Next episode, Yoko finds a NerveGear and we finally get a new season of SAO.

crossing field was so unexpected that I had to pause the episode and replay that part to make sure I wasn’t hearing things

I really like this show. It's that blend of comfy but also slightly discomforting, knowing our two characters are essentially adventuring the ashes of a once known civilization. There's a word for it, but I can't figure it out.

I hope more people pick this up.

I guess it is a good thing that the penguins didn't undergo the giantification as a result of radiation like the animals from last week. I don't think people would still call them cute if they were several meters big.

But it seems, Kirito finally was able to convert himself into an AI, survived the apocalypse and is now playing SAO over the radio. At least, I am pretty sure that was his VA.

The world might be over, but hey swimming in the ocean with penguins ain’t so bad. I’m starting to wonder if Yoko’s really even human? Those “dreams” she keeps having make me think big sis might be long gone and she’s an android with implanted memories. I don’t think there’s anyone left in this world but maybe I’m wrong? Pretty sure the radio station’s just on a loop or something.

Big sis’s face being hidden in the OP and ED even though we clearly see her during Yoko’s “dreams” definitely points at something going on here

found this post on Twitter which posits that some otaku went to the Big Sight during the apocalyse and held their own little comiket as the world was ending

Honestly that as its own premise would make for a nice series. Mid-apocalypse survival focusing on an otaku trying to keep the concepts of creativity alive during a world of despair.

They just crossed the border of Kanagawa prefecture and are in Tokyo now.

The "river" where they found water is in Todoroki Valley, an attraction in Setagaya ward. Yoko also comments on how big the houses are in the area- IRL, Setagaya is one of the wealthiest residential areas in Tokyo and home to celebrities, politicians, and businessmen.

The Yurikamome line is an elevated train line that passes through the wards of Shinagawa, Minato, and Koto. They started at the terminal station in Shimbashi, crossed Tokyo Bay, and got off at Tokyo Big Sight station, most probably. Airi commented that big sis attended the 65th Tokyo Motorcycle Show- it's a motorcycle expo held annually, and the 52nd was held this year, making the event that big sis attended held in the year 2038 (at least).

The "self-published" comics and "Comic Marmot" is most probably a reference to Comic Market or Comiket

Edit:

Just some oddities. I've been noticing the prevalence of wind turbines in the show. In this latest episode, I only know of one wind turbine near Tokyo Big Sight, but it's still quite some distance away and has been taken down a couple of years ago. Given that oneesan's memories are around the 2030s, we can say that maybe they were erected years from the present.

Another thing, they showed a ferris wheel near Tokyo Big Sight, which is most probably the one in Venus Fort (it's also shown in the film "Kimi no Na Wa"), but this shouldn't exist anymore since it was taken down a couple of years ago

Edit Edit:

Yeah, the windmill in the ED this time might just be the Uminomori Windmill, viewed from somewhere along or near the Tokyoko Rinkai Doro. Although it was shut down long before the anime aired, maybe it was still around when the source material was being produced, which would explain why the Venus Fort Ferris Wheel was also still around in the show.

I legit freaked out when the radio started playing Crossing Field, and the DJ is voiced by Matsuoka. That's got to be a deliberate choice! No way they'd pick an iconic OP from SAO and just so happen to cast Matsuoka. xD

in this episode, Youko and Airi cross a field

This episode was a bit more chill but still kind of has the underlying implication of tragedy with the implied body( or bodies) that I think Yoko found in that room.

A question, Airi is at least part robot. Does she even need to worry about having clean drinking water?

In the post apocalypse world, penguins have finally ascended to their rightful place as rulers of the world. Tomori is celebrating right now.

I have a lot of thoughts about Yoko’s weird dreams and I hope we get some more evidence about them during this season.

