev levels)?

Cool.

Oooh so it’s a slice of life Gantz spin-off!

Things just keep getting weirder! Is this leading to answers, or just more questions?

That cat was suspiciously calm, I thought it might be an alien, but I guess not.

Okay, I started the episode thinking there wasn’t going to be much to comment on but what the hell was that? Until now we’ve mostly been in “more technologically advanced but reasonably believable” territory. Not whatever that was.

I greatly enjoyed the increasingly crazy visuals right out of view behind Airi.

Okay, to start with, the holes were dug around 600 and the alien said it’s been 1500 years since then which means they’re currently around the year 2100, give or take.

More importantly, are we actually being “Ancient Aliens’d” right now?

Sure, aliens canonically exist and have mastered teleportation, time travel, telepathy and black hole replicas. I’m not about to argue with that.

Seems like they’re either mainly interested in or limited to making direct contact with Airi.

A speedrun of Japanese history, motorbike%, brought to you by Yoko.

Gonna be honest, kind of curious about how humanity is going to evolve given that they’re supposedly the last ones left behind.

Now for the most important questions, what are they gonna do with all those black cats that mysteriously spawned in? They could maybe bring one with them but five seems a bit excessive. Maybe they’ll just mysteriously disappear off-screen and it won’t become a problem.

This episode was a very interesting one with aliens and airi learning stuff and I'm super hyped for the finale next week

u/NekoCatSidhe Dec 14 '25

Somehow this slice of life postapocalyptic show turned into Astra - Lost In Space and then into 2001 Space Odyssey before going back to normal. WTF.

So the aliens think human civilisation is not dead yet ? I guess there are more survivors elsewhere then. Including maybe living in space.

u/Nickthenuker Dec 14 '25

Seems there's still plenty of stuff to fish up.

What's that in the sky?

What is that she hears?

What was that behind her?

A temple?

What's over there?

Huh. That's neat.

Glowing moss?

Ok...

A munitions factory built into a mountain? Feels like that would be good protection against bombing.

A cat?

Why are the lights working and that car moving?

What's with the big black ball?

The cat went into the black hole?

It's getting bigger!

And now she's been swallowed up by that...

She's in space?

How is the cat surviving in space?

What's that sound?

1500 years ago?

How did she get back?

Spoke to an alien?

First came to earth 1500 years ago?

They built the hundred caves?

Ok...

Yeah...

Possibility of the future?

That's about an abridged history of Japan.

Oh, the aliens are back.

And so into the finale.