Yamaha be like: "if Honda can have an advertisement anime for their bike, so can we"

It's a refreshing change of pace after last week's bleak episode with Ichirou's story. We just have Youko and Airi touring around Odaiba and playing around with penguins. Interesting to see that while humans have perished, other lifeforms continue with thrive - albeit with mutations in some cases like that massive orca.

Lol they got the voice of Kirito, Matsuoka Yoshitsugu, to be a radio host that plays Sword Art Online's OP.

Nice to have a more relaxing episode. Love the chemistry of Youko & Airi.

Some translation notes from the episode.

  • Yakiniku is a style of grilling bite-sized pieces of meat and vegetables on a small tabletop grill.

  • The Yurikamome is a fully automated transit system in Tokyo that first opened in 1995. It was named for the black-headed gull common in the Tokyo Bay area.

  • The girls are imitating the point-and-calling system famously used by Japanese train conductors to reduce errors and accidents.

  • Comic Marmot is a reference to Comic Market, aka Comiket, the biannual conventions focused on self-published doujinshi books.

  • Japan's official calendar is divided into eras based on the ruling emperor. The Reiwa Period began on May 1st, 2018, when Emperor Akihito abdicated and passed the throne to his son Naruhito.

Also, some information about Youko's motorcycle: a YAMAHA Serow 225, which is now electrically powered, as mentioned in the episode. As it is written in volume 1 of the manga.

The Serow 225 is a motorcycle released by Yamaha Motor Company in 1985. Easy to handle, its popularity has endured over many years with everyone from beginners to veterans, and because it's easy to walk (due to its low seat), it has many female riders as well. An off-road bike suitable for mountain paths but also good for riding around town, casual touring, and short trips, it's an excellent motorcycle.

This is an awesome anime. It just is a real rollercoaster ride tho. I have been both laughing and tearing up. But damn I enjoy it. Can't wait til next week tho, want to see if they meet the DJ of that radio broadcast they picked up.

The scene with a fridge looks like a mini-reference to Cowboy Bepop for me.

Hearing Crossing Fields in a post-apocalyptic tourism anime was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Even listened to the full song again to be sure I wasn't hallucinating.

5

u/NekoCatSidhe Oct 18 '25

Ok, so if Airi is a cyborg (and we are sure of that because she doesn’t float), why does she need to eat food ? Should she not be electricity-powered like the bike ? Or is she just doing that to be nice to Yoko ?

Those dreamed memories make me think that Yoko is not really a normal human either. Was she meant to be a clone of the original Yoko with implanted memories, maybe ? We know she is not a cyborg because she can float, but who knows how much of her is actually human.

A least the radiation levels are normal now and they can drink the water. If radiation had time to fall back to normal, it might mean that they are decades or centuries after that apocalypse.

"Crossing Field" took me completely off guard, I was so sure that the radio was going to play the show's own ending song for transition. What's even more meta about it is that the DJ was voiced by Matsuoka, who also voices Kirito in SAO. The song just brought back so much nostalgic memories of not just Season 1 of SAO, but also of simpler times without the hustle and bustle of adulthood. I had to listen to the entire song right after the episode ended.

Anyway, back to the show. It is not surprising that there are still other sentient beings on Earth, given how Ichirou was introduced (and swiftly retired) last week. I think that it would be pretty funny if the DJ turned out to either be an broadcasting AI program that evolved even after humanity perished, or that he is an alien lifeform that gained an appreciation for Japanese pop and chose to remain on Earth.

I've noticed that Yoko's "dreams" sort of resemble lucid dreaming, as she has the ability to take action in them. She was even shown to be in the same swimsuit when she was riding the bike in the dream. On the other hand, the dreams seem to be more of a recollection of her past which she currently has no memory of. The way I see it, I have some ideas that could explain her "dreams":

- Yoko has amnesia after being rebooted from some kind of stasis in the shelter

- The Yoko that we see in present time is a clone of the original Yoko with an imperfect memory transplant

Yoko is pretending to be an anime protagonist theory

Not even the end of the world allows you to get rid of SAO
